Talking about teams like Anaheim not being likely:
IF they can land a relatively strong free agent before Marner, they may start looking like a realistic destination.

This is crazy talk. The Leafs are losing a 100-point player that they can't replace. The team didn't do so badly, losing to one of the finalists. The mistake is spending so much on the core players. The real reason Marler is leaving is probably taxes.
Yes there is a hockey tree out there , it's called the draft, but leafs have never ascribed to it. If they did , there would be lots of replacements and they would not be all 35 years old.

You can't keep part of the problems . Change is needed and may have to get rid of more the following year. No trade clauses really hurt a team in the long run

Who in the Leafs organization has come out and say. WE DO NOT want Marner back. Yet you say No one in the organization wants him back nor does he want to be back. Losing him to nothing is not an option. Resigning him IF he does not want to be a Leafs legend and all time scorer is not an option. BUT. A sign and Trade is SURE on the table. THAT is the only way Marner avoids being the most hated leaf IF he leaves and that is the only way the leafs get a return on a HIGHLY skilled pick that has what? almost 4 100 point seasons? Name me one other 100 point player that won't be making 13 million already or will be next contract? Sign and build or Sign and Trade. Marner knows his heart is in TO but if his game is not in TO then least don't make the fans pay for it by walking for nothing. Leafs should Keep Marner and Tavares and sign Marchand. Leafs need a leader. Leafs had Kadri and Hyman but MLSE wanted the "marque players" to increase their profits. Low scoring games are not profitable.
