I think thier points are valid, but I also don’t know who we could have traded who also had value. If we could find a way to get better value out of trading a lot of our D away, we would be in much better shape. I’m curious as to if we are gonna see Cossa next season
SY said he wouldn’t sacrifice trade capital for a player that wasn’t going to stay long enough to be there when the team can actually be competitive in the playoffs.
Also, why would they trade a top goalie prospects when both haven’t developed enough to know if they’re NHL caliber? They’d be shooting themselves in the foot if the one they traded becomes a starter and the other one never makes it.
I don’t get why everyone is so upset about this season when they wouldn’t have gone out of the 2nd round regardless. Hopefully this year humbled them enough to give them a chip on their shoulders next season
I'm all for giving Stevie as much time as he needs, but I also want to see the boys playing meaningful hockey in late April, not giving exit interviews and booking tee times at their favorite golf courses. I think, after being eliminated for nine sjeasons in a row now (six under Stevie, and only really two can arguably be put on Stevie's shoulders for a lack of good signings/trades), the leadership group is wearing thin when it comes to progress with the rebuild.
He made the right choice at the deadline, trading kasper or a goalie prospect for a gross deadline market (it was pretty mid no lie) would have been dumb in my opinion either way other teams loading up on mid and also, circumventing the the cap w LTIR players coming back for the playoffs. We could not compete with that. Sorry if this take hurts your feelings guys, but I’d rather keep our guys than lose in round one, yell Ottawa and Montreal will probably miss the playoff next year too so saying they’re further in the rebuild is only a position being pointed at because they made the playoffs.
Look at the teams in the current playoffs that are legitimate contenders for the cup, they have what Wings lack… speed, size and physicality. Wings are miles away from a true run at Lord Stanley.
Whether Yzerman is indirectly called out or not, he built this ongoing NON-playoff caliber team. It undoubtedly falls on his shoulders at the end of the day regardless of your argument.
Let's see
One team captain's team was outside the playoff bubble and had been the league's worst a couple seasons ago. That captain went to the GM and implored him not to sell because he had belief his team could make the playoffs. The GM agreed. That Captain put his team on his back and helped drive them to the playoffs
Another captain about the same disappeared for a long stretch, going scoreless for nine games and they missed the playoffs after another March flop. Then he sits like a pouting child in a presser and complains he and the team he's supposedly the leader of was demoralized and it was a major cause they didn't make the post season.
There's the difference right there why Detroit done and Montreal is in
Look at our draft picks over the last 10 years how many of Holland's picks are on the team (2)? And how many of Steve's are not onky playing but are playing significant roles!
Holland draft choices screwed this team up the last 10 years Stevie Y started with Larkin only nothing in the AHL no picks.. 0.
We are 5 years away from being a decent competitive hockey team.
Dylan Larkin has been through a lot with the wings but we can't continue to treat him as if he is some franchise cornerstone. I know he was born in MI and played at U of M but his ceiling is a 2C on a great team. I'm surprised he is still the captain. He doesn't inspire and he seems like he hasn't wanted to be here the last few years. I don't even need to get started on his mediocre stats. He has basically stagnated. He has really gotten better. You can blame his team all you want but he is playing on the first line with other very talented players and his overall numbers still say the same every year. Meanwhile, Raymond is shattering his. Tbh, Kasper could be better than Larkin right now and should be 1C next year.
Ive said this before and I'll say it again: Yzerman is banking WAYYYY too hard on his prospects panning out. Contending teams are built through the draft, good signings, and good trades, he's been mid to bad in FA, and iffy in trades, but phenomenal in the draft. He needs to step it up.
The most upset I've been with Yzerman as a Red Wings fan, is seeing a report that he didn't even put out offers for Markstrom OR Ulmark last summer.
Kasper is who everybody wanted and he’s better then who was available
Yzerman was all in on stamkos then at the last minute he went to Nashville …. Huge reason for the deadline day shortcoming
Yzerman should finally rid himself of everything Holland had his fingers on. Including Ras, Berggren and Larkin. Captain should lead by example and not cry about team losing motivation…its his job to motivate. Also, when Tkachuk jumped on raymond and held him to the ice by his throat, Larkin did nothing to stop it.
Larkin should lead by example instead of run his mouth! He is no Captain. Got the big payday and disappeared! Trade him.Players are paid to perform! Kane he took his own hiatus this season! They need to shut up and work!
I can't think of anyone that would have helped immediately. And the same goes for the off-season. We have guys coming up next season, maybe we can dump Vlad, Copp, and Holl off for something useful, but I think the best we can hope for is that Steve signs Kane, and maybe Cossa is ready to come up.
Larkin can shut the hell up and frickin play hockey, he seems to stop around February, guess he just wants to golf
Why cant you all admit illitch is the real problem and not yzerman.hes forcing Steve to be cheap and not win cups
The mistake the Wings made before Yzerman took over was every year trading away youth for veterans near the end of their career just to make the playoffs. The team just got worse and worse for years while completely emptying the cupboard. Simply making the playoffs is short term goal and why would you give up what appear to be some good prospects just to make the playoffs and lose in the first round. That would be stupid. Steve may be a lot of things, but stupid isn't one of them. The Wings are still a few years away from going all in at the trade deadline of in free agency. What would be the purpose? Personally I don't care if they just make the playoffs and then lose in round one. That achieves nothing toward a long run in the playoffs. Larking needs to take a look in the mirros at himself and play better when they need wins the most. Cane is basically done so what he says doesn't mean much. Steve has been in the position 5 years, not very long in the history of the franchise. If they don't look good and make the playoffs after 2 or 3 more years and make it to the second round then Yzerman may have to go, but not yet ….
Wasn’t it the same roster that went on two different seven game-winning streaks. Maybe Larkin should look within him
Larkin was so hot and cold it made him hard to count on. I've honestly wanted Detroit to move on from Larkin for the last two years.
He blames Yzerman for doing too little but he did far too little when it mattered the most.
Trade Larkin while you can still get something for him
