i think people call the canes boring because when they play against carolina, their team sucks and can't play like they normally can. canes have the better defense so theres less exciting scoring chances.
To me, this is analogous to Michael Jordan having to finally get past the Pistons to reach the NBA finals. The Hurricanes need to get over this "hump" to be the Stanley Cup winners. I think this will happen. This team has the mental strength to get through the Panthers. As long as Freddie keeps doing what he's doing, the Hurricanes will win. I think having home ice advantage is important.
