  1. one of my favourites all time. i wish the oilers put him in the lineup for a playoff game last year. maybe despite not being one of their top 12 forwards at that point, his pure vibes and love of the game puts them over the top for the cup win

  2. As an Oilers fan, i hated this player. No high end offensive talent, terrible defensive abilities. He played better on the wings than as a center. His best year was in Columbus when he was coached under Torts

  3. You missed that he technically won the EBEL Championship during the lockout. Allthough he wasn't there anymore in the finals.

  4. Only two players started straight to NHL from draft in 07: Patrick Kane and Sam Gagner. So the Oilers definitely rushed him but since no one wants to sign with the Oilers at the time due to poor managements and other factors that they have to run "kid line" with Gagner, Nilsson, and Cogliano. Gagner has most of his career experience "decade of darkness" with all of the Oilers mess.

  5. I’m not gonna lie I had no idea he was still playing up until last year. That’s a real nice long career.

  6. really liked him as a jacket he fit in really well on the team and wished they had brought him back afterwards

  7. As an Oilers fan, one of the biggest tragedies from the Decade of Darkness was the way it probably tanked Gagner's career. If he'd been on a better team, he probably ends up at an 80 to 90 point pace

  8. Not a great career, but he made it to 1000 games. If a guy can't play, coaches won't play him. The fact that he could be put in a lineup for that many games meant he had some skills.

  9. Off-topic but Jesper Fast (6th RD pick vs. 6th overall like Gagner) has retired.

    91 goals and all but four at even-strength. 2 PPG’s, and in 2019-20 he had 2 SHG’s. That’s an unusual stat-line for a forward.

As far as Gagner’s career: played over 1-K games and never scored more than 50 pts (just once, w/ Columbus) and I’d love to know how he stayed around.

Wasn’t physical, below-average in face-offs, never had more than 18 goals, career minus-139. He must’ve been a joy to be around, considering his constant 3rd Line plugger-production.

  10. Sam's grandmother has a farm just outside of town here and I met his father Dave at the bank when I was a kid. I was pulling for him as kind of a local product. He had a very nice career and was happy for the years that he played with the Wings! Enjoy your retirement!

  11. As a Blue Jackets fan I also want to mention that Gagner played a significant part in the 16-game winning streak we had that year
