NAHA 2025 Dunlap Cup Playoffs West QF G2 – Kansas City Spirit @ San Diego Riptide (SDG leads 1-0)
[Applause] This city’s been buzzing all day. It’s time to finally see what’s up. Don’t you just love playoff hockey? Listen to this place. Let’s get after it. Here’s a chance in front. He scores. What an opportunity it delivers. You know what amazes me, James? The the ability to pull that shot off, get it into the feet quickly, but the accuracy. So, you’re quick with the release, but you find the back of the net with pinpoint precision. [Music] The Spirit have come to play tonight. Wow, what a quick strike. Right from opening puck drop, he just knew that they had jump and they had their legs underneath them. They’re attacking the net and they’re rewarded with that first goal. Great reach with the poke check. Grabbed along the board by Glee. Takes the bank feed. Rib time. He’s got the puck along the wall. Kansas City’s got it in the neutral zone. Scandalis taking it from his own end. Directs it on over to Bor. Passes it over. Penalty coming up here. trailing by one and you take a penalty. Not the way to get back in the game. [Music] Kansas City’s man advantage unit will take to the ice for the first time tonight. First power play opportunity of the game. You know, they’ve worked on this in practice. The setup, the look that they want. Let’s see how they move the puck around the perimeter and look to attack. Kansas City’s looking to break out of their own end. Now a quick pass to Angle. Oh, he blocked them. Some players get into the game by physically engaging early. There’s a fine line there, but that was executed perfectly. Kansas City’s moving it into the offensive end. Jos for the puck, but still maintains possession. And now it’s grabbed by Kind. And that’s broken out. And it’s a quick pass to Aane. My goodness, the pressure really building here in the offensive end. And they go the other way as they clear the zone. Here’s a shot. Oh, close save and a [Music] beauty. Lots of time left in this period. Kansas City’s up one zip. And there’s a little help from your friends right there from off the wing. Coming up with the puck. Pushes it across to Buork. Left sav by Jones and the puck stopper jumps on top of it to get a stoppage in play. Still lots of time left in the period. We’ve got a one- nothing hockey game thus far. Later won the faceoff here in the offensive zone and it’s deflected off someone in front. Jones has the puck and holds on for a whistle. Kansas City’s high activity in the offensive zone has resulted in them leading here midway through the first. Later got it. Now they’ll look to see what they can do with it offensively. A shot. Too many bodies in the lane. Nice third entry from the middle. Caught club save and he handles it with [Applause] ease. Both teams ready here for the face off. Kansas City’s won the defensive zone. They tied it up and we well working hard sticking to the game plan with good habits and they’re back to he does a great job of getting to position net front James and then with a quick flick of the wrist he buries it. The Caris won the draw center right to the front. Oh, I thought he was going to be beaten and he somehow got a piece of that. Kansas City’s got the puck. Scooped up along the wall by Lo’s tripped up and the officials hand is in the air signaling penalty and there’s the whistle stopping the play. And coach is looking for an explanation here from the official. Yeah, I mean, he’s getting the refs here because he wants to know why his team is being penalized more often and it’s clearly having a factor in the game. [Music] [Applause] Kansas City’s got another opportunity here on the man advantage. They haven’t scored yet in the game on the power play, but no need to get frustrated. They all bring a different skill set. It’s the reason why they’re out there. Kansas City’s got it and they’re on the attack. Slides it across, shuts him down. And there’s another penalty call against the home team. These fans are frustrated, you know. I think these calls are legit. I just think that the fans are wondering what about the other side here. Well, yeah, they got to be expecting to get one soon here as it is one-sided. It’s so hard for a team to get into the game when there’s no flow because you keep braiding yourself to the box. Centers collide into the faceoff dot and a huge five on three power play looms. With all this time on the five on three, yes, you can be more patient, but you don’t want to get low to sleep on the outside. You have to move the coverage a little bit outside of the middle of the ice to be able to open up those lanes and execute. Here’s the chance. And he makes the save. Trying to get the puck out of his own end. And manages to clear the zone. Quick pass over to Chris Wolo. Pass it up ahead. Kind’s penalty has expired, but they remain short-handed as he joins the kill. Kansas City’s got possession here in the offensive zone. Score remains tied after the power play fails to deliver. Well, I really like this PK unit, James. Just working in sync, almost as if they’re on a pendulum or a string together, knowing exactly what the other is going to do. And a reason they’re still tied. Oh, look at this. The Spirit have the puck in the defensive zone. Kansas City’s looking to break out. Battling for the puck but still hangs on. Centering feed and he shuts down. A great scoring chance there. And that one’s picked off. Quick feed to Aan and he takes the feed. Some solid defensive work in their own end with the poke check. San Diego’s got the puck in the defensive end. Moves inside. Oh, what a save in front. Been consistent over the course of his career, mainly because of his positioning, James. He gets set to that puck square to it and makes the save. Goender covers it up. We get a whistle to slow things down. Well past the midway mark of this period. You can feel the energy in this crowd. It’s a tie game. San Diego’s got the puck after winning the defensive zone faceoff. Scrum on the boards as they battle for the puck. The Spirit have taken possession along the wall. Can’t stay on his feet after that hit. Picked off by Wletting. Jones hangs on to the puck to stop the play. Faceoff looming as both centers get into position. Kansas City’s won the draw. Now, let’s see what they can do with it. Hammers it on net. There’s the whistle as the puck stopper likes to hang on. [Applause] Roberts won the draw here in their own zone. York’s moving the puck through his own zone. Broken up with the stick in the defensive end. Turned aside with the glove by Crossley in front of the net. The goalender covers up for a whistle on the play. Late going of this period. We are all tied up in this one. [Music] Kansas City’s taken possession in their own end. gains the zone through center. Takes a shot. Stops that one. Slides it over with pace to Buork. Kansas City’s got the puck inside the defensive zone. Valance got it against the boards. Oh, what a stop. King Ducks lugging the puck. Levels him with a hit. handles the puck. Shakes off the defender with some nifty moves. Oh, he got a little sliver of it and it stays out. Sends it quickly to Mayo. Good blast. Gets in front of the shot. Kansas City’s got a hold of the puck. Handles the pass on the right wing. Moette and some textbook body contact there. Kansas City’s got control of it now from their own end. Quick pass to Bork and now he moves it quickly to Luck. Fires to the paint wide to the net. There’s so many moving parts in the game of hockey which is why it’s one of the most difficult sports in the world. And he gets to that prime time scoring area. You don’t get that too often. And he just sails it and misses the net. Here’s a shot. Oh, he made it to make that save with time winding down. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Both teams getting a good sweat on after this first period. We’ve got lots more in store and we’re coming back with a clean sheet of ice next. your tickets from tonight’s game and receive up to 10% off at Bunsville Burgers Family [Music] [Applause] Restaurant. A clean sheet of ice beckons and period number two set to get underway. A tightly contested 20 minutes to start. Let’s see if this continues here in the second. Well, Charlotte, we got 20 minutes under our belts in this one. How do you sum up the performance? Jones has been amazing in this game so far, James, and really the only reason this game is tied. His team in front of him needs to find a way to generate some offense, but also to protect him in front of the net. Moves it quickly over to Gier. Kansas City’s got the puck on their own end. Taken by Buork. Puck picked up by Buork. And they continue to fight for that puck along the wall. Picked up along the boards by Buork. Shakes off the coverage. Back to the blue line. Oh, what a stop on the play. Gets all of it with the paddle. Puck scooped up by Scandella. Sends a pass over. San Diego’s gained possession along the boards and he slides it quickly to Gany. San Diego’s got it in their own zone. Look at this. They’ve got some bodies here on the attack. Good solid check and he loses control of it. Slides the puck to Chris Guolo. Cuts to the front. Still keeps a hold of it and he slides it quickly to Aan. And that carries off a stick, feeds the puck to Podenski. And now he tries to get it across to Rober. It’s a contact sport, people. There’s proof right there. And now it’s over to Gabardella. And that’s knocked away. And he loses control here. Now a quick pass to Kind. Here’s a chance. Oh, I thought he had it. What a chance there. Oh, James. thought he connected on that one. He’s going to be disappointed, but he’s all around the net. San Diego’s got a hold of the puck now. Moves it on over to Kind. Good defensive effort to poke it away. Tried to put it in the side and missed. Well, there’s a recognition that he didn’t have much room. Gets a little bit fine and just misses wide. Taken along the wall by Low. Rib Tides got it in their own zone. San Diego’s caught the puck against the boards. Easy save by Frostnik. Picked up along the wall by Matau now over to Belot. Kansas City’s got it against the boards. Takes the feed at the court. Misses. Think he had more time than he thought he had, James. And he’s in perfect scoring area and he just sends it wide. That might have been over rotation. Frostnik’s going to hang on for a whistle. Plenty of playing time left in this frame. We got a tie game. Puck has dropped. He wins the draw here in the defensive zone. San Diego’s got a hold of it along the wall. Skates to the crease. That’s glove by cross. Reaction time is so critical for goalenders because the way the players shoot in this game today, man, it is so tough to stop. So this one instance club goes up, makes the save past the halfway mark of this period and it’s all tied [Music] up. Angles won the draw in his own end now. Let’s see if they can clear it. There’s the whistle. Icing the call. Big face off looming. [Music] Some last second communication before both teams get ready to drop the puck here. Offensive zone face off and he wins the draw. Puck possession right off the draw. James against a very tired group who just iced the puck leads to an opportunity. Quick feed to Scandela. Fires it and that’s broken up. San Diego’s got possession of the puck. Locks him on the play. Moves the puck along the half wall. Scores. And we take a drive to Clutch City as they take the lead. Well, the lead is in their hands. And now it’s about building off of that. Good shift management dictating pace, controlling the offensive zone. Everything now is on the line. RIP’s got to find a way to build off this onegoal lead now here, Cheryl, in the back half of period number two. Well, it’s essential that they do and they can’t be comfortable with this lead because they haven’t been strong the entire game. They haven’t managed the puck and they certainly haven’t held possession. So, they got to find a way to attack on their toes and put their opponent on their heels. Kansas City’s been the busier team offensively with way more shots on goal, but they still trail in the second. Play resumes here as he wins the draw inside the offensive zone. Takes the bump, but still hangs on to the puck. Grabbed along the boards by Luck. Great pressure on the offensive end by Lera. Battle along the boards. Puck grabbed by L. James off a stick and they can’t complete the play and that’s knocked away in the defensive end by Aen. Stooped up along the wall by Robert. Here’s a short pass to Baw. Oh, just wide. Sometimes when you have the puck on your stick in a prime time scoring area, it’s not about threading the needle. And when you try and thread it, sometimes you miss. And that’s what happened there. Comes up with a stop. There’s another stop. Love the way the goalender gets tight to the shooter here. The puck’s in the low slot. You want to take away time, you want to take space. Goender does it. Makes a save. Here in the back half of this period, San Diego’s got the momentum with a onegoal lead. They’d love to add to that. Oh, what a save. Oh, that doesn’t swing momentum in your favor. I don’t know what will, James. That’s a last ditch effort to make a play. What a beautiful save. Frost’s going to give everyone a chance to breathe and hang on to the puck here in the later stages of this period. Rip Tides got a slim lead. They lead it 2-1. The Frozen Biscuits dropped and we are back underway here. Gaining speed through center and here they come on the attack. Fires it on net. Scooped into the trapper by Jones. I’m not sure how he kept up to that shot. Right from the slot area, James, but man, he flashed the leather. He made the save. No rebound to boot. Kansas City’s goal scorers need to find a way to finish on some of these chances as they continue to trail here late in this middle frame. Moves the puck into the attacking area. Bleeds the victim of a slash and the official contact. We got a penalty coming up. Number 11 stick work will land him two minutes for slashing. [Applause] and a man advantage unit comes out to go to work. An opportunity on their first power play of the game, James. And this is an opportunity to look at the coverage as well. See how they’re playing it, whether they’re going to be aggressive or sit back. James keep a hold of the puck after that play from their own end trying to kickstart this power play. Well, James, this power play has not been effective at all. And you can see they’re 200 ft from the zone. They have to find a way to have some urgency, gain some speed through the neutral zone so they can get in and get set up. Kansas City’s penalty killers get a hold of him and the puck leaves the zone. Time running out on this power play. They’ve got one last chance here. Man advantage is up. both teams back to even strength. You can have all the ozone possession time on a power play in the world and you don’t convert. Why? Because that’s where you have it on the outside. You have to find ways to create these diagonal lines to the net, be able to shoot off the pass and get scoring [Applause] [Music] opportunities. Just here in the late stages of this, it’s 2 Approaching the final 60 seconds here in the second got the puck and he’s going to hang on. Teams are ready for the draw. The linesman about to drop the puck. Kansas City’s got a hold of the puck. They try to maintain possession inside the defensive zone. it on left. Denise him. He got all of it. Play is told for offside. Kansas City’s had plenty of good looks offensively, but they have been snaping as they trail late in the second period. Chris Coro’s one possession. Nice feed at center. Moves up ahead now. Oh, how did he get a glove on that? What a stop by Jones. [Applause] Gany has won the draw inside his own end. Scores just before the period closes. Cheryl, absolutely huge. The last few minutes of a period are essential. And they go to the dressing room with needed momentum. You never want to see yourself on that screen in the video room on a goal, James. There’s been a defensive error and then you get caught covering up and everyone gets caught out of position. As a result, it’s in the back of your net. Kansas City’s offensive pressure has resulted in an equalizer here tonight. As an athlete, you always know the end of the period is critical timing. You want to maintain pressure and you want to gain momentum heading into the third. Back did just that. And there’s the horn bringing an end to period number two. Still 20 minutes more of action in the third. Stick around. 40 minutes in the books. Big third period coming up for both teams and we’re ready to go. We are underway here in the third and this could come down to next goal wins. Moves around along the half wall. Angles it over to lead. San Diego’s looking to break out and somehow he hangs on. Passes it to Gier. Gains the zone from the right. Broken up by Mayo. The Spirit have possession along the boards. Can’t hang on after that hit along the half wall with the P. Oh, how did he get a piece of that? Moves it to Orlando transferred in front. Picked up along the board by and play continues as that goes off the glove coming down the left wing and into the zone. He grabs the puck here on the point. Here’s a pass to the middle. Oh, and they couldn’t complete that. Paganski stick handling in his own zone. San Diego’s got the puck against the half wall. Oh, he didn’t get all of it, but just enough to keep it out of the net. Looking to set up offensively. Quick shot. That’s gloved by Jones. [Applause] We’re still in the early stages of this period. The next goal could be a big one as we are tied. San Diego’s won the face off deep in their own end. Play whistle dead. Penalty coming up. Chris Paulo’s going off for interference. [Applause] San Diego’s power play unit puts their hard hats on as they go back to work. They haven’t scored on their power play yet. They’ve earned this opportunity. They’ll get another look at it. Looking for different adjustments to be made. And a successful clearing attempt. Solid body contact shot scores. A power play call puts them in front. Well, and this was a huge opportunity that they took advantage of, James. They were urgent on the puck, but they also showed poise and patience. Well, certainly he looks frustrated after letting that go in. James, it’s almost like a fielder in baseball. If you touch it, you should be able to stop it. And then he gets a big chunk of that one. Unfortunately, it goes in the netting. Well, every team spends so much time on their power play, the sequences, the options, and they deliver on this set with a goal, and the coach is absolutely thrilled behind the bench as they approach. The feedback is there. It’s all positive. San Diego’s gone up by one here in period number three. Well, you know that they recognize that they’ve got the lead in the third period, so they have to be defensively responsible. But you can’t just sit back and protect. You got to be aggressive when you got the moment. and take advantage of it. Kansas City’s got a hold of it against the wall. Cross save was so impressive, James. Really a last ditch effort to find the puck. When you out battle, when you outwill your opponent, everyone around you gets energized. Just look at the bench. Everyone is elevated because of that save. Oh, and he lays a thunderous pit there. [Applause] Still lots of time left in the period. Rib Tide’s been the better looking team over the last few minutes. They’d love to build on this one-goal lead. Moves it to the middle and he denies that great opportunity there. Kansas City’s been the better team tonight in my opinion, but still they trail here in the third period despite having the advantage in shots. Clock has dropped and we are back underway. Quick pass to Paganski. Carries it into the offensive end up the middle. Grabs it with the glove. We’ll get a face off after the puck stays covered up. And the centers glide towards the dot here as we got a face off set to [Music] [Applause] go. Chris Quo’s quick stick off the draw wins possession. Kansas City’s through center in the offensive end and that’s blocked away. San Diego’s got the puck along the boards. scores and we are tied. New game here, partner. Oh yeah, it’s a new game, James. But I really like the push back to get the equalizer. Now it’s what they do with that momentum. This next shift, it’s critical. I think he makes a really good read here, James. He anticipates the play well and gets himself square to the shooter. But unfortunately, this one hits him and he seems to be a little leaky cuz it finds it way to the back of the net. [Music] The Spirit have evened things up with their effort here in the third show. I like it. Yeah, I like it, too. They’ve been the better team all night. What I really like about it, they didn’t get frustrated. They just stuck with the game plan, continued to possess the puck and finally put it in. Knocked off the puck. And the play continues. The Spirit have gained possession off the wall. moves it quickly over to Bishop. Stones him in front. In the game of hockey, you know that your opponent is told to attack and drive the net and really get in the eyes of the tender. And for the goalender, it’s really important when there’s a lot of traffic in front to make sure they have their eyes. So, it’s out battling, outworking your opponent for those sight lines. He does an impressive job of making that save. Scoops up the puck now. Kansas City’s across the blue line looking to make something happen along the boards. Scores off the post and in a real sneaky one that fooled the goalender James. Not much room available, but that one perfectly executed. [Applause] Wouldn’t it be pretty if this was a set shot? Just aim for the inside of the post and know that it’s going to go in. That’s not typically the case, but tonight it is. Kansas City’s got to know that this game is not over just yet with lots of playing time left in this third period. But they do, Cheryl, have the envoy position of having the lead. Well, they’ve got the lead now. They’re playing in front. But they got to do a lot more of what they’ve already done, James, and that’s hold on to the puck, manage it, don’t give it up easily, make good blue line decisions, and they should be fine. Looking to make something happen in the offensive zone. Blocked in traffic. Jones keeps it for the whistle. And I’ll tell you what, this team would be lost without his performance tonight. He’s been incredible, James. I mean, so dynamic between the pipes and really the only reason his team’s still in this game. More than half the frame has been played here. Kansas City’s got a one-goal lead. Both sides digging in for that puckle on the wall and he can’t hang on after that hit in front. Scores and they’re cooking now. The opponent has no answer for them right now because they’re relentless on the puck. They’ve garnered some momentum after multiple backto back goals. James chains. They don’t want to leave any breathing room and let their opponent get some life back. [Music] [Music] with that last goal. You can certainly tell that the coach is not impressed. His team did not start ready and certainly been struggling throughout this game. Now down by a few. Kansas City’s got to feel pretty good about where they’re at now here in this third period. Cheryl, I’ve liked their game this entire game, James. Right from the puck drop, they’ve been aggressive on the puck and they can’t change it now. They just got to continue to finish the way they started. Got the puck. Mayo’s got it in the defensive end [Music] and he keeps possession. Joel for the puck and it’s knocked away. San Diego’s got it behind the net. Moves the puck. takes the feed with the glove by Rosnik. Kansas City’s been going in one direction all night long and that’s to the net and they lead it in this third. And from off the wing he comes up with it with both centers scrummed up. Seuss plays it into the offensive zone from the point. They take control of it. Oh, and there’s a great save by Jones. Rebound control is critical in the game of hockey. Putting it to the corner and now the offensive player has to hound the puck. Gets the puck in deep. Ribs got the puck along the wall. Taking it from his own end. Oh, look at this chance. Oh, big tire save. Big tire stop there. What a sequence. I mean, he has been outstanding making consecutive saves. I mean, his defense, they got to start playing. A lot on the line here in this offensive zone faceoff. San Diego’s won the draw and they’ll go to work. Quick feed to Panski. Kansas City’s got the puck into the attacking end and now it’s grabbed by Cukin. Oh, excellent use of the stick as he knocks that one away into the attacking area from the left side. Kansas City’s looking to break out of their own end. Puck battle along the boards. Taken along the wall by Aen. Keartella’s got the puck in his own zone. San Diego’s got control of it now from their own end. Here’s a short pass to Chris. Good job. And it’s a quick pass to Scandela. Taken by Sheller. Slides the puck to Swezy from the left side. Takes it to center. The pass in front. Great defensive heads up play to pick it off. Takes the pass from the left wing. Good use of the body to knock him off the puck. Takes the feet at the back end. Oh, and somehow he gets a sliver of it and keeps it up. in. He scores. Gets his own rebound and makes it count. This is what you call having a nose for the net. You take the initial shot and you get back to the front of the net for your own rebound. That’s a great tenacious goal. Kansas City’s playing almost like they want a day off here tomorrow, Cheryl. Yeah, I’d say so. And you always look forward to a day off and this coaching staff has got to be impressed with this team tonight. You know, the ability to get the puck to net, driving, the pace of play, just having really great habits, consistent effort right on the play as the goender covers things up. Kansas City’s up big time here in the late stages of this third period. Under a minute to go in the third. takes a bump and loses control of the puck. Denies him in close. Oh, what a save there, James. I mean, that situational awareness at its finest, knowing exactly where the threat is in that low slot and taking all the space away. And the puck’s knocked loose. And now it is grabbed by Buork and he slides it quickly to lead. Enters the offensive zone from the left. Look at that. It’s in. He scores. [Music] You see players working from this area all the time in practice. A quick snapshot goalie can’t get set to position in time and it winds up in the back of the net. [Applause] Riptide’s got one back, but Cheryl, they need more. They need more and they’re going to have to pay the price to get to the paint. The most coveted spot on the ice, fight through traffic and find a way to get the puck to the net. Broken up with the stick at the defensive end inside the offensive zone. They score and it’s back to backs. Yeah, they’ve been chopping out the bit. Now they’ve got their opponent on their heels. They need a quick change here and find a way to continue the momentum. This is just a sweet set of hands and a fabulous deep to get the goalender out of position and then slide it in right by the post. I love the response of the coach. His reaction says it all after that goal. Listen, they were down big, but they clawed their way back into this one. Kansas City’s not far from the finish line here as they lead it late in this third. Gany won the draw at center with possession along the wall. Puts it on net and the goalender comes up with a piece of it to keep it out of the net. Here’s a shot and he hits one of his own teammates with that shot. scribble along the boards as they battle for the pop. He’ll flick it away. Nice defensive use of the stick there. And that’ll close the book on this as the final horn sounds. Well, after one team jumps out to the early one- nothing lead, there was the counter punch that we expected tonight to even the series. Joe, I think we’re getting a little bit of a snapshot as what the series is going to look like, James. And you know, you get down one and you know that you’ve got to claw your way back in. You got to split because if you go down two, that’s way too much momentum and runway for your opponent. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
