Bryan Rust’s no-trade clause expires on July 1, so should the Penguins explore a trade? Hunter and Patrick start the show discussing a potential Bryan Rust trade and whether or not it’s worth it for the franchise. They talk about how, while he may be a fan and locker room favorite, a trade could bring them a windfall, but would that help the retooling? Then, they take a look at the small sample size from defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok and what they need to see from him next season. Finally, it was announced on Thursday that Sidney Crosby will be one of the subjects of season two of Faceoff: Inside The NHL.

i mean your doing rebuild you need trade vets like rackell and rust and karlsson when they have value and if your not doing a rebuild then you keep it
You guys must be reading my posts on HFBoards… Rust is a player that adds leadership to Buffalo. They should value that. And damn do we need a player like Byram.
Hextall added extra value to Rust & Rakell.
It's not a rebuild. Dubas isn't t tearing it down to the foundation. He's just remodeling. If you trade rust and or rakell then your pulling down the house. If we trade rust or rakell then we are in the McKenna lottery and you might as well trade Sid as well. We are 1 left d, 1 top six forward away from a playoff spot.
you forgot one thing rust no move is gone on july 1st so dubas could trade him to any 32 team he wants to you so have huge advantage
For me if rust didn't have such an injury history there's no way I would even think about trading him but I feel almost every season he's going to miss some time… That being said it would definitely have to be a trade that makes a lot of sense because he really plays the game the right way… You guys do a great job and I look forward to listening to everyday even in the offseason.. Thanks
Completely hypothetical and in no way would it happen;
If the leafs call and say, we’re going to sign and trade Marner to you and we want rust in return – do you do that?
Kolyachonok deserves a longer look the kid is fast this kid can move, he made mistakes, hes young speed isn't taught, look how long it took Grezyck to adapt and hes a veteran
My gut tells me that Bryan Rust will remain on the Penguins next season, but I only move him if you get a return you cant refuse and teams may overpay, because of the NHL salary cap increasing and Rust not having a huge cap hit.
I agree with both of you, don't just trade him to trade him, but it has to be value in the return. Let me say if Rust is on this team next season, which I think he will be, can we please get him an A on his jersey? He absolutely has earned the right to have a letter on his sweater.
I also think, Mitch Love is going to be the next coach of the Penguins. All signs point to him being the front runner and I think it's his job if he wants it.
i would be willing to only accept a single 1st round draft pick for Rust if they take Graves with him
You move Rakell and Karlsson this offseason for young player/players. Shorten the rebuild.
If it is not a big enough jumpstart, then move Rust next season.

Do not be shocked if Pieniniemi really impresses in this next training camp.
Tank for Gavin McKenna in the 2026 draft
Honestly I can't see Rust going anywhere, but I was saying the same thing about Mike Sullivan and Dubas did it, so who knows. Dubas has proven that he has the stones to shake up the locker room lol. If Dubas is sticking to getting younger in a hurry then trading Rust makes sense.
I'll say it every time…let Joseph walk, get rid of Hayes, Heinen, Graves, and Acciari. Use those roster spots to rotate the prospects into some NHL ice time.
I wouldn’t be against keeping Rust. He has a cheap contract and is a Swiss Army knife. He can play an offensive game and when the offense isn’t there, he is still competent and doing good things without the puck. But at the same time he is on the wrong side of 30 so if they can get a good return for him, I wouldn’t hate a trade either.
I was at the Pens-VGK game in Vegas and Kolyachonok was a straight dumpster fire. Only one game, but ooof.
Fans are too married to players like Rust and Rackell. They cannot invision the bigger picture. The likelihood that either player is here when they are a real contender is very low. I am not suggesting moving them for sake of moving them. But these guys have really good value and should without questions get, really good pieces that are what Dubas is looking for. Another thing to ponder, do you really think you are going to get 70 games out of Rust each year for the life of his current contract? I would take the under all day long. Wait to long, you miss your chance.
Wouldn't it be the best thing for Rust to be moved to an organization in a contention windows as opposed to being used as a theoretical canal with a few locks to dispel the mystique of Sid?
Hopefully, Bryan Rust stays a Penguin for the rest of his career. He's a 100% team guy that performs in every situation in which he's placed and a guy like that, particularly with his loyalty, is really hard to replace.
Rusty is an OG Penguin and actual home-grown top-line player. Future captain when the core retires… They better not trade him, i will be livid…
