I can't see Berggren being extended for 4 to 5 years. If Kane doesn't return (it sounds probable that he does) and the Wings miss out on a top six forward in free agency, Berggren might get a shot to play that role since they are similar players. Right now though, he isn't good enough to make the top six and adds nothing of value to the bottom six, he's really struggled. Doesn't make sense for either side to extend him long-term. He's likely also frustrated and wants out of Detroit if he isn't going to get a bigger opportunity. He might be capable of giving a team 15 to 20 goals with talented enough linemates, but he doesn't drive a line's success and won't find the skilled linemates he needs in the bottom six, especially not in Detroit.
I saw 4 championships and had 30 years of awesome hockey to watch. I'm not overly concerned, I knew they'd have to rebuild sooner or later. I have full faith Yzerman will turn it around.
Remember that the “yzerplan” is a fan coined term, and at least from what I understand it’s just a rebuild. But the fans seem to think he has some elaborate plan like Palpatine did before the clone wars. All this is, is a rebuild, nothing else…
I still think they fumbled heavily with not picking up Stamkos in the off season.. Why tf would he go to Nashville over Detroit? That made no sense and Stevie should have scooped him up when he had the chance.
I don't understand why people think this roster should be better than it is. There is not one cut and dried, world beating, elite player in the entire system. The entire prospect pool is built on promise, not proven.
There was nothing to indicate to me that a team backstopped by that goaltending, having lost that much in total points contributions, in a system that gives up as many quality chances as this one, with such shallow offensive and defensive depth should be better than last season.
Come on Shannon, call the 23-24 season what it was: a shaft job.
I don't think they've even hosted a playoff game at little caesars arena…. yet
If I were in position to make changes, I'd trade Lyon and get both 1B or 1A goal tender, and get front little more skilled. Also to Yzerman I would say you have 1 more season to get us in p,ayoffs, if fails then changes will come on his position. As a Finnish fan I remember Detroit being amazing team. So next season at least to 1st round
It’s been rough…. No first overall picks all those years, the buzz around here is a lot of people want Yzerman fired, I dunno bout that, been rooting for the Stars for 5-6 years now since the wings have been garbage, the past 2 seasons have been exciting though
Wallstedt was there…
The number one factor in this rebuild is if Cossa and/or Augustine become studs. One of them need to hit. This off-season the Wings have two priorities: 1) A top 4 D. 2) A top 6 LW. Either through free agency or trade. They can then push other players down the lineup. Fill in the rest of the roster with kids such as Mazur and Anton Johansson. A full season of McClelland will make a big difference. Not sold on Larkin as captain tbh. Hopefully there is still some growth there. If the Wings don’t break out in the next couple of years they will need to move on from him and rebuild the rebuild.
There was like a week where the wings looked like the best team in the league. And then the 4 Nations happened and Larkin fell off for like a month and a half. They really need to improve on their consistency, if they can just stabilize for longer during the season, they can make the playoffs.
Detroit has cycled through 5 or 6 goalies in the last 2 years. I'm thinking it's the defense
The most misguided and misunderstood rebuild, maybe in NHL history.
The good:
Good Drafting (given their luck) // A replenished prospect pool that has (4) still developing players in Raymond, Seider, Edvinsson and Kasper that are playing top minutes against leagues best on a nightly basis. In addition they have multiple futures in multiple spots so the drafting has been a bright spot up to this point.
PT total increase: / They have improved their point totals, despite being in arguably the toughest division with multiple cup winner and contenders and to at the very least fighting for a playoff spot in the last few games past two seasons, prior to that they were done by January.
Cap Space // Many underperforming contracts have not impacted their salary cap and many will be coming off the books within the next 1-3yrs.
The Bad:
Expectations // Many thought because it was Yzerman he was going to come in and make this team a playoff team in 5 years…. Including MOST media. I see constantly media outlets have a complete uneducated research effort in looking at their draft position fortunates, their desirability factor or their current situation before just saying it is not working. Are they better today then when Yzerman landed? If you answered yes but say things like they still are not a playoff team, then you need to research why.
Draft Luck // Since 2017 the Wings have dropped a total of 9 spots, tied for most of any team in the NHL (Ottawa being the other however, their data goes back to 2011) // They have never moved up in the draft since that time either.
Underwhelming FA contracts // No one will dispute much of them haven’t worked out, but going to the expecstations point – Many think Yzerman made these moves as his #1 option. Many of the FA contracts were because they lost out on others or the term was shorter given Yzerman did not want longer contracts. He tried to retain Ghostibhere, Stamkos went to NSH as opposed to DET as they offered the 4th year, he tried to Cozens (they wanted Kasper)
Nothing irritate me more when people talk like Yzerman can just get who ever he wants and they are dying to come to DET they aren’t.
Summary:
Yzerman never had the draft position nor the FA class to find franchise altering players. So he has to build slowly through the best piece he has a chance at…. This is not discussed enough. Reality is they still need help on D and in Goal, but the timelines and lack of thought out into what is available to Yzerman is a real injustice into the job he is doing… Still work to be done…. But imo this summer he needs to start taking swings to get him over the line.
The back to back CBJ loses killed them this year. My father's been a Wings fan since the late 50's/60's . He's very disgusted by the Wings lack of playoff play.
Lombardi and Mazur are promising prospects.
get rid of holl, chiarot, and gus, trade tarosanko as well get rid of the dead fucking weight on our blue line
The lions, tigers, and pistons have all made the playoffs before the red wings since 2017. And there is no way in hell you could tell me those teams were in a better spot in that year than the wings have been to get back.
Excited to see another year of Trey in the green and white, before he hopefully starts a long productive career backstopping Detroit
Trade Larkin it’s the only way!
7:13 Berggren is not getting the shiny outlook you are giving by anyone that watches them regularly. His game is very top-6 or bust. He can get by on a third line for a while, but it is a matter of time before he's replaced in that spot. He's too soft to not be any faster than he is. While he has a good enough shot, his strength is in his vision and playmaking which he doesn't get a chance to do much of cause his entries and keeping the puck leave a lot to be desired. I like Bergy, but he's doomed to leave the team at some point sooner than later without a weird breakout year that no one sees coming.
8:38 Yzerman has already said that Cossa is not NHL ready. He did say that his attitude on that could change depending on how he did in the AHL playoffs, and that did not go well. He's destined for GR unless he shows out big in camp and pre-season. Even then, he might get sent down to see if that was a fluke given his less than stellar post all star game performance.
9:25 Reporting on Augustine looks wildly different than it did with Petruzelli. Augustine doesn't seem adverse to signing. He just felt it was better for his development to go back and compete again for a title. Honestly, until Cossa gets to Detroit or doesn't, it is probably in the best interests of Augustine's TOI to stay with the Spartans.
11:35 Kane is very limited at this point. What he's still good at he's stellar at. But he has become a bit of a turnover machine. He has issues carrying the puck both in breakouts and entries. He's never been a defensive stalwart. And he's a bit of a moody player to be honest. Sheltered play is the best for him at this point. He's still amazing once you're setup in the offensive zone or if you have him cherry pick. That's about it. BUT he's been invaluable as a mentor. Lucas Raymond's development has gotten even better than it was with him around. Ken, Trevor (FU FanDuel), and a couple of others on the broadcast mentioned talking to people about that and hearing Lucas has really been listening to Kane. I'd hate to lose him for that reason most of all.
I get that many Detroit fans, especially the casuals, are impatient with the rebuild, but I rarely hear great suggestions on what should've been done at any one time from them. The lottery can only go how it goes. The drafting has been good under Yzerman. The development has been good. Trades have been hit or miss. The free agency has been decent to good in short term guys and poor with the long. The team was supposed to take a step back this season if you saw what went out and what came in. You don't replace Ghost Bear, Walman, and Perron with Tarasenko and Gustafsson and expect a step forward. No offense to Edvinsson and Kasper meant, but they overperformed and still didn't replace everything lost. Also, I think Yzerman was thrown a curve ball with the Trouba deal, and I don't think it is talked about enough. Trouba would've made a big difference on the backend. When you're only talking five points, it wouldn't take much. They're where I thought they'd be.
The comments from Larkin after the season kinda told the story. Suggesting the team lost faith or confidence because more trades weren't made tells me you have a bit of a soft locker room. This roster was good enough to make the playoffs, McClellan kind of proved that after coming in. These players need to learn to put a full season together and finish, I'm sick of everyone blaming Yzerman.
Larkin and Co need to stop relying on getting help and play better throughout the season
I hate that people have taken the term 'Yzerplan' and turned it into this meme. It makes it sound like this is exactly what Stevie wanted to happen. There was no clear cut plan, he inherited a mess, a depleted farm system, and zero defensive depth. The plan was to draft their way to success, and that process is well underway.
March Sadness is absolutely a thing with this team.
Augustine is Michigan so he staying
Never thought the Lions would become the Red Wings and the Red Wings would become the Lions in this town.
*Lions (almost) becoming the Red Wings..in the process
This past 15-2 Lions season sorta reminded me of the 95-96 Wings going 62-13-7 then losing to the Avs.
Wings need everything and probably a new GM unfortunately. Letting Gostisbehere go and Perron hurt this team a ton.
I think Stevie still has one more year before he starts feeling heat.
Honestly, I think the forward group is decent, even if Kane does leave or retire this summer. Defense and goaltending has been the primary issue, whether it's positional coaching issues or the players they need to fix the back end.
Whatever happened behind the scenes with the defensive remodel a year ago that led to the departure of Ghost, Walman, and Maatta, Detroit didn't do enough to replace that type of puck moving ability and it cost them with constant turnovers and ineffective 5 on 5 scoring. Whether it's promoting ASP or another prospect to help out Edvinsson, Johansson, and Seider or turning to the UFA market, until the defense gets some skilled upgrades the Wings are probably going to stay a bubble team.
I would say one of the major issues with the Wings not moving up into a playoff team has been there bad luck in the draft of being knocked down from the top three, especially the years they were terrible. They do not have that top line center who can change a game and I feel that has been there Achilles heal. Until they get that center they will be in the middle of the pack.
Legorocks99 said that the Red Wings are going to be getting Quinn Hughes, Filip Forsberg, Matthew Knies, and Kyle Connor… does Legorocks99 have credible sources? 😂
4 years for Berg?????? No thanks unless it’s cheap cheap.
Stevie has done a great job of building an ahl team!
The pain doesn't stop
They don't want to score because they're sick of hearing the Eminem song ever single time they do.
Who wouldve thought Andrew Copp was the glue this season
Game 7 of the 2009 SCF was the turning point in Red Wings history. They'll never win the Cup again.
We wont see any success until we move on at GM. The Yzerplan is a failure, and he's too stubborn to make the necessary changes. If he doesnt offer sheet Knies or make drastic changes at the pro level this year, he needs to be shown the door.
Wings had to have set the all time record for most odd man rushes against. We would need the best goalie in the league to make the playoffs. Also, probably the least toughest team in the league. I’m part Swedish and love the players, but let’s face it we need to get some muscle on the wings and defense. The makeup of the team is not built for playoff hockey even if we made the playoffs.
It cannot be overstated how much this team has been screwed over by the stupid lottery. They have had no chance to draft a truly impact superstar. That being said, I will stick with Steve but his FA signings have been worse than atrocious, especially watching Gostisbere and Perron in the playoffs and he could have re-signed them. I am really starting to feel a lot of doom and gloom surrounding this team. They essentially stuck in purgatory, too good to tank and not good enough to make the playoffs, thus picking in the murky middle and being unable to draft an impact player. Not good.
Tough for Detroit (and other Atlantic teams) when half their division have been consistent cup contenders for a decade. Boston finally fell off this year but Ottawa and Montreal took their place
I don't even think the Red Wings are close! They been spinning in neutral for like 3/4 years now. When is the last time they had a winning record, 2015? They are good for about 80-90 points and that's it!
Honestly yes steve was given a dumpster fire to begin with but this is his team he built his contracts his picks and the team is trash. If it wasnt 19 as the GM he would have been fired 3 years ago. This team is trash no way they make the playoffs even if they did they loose in 4.
I viewed this year as a big step forward. They did end up just outside the playoffs BUT they did it with 5 guys that were primarily in Grand Rapids the year before: Edvinsson, Solderblom, Kasper, Johansson and Bergren. That's about a quarter of the line up. Those guys start the next season with a year of NHL experience. Other teams have aging stars that maybe gone soon. There are a lot of impatient, entitled crybabies that claim to be Wings fans but Steve has done a great job and I don't think fans realize that Detroit is clearly ahead of Winnepeg, Buffalo and ??? in being an attractive place for free agents. Low tax, sunny states have a huge advantage. Stick with home grown Michigan boys and Detroit's EU feeder system through Sweden.
Retire #91 for Fedorov and hire him as GM
