I had not been that pissed off since the LA series. They definitely deserved to lose for behaving like that this far into the playoffs.

I know the guys are beating themselves up over this loss, and I think we all expect a rebound. If the Oilers can do one thing well, that thing is adaptation. Somehow, I think these brutal loses add to the Oilers magic. Whether they can actually pull it off remains to be seen, but, I’m not too worried, and I think it’s more an issue of cleaning up than it is being blown wide open by a way better team.

All I have to say is this: What the hell happened? I truly hope that this was just a one time thing and not a sign of things to come. There are six more games in the series. And hopefully, the Oilers won’t need all of them. They’re just gonna have to dust themselves often try again on Friday. Anyway, I’m glad I found your channel Austin. As a Dallas Stars fan I can tell you there has not been a single game this postseason in which the Stars have won the 5 on 5 battle. Not one. There’s maybe four periods overall I can recall where they’ve dominated play and a couple of games where they’ve at best been even with the other team. And yet they keep winning. The Stars don’t have to out hit, out shoot, out skate you. They beat you with structure and skill and seem to have an ability to turn it on when absolutely necessary. The Avs and Jets combined went 6 for 45 on the PP. While the Stars PP after tonight is at 35 percent. If the Oilers want to win this series they have to win the special teams battle or at least neutralize it. However, the Stars depth showed signs of waking up the last couple of games…

I'm a Dallas fan and was expecting officiating to be the first thing you griped about. Thankfully you're not one of those blinders on fans that can't discern when a call is legit or not. Series is far from over and without those lazy penalties the oilers took in the last portion of that game its probably a much different final score. Thanks for restoring my faith in Edmonton fans with your analysis on the game. Best of luck rest of the series. Ohhh and Go Stars!
Shows how quickly it can turn with a team like Dallas. If EDM takes dumb penalties and is undiscipline Dallas will them pay. EDM lack of attention to detail late in the 2nd gave a gimme game. Can't afford to give games to a contender like Dallas. Lack of discipline this series is done in 5. If ice age Skinner comes back this could be done in 4. Shows Dallas just needs some pp and 20 mins and they can beat EDM. That EDM should take notice and not take Dallas lightly . They will make u pay even if you dominated most of the game.

Oilers losers like the leafs
Penalty minutes were Edmonton with 14 to Dallas with 12, so for the most part the game was pretty even on that. Skins wasn't to blame for those goals except for the 4th goal where he was laying in the crease. Obviously, special teams were the difference in game 1.

I feel for Drai especially, he was the Oilers best player, he was just unreal! Making plays, he had the nicest goal of the game imo, the 1st goal. Man, I don't how that happened in the 3rd, I didn't realize just how good the Stars pp is. The Stars only got going in the 3rd period and they REALLY got going. Get em next game.
the real issue is Coach is not creating accountability.. he is a buddy of the players which is a good strategy to get buy in… but it also means they just do what they want… and it shows. tons of checks that Oilers just stopped, gentle bump, and quite on… (look at Janmark moving to not block the puck… not have pain – but block Skinner( (at Drais quit and not push Sequin letting him score the 5th goal)…. etc vs FL coach saying they want to make the other team fully exhaused by game7. big difference in effort / accountability etc

As you said, the Oilers are a team that usually benefit from a game or two of "data," and they always start COLD after a break. They'll heat up.
Great analysis as always Austin. I expect the Oilers to be a little more buttoned up in game 2. That 3rd period made me sick to my stomach but it’s only game 1. Would’ve been nice to steal one on the road though.

As I said before, the Oilers need to play 100% for the whole game. You can not let the other team breathe. They let them breathe and lost with an embarrassing result. That must not happen again!

Bold prediction, whomever wins game 2 will win this series. Game 1 is kind of a mulligan with the break, and the figuring out process.
The Oilers gotta stop gifting their opponents the solutions to the problems they have. Duchene, Seguin, and others now are off the schnide.
Oilers still have goalie problems. I keep saying this. The bandwagon jumpers are hard on me when I say that after a win. But the fact remains. No stanley cup team ever had goalie problem. And skinner was not good.

I think people that are using the small sample size of the Stars performance in the playoffs this year are really missing a key element. The Stars opposition in rounds 1&2 were both Stanley Cup contenders. They didn't dominate against them, but they found ways to win.
Teams, and let's just be honest here, like the Oilers that did not have as tough competition in rounds 1&2 should have better stats coming into round 3.
You have to use a larger sample size when looking at data like that. But even that becomes difficult with Dallas, because they haven't had their full roster since December-January after Seguin and Heiskanen went out with injuries. But they still found ways to win.
Then they added Cici, Granlund, and Rantanen.
They are more potent now, and there's not really good pre-scouting on them before really the last 3 games.
Funny enough, I thought the one goal Stu had the best chance of saving was the Seguin breakaway. Once a goalie is screened, as a goalie, the best you can do is take up as much net as possible and HOPE it hits you.
When you gift the favorites in a series a win like that it’s not good. As a Stars fan I hope we get our payback from last year. #Stars
Definitely a big difference from last year when Dallas went 0/14 on powerplays. Lots of reasons to be optimistic for both fanbases. There is plenty of hockey left to play. Go Stars!

I’m a Stars fan and started following last year, really enjoy your breakdowns both ways. You’re absolutely right about the first 40 minutes, literally sent my dad a text, we text through all the Stars games, that if that was the best Dallas could do the Oilers were going to win in 4. I said before the series this was going 7 and I still believe that.
