He has built a better coaching staff by hiring the right people it seems and has drafted solid players . The rest is on the coaches and the players to go out there and earn they money
Shea has too many sticks of his butt about this guy.. Ryan has had his hits and misses, but to say he hasn't done anything. It's just pure ignorance. But Hey, it got my click, so I guess it worked.
Every step he's taken has gotten us here. Everyone wants a championship every year. The reality is, building a team in a GMs image takes time and mistakes. He's made mistakes, no question, but i think we're about to see the culmination of his work next season. And this season, we're a serious contender
The only thing he’s done in my book that is noteworthy is the Carolina trade – that was a masterclass of fleecing a team who was QB needy after he intentionally tanked.
No, you guys complain about anything and everything. Don’t pick a player that you wanted, horrible draft choices. Even though you wanted a new coaching staff.
And how about actually listening to Poles and Johnson. They told us they were looking for bigger tackles and defensive edges. But you still thought they would draft an undersized speed edge or an athletic left tackle when they said they needed someone to set the edge.
Ben Johnson !! You can win the off season all you want but at the end of the day coaching is still at the top of my list when it comes to winning games
He's put together a talented roster granted last year it was lead by the McCaskey chosen head coach so it turned into a shit show and he's kept us out of cap hell and he's the first GM in several decades who has resigned his first draft pick he made that's not to say he hasn't had misses but his misses didn't set the franchise back a decade at a time so far he got the coach everyone wanted but to look at him as a failure is obsured
He completely rebuilt their money situation. Came in with almost 100 mil in dead cap. Shea sucks and Pat the Designer heading that way. Shea just doesn't get it and when they're good he will give all credit to Ben Johnson.
Ryan Poles is a legitimate GM who executed a rebuild (on his side at least) to the letter:
2022 – Tore down the team and successfully tanked while the team still was entertaining to watch due to Justin Fields’ crazy offensive streak from Weeks 7-10, leading the League during that time by averaging 30+ PPG with a cast of misfits on both sides of the ball (shedding bad contracts and regaining a ton of cap space); Gordon, Brisker, and Braxton were quality picks for where they were selected and the UDFAs signed produced gems or decent players in Sandborn and Blackwell
2023 – Historically fleeced the Panthers trading down for a future first and top50 picks thru 2025; They also started to rebuild the defense (Edwards, Sweat, Stevenson, Terrell Smith etc) while still paying attention to offense a little (DJ Moore, & Darnell Wright); Bears would have won 10 games with JF, if not for coaches Flus and Getsy in Weeks 4, 11 & 15
2024 – The focus on offense was real that year and you could tell Poles wanted to draft Caleb (scouting him since 2022) and pair him up with a revamped WRs room (Keenan/Rome added) plus Swift/Rojo and Kmet; Unfortunately “Matt Everlose” was still their HC, and it cost them winnable games yet again (Everyone craps on Tory Taylor pick despite it not being his fault he had to be top10 in punt attempts due to the ineptitude of Waldron and that much bemoaned for almost two decades O-line)
2025 – Firing Eberflus and hiring Ben Johnson (who brought in a strong coaching staff that was mostly unconnected to him) to his signings of solid OL / DL players or mentors (Thuney, Jackson, Dalman, Jarrett, & Dayo) and pairing them with talented prospects or second/third year journeyman (Loveland/Burden/Trapilo/Turner/Booker/Dexter etc) was a master class in quality roster construction
Note: Bears Defense was actually a top10 unit from Week 12 of 2023 thru Week 6 of 2024 (with healthier or at that time healthy as can be Billings/Brisker/Gordon/Sweat/Edwards/Johnson leading the charge)

Basically Ryan has done everything he can to build this team out in less than 4 seasons but poor coaching/development/team health/bad trades or picks will factor in regardless of the game plan intended by Poles.
Here’s hoping that it all comes together Chicago Cubs style (2014-2016) for Da Bears in 2025 and beyond — I would call 2025 the 2015 of that timeline imho 😅
—
Postscript: Further light has been shed on why Eberflus was retained after 2023 season (Ownership didn’t want to pay for two more full years of the HC’s original 5-year deal, and the new President Warren didn’t believe in allowing a call to or sit down with then available Jim Harbaugh); That’s not on the GM when your franchise owners tie your hands!
P.P.S. A Bill Polian-led committee (which included then team President Phillips and team chairman George McCaskey) has handpicked and pre screened every HC candidate for every newly hired GM in Chicago since 2013 until 2022. An example would be that Matt Eberflus was interviewed three days before Ryan Poles was hired, who probably currying favor with his new bosses as a first time general manager, hired the Indy Colts’ DC a couple days later.
He said it would take 4 years. In the beginning. He tore down the roster. And he's slowly building each year for longevity. Not one year wonders like 90% of these teams do. I'll take the grind and sustained success! I will say though it's now.
When Poles came to the Bears, this team had very little talent! Yes, the Bears were horrible! Poles is about to reap the rewards. The Bears are gonna be winning for a long time. 🫵
Haven’t drafted not 1 all pro players or signed a FA that has became an all pro … Jaylon Johnson was already here before poles … poles had 2 #1 overall picks and just had a 5 win record wtffff
Flipping the books in one offseason shouldn’t be as undervalued as we make it here. Updated the culture of the building and its relationships (this pods advancement is evidence of that). And the process to build this current roster was well thought out and appears to be representative of the game today for the first time ever.
I don’t think I run to his defense, but right now I’m neutral on him. He’s done some smart things trade wise, even his fail of a trade with the Steelers WR who shall not be named made sense for what the outlook of FA looked like. Nothing will ever be 100% but he’s signed our guys to not too over the top contracts most of the time and we have a solid roster built and money makes sense. So construction hasn’t been too bad. But the next question is can he draft more hits and a HoF. That’s his question mark right now who is that elite top 10 player at his position or even top 5 he drafted

Its crazy how much the “tank season” looked like the other ones 🤣🤣
