On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, Joey Erickson reacts to the Stars losing in the Western Conference Final for the 3rd straight season. A horrific start led to the Stars trailing 3-0 in the first 8 minutes of the game and it was too big of a whole to climb despite a two goal performance from Jason Robertson. Joey shares his thoughts on Pete DeBoer’s decision to pull Jake Oettinger after giving up two goals on the first two shots to put Casey DeSmith in net. In the next segment, Joey highlights where things went wrong for Dallas in the series and once again why they were unable to get over the hump. To finish, we look ahead at some of the decisions in the offseason including Pete DeBoer, Jamie Benn and other futures that are uncertain.

A point I forgot to make on DeBoer: although I may disagree he should be fired, Jim Nill has to at least entertain the option and see whats out there.
P.S. I hate DeBoer's comment after the game on Oettinger more and more
In regards to what is wrong with your team it is clear that team speed and extreme grit are an issue. The problem with the latter part of what I mentioned is that in today's NHL these types of players are harder to find. The league is soft. The coaches and even GMs don't have the power always to do what they need to do in order to put a better team out there on the ice that can win "playoff" games. The players have too much say and have quite honestly helped ruin the game.
You are 100% right in saying someone at some point needed to make life uncomfortable for McDavid and others on that Oilers team. That doesn't mean you have to be dirty but you can ring someone's bell by looking for a hit or forcing a fight in a game that has gotten out of hand. Also in a game that you clearly are going to lose you still finish your checks and hit everything that moves to wear an opponent down over a series. This seems to be lost on today's NHL coaches and players and you sure as hell don't hear them talk about wearing down an opponent by doing this over a series.
DeBour lost his cool and the collateral damage was Jake Oettinger. The way he was removed was pretty despicable.
thank you very much for covering the playoffs, your opinion is a bit of a refreshment compared to, let's say, other Dallas-related channels where, after losing the game, the feedback is more or less "well, it could go both ways".
I think that sugar coating of our shitty dump and chase offense and overall performance is a huge problem. This team has huge issues after Mikko's trade, who is a phenomenal player, but I think, to a certain degree, it matches a bit weird with the rest of our offense right now. IMO we have too many similar players in offense, and we're missing true dogs like Stankoven, who are great skaters and can easily get us to our opponent's third. And Robo's comeback to the lineup disrupted this chemistry even more. We are slow, incapable of creating chances from breakaways and we can only win while playing pretty ugly series.
We played against a fantastic team of Colorado, who I was shocked we won with but we did this mostly because of Mikko and Otter. And the same Otter, who was the main reason why you even got to this point in playoffs, is throwed under the bus by his own coach; this sucks a lot. We played fucking terrible series with Winnipeg as well and 4-2 result is just absolutely mad, based on what we actually were able to create with our offense.
This offense core deserves better. Our first 3 lines are absolutely stacked with elite players, however, for whatever reason, it just doesn't work well, and being in the Conference Finals is, to be honest, not something we deserved too much. There was a lot of fighting, scrambling, ugly plays against Colorado and Winnipeg, with a fantastic Otter display. But we are outshot in almost every game after Mikko's trade and it just sucks to watch. The series with Edmonton, on paper, should be 7 games of a true war, but based on what we played, we should have been even swept by them.
Greetings from Poland, and thanks to the team for this ride, even though it was so fucking frustrating to watch them with Edmonton.
5 on 5 Dallas just couldn't generate
Jamie Benn probably needs to think hard about when will it be his last season. In 18 playoff games he had 3 points. I love Jamie Benn but even I gotta admit that is pretty pathetic. I don’t know if he will re-sign with Dallas but if there was ever a time where they had the best chance to make it to the finals and win it all, it was this time. Matt Duchene, love ya during regular season but 6 points in 18 games with a -16 just kinda shows your line was trash both ways. Younger guys are only going to keep getting better, but the veteran guys need to contribute on and off ice.
Edmonton got all the crucial breaks and lucky goals this round. Just let you know it wasn't Stars time yet.
DeBoer pulling Oettinger after only TWO goals was pretty shocking. Very Mike Keenan-esque from way back when he coached the Blackhawks.
As an oilers fan I don't blame otter for those first 2 goals. I still think otter is still a great goalie. It was a great series
Dallas you guys are an amazing team. Yes you lost to the Oilers x2 However tell that to the LA Kings. They lost x4. Dallas you made the Conference finals x3. That alone is amazing. Keep knocking and you will get in.
My only question is if you fire DeBoer, who would you replace him with? I prefer someone with experience and success! I also like defensive minded coaches! We'll wait and see
As an oilers fan, I was impressed by the Dallas crowd this game. Many stayed to watch the oilers receive the Clarence Campbell and they cheered the Stars on in the last few seconds despite losing. When the oilers no longer become a contender, I would be happy to see dallas fans get the cup.
Dumba signing was a massive head scratcher from day 1, he needs to be bought out. 3.75m for a press box bum.
Benn also gotta take a huge, huuuuge discount
Firing Petey has to be part of the conversation after that first period disaster. He completely lost his mind when he pulled Oetter when it was his own systems that got them down 2-0 on two shots. It was massively embarrassing for Oetter; Petey basically threw the game away with how badly he bungled his preparations for today.
Pete needed to change something after game 2, 3, and 4. Lets be clear, he pulled Otter because he had no answers. Pete has to go. I like the guy, but your team will never get over the hump if you check out when the lights get brightest. His post game comments also tell me he has lost the locker room, especially Otter. Jim should read the writing on the wall.
Sorry bro. Sucks to see yer team go out! Oilers fan but both years I’ve watched and neither time at any point were you anything but always classy in your analysis. Deboar did no favours for your team with his action nor statements.
Agree with most of your comments. This is NOT on Jake Ottinger, tough to think about him being thrown under the bus. It's not on DeBoer either…. This is on the GM. They needed to add a couple speedy puck moving D, rather than a couple of stay at home bottom pairing guys that turned out to be dead wood. Jamie Benn and Duschene are not the future in Dallas. if changes are gonna come it's Dallas GM who should get the axe.
One more thing, Skinner did NOT outplay Otter. Stop using that narrative. Skinner didnt have to do anything, Otter was fantastic for most of this series, outside of a couple of goals. He mostly held Edmonton in check and made these games winnable for the Stars.
Jim Nil went and got a dominant post season goal machine and Pete couldnt use him in the biggest moment. Jim made the moves to get us there, period.
The continuing failure of Dallas still remains with some of the key issues over the past three season. 1) They rely too much on fast break scoring during the regular season. Those goals are hard to come by in the playoffs when team defense works to check and clog the neutral zone. 2) The lack of physicality. Not just hitting, but the lack of physical play to keep themselves on the puck or fighting to get back the puck. Playoff hockey is not a time for finesse. It requires a lot of will and want. 3) Not playing a full 60 hockey game. DeBoer can say that from one press conference to another, but when the team continues to not play a full game, then who should this fall on? DeBoer. He is the reason this team does not play full games. That simple.
