We had our first team advance to the Conference Final as the Edmonton Oilers eliminated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. That’s where Jason and Frank started today on a new episode of The DFO Rundown.
It’s the third Western Conference Final in four years for Connor McDavid and company, and this one seems like the most unexpected of the bunch. The guys broke down the decisive series win and the Oilers’ chances going forward before getting to the other series.
Out East, the Maple Leafs got steamrolled by the Florida Panthers in Game 5 of their series. It was another pivotal moment in the history of this Leafs core and Frank explained why this loss tells us a lot about Toronto’s stars.
They then pivoted and talked about the two new coaching hires in the NHL as the Philadelphia Flyers landed their guy in Rick Tocchet and the Vancouver Canucks filled their vacancy and elevated Adam Foote to the Head Coaching position. Gregor asked the question of which new coach is in a better position going forward.
Frank also gave an update on some other coaching vacancies and the candidates to fill them.
Tyler then popped in with a new edition of Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about Frank’s Top 50 free agent list, Ken Holland’s shopping list in Los Angeles and the other two series going on in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
To wrap, they talked a little bit more about Frank’s list and gave their takes on the two elimination games that are going on tonight with the Canes having the Caps on the ropes and the Jets fighting for their lives against the Stars.

Why does everybody’s evaluation of this team start with last years team? The oilers sure are not doing that. They are taking it a game at a time and knobby is making brilliant adjustments, they can play any style and just win. The depth is there. Goals from everywhere. Do they look slow? Yes they lost some youth but wasn’t the mantra experience matters in playoffs? Talk about Dallas’s depth all you want. Good deep team sure. You’ll see. And then everybody can talk about last year and go through the same bs when they meet Florida with home ice advantage.

Won 6-1, in Toronto, shut them out for 59 minutes, continuous non stop pressure and hitting even when they were up 4-0, only allowed 1 power play all game, and has Toronto fans throwing their own players jersey on the ice because they’ve shut them down….

It's a feedback loop. Media hype teams from big markets, because that's where the money and bulk of the media voices are. i.e. Frank is just repeating what he hears, he can't assess a team on his own.

The Oilers are dazed and confused and have little to zero ideas of how the heel they managed to make it thus far…..the truth is that we watched 2 highly regarded NHL Teams go down without a fight….when you watched the Kings and LVK and Oilers in the handshake lineups at Series end there were no stitches or torn britches…..it looked like guys shaking hands after a mid-season Practice….. the Oilers are a slower older and weaker Team this year and no one focused on exploiting those things …YET…. everybody played River Hockey with them…..I dont think we will see that happen again.I predict the Oilers miss the Finals and they have a major re-set next year with explosive Trades.

EDM is slower on paper, but only on paper, which doesn't matter because the games are played on the ice. Its not valid to say they are older and slower than last year when the only place that shows is on paper. They are benefiting from their experience and speed hasn't been an issue at all.
