“Sometimes it’s about who you play…”
@Brant_Berglund doesn’t think #RaiseUp needs too many changes to get over the hump.

This season, Carolina was clearly lacking upfront, you do not get the same feeling looking at their depth chart that other teams have : “oh that top9 is scary”, “even their 4th line can score”, “these guys loaded up at the deadline” …. for Carolina the #2 center was either a very very old Staal or Jesperi “about to be bought out” Kotkaniemi … and its not only the centers, nobody is afraid of a team with Hall, Martinook, Stankoven or Blake on the 2nd line.
It starts at the top. Jordan Staal is a weak captain and is only there because Carolina was trying to craft some sort of familial succession story from the far far faaaar superior Eric Staal
The problem is people lump all the CF’s together. This one was simply that they had 4 rookies and made key mistakes that Florida used to blow games open. Those tight games Florida couldn’t get shit done between the whistles but the ones that got blown open they did. It’s why Carolina avoided it with Washington. They had a lead or kept it tight so Washington trying to get dirty would not be an option because they needed to focus on trying to win the game instead.
Canes aren't built for playoffs. It's simple. They are fun offence, that's it. They have zero grit
The Hurricanes aren't big enough. The only 2 Florida Panthers forwards under 6 feet are Evan Rodrigues and Brad Marchand. Of the forwards on the Hurricanes top 6, only Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Andrei Svechnikov are over 6 feet tall.
They need Svechnikov to pop off, I honestly don’t think a Tage Thompson for Svechnikov deal is bad idea for either team.
The Canes problems are simple.
1) not enough scoring
2) not enough size
3) average goaltending
Everyone looks at the Canes like they underachieve.
Every playoff over the last 7 years look who’ve they’ve lost to and ask yourself should they have won that series?
2019 was a 7 seed lost to BOS in ECF
2020 lost to BOS
2021 lost to TB
2022 lost to NYR
2023 lost to FLA (Bob had a .980 save %) in ECF
2024 lost to NYR
2025 lost to FLA in a ECF
There isn’t a team where they have lost that they had the better G. Or better scoring. They massively overachieve every year but don’t get the credit.
In any of the playoff losses if they had a Vasilevskiy, Shesterkin, Bobrivsky, Rask, they wouldn’t have won at least one of those series let alone a Cup?
Nobody talks about their below average goaltending nearly enough. They have never had even what I would consider a solid, consistent goaltender. Many postseasons they have debates about who should start as well. No true #1. That's a big part of it and it doesn't get discussed enough about this team
They lost because the had 2 rookies in defense with less than 10 combined games between them. Simple as that. Forced Orlov who had been a 3rd liner the last 2 seasons into playing tough minutes and got shelled. All this negative press for one of the most successful franchises in the league the last 7 years is crazy.
Freddy Andersen cooked…Fin
Carolina needs to add a top 6 forward with some size and they for sure need to get tougher. Florida bullied them at every chance they could. When you have a couple guys who are tough it makes everyone on the team a couple inches taller. Marchand skated around like he was 6’4” just like he did when he had Chara and Lucic covering his a$$. Games a little different but size and grit matter! Two of the tougher teams are the last few standing.
Your whole premise is wrong. They don't stand out from the bunch.
I’d like to see another guy who can score in the big moment so we don’t have to rely on Aho to always be the hero, Carolina still has yet to have a 50 goal scorer since moving here
Its a team full of talented hard working 3rd liners who play a tight system. When they come up against a team that plays a tight sytem and has skill they cant hang
Laz with another take as dumb as he looks…. If they don’t have any dawg in them, they could not play the way they do all game, every game, all season….
I think the problem is you can’t give 110% all year and then be expected to raise your game in the playoffs… are they too small as z team, or maybe they just need more players to play like pricks, instead of Aho running away from Tkachuck… who was only bullying him because he was letting him…similar to Marner those are the type of players that he engages with… he’s not chirping Evander Kane until Kane is in the box
No big time scorers. I thought Rantanen was the answer, until he wasn't.
Because they are pretty mediocre & play in a terrible division. And with NHLs awful,& unfair playoff setup they get to put 3 ECF in 7 yrs or whatever-on their resume-while being like 7th-10th best team. Under a fair playoff setup-at least 2 of those times they lose 1st or 2nd round-maybe all 3. 1 vs 8 setup-they just lose 1st round to Florida in 5. It's not like they are losing these series in 6 or 7 hard fought games. I don't count 2009-that was so long ago.
But this year-I have very little doubt my AVS,Vegas,& Toronto are all superior to Carolina,& would've got just as far if they faced that path. And I suspect WPG,LA,& TB would've also. I don't even rule out the possibility Minnesota,& St Louis would. Montreal obviously lost to Washington who I said was too dependent on Ovi at his age,& got above his head goaltending that'd be exposed in playoffs. NJ if healthy was mediocre but with their injuries was honestly 1 of the worst playoff teams we've seen this decade at least. And I don't think Ottawa is as good or experienced as Carolina.
And doesn't at all excuse my Avs choking away 3rd period leads 3 times-including a ridiculous game 7-to a team missing 2 All stars or Toronto going out as meekly as they did their last 2 home games. Or LA collapsing again…or me being proven right on WPG that no chance they'd get out of 2nd round with below average Nemesticov at 2C. Those teams all had plenty of chances. WPG at deadline to improve that gaping hole,& other teams in the playoffs were in great positions. But more than 1 thing can be true at same time.
I'm still pissed off as hell at my AVS. But I have no doubt they would've made WCF run if it was 1 vs 8 format. We would've beat LA,& WPG…let alone if we faced Carolinas soft ass path. Toronto deserves plenty of blame again. And I think under any format-Florida,& Edmonton are very deserving & probably the 2 best teams. We'd probably have the same Finals matchup. But that doesn't excuse the worst playoff format in sports. Id feel much better had my Avs say lost in 6 or 7 to Edmonton in WCF run(or even 5). And I know Toronto fans would feel better if they'd ended their 22 or 23 yr ECF drought.
Toronto mgt basically said Shanahan would still have his job had theyd made ECF. I understand why they fired him-it was probably time. And I totally understand why we fired Ray Bennet -our idiot PP coach who couldn't figure out to put Nichuskin on PP1 for who knows what reason. Bennet probably still has his job if we come within 2 or 3 games of Cup Finals. And whoever wins the Cup I think is the best team.
But these things matter-whether you "make a deep run"-& get to conference final or underachieve again. They cost people jobs,& too some degree affect legacies. I mean Avs core players have a Cup in 2022,& Marner/Matheuws won't hear end of it til they win a Cup but their playoff resumes wouldn't be so laughably pathetic-if say they had 2 ECF trips in last few yrs. But I would like to thank Edmonton.
For all Dallas recent success-3 straight WCF,& like 5 in 7 or 8 yrs,+ 1 Cup Final-they still haven't won a title this CENTURY! They might own us-Deboer definitely is our daddy-beat us 4 times with 3 different teams. But no Cups for him either-despite 6 WCFs in 7 yrs-hell no Finals trips. I'm not sure which stat is more unbelievable cuz they both are. But thank you Oilers-does make me feel a little bit better despite our massive gag.
