Bowen Byram trade ideas for the Buffalo Sabres involving veteran defensemen

With Bo Byum’s name popping up in trade rumors, we have other teams, media, and bloggers coming up with trade ideas. I want to evaluate those trade ideas coming up on the Lockdown Sabres podcast. On today’s show, we will talk a little more about Bo and the potential for a trade this summer. The hottest topic for the Sabres, I believe, this summer is what is going to happen with Bum. So, we’ll get to that. couple of trade ideas from other markets, other media, other bloggers more so because I think that’s natural that he’s a 23-year-old Stanley Cup winning defenseman that had a pretty nice year with the Buffalo Sabres and reason to believe that he’ll get dealt. I would think that most teams would be talking about and fan bases would be considering and thinking about whether he is a good idea and what it would take to get him. If Byum was on another team and I saw that his name was popping up, I would absolutely be doing a show on Bo Byum. I think he rates to that degree. So, I’m gonna I got a couple of trade ideas that you might actually not hate. you know, in an exercise like this, I mean, think back to when Jack Eel trade negotiations are ongoing and conversation is happening. And remember the Rangers rumors, the Rangers blogs refusing to deal anybody to the Sabres and potential offers and maybe that’s how the Rangers actually operated, which is why he didn’t become a New York Ranger in part. Um, you could very easily get that in an exercise like this. But I have to say the couple that I found on the surface here, if there are enough of them, maybe we’ll do one a day. Um, the couple I have to lead off with here aren’t actually that bad. I think they’re interesting and I’ve got an idea of my own that I want to throw in the ring as well today. So, some Bum talk and then little playoff talk a little bit later on. The Oilers are two wins away from the Stanley Cup final. And I’m thinking today and was reading the other day about Jeff Skinner. Really not nothing happening with Jeff Skinner, but I was reading about him and not playing. He has not played since game one of the first round. So I I got a thought on him a little bit later on in today’s show, names on the cup and him in the lineup and not in the lineup. And you know, there’s got an interesting question about him coming up in a little bit. But let’s get right into it with Bo Byum. Uh we’ve talked about him on WGR of course in the mornings. I have on uh the Jeremy Joe show from 6:00 to 10 and got a couple of them for you today of other people coming up with trade ideas. Byum to anybody is interesting depending on what the offer is and when you think of what the right offer is for Boyram, it’s not easy to really figure out. My favorite idea that I’ve spoken about is swapping Bum, a good Dalene partner, not a good Owen Power partner. His numbers with power very poor for a guy that you can plan on playing or trying to play with Owen Power and Dene could play with either Matias Samuelson, I hope he gets traded, maybe somebody more replaceable than that even. That to me is the right type of move. That’s a hockey trade. trading him for picks and prospects. Don’t even want to rule that out as a good idea because I like the idea of doing that. You get a first round pick, maybe a prospect on top of that for Bo Byum. I think that’s a fair cost for what defenseman go for, especially one that’s 23 years old and has the experience that he does. You do that and you earmark that pick and prospect for another trade for this power partner that I’m talking about that we’ve been waiting on. It has not happened yet. Well, the two deals that I found, and again, maybe if if we find enough of these, I should look through Twitter, too, because even though those are going to be more so fans, um, you can find some good ones there, too, or some really bad ones. These two are a Leafs one from Maple Leafsdaily.com and then also from Picks and uh, Pucks and Pitchforks, a blog about the New Jersey Devils. Two teams, both in the Eastern Conference. I don’t really worry about that personally. I don’t really think the Sabres would too much. Maybe they would. Um I wouldn’t. So, got a couple of ideas from those two teams. And then I have one for the Bruins. Bruins getting Byum because I think he kind of works there. Um and they are going to shake things up for sure after the season that they just had. They don’t sit on their toes after a season like that. But let’s start with the the ones from out of market, out of town first. Let’s start in Toronto. The one in Toronto I think is the most interesting one. So, mapleafsdaily.com writing about this topic. They had the idea. Now, he’s got this guy’s got no movement clause. That’s obviously always a problem here with this. So, you know, play work with me for a moment. The Sabres trading Bowen Bum to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Morgan Riley. Again, not my idea. This is a Leaf’s idea. Just putting it out into the universe for everybody to read and everybody to see. Morgan Riley, a 12-year pro in the league, 31 years old. So 8 years older, eight years older than Bo Byum. Tons of playoff experience. Not necessarily good playoff experience, but tons of playoff experience. Um 873 games in the NHL. It’s kind of crazy he’s played that many. I mean, he really has stayed largely healthy throughout his entire career and got there when he was 19 years old. So, that plays into it as well. And it was kind of seen as a down year for Morgan Riley because he didn’t put up a lot of points, only 41 points on the year. I mean, this is a player that’s 68 points a couple of years ago. Riley though, some of the advanced numbers look pretty favorably on him, especially offensively, generating offense, maybe, you know, a little bit better in his own end than he had been in the past. So, Riley to the Sabres for Bo. So, I put that in our our text club and um not necessarily a favorite idea for some, but more of more so I would say most texters like this idea. Um, one textter tweeting back about this trade. Um, I like it. I like the the I like the experience the Sabres would be adding and the potential for Riley to be a Owen Power partner. Now Riley is a left shot defenseman, but there are some numbers that indicate that power is better on the right side, his off hand. So maybe you go Riley on the left, power on the right. The thing here is age. It’s age. Do you are you okay with the Sabres getting that much older on the blue line? And I am not opposed to it. If Riley was willing to come here and the lease wanted to make that deal, I would absolutely say yes to that. I think Riley is a better def all-around defenseman right now than Bo Byum is. That’s what I would care the most about. The Leafs, meanwhile, I mean, what would they be doing it for? They’re trying to get their next Morgan Riley, their next guy that could turn into a number one defenseman. I mean, everybody on that blue line except for Brandon Carlo is north of 30 years old. So, that’s what they would be doing it for is the next step, the next 10 years of a Leaf’s defenseman. Uh, they’d have to pay him, too. Riley, by the way, if you’re wondering, he does have a hefty contract. $7.5 million per year until 2030. So, five more years of $7.5 million per year. Not cheap. Not cheap. And that would take him to age 36 years old. So, I like that idea though. I like that idea. And it’s kind of a It’s a big name. It would get uh it would get the blood pumping, I think, a little bit. And then the other one kind of interesting that both of these blogs can came came up with training a bigname defenseman older for the younger Bo Byum pitch pucks and pitchforks devils blog their idea is trading Douggee Hamilton to the Buffalo Sabres they even label it as I’m not sure the Devils would want to do this but they kind of phrased it as though that was their favorite idea or an idea they liked trading Douggee Hamilton this summer. Now, that one is a little more complicated than Morgan Riley is because Hamilton has had some injury problems in the past couple of years. This past year though, got in 64 games, played right to the very end of the season, played in the postseason against the Hurricanes where the Devils got smoked, um, and looked good doing it. 40 points. I mean, the points are there. I’m not watching them on a day-to-day basis. What I’ve read from this blog though was a little bit more in the middle was Hamilton’s performance. Um, now bigger contract for Douggee Hamilton. He chose to go to New Jersey in free agency. A big hefty $9 million cap hit for Douggee Hamilton. Only three more years though, not five, three more years for Hamilton, taking him to July of 2028. also 31 years old. So, and also by the way, no movement clause, which might shut this down immediately, but you’ve got eight years older this player than Byum. Um, like Morgan Riley, you have a lot of playoff experience for Douggee Hamilton. Um, Carolina, New Jersey, Boston, of course, way earlier in his career. So, you got another offensive defenseman, though. And that’s kind of like Riley, too. You’re you’re getting back in these ideas, good players, and ideas that I like because I think you’re getting a better all-around player right now, and you’re sacrificing youth for that. You’re also getting two teams that would be saying goodbye to people that have committed to them. And I’m not sure. I think Toronto might be more likely to do that than New Jersey right now since Hamilton chose to go there. um obviously not likely to be done, but trades that were thrown out there into the universe that I both like. I like both of them. I like the idea of getting a veteran defenseman. Hamilton shoots right, so if you care about that, I mean again, power shoot playing on the right to me is okay, even maybe preferable. Um you’re not getting though the big physical stay-at-home defenseman that you might envision for an Owen Power partner, which is how I envision it. I thought of Boston today and I got an idea when it comes to Bo Byum and the Bruins when we come back. Maybe it’s also ridiculous. It’s also a one for one hockey trade. Um I got a Bruins idea when we come back. Stay tuned. It’s the Locked On Sabres podcast with Sneaky Joe Debiosi. Today’s episode of the Locked OnSabers podcast is presented by Wonderful Pistachios. We’re just, you know, throwing around some Bo Byum trade ideas today. I think he’s getting dealt. If I, if I need that to be said further, maybe you’re not a, you know, frequent listener of the podcast. Hope you become one. Um, I’ve been saying repeatedly since the fall, I think what’s likely to happen is that Bo Byum is going to get traded off this roster. In fact, how far do I have to go back to find an episode on our feet where I’m saying I think that he’s going to get dealt or that he could be dealt at some point in time. Um, if you go back to let’s see here. Yeah, the fall. Um, I guess Oh, January 2nd. January 2nd, we did a show on the on this feed. Is Bo Byum long for Buffalo? And at that point in time, I did not believe that. And five months later, I’m more solidified in that than ever. So, I think it’s going to happen. threw a couple ideas out there that other fan bases had, other bloggers had, and we’ll have more of those. By the way, we might do a Byum trade idea of the day today. Here’s one from me. It’s a team that you’re gonna need to be really pissed off at the season they just had and everybody is available or no one is safe off the Boston Bruins roster after finishing horrendously 76 points. One of the worst Bruins seasons in my memory, you know, back to when the Sabres were in the conference finals 0506 0607. Those are the teams that the Bruins Yeah. last time the Bruins didn’t have a great team. The Bruins blue line last year, not so great. Now, part of it was Charlie Makavoy dealt with injury. He had that devastating injury at the Four Nations that that took him out and then there was the bungling of it in the hospital. He missed 32 games on the year. Makavoy, there’s been some debate about whether he’s the same player in the first place compared to maybe what he was five years ago when he was a true number one defenseman for the Bruins. So, you’ve got Makavoy there, though, and that’s still a 24 25 minute a night big minute eating defenseman. Past that. And by the way, Makavoy this past year, four points on the power play. And what have we been saying about Bram? One of the big things he’s going to be looking for in my opinion, power play opportunity. Maybe that job is available to him if he were in Boston to be the number one power play defenseman even over Mackaoy. The Bruins, what do they what do the Bruins have that I’m looking for? It’s really the name that I like for the Sabres, the type of player that I am thinking about for the Sabres. I don’t think the Bruins would want to move off this guy. It would really their motivation would just have to be they love Byum. That the GM loves Byum. Somebody in that organization would be pushing for this that they love this guy. You know, I get I’m pretending I’m Kevin Adams and I get a call from Don Sweeney and the Bruins want Byum and they’re really motivated and I know they’re motivated and they’re in my division so I want to hold their feet to the fire. What do I want? It’s got to hurt. You’re getting a 20 in division trade. You’re getting a 23 year old defenseman with a with a potential a high ceiling top five pick. It’s going to have to hurt. You have to pay a premium. All right. I want one of your guys that you’re going to that you like. Value-wise, other people in the league might not even think this is in favor of the Sabres. They might think it’s in favor of the Bruins. What about Nikita Zidorov? What about Nikita Zidorov? Again, don’t think the Bruins would want to deal him at all. They probably love him. They probably see him as a a Charara light, you know, big mean defenseman that bullies you. I mean, he threw some hits and he was throwing bodies around all season long. He played a big role for them. I mean, 20 minutes 37 seconds a night, but he’s not better than Hampus Lindholm when Hampus Lindholm is healthy. Uh, I know that didn’t happen last year. He only played 17 games. and Makavoy missed all those games. So, part of Zidorov playing all those minutes was injury around him, but he played a big role. And he’s turned into a pretty nice player. You know, he’s not awesome. He’s not an amazing player. He never played 20 minutes a night until this season when he got to Boston. Um, but he’s the Isn’t he exactly what Saber fans are dreaming about for a for a number three, number four defenseman to pair with an Owen Power to pair with a even a Dalene? Isn’t he the type of player that you’re looking for? Big, physical, mean, no question about whether he’s going to stand up for teammates, making the Sabres more of a bully. And I think a lot of people want to see them become that. Zidorov to me is that, but also a pretty good player. And that is why he’s enticing to me. And if I were Kevin Adams and the Bruins asked me about Bo Byum, the name I would give back to them would be Nikita Zidorov. Okay, got you want you want Byum. What about Zidorov? Now again, part of the unlikelihood of this is that the Bruins just committed to Nikita Zidorov one year ago and they gave him a pretty good contract. Zidorov is signed for same as Morgan Riley through the 2930 season. So he doesn’t become a free agent until July of 2030 for $5 million a year. And he also has a no trade clause. So there’s that. um less money than Riley, less money than obviously uh Douggee Hamilton. So, it’s a very different type of defenseman that the Sabres would be getting their hands on. The Bruins would have to want Byum and be willing to part Widor off, which is why this deal is very unlikely. But if it did, you know, let me know your thoughts. Maybe you love the deal, maybe you hate the deal. This is one of those trades where I would imagine there’s a a love or hate a buyer for Zidorov defenseman a trade because guys like Zidorov are polarizing I think. Um but I think he’s a good player and I think he’s become of a good player and let’s have it go full circle. He’s 30 so seven years older than Byron but um I’d like to see him on the sabers back on the sabers again when we come back. Quick thought on Jeff Skitter who’s just kind of disappeared in the Stanley Cup playoffs, not playing in the lineup, but maybe he was close to playing. I I gotta get it something in on him when we come back. Sneaky Jody Biosi back here on the Locked On Sabres podcast. Be sure to check us out at WGR, of course, during the week 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. be capacio on Wednesday morning. Um, so the playoffs are ongoing and the Oilers are up 2-1 on the Dallas Stars and that series, by the way, is again tonight 8:00 puck drop on Tuesday night. Jeff Skinner is on the Edmonton Oilers. He has not played since game one of the first round. And I was thinking about him the other day because I read a story from the Edmonton Journal, uh, David Staples from the Edmonton Journal writing about the Oilers. This is over the weekend. And there was a questionable hit in the Star series against the Oilers. Connor Brown uh, got taken out. Now, he ended up he ended up playing, right? Um, did not skate before game two. So, this is going back a couple of days again over the weekend. Jess Skinner was the one that was in placed in Brown’s spot on the third line when Brown didn’t play against Skinner who hasn’t played since game one of the first round. They chose to put him on that line in practice. Again, it’s only practice over Victor Arvdson, who has also been a healthy scratch, but he has played more games these playoffs and is more seen more as a two-way player. So, two things on Skinner. one. I really hope he gets in. I’m I’ve always been a big Jeff Skinner guy. I’ve loved Jeff Skinner as a player. Um, and it was cool that he got his one game in the playoffs to to get rid of that record of the most games NHL history without ever appearing in the playoffs. Isn’t there though? If if you like if you’re a big Skinner guy like me or you just maybe you just liked him, only playing one game will kind of feel like a token gesture from the Oilers rather than, oh, you deserve to be there. And you could debate whether he deserves to be in that lineup. I think for right now, why would they put him in? He’s doing great or they’re doing great without him. Uh they don’t need him at all. But I’m just I’m hoping he gets more than one game. And I’m not really feeling like it’s all that likely, but it might not be impossible because there’s a little bit of a sign there that the Oilers might be one injury away up front from placing him in the lineup. Um the other thing is when I was reading this piece from David Staples, maybe Skinner does deserve to be in the lineup or has a case for it. He wrote in the Edmonton Journal, um, “Interesting to see Skinner slot in the skate on the third line and not Victor Iverson, who played a solid two-way hockey for the Oilers in the playoffs.” Of course, in his one game against the LA Kings, Skinner also played well. Skinner, by the way, had an assist in that game. So, one point in one game. I guess that wouldn’t be bad. One point per playoff game to go out on top. Um, Staples writes, “I’d love on Skinner, I’d love to see him get another chance. Skinner was one of the Oils best wingers in the final months of the 24-25 season. In his final 36 games, Skinner had 17 points and was a plus 12. He skated well, was dangerous on the attack, and back checked consistently improving on his leaky defensive play early on in the season. So, he writes, “Skinner started to win over the coach. Many fans with his improved play in the second half of the year. So maybe there’s a case for him to be in the lineup, but there might have to be another injury. I mean, if Vander Kane, who didn’t play in the regular season, kind of took that spot. So I don’t know that he gets in without the injury, but I’m hoping that he does. Um, the other thing is about your name on the Stanley Cup. His name will be on the Stanley Cup if they win it. you know, he only gets the one playoff game, but playing 72 games in the regular season. The the rules are, I think, that he’s going to be on the uh Stanley Cup that the names on that and you have to play I think it’s 50 games uh 41, no it’s 41 games or one Stanley Cup final game. So, if he gets one final game, that would have qualified too, but he got the 41 regular season games. So, if the Oilers win the Stanley Cup again, you’ll get your snarky people that didn’t like Jeff Skinner as a saber or you get these hardcore dinosaur hockey people that think he’s the worst player ever because he doesn’t play good defense. Um, will say, “Oh, well, you know, he didn’t he didn’t really earn it because he didn’t play in the playoffs.” Um, but I think it’ll be cool if Skinner gets his name on the cup. And it also won’t be like when Eel won the cup or when Reinhardt won the cup or when O’Reilly won the cup where you have a critical former Saber thriving in another environment leading that team to the Stanley Cup. Skinner of course much more much more much much more of a passenger uh if the Oilers go on to win it. I’m rooting for Oilers and Panthers of course um for that to be the finals rematch. All right, that’s going to do it for us today here on the Locked Sabres podcast. Coming up on tomorrow’s show, there is a pretty big NHL site that has a trade bait board where the number one trade bait listed player for the summer is JJ Purka. We’ll talk about Purka, maybe a couple of ideas about him and what the future holds for Purka amongst other things. That’s coming up on tomorrow’s show. If you would like more on the Stanley Cup playoffs, be sure to check out Locked on NHL game night. That’s available wherever you get your podcast, also on YouTube. So, be sure to check it out. And we’ll talk to you tomorrow here on the Lockdown Savers podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.

There are trade rumors about Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram, which naturally has led to trade ideas from out of town fans, media, and blogs. Sneaky Joe looks at a couple of trade ideas involving the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New Jersey Devils, and has a Byram trade of his own involving the Boston Bruins. What type of veteran defenseman could the Sabres land for Byram? Could the Sabres land the likes of Morgan Rielly?

Plus, what’s going on with Jeff Skinner in Edmonton, and why he could be an injury away from getting back in the Oilers lineup.

  1. Calgary has a quite a few right handed defensemen. Weegar or Andersson would be nice to get. Weegar would cost Byram and a first round pick but Andersson might be straight up. But both would have to wave their no movement clause.

  2. Lol Trades are just not viable for the Sabres, between no trade clauses, a complete moron who doesn't have a clue in Kevyn Adams, and a clueless owner who wants to be a part of every decision in Terry Pegula. This team is doomed, I'd be shocked if anything positive happens for this team.
