This is typical overvaluing a player. We are notorious for it in Toronto. We need to go back to the "earn your keep" mentality, if you want any hope of winning any time soon. And no no trade clauses. Have some respect for fan base for once. Time to be frugal. Time to be cheap. Other teams are able to do it. Put the squeeze on or send them packing. Anything over 6 for Knies would be a death sentence, and will prolong what would be an inevitable rebuild. 6 is being generous. 4-5 short term contract, and no trade clause would show a wanting to win mentality. That is what the team needs. A culture rebuild. This primadonna princess stuff has to end.

Old man Tavares skates like a 100 year old. He’s slow, he can’t to quick stops and starts and all his goals are scored within a 10 foot radius of the net. Guy is a 3rd liner at best and most 3rd liners earn 1.5 million a season. Dump him and develop a younger player.

How is it a generational just heist? He should sign at $2m for 2 years. Send a signal to the league that Toronto is in it to win in the next 2 years. Pressure Marner to sign something around $7m for 2 years. And other Ontario boys to come home and win it with the leafs. Like Bennett. $5m is not really a sign to the market we are going to win. He has to factor in that he was nowhere worth $11m per in his previous contract.

If Tavares will sign for 5M x 2, then offer him 4M x 3. He is the fittest Leaf & works the hardest on his game by many accounts. If Tree can find 2 wingers with wheels & more offensive upside who play reliable D, then he's still an effective centre. You are NOT going to find a UFA centre who is a PPG guy for 4 or 5M aav. Period. They need to stay away from costly guys like Ehlers & Duchene who also have a rep of fading in the playoffs. Target guys like Frederic, Pius Suter, Granlund, Roslovic, Donato, even Gourde, all better centres than Toronto's current bottom 6 imo & not outrageously expensive. Mangiapane, Palmieri, Beauvillier are wing options worth a look. Curious to see what Tree does now that he has the keys. No more Reaves or Bertuzzi's thank you.

I'm not paying JT $5M per. No chance. $2-3M tops. It's time to invest in guys who can bring a cup to TO. The core 4 need to be split up at this point. There's too much cap space eaten up by perennial playoff no-shows.
