Laughton hit on Rodrigues – Tough Call Recommendation

Scott Laughton drove Evan Rodrigues into the boards from behind, and the only penalty on this play was…two minutes for embellishment on Rodrigues. I can’t even.

  1. if toughcall did all the calls he did this series would just be Reinhardt and bobrovsky vs like 90% of the leafs team

  2. He got his gloves up to take the brunt then put his gloves over his face as though he had been hurt more than he was…2 minutes each

  3. I normally agree with your analyses but have to disagree on this one. Look at Laughton's skates before the check. He's stopping. It's a soft hit. Also, Rodriguez knows he's coming and turns towards the boards. He also snaps his head back off time from any impact. Perhaps he was hurt but I think that's what a ref saw and put together.

  4. “That’s got to be the best pirate I’ve ever seen!”
    “So it would seem…”
cut to Rodrigues over-reacting to the check like a cheater

  5. Don't like either team… But if the hit to the back of the goalies head isn't a penalty this is clean and embellishment. I don't like it but the refs in game 1 and dops set the standard.

  6. I wasn't going to comment but changed my mind , you're video and assessment is crap . The reason no penalty was given was the panther player slammed on the brakes knowing he was going to checked. If i was the ref i would of given for embellishment. Did you not notice how fast he got up when nobody cared.

  7. im a leafs fan and even my jaw dropped when I heard that call. not like it was a power play for the leafs so it didnt have an affect on the game itself just a shocking call. seemed like Rodrigues was ok tho thankfully

  8. Definitely a penalty for Laughton and definitely the embellishment call is pretty dumb from the ref. But that wasn't a hard hit and he was close to the boards already. This is a pretty standard hockey hit you see in the playoffs all the time. 2 minutes for Laughton and a chuckle for Rodriguez for being soft.

  9. Nice turn towards the boards at last minute, he put himself in a vulnerable position is why there wasn’t a major penalty. Holmberg is apparently a target for Florida and Refs don’t care!!

  10. He dove. I played hockey my whole life (age 4 through D1), into the beer leagues (43 now). Rod sold that harder than glengary glen Ross.

  11. From the League's perspective this is a clean hit. Rodrigues was able to get his arms up to protect himself. His head never makes contacts with the glass. They don't actually care about if the hit was from behind. Rodrigues sells his head anyways and was correctly called for embellishment.

  12. Look it up… Laughton penalty was NOT for the hit on Rodriguez… was on the interaction with Schmitt after the hit

  13. Sorry, you're wrong. Boarding yes, but limited to a 2-min penalty. All the impact was absorbed by the FLA player's gloves and he mimes like his face hit the glass, hence the possibility for embellishment. The fact that this is clear on the replay and yet you claim "3 game suspension" is utter nonsense.

  14. they never call an embellishment without calling both, and when they finally do this is the one they pick? honestly kind of hilarious if you don't care about either team

  15. It is the NHL.
Florida took out Toronto's goalie in the middle of the first game.
I'm surprised there wasn't more payback than there was. That was gentle compared to what happens in this sport. That hit would never make anybody's highlight reel

  16. The way he threw his stick I'm surprised it didn't end up in the bleachers straight diving bs like Marchand's ballerina move in the 1st.

  17. Investigate Chris Rooney. He’s been making these types of calls against the Panthers for YEARS now. He reffed the Vegas series and we all know how that turned out!!

  18. So maybe don't turn your back to the adversary like that? Maybe stop relying on rules to protect you, and actually protect yourself???

  19. Light bump and he throws himself into the boards, thows his stick, grabs his head, runs down the tunnel, and comes back out like nothing happened. Great call embellishment all the way. Panthers hockey.

  20. 2 things. 1, in real time, I thought he took a dive as well. 2, you have lost all credibility, and I will no longer watch this channel due to you thinking that this deserves a suspension at all, let alone 3-5 games.

  21. Rodriguez was atleast on hos feet and able to defend himself. The leaf player was flat on the ground getting hit with sticks and punched with no ability to defend himself

  22. The refs know Florida by now, and he obviously embellished. He likely would have gotten the call had he not given the ref that totally obvious glance when he was bent over on the ice. Rodrigues needs acting classes this offseason.

  23. You mentioned in the Rempe on Hiskanen play that the NHL isn't calling hits from behind anymore. They're consistent, at least…?

  24. first thing I said to my kid in real time was he's faking it. Then saw the replay and it confirmed it. He throws his head back and his head doesn't even touch the glass

  25. Yes it was a hit from behind and maybe a penalty would of been called Yet he threw himself forward to make it worse and ref was like not today

  26. Get bent – another "player safety" line of bullsh&t – make sure only US teams advance – Might as well just all the league WWE-NHL

  27. You're missing A LOT here.

Laughton got a double minor for roughing, presumably for this and the scrum after. Rod's head did not hit the glass. He got the embellish trying to sell it as a major.

And frankly, considering suspension for this is beyond laughable.

  28. Laughton received a four minute boarding penalty – I thought it would be a five??? Not sure why the embellishment call, he did come back. Maybe Refs saw something??? I would still rather have poor officiating than only call puck over glass penalties.
And they were bad both ways.
