Leafs should do a sign and trade with Marner to get some assets back in return. Resign Tavares at 5 Million if he's willing to stay for that.

Dude has played 2 years in the league. Nathan McKinnon signed for 6.3M X 7 years after playing 3 full years in the league when the salary Cap was 73M. Now it is 87M approximately 20% higher. Do the math. Nathan McKinnon is likey the 2nd best player in the NHL, paid his dues and earns 12.6M. Based on these numbers and years of experience and ability that makes Knies a Max 4M dollar player.

This is why Leafs fans deserve everything they get. Why would you want Taveres back? He is part of the problem. At 35 he is already slow as molasses and was totally exposed in the playoffs and it’s not going to get worse as he ages. They need a culture change and he does not have the mentality to compete in the playoffs and it bleeds over to the rest of the team. There is a reason in a 15 year career that Tavares have never gotten past the 2nd round.
There is not an ounce of proof that Taveres was offered 13 million a year by San Jose or any other team, it’s a complete myth. That’s what agents do to drive up the price for their clients and the Leafs totally fell for it…and thier fans too apparently. At that time in 2018, he would have been the highest paid player by 2+ million a year while not even being a top 20 player. What team in their right mind would have done that for a player who has not been really close to scoring 50 goals or 100 points.
They need to dump Reilly and is $7.5 million.

Here what we do… We sign JT to 5 years $22M (AAV $4.5M) contract paying him $8M this year and next and and then $2M for the last 3 years, that way he can earn while he can still play and then he can go to Robida Island and they can trade the last years of his salary to a CAP floor team like the Kraken for nothing so the can hit the cap floor.

I think if the Leafs are smart sign him to another 3yr deal for $4.5-$5 Mil, after a 58pt season & 9pt playoff run this year. Play him with Papi again & let's see what happens. Let Knies prove his worth even more, than the Leafs will know 100%. Then sign him long term for great money.

Be realistic. Tavares scored more goals in the regular season and in the playoffs than Matthews, You want to insult him by paying him less than 50% of his current contract? If he wants to stay a Leaf then a 1 year deal for his current salary is the route to go. As a percentage of the overall cap Tavares would be taking a cut and the Leafs are only on the hook for one year. If he scores 38 goals again resign him. If his production drops to 20 then re-evaluate at the end of the year. Players who score at Tavares's rate are difficult to find.
The hatred toward Marner turned when Babcock was coach! He treated Marner like a little kid and the fans picked it up!
4.5 Million should be the Max. Marchant took 6.5 Mil in his prime.
There is a history of players that took a paycut to help the team with payroll, like Dirk Nowitzki in the NBA. If Tavares is truly passionate about being a Leaf, he would gladly take a paycut.
The fans have more heart than the players
Maybe Brad Treliving should call each player into the office and ask each player who would they would trade and who they would sign to bring better chemistry to the team. Obviously, skill brought nothing to the Leafs. Same disappointment at the end of the year. Playoffs are a new season and heart and hard work should be the norm. If Matthew's is going to be hurt every playoff series, then trade him. Look at the playoffs now, those teams have a true chemistry to win the cup.
All of the players need to be reassessed,and their contracts tweaked. Also if they make a deal on a contract,they need to state they get less if they not scoring in playoffs.
JT is a solid player and actually has the drive to win, I think he'll take a cut to stay because he actually wants to build a winning team. We need depth more than anything if we want to be a cup contender. You can't rely on a single line to score goals and expect to make a deep run in the playoffs. I absolutely want Knies to stay and I do like Matthews too despite his lack of scoring in the playoffs he's a multi dimensional player who's good all over the ice. Im not sure we can afford to pay him what we do if we really want that depth but if Marner walks that changes.
JT shit on Islanders. So I despise him. But objectively he is not a leader and will not do much in playoffs as he doesn't score against good great goalies. Bob had his number, imagine that. So evidence is he will score against scrappy teams and scrappy goalies during season. Wow. 😂

Please, nobody is paying 8M for a 35 yr. old. John Tavares has been a great Leaf, but he is one of the players that the team has been unable to win with. You cannot commit to that for another 3 or 4 yrs. it's insanity!
