NHL Offseason Preview: Flames to start to add, CBJ to make goalie moves and add depth on D.

Well, we’re up to this point in the offseason preview series, the two closest teams in the Eastern Conference and Western Conference to make the playoffs. But myth is who the two teams we’re going to be talking about in this video. We’re going to be looking at the Calgary Flames and the Columbus Blue Jackets, talking about how they did this past year, looking forward to the UFAS, RFAS in their draft capital. I’m going to give you my opinion on what they could do in the offseason to improve and maybe actually make the playoffs next year with all the updates for Calgary and Columbus coming up right now. [Music] Hello everyone. Welcome back to another video here at the end to end hockey channel. Before we get this video, don’t forget to like this video and subscribe below. We’re on the road to 500 subscribers. So, if you can hit the subscribe button down below. And in today’s video, we’ve got another offseason preview video here to discuss. So, in today’s video, we’re looking at the Calgary Flames and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Two teams who had very good seasons this past year. The Jackets missed all in the playoffs by a mere two points. Well, the Kawi Flames were tied for the last playoffs on the Western Conference, but missed the playoffs due to tiebreaking procedure. So, these two teams got extremely close to making the playoffs and ending their playoff droughts, but it’s going to last at least a year longer as they do miss in the playoffs this year. So, we’re going to start off with Calgary Flames. Even though they were closer to making the playoffs, they were the first of the two teams eliminated. So, we’ll touch on them first. So, they didn’t do overly bad. They actually had 40 plus wins this year. Finished the year with the record of 4127 and 14. So, they had under 30 regulation losses above 40 wins. Had they gotten one more point somewhere, whether that be one of their overtime losses or a win or whether that be one of the regulation losses or an overtime loss, they would have made the playoffs. they would have been able to make the playoffs and either play Vegas or Winnipeg in round one, which would have been very interesting. So, the fact that the Calgary Flames last offseason were announced and they were going to go down a retool or rebuild path and then they get this close to making the playoffs is very, very good signs there for Calgary. So, 41274 record, not overly bad. If you look at their point scoring and goalc scoring leaders for this season, the point scoring leader was Nasam Kry who had a really good season for the K Flames putting up 67 points. Jonathan Hubo was second on the team with 62 points and Mackenzie Winger and Matthew Coronado were tied for third on the team in points with 47. So very interesting stuff there. The youngster Coronado had a really good season. Well, the three main pieces this team got to try and sort of turn over the roster and Cadrey Hero and Wager were the other three points leaders but still only two of them actually hit over the 60 point plateau or even over the 50 point plateau. So very interesting stuff there. If for the goal scoring leaders, Kadri also led a team in goal scoring with 35 goals. Hubido had 28 goals and Coronado had 24 goals. So only 130 plus goal scorer which isn’t overly great stuff there for a team who wants to try and make the playoffs. So interesting stuff there. But Kadri, Hubo, Coronado were the three-point drivers for the Flames this season, but was still not enough to get them into the playoffs. If you look at more of their other stats, goalc scoring, goals against, and their power play penalty kill. Goal scoring wise, this team was awful. is a surprise how close they got to the playoffs with how terrible of a goalc scoring team they were. They had 220 goals this year, which was 29th in the NHL. So, you’re not going to get very far if you have a 29th ranked goalc scoring team, which is what the Calgary Flames had. So, it explains a whole big reason as to why this team missed the playoffs. Goals was a lot better. They only led in 236 goals of the games, which was tied for 15th in the NHL. So, they were actually above 500, above the average mark in the goals against department. That’s very interesting stuff there for the Flames is they didn’t have as bad of a goals against as they did goal scoring. Their power play was subpar but not overly poor. They had a 21% power play unit which was 19th in the NHL. So it wasn’t overly great but wasn’t atrocious either. Where the penalty kill was a lot worse. They had a 76.1% PK which was 25th in the NHL. So we’re almost a bottom five team in the penalty kill which is not overly good for a team who’s trying to make the playoffs. So goal scoring wise they were awful. Goals against wise they were okay. Power play wise could have definitely been better and penalty killwise with one of the worst in the NHL. So interesting stats there. They currently have $27.8 million in projected cap space for his upcoming season. Three reasons I think this team missed the playoffs were one they had no goal scoring. Like I said Kadri led the team in goal scoring as well as Hubo Cornell. like those three all had really good seasons, but their depth was nowhere to be seen. We know this team lacked talent and it showed by this team not scoring a whole bunch of goals this year and I think that was probably the main reason they score a couple more goals, win a couple more games, they’re in the playoffs, but it did not do that and that is the first reason I think this team is the playoffs. Second reason was bad penalty kill. Like that team had a sub 80 penalty kill which is not overly great. They were almost at 75% BK which is very embarrassing. So given that fact, I think the Flames bad penalty kill was another major reason as to why this team wound up falling out of the playoff race. And the third reason in my opinion this team missed the playoffs this year was a team started a rebuild. Like this team was not a team who was supposed to be challenging for a playoff spot. They said that they were going to start a rebuild. Only move the main season was trading Fab and Frost for Kuzeno. It was an interesting move there. It does help them a little bit short term, maybe even longer term, too, but that’s the only move they made. They didn’t really do anything to add or subtract. So, it was a very interesting season there for the Flames. But the fact that this team was starting a rebuild phase was another reason in my opinion that this team missed the playoffs. So, in my opinion, no goal scoring, a bad PK, and the fact this team started rebuild were three main reasons in my opinion why this Flames team wound up missing the playoffs. Going over to their significant pending UFO phase, RFAS, and their draft capital. So, as current point in time to look at their pending UFAS, not anyone here who’s overly significant. They have Anthony Mantha, Justin Kirkland, Kevin Rooney, Martin Fk, Tyson Barry, Jared Torti, Joel Hanley, and Dan Vadar. Vadar had a 1211 and six record with a 2.80 JA and 898 save percentage, which was actually a really good backup for Dustin Wolf. I could definitely see him be brought back in like a one to two-year deal. Also would not be one bit surprised if he left via free for agency. So, we’ll have to wait and see on that. You have Joel Hanley who had two goals and seven assists, nine points in 53 games. You had Barry who had a goal and three points in 13 games. Both are decent third pair of the defenseman at this point in time. Wouldn’t be surprised if they were brought back on short-term deals. Wouldn’t be surprised if they left. Yosh Jared Snorty and Martin Ferg didn’t get into any NHL action this year. Could definitely see those two guys leave. You have Kevin Rooney who had five goals and 10 points in 70 games. Would not be one bit surprised that the Flames moved off of Kevin Rooney as he’s a decent fourthline center, but I think he could wind up leaving. You have Justin Kirkland who had two goals and eight points in 21 games. Could definitely see him be brought back as like a younger bomb six forward for the Calgary Flames. And then you also have Anthony Massa who had four goals and seven points in 13 games suffered a season ending injury early in the season. I could maybe see him be brought back like a one-year deal because he actually had a really good start with Calgary. Also wouldn’t be surprised if he left via free agency. So we’ll have to wait and see on that. But UFA headlined by Mantha Hanley and Vadar for the Calgary Flames. If they’re pending RFAS, there are a lot more interesting players on their RFA side. You have Frost, Zary, Clapka, Bal, Kusnet and Porier. Now, Kusenov and Puera are top prospects. We didn’t get into any NHL action this year. I definitely think both those guys will be brought back on shorter term deals. You have Kevin Bald who had three goals and 20 points in 73 games in his first season with Calgary. Looked like a really solid third or second pair of defenseman. So, I definitely think he’s coming back. You have Adam Clapka who had four goals and six points in 28 games. Really solid player that I think is probably also going to be brought back probably like a one to two year deal shorter term low AV. You have Connor Zer who had 13 goals and 27 points in 54 games. I still think Zary is going to be this team’s future second line center on this team. So I definitely think Zary is going to be brought back. And you have Morgan Frost who had 14 goals and 37 points in 81 games. It was a solid season for Frost. Really did fit in quite well with Calgary after the trade. So I definitely think he’ll be brought back too. So Frost, Zary, and Bal are three big RFAS for this Calgary Flames team. We’ll have to wait and see if they do sign them. and if they do sign them to what sort of deals. Going over to the draft capital K Flames have for this current offseason. So at this point in time they have the average amount you’d expect a team to have and that’s seven. So for a team who miss the playoffs it’s not overly bad. They currently have two first round picks. It’s the Devils and the Panthers. They have the Avalanche second round pick. Their own third round pick. They have no fourth round pick for this upcoming season. And they also have a fifth, a sixth and a seventh round pick. So they have their own picks in the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh round. none of their picks in the fourth, the second, or the first round, but they do still have three picks in the first two rounds, which is still overly good. So, interesting note there. But the Flames have two first round picks and seven picks in total for this upcoming Ase, which isn’t overly bad. And last, we’re going over to five ways I think this Calgary Flames team could improve in the offseason to get better for next year. So, first in my opinion, has to be moving one of, if not two or three of the Backland or Coleman. These guys are all in my opinion their best trade chips on the forward group. Farab was brought in like we talked about at the trade deadline for Philadelphia. Farab is a decent Mil 6×4 but didn’t really fit overly great in Calgary. Backlin is the team’s captain. He’s a solid thirdline center for the Calgary Flames. But he’s also entering the final year of his deal. So if the Flames do not feel they’re going to be a playoff team next year, I would not be one bit surprised if they moved on for him. And you have Blake Coleman who actually had a really good season this past year. I think hit like 45ish points. He had a really solid season being a middle six goal scorer. So at that point I definitely think there’s going to be a lot of value on Coleman and I think if the asking price is right. I would not be one bit surprised if Calgary moved on from him. So we’ll have to wait and see on that. But moving Fabby backland or Coleman I think has to be top priority for Calgary. Second has to be either resign Dan Ladar or add a new backup to the team. The team needs a new backup. Wol’s definitely going to be a starter for a long time but they’re going to need a new goalender to be his backup. Ladar did quite well this year. Like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised if they resigned him. But if they don’t, they going to have to go on a free agency or via the trademark and try and get someone who can be his backup. Whether that be maybe taking on a bad contract like a group hour or a Jerry would be surprised if they try to do that or maybe go into free agency, get like a Jake Allen or something like that could also be an option there for the Calgary Flames. We’ll have to wait and see on that. But keep your eye on the Calgary Flames going after a goalie. The third thing has to be add a younger top four defenseman. I definitely think this team’s going to be adding some more players on the blue line. they could definitely use that especially given the fact the best players on the blue line are wear and after that really does drop off in the talent level. So I definitely think adding a young top 4D whether that be a guy like Keandre Miller New York Rangers organization, Mario Ferraro from San Jose or maybe a guy like Conor Murphy from Chicago or something like that I think could work out well for the Cowboy Flames. Fourth thing I think has to be use their draft capital add some younger players like we talked about they could view this team as almost playoff ready. So, if that’s true, I would not be one bit surprised if they used either the Devils or the Panthers first round pick to move it to try and get some more help immediately, whether that be adding another top nine forward or that top four defense like we were just talking about. So, using some of their draft capital to add younger players has to be another option there for the Flames. And the fifth and final thing I think they should do is add a top six forward. Like this team, I think if they move off a couple of pieces, they definitely use another top six forward. I’m not sure if they’ll go after the bigger names in free agency, whether that be Mner or Eers or Besser. I’m not sure if they’ll go after those type of guys, but we’ve heard them be into a guy like Sam Bennett. That would be an interesting ad there for the Flames. I could also see him trying to add some other pieces, too. So, we’re going to have to wait and see on that, but I think adding a top six forward would be a smart move there for Calgary. So, in my opinion, moving far backland or Coleman, resigning Var or adding another backup goalender, adding a young top four defenseman, using draft capital to trade for a younger piece, and adding a top six goals are five main ways I can see this team improving to get better and maybe the playoffs next year after missing for three straight seasons. Next, going over the Columbus Blue Jackets. So, going over the Columbus Blue Jackets, they also had a very fantastic season this past year. hit 40 wins, 33 regulation losses, nine overtime losses. They had 89 points. They were just a mere two points back in the Montreal Canadians for the last playoff spot. Almost went on a winning streak at the end of the season to make it in, but they just weren’t able to edge out the Montreal Canadians. But they did have a 40- win season. I think they got a lot closer to the playoffs than anyone was expecting entering this season. And they’ve put themselves on the map as a team who was a young up and cominging team who’s going to be challenging for a playoff spot for years to come. So I think the Jackets future is bright and even though they didn’t make the playoffs this year of 433 and9 records, nothing to scoff at. If you look at their goal scoring and point scoring leaders, their points scoring leaders, Zack Winsky was a point per game defenseman, having 82 points this year, which was a very fantastic feat there for Winski. Kenko put himself on as one of the more underrated players in the league by having a 74 point season. Marenko was a great ad for the Blue Jackets this year and looked fantastic. And then Shawn Monahan and Kent Johnson were tied for the team third spot in the point scoring category with 57 points. So this team had a lot of really good goal scorers. They had multiple 60point players. They had a couple of players hit the 50point plateau. Like this team had a lot of really good offensive weapons and there were a lot of good players who were able to put the puck in the net. Their goal scoring leaders were Kel Marenko and Anne Fentelli who both had 31. First time in a couple of years I think the Jackets have had 30 goal scores. Really good stuff there. Ken Johnson had 24 goals. He was third on the team in goal scoring. So very interesting stuff there. But this Jacket team, while it wasn’t overly fantastic, they have a couple of 30 goal scorers. Did have a couple of 60 plus point players, which is great there for the Blue Jackets. So interesting note there. If you look at their goal scoring, goals against power play, penalty kill stats. Goal scoring, this team was lethal. They were tied for seventh in the NHL in the regular season in goal scoring with 267 goals for. So scoring wise, this team was lethal. Goals against wise, another story. They had the same amount of goals let in as they had scored. They let in 267 goals, which was 25th in the NHL. So, they were a bottom eight team. And the goals against the Pon, which isn’t overly good. So, goal scoring wise, top 10, but goals against wise was bottom 10. So, definitely need to sort of even that out a little bit. But goal scoring wise, they were great. Power play, penalty kill were both not overly good. Power playwise, they had a 19.5% power play unit with a 22nd in the NHL. And penalty kill wise he has 77% penalty kill unit which was also 22nd in the NHL. So could have definitely been better on both sides of the power play and the penalty killwise as 20 seconds is not overly good and they definitely need to improve on their special teams tonight the playoffs next year. But still their goal scoring was great. Their goals against was not great and their power play and penalty kill definitely needs work. So interest note there. They currently have a projected $41.3 million in capsules for this upcoming season. So, they have a lot of money to spend in this year’s off season. If you look at the three reasons I think they missed. The first reason has to be terrible goalending. This team did not have great goalending this past year. Like we talked about goals against games wise, they were one of the worst teams in the NHL. A lot of that had to do with the fact that Mercleens and Terasov were not holding up there in the bargain and net. Mleakens I think is a sort of player who needs a fresh start. I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved off of him in the offseason. Terasov, I think, was just not ready for the backup role. Jack Grace was the main goalender who helped them win on that late season winning streak. But I definitely think that even if Gre is the backup next year, they’re going to need a new starter. So terrible goalending was the first reason. The second reason was injuries. Boon Jenner missed the first half, first three quarters of the season. Cole Cinger, Giger Chinoikov, and Sha Mahan also missed big chunks of time due to injuries. And there were a couple other guys who did miss shorter time. for this team, even though they weren’t as banged up as they were the past two seasons, which is a big reason why this team kept on missing the playoffs. And third was subpar special teams. This team was in the bomb 10 league in both the special teams on the power play and the penalty kill. So that was another major reason in my opinion as to why this Blue Jackets team wound up falling out of the playoffs instead of making it. So, in my opinion, three reasons this team is the playoffs were awful goalending, the injuries, the key guys, and the subpar special teams were three main reasons in my opinion why Jackets are out of the playoffs and not in the playoffs. So, those are the stats for this team. Those are the reasons I think they missed. Going over to their UFAs, their RFAS, and their draft capital. So, if you look at their UFAS for this upcoming season, they have quite a few of them. They have James Van Remake, Leank, Corali, Kunin, Danforth, Wansski, Provo, Fabro, and Johnson. Now, Jack Johnson had six assists in 41 games. I could see him be brought back maybe like a short-term deal. You have Fabro and Prov. Fabro, who had nine goals in 16 points in 68 games after being acquired off of waiverss. Provided had seven goals to 33 points in 82 games. Both were pretty decent top four, top six defenseman this past year. Would not be one bit surprised if the Jackets tried to sign either one of these guys. Also wouldn’t be overly surprised if these guys left via free for agency. Then you had Trey Fix Wansky who had no points in no NHL games. I could see him be brought back or see him leave. You also have Justin Danfor with nine goals and 21 points. Kunin who had 11 goals and 18 points and Cari who had six goals and 17 points. Lebank had two goals and 12 points and Van Remac had 16 goals and 35 points. All five of those guys were really solid bottom six guys. Van Remac were brought in in the off season. Corali has been a bomb six forward as well as Danforth for quite a bit there and Kun was acquired at the trade deadline. I would not be surprised if two or three of these guys were brought back on like two three-year deals on the lower end of the AAV spectrum, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a couple of those guys did leave too. So maybe half those guys get brought back, half those guys leave. So we’ll have to wait and see on that. But those are all their UFAS for this upcoming season. If look at their RFAS, they have Veronov, Fitia, Harris, Hunt, Holm, and Terasoft. Terasov had 7102 record with a 3.54 GA and 881 save percentage. Like we said, he could have done better this year, but he was a decent backup goalender. So, I could definitely see the Jackets bring him back. Ber Cole and Dre and Hunts both did not play this year at the NHL level, but both are really good prospect defenseman. So, I could definitely see both those guys be brought back. Harris had five points in 33 games as a defenseman. Solid third pair of guys, so I could definitely see him be brought back. Wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t qualify him. You also have Fitia who had four goals and seven points in 47 games for the Jackets. Decent bomb six guy. could definitely see him be brought back in like a one to twoear short-term deal. And then their big RFA is Veronov. Veronov had 22 goals and 46 points in 71 games this year. He’s shown he can be a really lethal goal scorer. So I definitely think he’ll be brought back in like a 3 to four year deal, maybe like three or four million. Like I definitely think Veronov’s going to be back. So some interesting RFAS for this team headlined by Terasov Harris and Veronov. But some interesting ones I think the Jackets will wind up signing. Next one over to the team’s draft capital for his upcoming off seasonason. If you look at their draft capital, they currently have the same amount of picks that the Cali Flames have for this upcoming offseason. At this point in time, once again, there’s a possibility it could change, but at this point in time, the Jackets have seven picks for this upcoming draft. They currently have two first round picks. That’s the Jackets and the Wilds. They have no second. They have their own third and fourth. They have no fifth. They have their own sixth, their own seventh, and the ninth seventh. So they have all of their own picks except for in the fifth and the second round and they have an extra first and extra seventh round picks. So they do have seven picks. They do still have two first round picks. Those are going to be two mid round picks. So they’re not going to be overly high, but they’re going to be a decent amount there. So interesting note there. But the Jackets do have seven picks for this upcoming draft, but only three in the first three rounds. So interesting to note there. And lastly to five ways I can see his Jackets team improve in the offseason to get better for next year. So, in my opinion, it starts with either moving or buying out Elvis Mleakans and adding a starting level goalender. Merleakans was not where he needed to be this year. I mean, he was a decent goalender and put up some decent numbers, but was not enough to get the Jackets into the postseason. So, I definitely think the Jackets team will explore maybe other Bruce to try and get a starter. I think guys like Breeze and Terasoft can fight for backup roles. But I think whether it’s moving Mercleens with some retain money or just buying out Mercans entirely. I definitely think the Jackets are very likely going to walk away from MS Leakans and try and add a starter whether that be Demco, Pekka, Lucin, Gibson or someone else. I definitely think the Jackets are going to goalie hunting this year and try and add a starter. So that’s the first thing. The second thing has to be either keep Ivan Prov or add another top for the fence. Provo was brought in. I think it was two years ago after his relationship with the Flyers soured. Uh the Flyers got really good haul for it. He actually done quite well in Columbus. So either they have to try and keep him around in Columbus or if they don’t keep him around, they have to add top for the fence cuz I definitely think this team could definitely use a boost on the defensive side. So either keeping Proverbs or adding a top for the Fenc has to be priority number two. Priority number three has to be let more of their younger players play. They did so this year. Veronov, Chinoikov, Marchenko, Fantily, the list goes on and on. They had a lot of younger players this year, but I think they need to continue it to keep on going. They need guys like Damon Hunt on the defensive end as well as Dentime. And on the forward group, guys like Fitia and Del Boo were some of their top prospects in their system. I think should definitely get opportunities to be at the NHL level this year. Once again, this is more of a training camp thing, but I definitely think that has to be another one of their priorities. Fourth thing for this team has to be consider moving one of their first round picks. They have their own first round pick. They have the Wild’s first round pick. Those are going to be around the 20 mark in the draft selection order. So, with that in mind, I definitely wouldn’t be surprised if the Jackets move one of those first round picks to get some upgrades elsewhere. I definitely think this team is going to be trying to get some major improvements. So, I would not be one bit surprised if they consider moving their first round pick or the Wild’s first round pick. That’s priority number four. And priority number five has to be adding some defensive depth. Like I said, this team was not very great defensively this year. And I definitely think if they added a couple of experienced bomb pair defenseman that might make some sense for the Blue Jacket, especially if guys like Johnson or Fabore to Leaves. So not exactly sure who they could try and target, but whether moving like a lower end draft pick for someone who’s already under contract or going on free for agency, maybe signing one to two guys on like lower end deals, not exactly sure which route they will go, but I definitely do think adding some defensive depths would be a smart move there for the Jackets. So, in my opinion, moving or buying out Mer Leakans, adding a new starter, keeping proving a top four defenseman, letting some of the younger players play, considering moving one of their first round picks, and adding some defensive depths are five ways I can see this jackets team improving in the offseason this year to end their what is it now six or sevenyear playoff drought and finally make it back to the playoffs next year for the first time in a long time. So, definitely that’s my opinion on the Blue Jackets and the Flames. That’s what I think these two teams need to do in the off season. Do you agree with me? Do you think that those are some moves that this teams could try and improve in the offseason? Are you surprised these two teams missed the playoffs? And are any of the stats a little bit surprising to you? And you will face in our face. Do you think these two teams will keep or move on from? Definitely let your thoughts on all that down in the comment section below. That’s all I have for today. Remember to like this video and remember to subscribe below.
