Broadcaster Roundtable: It’s Tocchet Time in Philly
The Broadcaster Roundtable reconvenes with Tim Saunders, Jim Jackson, Brian Smith and Jason Myrtetus as the crew discusses the hiring of Rick Tocchet as the new Flyers head coach.
I'm excited for this season! I think there's been some nice moves… a couple of smart free agent signings this summer might make the flyers make that jump into the playoffs!
Tortorella was an awful hire from Day 1. He's a 65 year-old child who craves the cameras and spotlight. Worst of all, it was apparent a year ago players like Tippett, York, Farabee, etc. weren't being developed properly. I thought he'd get canned after their disastrous finish in '24 but he got another year to do more damage. What matters from today forward is drafting properly and developing young talent. The #6 pick needs to be an elite player. From there, focus on defense and building a reliable blueline.
This is all very well and good! But let’s stop focusing so much on the culture in the locker room and focus on getting better talent on the ice. All we have is a good third and fourth line players we need top 6 guys to be competitive again. Coaching wasn’t a problem here.
If he can help Tippett play to his talent level, have Drysdale take the next step and rebuild the back end with some new talent (sorry, but Zamula ain’t got “it”) we make the playoffs. Wait, did I not say GOALIE?!
Hoping Matthew Schafer somehow drops to us at 6 lol this team needs a center of course but man when is the last time this team had a clear number 1 defenseman who we drafted and developed? Last time we had a huge difference maker on D was probably Pronger who we obviously traded for
Whatever everyone may think, I LOVE that the Flyers are going back to their roots and getting former players involved in getting this team to where it belongs. Love the management group we have, and looking forward to seeing where they all take our Flyers. I don't think they'll add much, if anything. I think they are trying to get the kids up here to play, see where they are, and see if they are coachable.
Let’s go Flyboys! I’m a gen x Flyers fan. I wanted to bring up something that some people might think is crazy but, I miss the old Flyers chant! I can actually remember the time when the Flyers fans changed the chant and started doing the boring mono Rangers chant. It made me sad. The Flyers had a chant of their own. It was powerful and unique. It went, LETS GO FLYERS and the ERS in Flyers went up an octave, and followed with DANT, DANT, DANT, DANT, DANT ! And now it’s the rangers chant throughout the league. We need OUR chant back! I know I sound nuts lol
