They can contend if Sorokin stays healthy and plays at a very high level.
The problem is In my opinion, yes the islanders are the same team that went to the conference finals twice BUT most other teams aren’t, they’ve gotten better.
In a less than stellar year(21-22) the NY Islanders still managed to finish, 5th in the league on the PK, 7th in the league in overall defense, 9th in the league in overall goaltending, those numbers would make them a solid contender for the playoffs except for being 23rd in the league in scoring overall. It is also high time for Islander fans to stop waxing romantically about Nick Leddy, in the five full seasons he played for the Islanders, Leddy put up 191 points and still managed to be a minus 36 overall. Did he move the puck…yes….did forwards go around him like he was invisible…absolutely. Time to move on!
I think romanov with a dedicated roll and the isles defensive structure will really show how good he is. I think the biggest question mark is Laine Lambert for me. We knew what we were getting with trotz.
How do you measure a team that is system based, relies on grit/hunger and some puck luck in the preseason? This team is so hard to speculate. We made it further than a lot of teams who appear far better. Legit #2-3 one moment, last place next moment. 🤷♂️
My fear is the goalie performance is (too) system based. If the team, as a whole, becomes more offense oriented, the Isles will be easier to score on. Look at the Rangers. A top offense and the best regular season goalie in the league, but even he couldn't stop enough pucks to go all the way.
My biggest concern is how poorly they played the entire year against winning teams. The Pulock injury, covid, road trip all hurt, but that doesn't explain or excuse why they could almost never beat a playoff team(aside from the Rangers). The numbers are pretty disturbing
absolutely not. until the forwards are re-vamped with two top six upgrades isles are a fringe playoff contender. nothing else. too many east teams behind them are younger, more skilled, and getting better as isles stagnate. and too uneven of a team. their d and goaltending-more than adequate. their forward group-subpar. one can only dream of tarasenko or matt t…… probably just waiting on kadri now that av's can't meet his price and call it an off-season with lou proclaiming this roster is good enough to contend. tired of this 2.7 gpg. 27th in gf every season. gotta get to a 3 gpg avg. trade beau 12 goal scorer too inconsistent to get an upgrade. trade wahlstorm another 12 goal scorer too before he has no value. isles fans think he is the sniper they need. yet his flaws are too obvious to prevent that. and dumping bailey is obvious. not gonna happen yet, no one will take two years $10 mill. right now.
