The commissioner was recently quoted about Atlanta possibly getting a third chance to have an NHL team, and we know Houston has been speculated as a front-runner market. The commissioner was also clear that there wasn’t anything new, as far as a formal expansion process. But it sure feels like the league is inching closer to reopening an expansion process. Do you agree with that?
No, I don’t, only because I might quibble with what an expansion process is defined as. I think what the commissioner has said, and I’ll echo, is that if the right opportunity for expansion came along and all the boxes were checked, we would bring that to the Board (of Governors) on some basis. We’d bring it obviously to our Executive Committee first, and then, if appropriate, the (full) Board, and kind of take their temperature on whether it’s something they want to pursue.
I think what Gary is clear about is, there is no current intention to open up a formal expansion process and invite bids. It’s much more of a one-on-one conversation and relationship we have with various potential owners.

Brodie, I'm taking my cues from your Tampa interviews: "Quiet is Good". We're not hearing a lot about Houston, but if you deep dive into Houston media, there's reason for Houston hockey fans to be excited. The more Atlanta talk I hear (and I do think they're right behind Houston), the more I think Houston expansion is happening soon, because "quiet is good".
I just checked a map to see where the new Atlanta team would play, almost 35 miles north of their old Thrashers home. Not sure why they wouldn't move back to the city unless they feel like the x-burbs is a more suitable demographic for the new NHL team.
please do a video on the ownership change of MLSE effects the nhl
Atlanta had their chances…let's go Houston!
Was on flight from Pittsburgh to Atlanta back in October. Mario Lemieux was on it. He’s not visiting Atlanta to visit the Aquarium.
Wisconsin needs an NHL team before any southern state! I refuse to be a fan of a Shitcago or Murderapolis NHL team.
3rd time is the charm….. right?
It's up to owners not the commissioners
There are 7 Canadian teams in the League, that means there are at least 5 cities where the League are forgoing opportunities.
Leagues need to stop giving the same cities a team after they failed. Give some other cities a chance that have never had a team. There are some exceptions, like when owners are greedy and walk away with a team. That’s a bit more different.
I'm NEVER one to shy away from controversy, but I think MANY NHL fans will be with me on this one. Why do we NEED so many southern cities in the NHL? It's ICE hockey, not beach volleyball? Look, I'm of the belief that HALF of the NHL, by default, should be Canadian teams, it's THEIR national sport. Those who say some areas are not big enough to support so many Canadian-based teams, look a bit at the attendance for CFL games? Hamilton, Halifax & Saskatchewan could likely support NHL teams. I'd also like to see all Canadian teams in their own conference, that way a team from Canada is ALWAYS in the Stanley Cup finals. Getting back to Atlanta, a BIG NO! Ownership failed there twice already. learn the lesson.
Good summation of where the NHL is at in the process, and likely motivating factors for adding additional teams. While I am sure that the expansion fee is part of the financial benefit, they could get lots of fools to pay a large fee. I see the probability of enhancing annual financial returns year after year as a much greater driver on the financial side.
