A coach can indeed make a big difference as an evaluator/systems guru who promotes a real team ethos. This upcoming year is not one to worry about Stanley Cup contention, because it is a transition year where the emphasis will be on disciplined play and development of the rooks. The vets like Mika, Kreider & Trochek will return to form. Rangers are not going to clean house. Trading K'iller, Brodzinski, Parsinnen & Jones for a good return that involves a defenseman is a must, as is signing one of the Russian 3 in FA. The future third line center will play in Hartford next year, & don't sleep on Noah Laba, he's better than most think. Fans tend to overreact with negativity & a sky is falling mantra. It's not. Patience will be required & Sullivan will help Drury make better decisions because Laviolette did not. Most won't agree, but I think Laviolette was 75% of the problem.
I feel it will take three years before you see some sort of top contender in their conference.
1) Name a Captain – and don't pull the rug out from under him. Again.
2) Get some Assistant Coaches with drive – and influence
3) Give young players like Robertson, Berard, Perreault a real chance
4) Trade away the soft players who don't give 100% – get a solid D back.
5) Consequences for not performing.
And then we are 2 trades away from a playoff return.
This team shouldn’t be that far behind contending. Remember a year ago the went to conference finals. Drury never addressed the needs after last season.
Nobody is gonna have a chance to beat Florida due to the system and the players they have playing that system. The only chance another team has is if the Panthers get bored with winning.
Florida morphing into this juggernaut is the Ranger's worst nightmare. Proof positive that championship teams are built from the ground up and shortcuts don't work. Rangers are a professional shortcut team. They don't look themselves in the mirror and answer the hard questions like why can't we develop players that help at the NHL level. Why does this team remain committed to selecting undersized and SLOW forwards who never make an impact?? Rangers are basically the Islanders right now, no captain no sense of direction and definitely NO MOXY. It's not like Drury has a ton of cap to work with either, he painted himself into a corner. Very hard to sit back and watch the level of compete taking place in these playoffs and imagining the rangers upping their game to that level. We are officially back in the dark ages
They do need to add a top four defenseman like Gavrikov and a third line center, Bennett would be ideal but his salary is kinda high for a third line center around 7 to 8 million so someone like in McCann's salary range would be better for the cap. I think they need to add a top 6 winger as well like Boeser who would fit well on a line with JT Miller. He has size, a good shot plays with some passion and is good in the playoffs. I think it would be best if the Rangers if the Rangers can move on from Kreider, Zibanejad and K'Andre Miller to open up the cap and possibly Soucy and add a more consistent player in his place. There has been talk about Bowen Byram possibly being available, that would be great if they could get him. Soucy could rebound this year if the Rangers can make some solid moves to upgrade this team, he joined a team that as a whole didn't fully as a whole have their hearts in it and a proper defensive plan in place protecting the front of the net and keeping, having a good forecheck in place and a good power play which all needs to be addressed and with Mike Sullivan as coach I believe they will improve on all these areas but I would upgrade on Soucy if you have the opportunity too
