  1. According to NHL Rule 61, which governs slashing, a major penalty must be assessed when an injury occurs due to a slash:

    Rule 61:
“A major penalty, at the discretion of the referee based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player who slashes an opponent. When injury occurs, a major penalty must be assessed under this rule.”

Given that Hintz was visibly injured—unable to put weight on his left leg and requiring assistance off the ice—the rule suggests that a major penalty was warranted.

Based on the NHL’s own rules and the circumstances of the incident, the slash by Darnell Nurse on Roope Hintz should have resulted in a major penalty. The decision to downgrade it to a minor penalty appears inconsistent with Rule 61, which mandates a major penalty when an injury occurs due to slashing.
