The main reason is Malkin, he's no longer a second line centre or even less a dman on the powerplay like in his greater days, he's become very slow and I think he's had the worst season of his career this year, maybe excluding his rookie season. While Crosby isn't slowing down, Malkin is, so he would be a great second line centre for the remainder of his career (I assume he wants to play until he's 40), I know he Sid and Kris L. are all thick as thieves but if one guy can get traded for a couple of younger (they could be 28 to 32, production and salary is all that matters), many teams would get Malkin this way just for the sake of having Malkin, and who knows, maybe he ends up with a team that has more great wingers than 2, which is the current state of affairs after they got rid of Beauvillier and Cody Glass. They have to keep Rakell, he's found his mojo back. They can trade one of their 2 goalies, I'd do away with Nedelkovic and look for a decent replacement who has the potential of stealing Jarry's 1A. Bring in Gibson or Woll or Lindgren, just something that in case Jarry never returns to his pre 2022 injury before the playoffs stability, he had 8 shutouts last season, but he's so inconsistent since that injury that someone with a proven past should be placed along Jarry, Nedelkovic can help another team who needs a solid backup, he's never going to be a full on starter.
Nobody will touch Karlsson so might as well go along with it, he's still good, not great, I never expected him to score 102 pts again. Trading Malkin, if he wants to finish his career elsewhere where he could win the cup, I'm sure he's the one out of the OG 3 that could be taken away from the Pens if the price is fair. A retool for Crosby's last years (I'd be surprised if he retires after next season, he's just had 3 similar season in a row where he scored just a little below 93 pts, he's far from burnt. I think he only signed for a couple years because after that he will listen to his body to determine for how long his signs again, he's one of the rare guys who can play until they're 42-43 and aren't goalies or Chelios lol.
Ok everyone, practice your surprised face 😮. We're going to need this exactly one year from now when the penguins win the draft lottery. In all seriousness I hope they do get McKenna or some other generational talent player. The penguins need to keep their identity
Should have never re-signed Letang. Start the rebuild earlier, give Crosby a chance in his last season.
Sam Poulin was supposed to be become a star but even the one time he had an alright beginning of a season, Sully just didn't like him or most young guys because he never really had a chance, even this season when he was called up, giving him a chance meant getting 15mins of icetime, he's gotten way far from it, and he also had a lost season where he had to deal with mental health, that sucks indeed, but so did Drouin and look at him go with the Avs, best season of his career right after leaving MTL. Poulin will never be able to show he was a worthy 6th 1st round pick I'm afraid, his contract ends this summer, I think and if it doesn't, I think he'll go play in Europe instead of rotting away in the AHL once more. Not the first of their rare high level 1st rounders they spoil by leaving them in the AHL and calling them back to play 8 mins per game as if they were some enforcers but, no, they were high overall offensive potential, with Poulin you had a two-side responsible kind of guy too, a lot like his dad. I'll be sad if he packs to play in the SMliga or some other far from the spotlights European pro league.
Of the 6 skaters you have written there, 3 have to go. 1 likely Letang as he's kind of lost any semblace of defense and the other Malkin, as you said not the player he was. If not Letang then Karlsson but Letang the better option. Crosby can play another 3 or 4 years. Nothing wrong with that guy at all.
Part of the issue with the goalies is their stats look worse than they are due to the defense. They face a lot of shots and pressure. They don't have Fleury anymore but the goalies aren't terrible.
I can see the Penguins "magically" winning the draft lottery again in 2026 and somehow picking 1st especially if they start complaining about financial trouble again. All longtime NHL fans will be incredibly shocked.
They waited 2 yr too long to retool so they won't be able to do what the Capitals have just pulled off. It will be another rough season or two and a steeper climb, even with Crosby.
While I'd love to se a full tear down rebuild, it feels like the team is stubbornly going to refuse to do so while Crosby is still around. And as we saw with the draft lottery the other day, there's no guarantees that route. So unless we see Dubas start trading big pieces away, such as Rust, Rakell, Karlsson, they're just the new Minnesota Wild. Too good to get a great pick that actually changes things, but not good enough to do anything notable.
Nah, they promote Crosby to president of the team.
Nieto, Rakell, and Hayes are 32, and Acciari is 33. They have eight other players between 27 and 31, including their two goalies. They invested in a bunch of players to fill support roles for Crosby, Malkin, and Letang but those players can't replace them and will need to be replaced themselves as the older players slow down and eventually and retire. There's a lot of experience among those 15 players but also the Pens may have waited too long to rotate some of them out and now a re-tool might be too little too late.
Shoulda started this 3-4 years ago – it's gonna be awhile before we see the Pens in the playoffs again.
I find it funny that Crosby and Ovi have been tied together, and now both REFUSE TO AGE!
STUDS
Just kinda sucks seeing the caps having success when that could be the penguins had they had competent management over the last 5-7 years
I think crosby has carried the torch pretty well, 3 cups/ 4 appearances, and he can pass him in points, i agree Lemieux is better, but Crosby has lived up to the bill in every way
Maybe they can let Crosby go somewhere to win one last Stanley Cup – he deserves it if he wants it.
did nothing but read off numbers/stats talks about the actual future of the team for .2 seconds
Crosby is just going to play forever is what I think management was hoping.
To me, Geno is the linchpin. For the simple reason that Sid doesn't want to go first. If Geno agreed to be a 2nd/3rd line for a team like the Kings/Wild/Devils, then I think Sid might be swayed to reassess his options.
Wait EK65 was the piece you needed to be good.
@shannon The islanders relieve Lou Lamoriello of his duties, win the first pick in the NHL draft and you do a video about Pittsburgh? Wow the Islander disrespect is alive and well I see. I thought you were on our side. Shame shame shame @thehockeyguy
Crosby about to be longest tenured captain of one team in
NHL history by the end of his contract.
if i am pittsburg… i will play Jarry as much as possible next season 😀
The Penguins are kinda like the Boston Celtics, the old guard doesn't just leave they're waiting to hand the franchise off to the new guard.
You can't replace Crosby
The first step of being in a rebuild is admitting you’re in a rebuild.
Is Crosby married? Children?
Does he have anything outside of hockey?
Crosby wont move to another team
You are a gem Hockey Guy
Thanks for your videos and breakdown!
Can crosby please waive for a trade to minney? I'll give u rossi and a 2026 1st
Dubas will sign Marner to try and get the Penguins in the playoffs,
to be fair to Malkin he's had an absolute revolving door of 4th liner linemates this year. I stopped counting at 9 different linemates. he's probably still a 60-65pts player on a real line.
I always said that Dubas' true measure, would be how he addresses this rebuild. He won't ask the old guys to go, they will just attrition out. Good for him, for canning Sully.
They won't add in goal because they think Blomeand Murashov are the future. It's a waiting game while those guys mature, and they will let Jarry/Ned keep the net warm for that.
I low key want EK65 back in San Jose. Now that we’re in the build phase of the rebuild, and we have a stupid amount of cap space, if he’s willing to return it would be amazing to see him slinging passes to WillMack.
Said it before he was hired. Dubas sucks. He didn’t do anything in Toronto why did anyone think he was good
whose gonna tell Sid its time to tank? I know its way past the days it happens, but any chance Sid becomes the player-coach? They want him in the organization beyond his playing days
What I have seen from interviews with Malkin is he would like to retire from Pittsburgh
I dream of a Crosby and Letang deal to MTL for 2 first round picks and a prospect, but I'll probably have to keep dreaming.
Dubas has bought in nobody of quality during his tenure. For the leafs he paid premium assets and always acquired depth guys.
I think it’s possible Crosby to Colorado. Good buddies with Mackinnon, they’re playing on team Canada together. Mackinnon gonna start marketing this summer to Crosby, and the Avs are just a small step away from hoisting it again
Last season they missed the playoffs because of that abysmal powerplay and tne amount of shorthanded goals allowed.
He wasn’t Lemieux but no one was going to be. He is the second best player of all time!lol
That said Crosby definitely rose to the level. 3 cups to 2 on the ice.
I didn't know Steve Tasker was such a hardcore Pens fan
Got a lot of bad contracts on this team
Crosby and LeBron are very similar in that regard! Two of the greatest to ever do it
You won't see this team tank, not with Sid out there. I see a repeat of this past season, except with a lineup that includes, Ville Koivunen, Rutger Mcgroarty, Owen Pickering, Avery Hayes, and Harrison Brunicke. With some luck, hopefully we land a top 5 pick in 2025.
Good morning Shannon, thank you for this video on my favorite team, the Penguins.
I believe NY will pick this year with their 12th pick because the hiring of Sully has them believing they'll be in the playoffs and going for a run at it. So, next years 1st, in their eyes, will drop to somewhere 19th-24th or so. Penguins will have their 1st next year, I just hope NY doesn't make the playoffs, and it ends up being 12th-16th for the Penguins.
I really hope the Penguins go after Rossi from the Wild! He would be an excellent 2nd line, and who knows, maybe 1st line, center for years to come. He's only 23 years old, tons of talent, and Dubas has said, "we're now in the execution part of our plan. Where we'll use our assets to accumulate young talent, we want to be successful for years to come. Either by trade or free agency but most likely trade or develop" Rossi fits perfect 👌 also we don't really have a dynamic center in our farm yet. We desperately need a left defenseman too. Rakell could definitely be used to acquire what we need if Dubas is looking to part with experience who just scored 35 goals and two years left on his contract at only 5$ mill per!
Will b interesting to see what they go in net. I’m with u in thinking they don’t necessarily go all out on trying to win next year. Maybe Jarry and Ned are the guys again and let the kids cook more in Wilkes
He’s not a big name right now, but young Koivunen will be a 60-70 point getter for them next year.
Shannon is right though, still need that TRUE young star. But they’ve got pieces for sure.
Jarry is our Tank commander o7 🐧
Old team time is now canucks also whatever you called it ?
