  1. Plenty of blame to go around. But Cheli is right, no time to sit around and feel sorry about yourself. Its time to get up and get moving, find the motivation and means to get better. This applies to Larkin and the players, and Stevie as well. These guys need to meet up and clear the air between them, so that they can move on to the job at hand.

  2. This might be lengthy and I do apologize. But I’ve been a wings fan my whole life. I’m 25 now, love this team and will always love them no matter what. I personally think the blame is to be had on both sides honestly. I agree that yzerman has some players on this team “defensive mainly” that just shouldn’t even be playing hockey. I feel he has the opportunity to improve in a lot of areas within the the team. Such as, adding well rounded and effective defensemen. Having as many goalies on the teams isn’t helpful either. I also agree that the redwings lack the grit enforcer type on forward. I feel that part plays a bigger role than people think. But on the other hand I do believe that the team needs to suck it up and strip dropping the ball when it comes to games that we are up going into the third and blow it in the last few seconds. Even our best players seem to be struggling to find the motivation to do anything. Which isn’t gonna help the rest of the team. All in all the problem is everywhere in my opinion and they need to figure something out.

  3. I've said it before, Yzerman is just plain arrogant. He doesn't feel the need to explain why he does or dosen't do something.
    Think Jake Walman.

  4. Well… first, too soon for any of this. Stevies's presser should be sometime soon, right? I'm sure this and more will be addressed then. I know, folks want something to talk about, but this just sends bad vibes where those vibes may not exist.

Anyway. Your answers: 1. The concerns about the team having not gotten better is valid. But again… we're building through the draft. This takes time. The only people upset about Stevie not selling the farm to buy a tractor are the ones who are impatient. We knew this would take time when he came in and said he was building through the draft, and it's not like we had anything to build from. We had Larkin, some botton-6 forwards masquerading as top-6 on a very depleted and very bad team, and that's it. Just because Ottawa sold the farm doesn't mean we should.
    2. That second question implies both can't be at fault equally. Larkin's play was subpar, especially after Four Nations. Why- that was the case doesn't matter, it was. He's the captain, and everyone on that team feeds off his vibes too. If he's gonna have bad vibes, guess how the rest of the team will feel? Stevie bears blame for the construction of the team, for sure. We need a splash, at least one top-6 F and one top-4 D. We need to trade/buyout/bury bad contracts. We need to get better, not just on paper, but in practice too.

I know, essay question stuff right here, but still. It's an answer.

  5. If Larkin brought it home from the 4 Nations, that's entirely his own fault. The Wings were one of the absolute hottest teams in the league heading into 4 Nations and I don't quite see how you return to the best team over the last month, and see it as a disappointment.

For the entire discussion, I just think that Larkin is in an unfortunate position. I imagine that he has to feel how Yzerman felt through the 80s as they were rebuilding but it paid off in the end for all of the waiting. He's just got to tough it out and be a leader for a couple more years before the team catches up with him. The team isn't close enough to justify adding expensive talent for a playoff run. Cozens was the "Big acquisition" for a lot of pundits, but I'm with Stevie in being unwilling to move Marco without heavy compensation. Marco had a slow start, yet he finished the rest of the year on a 40 goal pace after the coaching change. Swapping Marco out might have earned you a couple extra goals and assists but not enough to become an instant contender. At the beginning of this year I personally felt the Wings would get a little worse as I expected to be playing quite a few rookies instead of vets and I ended up being right. It sucks watching your team lose, but I am so excited for next year. Marco Kasper and Albert Johansson played well above expectations this year and I'll be excited to see their continued growth. Both have the potential to be Elite players within 2 years. Simon is going to grow. I think the dawn is near for the Wings and it'll be blinding.

  6. Probably say something a little controversial right now, but dylan larkin is at his peak and it would probably be a good time to trade him. Not a Larkin, hater or anything. He's a great player, but you could get some key pieces of the puzzle and probably a good
Spot in this years draft. Just something to ponder on

  7. Larkin was obviously hurt after the second Canada game, anyone could see he was about 75% after that. His comments make more sense if all the Red Wings knew that. Yzerman standing pat also makes sense if you know the Wings won’t go anywhere without Larkin anyway.

  8. Going to the press and not the source may have opened the door for Larkin to be traded. Perhaps this is what he wants. Bye.

  9. The Yzerplan is taking longer than I expected and I can see how everyone could be frustrated by that but as the captain Larkin needs to shut and take more responsibility for the way the team chokes every time it’s in a position to show that they are ready to really compete for a playoff spot. Honestly after those comments I’d give the C to someone else next year or even better trade him if he’s willing to wave the no trade clause in his contract.

  10. Did yzerman go on and say these type of comments through the years that the wings were called the “dead wings”? No he stuck it out like a REAL captain should and lead his team Stanley cups. There was nobody to get at the trade deadline without giving up young prospects like kasper who is now a stud. Looks like yzerman should have went with the other option and gotten rid of Larkin. You want something to be done BYE

  11. Yzerman gave SJ a second rounder in the offseason to take Walman who was then traded by SJ for a first. Anything Larkin is feeling in terms of frustration is less than that of the fan base. Another offseason of wait until next year with no plan to make the leap

  12. I prefer if a player is honest during a press conference, instead of giving the same old clichés. Stevie Y does need to be called out. He’s made numerous horrible trades since he’s been GM. I do believe he’s done a good job in the drafting department. If Stevie trades Larkin because of his comment, then he really needs to go as a GM.

  13. From what I saw this season, there is enough blame to go around. If the team played the first half of the season as well as they did the second half they’d be in the playoffs. If the coaching staff would have been addressed sooner…they’d be in the playoffs. At the end of the day the team/organization wins/ looses as a team/organization. Shoulda woulda coulda, it is what it is. I Personally would rather get to the playoffs and make it to the finals. I didn’t see a payoff this team in Detroit this year. Which is very disappointing. Looking forward to next year. LGRW!!!

  14. Larkin is a weak captain and I hope he gets traded after this. Yzerman gave him a chance and all he did was blame the GM. Toss him. Trust the Yzerplan!

  15. Will someone answer my question how long did it take the wings with a young Steve yzerman to rebuild after the Marcel Dion, Dave strader, Micky Redman era? Overnight i don't think so remember how bad we'were with yzerman until we got the right key pieces to build around him ,it took 4 rebuilds because you had to replace, Dion, strader, and Redman Year 5 we were on our way to becoming a DYNASTY!!! Next year we will be back in the playoffs and serious contenders again!!!!!!!

  16. He was playing with AA and Anthony Mantha when Yzerman got here. Maybe he should shut his mouth and actually show up for the team at the end of the season for once.

  17. Larkin needs to look in the mirror. He needs to put on his big boy pants and play hockey. He sounds like a whipped puppy in interviews after the game. What message does this send to the rest of the team? If I were making $8M a year I would be playing my a** off regardless of being discouraged or not. After Four Seasons Larkin had checked out and was not playing anywhere near his potential. Time to give up the “C”. Yzerman needs to get his act together and be willing to explain why he makes the trades and hires he makes. Too many have not worked out and that definitely goes on the GM. I’m personally tired of hearing Stevie “keeps things close to the vest”. That fine if you are a winner but, when you are a loser everyone needs to be held accountable. The Walkman trade is the one that should have been explained. Trade a decent defenseman (one of our greatest needs) and a draft pick and get nothing in return. Walman is playing pretty well right now and we basically gave him away getting nothing in return. I’m 73 and a Detroit kid who has been watching the Wings back to when they were on Channel 50. Stevie was a great player and captain but, has far from proven to be the same caliber GM. There needs to be a major shakeup.

  18. It should be! I am sure SY had the ‘team’ talk when he re-signed Dylan. I am sure SY promised to amass a team that could WIN the cup before Larkin retired!
    SY is doing N O T H I N G to fulfil his part of the bargain!!!

  19. Acting out in a presser would be okay if you didn’t completely disappear when the team needed you most, cap!

  20. Definitely a lot of things you can agree with here. But i don’t think the blame should necessarily go either way. The wings have had great potential for a little while now, and with the team we have, we SHOULD be in the playoffs in my opinion. Now the result when you get into playoffs is a whole nother story…

Watching LA, Florida, and Toronto play, you can see why they made it. They dont play like a broken team. Whenever someone isn’t doing well, someone else steps up. This happened at 4nations. While Alex was averaging a point per game, and Larkin was having some moments of greatness, Raymond and Kasper really turned up the jets when we needed them most, so did Kane. What im noticing now is just the lack of puck possession/defense. LA will hound teams all 20 minutes long, idk how these guys do it, they just never run out of breath. We need that kind of hustle and commitment every single game if we wanna win anything for this city.

  21. Larkin shouldn't have gone an entire month w/oa sinfle goal. Larkin was part of an L4 streak leading up to the trade deadline

  22. Neither Detroit or the Canadiens the who made the last wild card slot are Cup contenders. Their rosters are similar in quality. Compare though the two team captains. Nick Suzuki 's team was on the playoff bubble with slim playoff chances yet Suzuki went to his GM and urged him not to be a seller that he and his teammates could make a run. His GM agreed and Suzuki played like an MVP down the stretch carrying his team. They made the playoffs. They're down 2-0 to Washington but have battled with heart. Larkin got demoralized because Yzerman did not bring in a savior at the deadline and who knows how much it spread to others on the roster.
    Tale of two captains
    Moral of the story?
    Be more like Nick

  23. Larkin IS a whiney BIOTCH, but is NOT an NHL captain. Yzerman should trade him so Larkin realizes he’s a SOFT second line center. Yzerman can only make a trade if it improves the team, both short AND LONG TERM.
