‘I think that is a terrible call’: Biron on controversial Stars’ goal

What side are you on when it comes to the controversial Stars goal? Do you put this Game 3 loss on Connor Hellebuyck? Are special teams the biggest issue facing the Jets? TSN Hockey analyst Martin Biron joins SC with Jay Onrait to share his thoughts.

  1. That’s a Good Goal, the rule says “deflection” off the goalies stick when Helley was trying to play the puck. The puck wouldn’t have gone in had Helley not make a play on it.

  2. Im a Jets fan and the only problem i had with the goal, was the BS review. We can argue what a kick is and isn't all day, but Arniel should have known it was going to be a wishy washy call and used that review time as a timeout and reset the team instead of just staring at the review booth for almost 10 minutes.

  3. if the puck was going TOWARD the back of the net i 100% agree its a no goal. but the puck was going wide if helle doesnt touch it. am i insane? is that an L take?

  4. The rules are extremely black and white with no room for interpretation. It essentially says that the awarded goal scorer can't be off a kick…So you can't kick and have it then go off the other team/goalie/ref/net. If the last offensive player touching the puck was from a kick, then it's a no goal.

Suddenly the NHL brings in "propel" which is not in the rule book regarding this, and saying shit like Helle propelled the puck in after the kick…AFTER THE KICK…the NHL admits themselves that there was a kick.

There was no chance for a puck to be propelled if there wasn't first a kick.

The NHL gave the game winning goal to a kick

And to those saying "well the stars still scored two more"…If that was called back, like it should have been, the stars wouldn't have the same momentum and it would have been a completely different game after that.

  5. Puck would not have went in from the kick alone. It was kicked towards the front of the goal. If the goalies stick was just sitting there and the puck hit it and went in I would agree that it was a no goal but when the goalie swatted at the puck with the stick the goalie himself redirected into his own net. This is an own goal. The goalie knew this from his reaction. Only people betting on the jets are complaining of the kick.

  6. If the kick happened back at the blue line and the goalie swatted at it and it went in would you still be screaming kicked in goal

  7. Ok, let’s say the goal didn’t count. They still win by 2 after that goal.
Also, for a kicking motion to happen don’t you have to put your leg back to get momentum??? Petrovic was stopping.
9 minute delay benefits them both, never 1 team.

  8. According to NHL rule book it is a no goal.

“A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who kicks a puck that deflects into the
net off any player, goalkeeper or official.

    (i) A kicked puck that deflects off the body of any player of either team (including the goalkeeper) shall be ruled no goal.
(ii) A kicked puck that deflects off the stick of any player (excluding goalkeeper) shall be ruled a good goal

It’s actually quite black and white. problem is NHL not following their own rules over and over again.

  9. Ok, let’s say the goal didn’t count. They still win by 2 after that goal.

  10. i really dont understand why you have biron on. saying that helle was trying to make a save does not mean that, in the process, he did not propel the puck in the net. he clearly knocked it in the direction of the open net. accidentally – yes. do you just have biron on to say whatever he thinks definitively?

  11. Garbage call. It was clearly a KICK. The NHL decided to give the goal to Dallas and then spent 10 mins trying to figure out how to justify the decision. BOGUS call. The NHL hates the Jets. This is about the NHL trying to expand the league into Texas and they want Dallas to win.

  12. If the Jets lose the series, is this goal the reason? No. The Jets still havent won an away game, and their "MVP" has a 5.25 GAA in 4 games so far. Call the goal back, and the Stars still looked like they were the team that wanted to win that game.

  13. As a Jets fan i think the league got it right. There's no indication that puck was going in until Helly stick swept it in

  14. The puck wasn't moving towards the goal. It was going to the slot, then Hellebuyck essentially shot it in himself.

How is it even controversial at this point!?

  15. Doesn’t matter if it was going to the net or corner. It was kicked in. Making a judgement in super slow motion is idiotic. Use the rule book – it’s a kicking motion that hits goalie stick. It’s a no goal! Byron is right!

  16. I think it's clear as day that it changed direction again after petrovics blade touched it. Maybe i have bad eyes but sure looked like it. Go to 3:25

  17. Biron is yet another talking head that doesn't understand the difference between a deflection and playing the puck. Hellebuyck played the puck, it went into his net because of how he played it. It's an own goal.

    It's really not that complicated.

  18. The fact that he backhanded it into his own net is entirely the reason it was a good call. Had he not made that motion, the puck would’ve traveled well wide of the net.

  19. That kicking motion should not have been allowed. However, the Jets look tired and the Stars look energized. And Helleuyck does not look like a big game goalie.

  20. As a Flyers fan, I haven't trusted Biron since the 07-08 playoffs where he absolutely crapped the bed against the Penguins (despite Philly out shooting Pittsburgh in 3 of 5 games and allowing 6 on like 22 shots in game 5 to be eliminated) so it's not surprising I disagree.
    It's a goal.
It sucks for the Jets to lose with this to be the game winning goal. But it also sucked for the Oilers to lose because Draisatl misplayed the puck in game 3 and no one argued that wasn't a goal.
    Tough bounces for Canadian teams.
    Period.
    End of story.
    Move on.

  21. Fans and YouTube channel/blogger fans for that matter can whine all they want about goals and none of that matters, the only thing that matters is the decisions made on the ice by the officiating crew and in this case the NHL Situation Room in Toronto. Also, for those of you that actually think you know the rules better than the officials and how to apply them in all situations on the ice, well… guess again. You don't.

  22. Change the rule! I'm a Stars fan and we had two goals scored against us by out own players in the Av's series. The rules on this are always going to be easy to get wrong and cause controversy. If the goal goes into the net it's should be a goal regardless of how it goes in.

  23. They should have kept the call simple…it got kicked towards the net and went in. No Goal. Its like they grasped at anything to call it good….shouldn’t be that way…

  24. Get rid of this rule. Kicking the puck in should be legal. No hands but feet are ok. Stop wasting everyone’s life
