Tage Thompson scored an overtime game-winning goal to clinch the first gold medal for the U.S. Men’s National Team at the IIHF Men’s World Championship since 1933, defeating Switzerland, 1-0, here today at Avicii Arena.

    Finally after 92 years the gold medal has come home: TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and most definitely Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau are smiling down on TEAM USA

    Was in the arena. My first World Cup hockey event. As a Stockholmian I am so glad it was this game, the final. How did it take 92 years? This US team is just dynamite! They the upper hand throughout the match. And the game before that, sending Sweden (my country) out like nothing. That was painful to watch…Team USA champions!!! Well deserved!

    Did Gaudreau have a special relationship with the world championship tournament? There's photo-op with his jersey and the trophy, and people are referring to him in comments. Is this just reminiscing a player who has passed, or did he have some special role in elevating USA in the tournament?

    The last time the us won gold in this they literally sent the best team in America at the time the Massachusetts rangers bunch of amateur and college players. And now 92 years later those players from the 1933 team can rest a little easier now. Well done boys this was for Johnny hockey who no doubt would’ve been on this team if he was still with us

    This is the third gold medal for the United States at the World Championship. The gold medal from the 1960 Olympics is also considered a World Championship victory, as the World Championship was not held in an Olympic year.
