Marchand hit from behind on Tanev – Tough Call Review

Marchand hit from behind on Tanev – Tough Call Review

Here’s the hit from behind by Brad Marian on Chris Tanv in the middle of the slot. But what are you going to call it? This is where the NHL rule book needs a major update. Rule 43, checking from behind. There is no provision for a minor penalty for checking from behind. So, it would have to be a major or a match, which both come with an automatic game misconduct. Now, this check is definitely from behind, and Tanv has no idea the hit is coming, so he’s unable to protect or defend himself. But Marchant doesn’t launch into it really or leave his feet or do anything significant to increase force. He just glides through his back with a lot of speed, which creates some force, but there’s nothing there that would suggest, I don’t think, a major penalty or a match penalty. If it was by the boards, yes, absolutely. But in open ice, I don’t think there’s enough for a major here. So, until they adjust the rule book, this is all we have to go on. And these hits are perfectly legal.

Brad Marchand hit Chris Tanev from behind in open ice. There was no call on the play, and there’s really nothing much they can call.

  1. how’d u choose this instead of the domi on barkov hit???? for all the leafs fans in the comments this shit goes both ways all the time so calm tf down😂

  2. I'm not sure to understand how this is not a clear penalty ?
Following what's written here, seems pretty clear that it was a Major Penalty

Is the only argument : "it's not really deserving a major penalty, and the book says that a check from behind can't be a 2min minor, so we don't put any penalty" ?
If so that's flat out dumb

And by looking at it, having someone charging at full speed and cross checking your back (even if they don't "launch into it") should be an easy call for a penalty.
+ in this example, Marchand legit came off both his feet, he maybe "don't launch into it" but mainly because he didn't need to considering the speed he was coming at…

  3. Marchand obvsiouly knows this loophole in the rules from his history of duochebaggery so he exploits it to the fullest every time.

  4. Again, refs closing their eyes on a us team, while the canadian team gets called on everything. It happening in all 2nd round playoff now. NHL must be back in canadian hands asap.

  5. With respect, have you even read the text you put here? There is NO writing about if it is near the boards or not. It literally says 43.3: This penalty applies ANYWHERE on the playing surface! Fact: The refs simply do not call 90 percent of fauls they would call in a regular season. This is insane to me mostly cuz they go to such length of protecting the players, but near the end of the season when they are most prone to injuries and it matters MOST they ignore their own rules. Either create sperate rules for playoffs or don`t bother pretending there are rules at all.

  6. The defensive player was not moving was not aware of the opposing player. Whether or not it can be discussed about "launching", Marchand could have played the puck and made a play without contact. It also could have injured the player since the spine angle was exposed. Ignorant on potential hazard to the player.

  7. Surprised refs didn't call embellishment, as a leafs fan that call on rodrigues was pathetic, only laughton should have been penalized, so many missed calls on both sides it's horrendous

  8. I'm neutral in this series. I don't see it as dirty. He's in the middle of the ice, completely stationary, looking at the puck in his feet. Puck was sitting there for almost 2 seconds. I mean none of the leafs even tried to give him a passing outlet…look how lazily matthews was skating.

Now to call it as defenseless or he didnt see it coming….there's 4 leafs staring at him, no one could have said anything to him? It's not like it was a scrum on the board with all their backs turned. It's the playoffs….you have to expect contact

  9. You are consistent. Just like the NHL. you can always find a reason to not penalize something done to a Leaf but always see the good sense in penalizing a LEAF for every infraction they may commit. For the LEAFS it's the rule by the book. SMH.

  10. That is 2 mins. They dont need to change shat. They just need to call it. That was dangerous. Can break someone's back doing that like that.

  11. What the hell is wrong with hockey? That was a fair check. The puck was in between Tanev's legs he is fair game. Marchands hit was a hockey hit. This is the playoffs. Its just the leaf fans crying about every thing that doesnt go there way.

  12. It bothered me that the play-by-play didn't even acknowledge the hit. Something like, oh, the birthday boy got away with another one! Yeah it should be a major penalty. I can understand why it isn't called that way as they only call important things like chipping the puck out of play 😆

  13. Easy call for charging, 42.1. Consider the distance he travels before the hit. Doesn't matter that he leaves his feet to make the hit and hits from behind.

  14. Tanev had possession of the puck, so imo there's no penalty on the play. I'm a Leaf's fan & can't stand Marchand who's been suspended 22 games in his career & fined close to a million $ for dirty, dangerous hits, slew-foots & other shitty things. But on this one, nothing there.

  15. Could be 2 for roughing. Nobody has a clue what is and isn't a penalty in the nhl anymore. I didnt think you could just crunch a guy open ice from behind but apparently you can.

  16. These hits should not be legal. It's a blindside hit. The league want to protect the players from injuries to the back and neck well you start with this. These hits can really injure someone neck.

  17. Why can’t the NHL just enforce the rules in the playoffs like they are written? Why is this league such a joke?

As written this was a penalty. Yes, it would have been a major penalty, but that’s what the rule is. I would assume the rule only includes a major because it is a very dangerous play. Also, if it was near the boards then it would be boarding, not checking from behind. This infraction specifically says that it applies anywhere on the ice surface, which is the only thing that differentiates it from boarding.

Could you imagine an NFL playoff game where the QB gets smacked in the head and the ref says “yeah, it’s clearly against the rules as they are written, but I didn’t think it warranted a 15 yard penalty, so I didn’t bother throwing the flag”. The ref would be absolutely ridiculed. The league would be absolutely ridiculed. But this is the NHL, and apparently in the NHL rules are no longer rules as soon as the playoffs hit.

  18. If this hit is not penalized, expect more whiplash injuries as players will just hit from behind on open ice. Any defencemen who just clears the puck out of their zone is now fair game from the rear and won’t know the hit is coming.

  19. "Marchand doesn't launch into it or leave his feet really" as video plays of Marchand launching and leaving his feet. And I'm a Bruins diehard 😲

  20. Are you really that stupid? The rule is not vague in the least. This was checking from behind and Marchand deserved the major and a game FFS!
