NJ Devils Luke Hughes Is About To Become A RICH Man | Looking At The Upcoming Contract

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes is a Restricted Free Agent. It is expected that the NJ Devils will announce a contract extension for Luke this summer. People have been speculating as to what the contract will come in at. In this video I take a look at some comparable contracts that have been signed, and predict what I think the contract will be. I also discuss the impact this deal will have on bringing Quinn Hughes to the Devils as well.

I discuss this all and more in this video.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

  1. If the Devils can’t move Dougie or Palat, then they pretty much have to trade Nemec. Potentially Casey too if Quinn comes over. And if Gritsyuk is good, that is going to cause even more problems. But…good problems to have

  2. 3x5M is what he is worth and even that is too much for a injury prone player who makes a lot of mistakes

  3. 8 to Jack , 9 to Luke , 10 to Quinn . That’s a lot of LTIR money . Unfortunately Fitz doesn’t know how to use it .

  4. I know this isn’t going to happen, but, it would be smart to try to sign Luke to his “team friendly”(easier to trade if necessary), contract and wait 2 years for Quinn. Devils don’t need to be locked down for the next 8-10 years in Bros contracts if Jack keeps going down with injuries late into the season, for the next two years+. The Devils can end the Hughes Bros experiment and move on with only having Luke on the books. Plus we don’t know how Luke is going to pan out, he is injury prone also. I don’t know if it’s a good idea for the Devils to put all their eggs into the Hughes’ genetic basket. It’s hard to crap on Quinn because he already won a Norris. I’m just worried about the Bros making it 82 games and being able to be the difference makers in the playoffs. A decade of NJ Devils hockey could be riding on these guys. They need to slow play this and set themselves up for a team without the Bros if it comes down to it. Not that I want that, but I also don’t want 8-10 years of the last two.
    Hope this makes sense.

  5. $9.25×8 unless he takes mercy on Fitz and maybe takes $8.75. Quinn will get even more and down the road they’ll have to keep Jack where he is without a raise if he can’t get healthy. Let’s hope the cap goes up more than we think it will lmao

  6. Fitz has to make some smart moves. I think he’s been good in the off seasons (piss poor in season and at trade deadlines) so I have some faith.

I wonder if they could do a blockbuster package deal with vancouver for Quinn and some forwards and clear our some of our cap.

  7. I don’t know if anyone saw but the devs are supposed to be hiring Brad Shaw for an assistant coach position. He will make Luke, nemec, and Kovacevic into our best defenseman. From what I’ve read he’s the reason werenski and drysdale are as good as they are. I have no problem with Luke taking a big contract if this guy is hired.

  8. I don’t think people realize part of the main reason we lost to Carolina ( so badly) was Luke being down. Also apparently the pp without Jack was better, and that’s actually probably cause Keefe said he put luke on pp1 cause like Dougie went down in a similar time frame. Keefe has improved him Immensely and credit to him, especially paring him with Brett Pesce his defensive metrics have gotten way better

  9. Let’s all give some claps to Fitz for signing that great Palat contract!👏🏼 Fitz deserves gm of the century I mean come on

  10. Everyone gets 8+ million and shoulder surgeries…where are we going with this…? I may be an outlier here, but I have zero interest in the Hughes brothers. Jack's already shown us that he can't stay healthy and now the same thing is happening with Luke. Does anyone honestly believe these dudes are built for deep playoff runs? You can't deny their talent, but thinking they'll take us to the promise land is denying reality.

  11. Bouchard signed 2×3.9M two years ago after hitting above 80 points during the Regular season and being above point per game during the playoffs. Why the hell should Luke get 8×9 or similar? Bouchard is a better player too. But of course we have Tommy F as a GM. So Luke will get full NMC and 9M for 8 years, will never be a player everyone hopes he can be, will be injured often and impossible to trade. Welcome to the world of Tom Fitzgerald.

  12. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the cap issue after singing luke and how only making a big trade involving either dougie or palat is the only way to make BIG changes to the forward group. Idk if Fitz is capable of making a big boy move tho…

  13. I'm thinking 8.75 to 9 X 8yrs. The big issue is moving a guy like palat and that contract will probably be tough to do unless u throw in a prospect and or pick unfortunately.

  14. I agree, Ace. Can't be greedy. I would love it if Luke signed for 8 million, and then we got Quinn for 8 as well. That would be amazing.

  15. Luke is going to ask for 8.6 mil. With Luke not being able to be offer sheeted I think he will be signed in late July. Which is good cause this team has a couple players they need to move out or buy out

  16. Value wise I could understand Lukes camp pushing for something north of 9m but if Fitz and Luke are serious about uniting all three Hughes bros does Luke give a discount/set bonus and signs for like $8.15m? (Quinn got 7.85, Jack got 8 so Luke gets 8.15).

  17. Ace I wish your 7-8 million prediction from earlier this year would happen. Hopefully Luke isn’t greedy and signs a team friendly deal. Either way he will be a rich young man.

  18. You already know I'm a Luke Hughes believer haha and obviously I'm not in the room but I think that this team from top to bottom has bought in. Everyone has arguably left money on the table, even Timo who I've been critcial of at 9 million per, I think if he hits free agency even AT THE TIME this current contract was signed his number starts with 11 mil, probably more today. But he took a bit of a paycut to stay here. I think the most likely for Luke is somewhere around 9 million, my main concern is I want those 8 years. I'm okay overpaying a bit for all 8 of those years. Now again I don't know Luke but I think he's going to surprise us on this one, my prediction is 8×8. I think Lukes potential really is top 3 dman in the NHL, I think he's going to have some EK65 seasons while also playing good defense (and not just "good defense for an offensive-defenseman"). I'm also hoping they don't make us wait and have the deal done before the draft.

Anyway in my hallucinated playoffs the Devils took game 2 as well, 5-1 (Nico hattrick) trouncing over the Panthers, the series goes back to Sunrise with a 2-0 DEVILS LEAD, LETS GO DEVILS!

  19. Luke should leave a little on the table because, to win, we need a top 6 forward, let alone he wants his brother to come over.

  20. so much for my boys winning when it matters, more like getting shitkicked when it matters. playing 2 mid teams and then the real deal is a huge change tho

  21. Love Luke but GM will overpay because he hasn't any experience. This is also what happens when you have brothers on a team,. They tuen into a union.

  22. Look at the Panthers performance tonight, Game#3. This is why I do not trust Fitzgerald when he says he is asking "What is depth scoring?"
