If he is willing to take the role of 3rd line center at under $4 million he could have a spot on the team. Beyond that, bye, bye….
Whatever Mitch and JT are capable of doing, they're not doing it in Toronto. Time to go. If they both go someplace else next year and end up winning a Cup, so what? They weren't winning one in TO anyway so nothing's lost.

My first thought was Willy as well. The guy was literally just standing there on multiple occasions in gms 5 and 7. He and Marner WOULD NOT put their body on the line to make a play. Matthews at least did that.

Nylander may be soft and not scored any points in the last 3 games, but how about your Captain that your paying 13 million a season. Usually your highest payed player is your difference maker and no one is on this team.

I like Tavares and I know he wants to stay…but if he wants anymore than $4 million per year, I think he's getting too slow to keep as a 2nd line center.
Yes Steve, please ask Matthews (and everyone else) to float around in the neutral zone on the backpack to get breakaways. Maybe everyone can get 2 goals and be minus 4 because we're going to tell Matthews (and Marner) to not play the hard defensive minutes. Think about it…put Nylander on defensive duties and see what greatness you're portraying of Nylander.
And Jesse, you know what would work? Get/ develope a shut down 3rd line so your stars and first line don't burn themselves out playing defense all the time
games 5-6-7 have typically been the Achilles heal… that screams buckling under pressure. This was most evident 2021 against Montreal. Problem two-fold… leafs fan base and media create that environment where players are scared to make a mistake to the point they cant play at their best. McDavid plays 11 years, no cups, 1 cup final, had some terrible playoff games… never seen his jersey tossed on the ice. Thats an example of the environment in Toronto, and why they "freeze" up in clutch gamers. Hyman among others saw it and why they wanted out.
Four years ago, I was praying that they would trade Marner and keep Nylander. Now, if I could, I would trade him and keep Marner.. for two reasons his 102 pointsz none of them perform in the playoffs, so who cares who you keep? And the other reason is simply the looks on their faces after game seven Nelander look like he couldn’t wait to get on the plane and go back to Sweden. He almost had a smile on his face. You could tell Marner was upset. He looked more upset than Matthew’s. But you gotta keep Matthews unless he has another shitty season next year then you think about moving him too. And Steve fellow Steve. Hate to break it to you, buddy, but I guarantee you 1,000,000% they keep Tavares. I would bet my ball sack on it. You've slowly been converting me into a leafs fan, but you're about to lose me over the quite wild Nylander takes. I'm not gonna defend that what the entire core is putting up is enough, but any criticism sent Nylander's way should be leveraged on Matthews first, or not at all, and that's not what's happening. Nylander, Matthews, and Marner have the same job description, and Nylander is the only one coming close to fulfilling it, but yet his gap is the beginning middle and end? Absolutely ridiculous take.
Here it is! The whole offense was in affective, so why the hate of Mitch Marner? They all disappeared, halfway through game 3 vs. the Panthers. If you want to blame someone? Blame Matthews! 6'4"" and 230 pounds of frilly meat!!! Just won't use his size, and won't defend his teammates.! His teammates know, he has no physical game, and they stripped Tavares of the captaincy to kiss his ass. Things like this never happened 20 years ago. Shanahan should have been fired for doing that alone!

Tavares is rumored to sign for 5 million. Move him to 3C and use the 6 million to sign Knies short term. Allowing him to work for a raise as cap increases.

Use new cap space increase to sign Bennet to the 2W
Trade Rielly to a shitty team that needs experienced guys to get a cheaper second LD and get Brandon Tanev for the 4th line.

Please please please move on from Tavares (of course since JT brings huge amount of cash into the MLSE empire there is no way they will move on from JT). Remember MLSE is all about money. Tavares is the worst of the core 4 in the playoffs by far. MLSE media empire hacks Marner and Willie. Who gets a pass from the MLSE media empire? JT and AM.
Every Leafs was horrific in Game 5 and 7 vs FLA.
In 2014 the penguins blew a 3-1 series lead vs the rangers to bow out in the second round. A month later they traded James Neal (27 goals/61 points in 59 games) for hornqvist and spalling.
In 2015 after getting the doors blown off them in the first round by the rangers, the penguins traded Spaling, Harrington, Kapanen a first and a third to the leafs for Phil Kessel. They brought in Bonino, Cullen and traded David Perron for Hagelin.
They won back to back cups.
The leafs losing Marner and JT for nothing will do irreparable damage to their roster. They don’t have other chips to trade.

Sign Sam Bennet and Aaron Ekblad. The Leafs, in letting go Tavares and Marner, will have 21 milluon to spend. That is, if they want to come to "Tranta"? Most players don't want to because of the overly critical media and fans. They kill the joy of playing hockey.
Time for The Leafs to move on from fandramatics and figure out smart-guy hockey. Hire a full-time ref-watcher. It's not a "cap problem." Just beat the refs.
6 million a year for 2 years is a fair cost to the Leafs to keep JT.
I think there's a decent chance the Stars don't re-sign Duchene, so he could be a 2nd C option, although his performance in the playoffs leaves something to be desired a decent amount of the time
3.5 mill max 2 years, 3C shut down line. He can score his points during the regular season but come playoffs he’s you’re face off winning shutdown guy. He’s not gonna get you points anyway. That’s the only way I’d have him back.
Guys – it’s not just mental. Matthews and marner dont have the physical stuff to break through against a team like Florida who have a lot of guys who can do that
Nylander is the one Mathews and Marner are talking about. Nylander is a floater who waits to be sound in a breakaway.
