NHL Playoffs Round 2 Hurricanes at Capitals and Oilers at Golden Knights

NHL Playoffs Round 2 Hurricanes at Capitals and Oilers at Golden Knights

a break and if Taylor Hall is fresh, healthy, ready to go, I feel like uh his impact will only uh amplify. And you talk about two guys that are going to play on a line it looks like with Logan Stanovven and they’re going to have a defensive assignment tonight because you have to assume that Spencer Carbury is going to target them with one of his top two scoring lines. So that puts a lot on the plate of Kokami. And yes, Barry is notable at times for like he makes good plays, but consistency within games for me is something that he really needs to work on because it’s not just a good play here or there, even if they lead to goals. It’s consistently playing that way. He doesn’t have to be great. He just has to be consistent in what he’s supposed to do. in the calendar year 2025. He has had prolonged stretches of being noticeably physical with bite. Um taking big steps in the faceoff circle. Uh that part didn’t happen. It got a little bit better as the first round wore along. And then being direct when necessary, whether it be in the neutral zone or the offensive zone, and picking his spots with the way he sees the open ice to use the east west portion of the ice surface. And there have been stretches where it has been there for him here in this calendar year. So, it can be there. Um, and really when it comes right down to it, he and the rest of everybody on the Hurricanes roster, I thought before he received that high stick from Mercer that draws the penalty and won the series, I thought Koke and Amy with Carolina uh, taking over the game like they did, I thought his puck management was outstanding. knowing when you can make a play, but knowing when you’ve got to manage it correctly, whether it be at the offensive zone blue line, whether if you’re skating it at some point in the at some part of the offensive zone going back deep with it. I thought his puck management was very positive for me in that game. So, those are all the things that if he is able to meet those ingredients, he’ll be able to locate that consistency that you’re looking for. Trip Tracy. Uh, I appreciate your time, sir. Uh, love doing it live. We’ll talk to you again next. Well, I’ll be listening to you throughout the game, but we’ll do it again next on Thursday for game two, sir. Appreciate it. Thank you, H. Hurricanes and Capitals coming up. Series aside, general manager Eric Tolski’s opted to do some offseason business while his club is still playing high leverage games. We’ve already mentioned the resigning of goalender Frederick Anderson. And a few days before that, it was Taylor Hall inking a three-year deal. Both super team friendly as well. That give Carolina load gives Carolina loads of options to continue to add to the roster if they see fit. And I’m pretty sure that they will. I caught up with Hall in the locker room before they left for DC. First thing I asked him about though was the potential impact of a full week between games. I think as long as it’s the same for both teams, if you’re on an equal playing field, you know, at times too much rest can be a disadvantage and and maybe you start the series slow, but the fact that we’re we’re both in the same boat, I think is uh is fine. And um I’m sure both teams are itching to get at it, but um we’re trying to use the time as as good as we can, get some health, um get some good practices in and and work on some things that that’ll prepare us for Washington. All right, let’s talk about the Capitals and what they bring. We know what they’re about. Big physical team. How do you avoid getting drawn into some of the stuff they want to do? Well, I think, you know, it’s about playing to your strengths as a team and uh you know, we’re we’re a puck pressure team. we’re a team that’s going to um if we’re playing well and and ultimately going to win games, it’s going to be by playing in their end and um you know defending you know really 200 feet from your net. So uh they’re a physical team. Yeah, for sure. Um there’s going to be some big hits like there always is in playoff hockey, but if we can play our game the best we can, which you know I think everyone knows what Hurricanes hockey is, we’ll be fine. So you sign up for three more years. What is it about whether it’s the style of play or the group that appealed to you? Well, I mean, first of first of all, it’s just a really good hockey team. I think there’s a legitimate chance to win here. Um, you know, not just this season, but over the the duration of that of that deal. Um, and really for a long time, you see there’s a really good blend of uh of some veteran players and some younger guys that are only going to improve. Um, and then you know just the the quality of the people in this dressing room has been a lot of fun for me to be around. And uh, you know, we work hard, but we also have fun and really enjoy each other. And um, and then just I mean the living is great. It’s it’s one thing to um to to play in front of fans like we do, but when the weather’s nice outside and it’s a a nice town to live in, um, it checks a lot of boxes. So, I’m I’m really happy. You haven’t dealt with Raleigh, North Carolina’s summer heat, though yet, so it’s next level. Yeah. No, I I you know, I hope we’re here for a bit and I hope um I hope I get to experience that into into the month of June, but um yeah, I I know it’s going to get it’s going to get very hot and maybe that’ll be uh I’ll have a different opinion when that happens, but um it’s been great. Talk to me real quick about uh the the way it sounded during that three goal burst at the start of the second period last. Yeah. Yeah. I got chills honestly when Spetchy scored I got chills just how loud it was and you know I think if you rewind a little bit I just for me I’m not you know I’ve only been here a few months and this is my first playoffs here. Um we were down three nothing and we came out for the second period and and they were going nuts. They were cheering us on. and they were, you know, giving us all their support and and uh there little things like that that uh you know, really make a difference. Um give you a little bit of energy when when things are aren’t going well and and there’s a lot of fan bases in the league where it would be quiet, you know, at the start of a period when they’re down three nothing. So, we’re we’re very fortunate to play in front of our fans. Well, your snipe started it all. Yeah, this absolute snipe. Uh, I mean, I’m I’m just glad I went and poked that in because I thought it was in initially. I didn’t celebrate. I didn’t uh didn’t think I scored the goal, but just good habits. Good habits. Good habits is correct. Hall’s line with Logan Stanovven and Yperry Coin will be asked to shoulder a defensive load in the games in DC. That’s always what is expected of Carolina star Sebastian Ao. And first, congratulations to he and his wife Rosa on the birth of their uh daughter Vivian, born just a couple of days after his two power play goals ended the Devil series. And now it’s on to Washington. And I asked Aaho what he expects from the division winners. It’s going to be hard fought series for sure. Two really good teams in my opinion. It’s going to be a p battle in every aspect of the game. I mean, obviously, whether it’s a physical or special teams or any any aspect, I think it’s going to be a good battle. And I think uh I mean, obviously, both teams know each other pretty well. So, there’s I don’t think they’re going to we’re going to see tons of surprises, but definitely uh high intense hockey games. You know what they’re going to try and do, right? How do you avoid getting drawn into some of the extra stuff that they’re going to come at you? I mean, no, I mean, we go about our business, right? We try to, you know, do our job and play the way we want it. And obviously, it’s not always as easy as it sounds. I mean, obviously there’s another team who tries to do what they want and but yeah, no, I think we’re just we obviously are aware like how they like to play and stuff like that, but uh at the end of the day, we’re just uh as of now, we worry about ourselves and try to get our game go game going. There haven’t been a lot of series where you guys haven’t started here. Uh you’re going to start on the road. What’s the What is the difference? What is the mission in games one and two? No, we’re thinking game one, right? No, no game two yet. I mean, that’s just the she’s trying to win a hockey game. Obviously, that’s that’s the plan to get there and try to get a good game under our belt and win a hockey game. That’s w is the thing that matters at this time of the year. And and obviously whether it’s in the road or home, we uh you know, we want to have that that Irish style of play that we want to we want to play and how we want to look out there and stuff like that. But uh like I said, wins wins wins are the only thing that matters. For a long time, the power play wasn’t clicking. Looks like it is clicking. Now, is there a difference or is it just confidence? Little differences, but at the end of the day, I’ve always said it’s power play at the end of the day, it comes down to executing the plays and passes and shots. Obviously being confidence helps. you know, you score early in the series and then kind of, you know, gain some momentum there, but uh but yeah, some tweaks here and there. You and Andre seemed to be going a lot of shots. Was it uh was in game four you guys combined for 28 shot attempts in the game. When he’s going like that, what kind of a burst of energy does it give to your group? Yeah, he’s a big body. obviously flies out there, plays physical, can score goals. Obviously good player to play with. So obviously a big player for us and obviously uh I assume it’s tough player to play against. All right, final thing, the break, seven days between games. No big deal. No big deal. No, not at all. I mean that’s just uh Yeah, I mean it’s not like we’re in Mexico on the beach. I mean, it’s just uh you know, we’re still, you know, Jarvis didn’t even try. We’re staying sharp here and um yeah, I mean it’s I think it’s uh it’s a good thing if anything. Yeah. Well, we’ll see. We’ll find out. It’s the same really for both teams. I know it’s probably not a huge surprise, but Aaho, who led the Hurricanes with eight points in the five game series win over New Jersey, has 30 goals and 78 points in 79 playoff games. He is also a plus 22. We’ll check the lineups and catch up with Hurricanes legend Justin Williams when the second round Stanley Cup playoff John Hester, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Storm Watch continues on 999. The fan. I think Isabelle has an automatic natural ability to be a leader and it’s really actually impressive and I think it’s great. She has a lot of experience and she’s very humble and has a great personality and a great person to be around. She is articulate. She is smart. She is empathetic. Little bit more reminiscing as I spoke this morning with the first captain ever for Rod Bindore about the playoff series that launched Hurricanes culture. It’s Justin Williams. This is where it all began. This is when when we talk about Carolina Hurricanes culture and the success getting to the playoffs, being successful in the playoffs. This is where it all began. Justin Williams is joining us here on the Adam Gold Show because this is really the start of it, isn’t it? when you go when you think back to the first, you know, playoff appearance in a decade in the spring of 2019, you go into a series on the road at Washington, albeit not as the favorite like this year. Um, what do you remember about that? the run into the playoffs and then the approach to that series, having a great second half of that season to get into the playoffs and to and to finally kind of get over the hump of mediocrity that this team was mired in for so long and uh getting into that playoffs and and having nothing to lose. Uh playing against Washington who were the uh defending cup champions. Um, you know, it was it was uh it was, you know, certainly the underdog scenario. We grasped that. We enjoyed it. Um, but we were playing on such a on such a high from uh the past few months and and really trending in the right direction for a long time and uh I just remember coming into that series having a lot of familiar faces on that other side which I played for Washington. Yeah. Uh a couple years before and and just really telling myself to enjoy it. Justin Williams is joining us here. I’m going to continue the conversation about the series, but there was a moment during that hot streak. It was like 312 and seven uh in the uh the last what three and a half, four months of the season that got you in the playoffs. But I remember a game specifically that I believe was a turning point in the team going from, yeah, we’re good to we, you know, holding holding yourselves to a higher standard. It was a g home game against Tampa Bay. And I think it was like a 3-1 or maybe a 4-1 lead uh in the third period and you got uh power played by the Lightning and they ended up winning the game. And I remember after the game it in years past it would have been we proved that we could play with them and I remember you specifically like being visibly angry that we gave them too too much respect. I felt like that was a turning point. I keep talking to other people about it. I don’t know that I’ve ever asked you about it. Um, do you remember that game at all? Yeah. I mean, you’ve uh you certainly did some research on this one because you really joged my memory uh just in that uh kind of introduction to your question there. And I I I remember that game um certainly like it was yesterday. And we lost that game and I I it was one of my one of my uh few times I I lost it after a game. I I I went in there and and was was visibly um upset and challenged the team and I said okay is not okay. And I I I do remember that. Um and um you know whether or not that was a turning point or not I’m not sure but um you know we had to get off of the off of the um average train and and and be you know confident to compete with these guys and the way we lost that game was just a very upsetting time for me and you know I wanted to let it known that the players that I’m not okay with it and they shouldn’t be either. That was an incredible, incredible time in Hurricanes history. Here’s how they’re going to line up tonight. Jack Rosik, Tyson Jo, UI, Yasa, along with defenseman Alexander Nikesha, Scott Morrow, Riley Stillman, Ty Smith, and goender Spencer Martin. Healthy extras. It’s the reason why Gary Bman won’t move away from this postseason format. Hi everyone, I am Adam Gold and this is an I’m sorry, a second round Stanley Cup playoff edition of Storm Watch brought to you by John Hester Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on 999 the fan. Tonight, a rivalry renewed of sorts as the Canes are in Washington to meet the Capitals in what will be only the second ever playoff matchup with Carolina’s closest division foe. The team that played the role of Washington Generals to Carolina’s Harlem Globe Trotters in the Stadium Series game at Carter Finley Stadium has only been on the other bench one time in the Kane’s 12 playoff seasons. That one was special and we’ll get to that in a sec. It was the great David Burn who asked, “How did I get here?” Well, one week ago at Lenovo Center, a very slow start saw the Devils race out to a three nothing lead in 10 minutes, but Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake, Sebastian got Carolina even. Then after Nico Heir gave the Devils the lead again, Andre Fetchnikov broke the sound barrier uh with a goal that put the Hurricanes um uh Anyway, Andre Fetchikov made it 3-3. Then Nikico Isha scored. I’ll get this right in a second. And then Sebastian Aaho tied it again with a five on three power play goal. It was Aaho’s power play goal ultimately that won it in overtime. It was his second overtime series deciding goal in the career of AO. The last sent Nashville home in May of 2021. And now it’s back to where it all began. the first series in a run of seven straight playoff seasons for the Canes and head coach Rod Bindore. And if you need a memory jogging moment, here’s some numbers. Uh Canes trailed the Caps two nothing in the first period. AO scores short-handed to get Carolina on the board. Tavo Terrainan after uh Washington extended back to 3-1. He scores late in the second period to make it 3-2. Jordan Stall with the goal early in the third to get Carolina even. And then it was Justin Williams across in front and Brock McInn knocked it home and the Hurricanes were off and running into the second round of the playoffs. It was the series that launched Hurricanes culture into the lexicon, I guess, of Carolina Hurricanes hockey. All right, we’ll be back with lineups and more after these words from your local stations on the Carolina Hurricanes radio network. This is the story of the one. Uh, and goender Spencer Martin. Those are your healthy extras. Now to the lineups. Sebastian Aaho, Jackson Blake, Andre Spetchnikov. That’s how we ended the Devils series. Jordan Stall, Jordan Martinook, and Seth Jarvis. Yes. Sperry coat with Taylor Hall and Logan Stanovven. That’s going to be an interesting line to keep an eye on as I would imagine Washington will target them with a very stern defensive assignment. Wouldn’t be surprised to see William Kerier end up there. Jen, Eric Robinson, and William Kerier right there. On the back end, it’ll be Jacob Slavven and Brent Burns, Dmitri Orof and Jaylen Chatfield, Shane Gostaspar, and Shawn Walker. Frederick Anderson back in the blue tonight. 3-1 in the playoffs, 159 goals against average, and a 936 save percentage in the opening round against the Devils until he was knocked out of the series by Team Omire. A win and a shootout loss to the Capitals in his last five starts of the regular season. Logan Stank, I’m sorry, uh Logan Thompson, not Logan Stanovven, Logan Thompson will be in goal for Washington. like Anderson, he he too was knocked out of a playoff game, but he came back and played in the Capital Series clincher against Montreal. Interesting note about this series, each team has five players who played for them against the other team in 2019. Alexander Ovuchkin, Tom Wilson, Lars Eller, Nick Dow, and John Carlson all played against Carolina. Dimmitri Orof was there, now here. Trevor Van Reamedike was here now there and Sebastian Aaho, Jordan Stall, Jordan Martinook, Andreset and Jacob Slavven. Five each for each team plus one team that traded allegiances. How about that? It is funny. I found that hysterical. By the way, one more game tonight. It’ll be Edmonton and Vegas in game one of their Western Conference semi-final series there. Mike Maniscalo and Trip Tracy. They’ll have the call. Canes caps after these words from your local stations on the Carolina Hurricanes radio network. Want to wow mom this Mother’s Day? Game one of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs alongside Trip Tracy. Mike Vaniskeo here in the booth with our technical tandem. Pat Mi here with us in our nation’s capital. Rusty Helzer back in Raleigh. trip. We can go back to 2019 and yes, there are some players that have carryover, but this is all about 2025 and what do the Carolina Hurricanes need to do here tonight. You know, you look at uh last night, the first game of the second round between Toronto and Florida. Both teams fresh, but Toronto was able to get to their game first. So, Carolina coming off of a week break, Washington one day less. You know, the energy is going to be there, Mike. Which team right from the get-go is going to get to their game. Will there be any potential rust? That’s something to really key in on early. Well, Jordan Stall starts it for the Canes. And here we go. The second round of the playoffs are underway. Carolina will get to the draw. It’ll be batted along the near boards into the cap zone. Knocked out. Batted right back in by Chatfield. Canes have to tag up. That gives Washington a chance for a free escape. But this is going to be an early icing on the Caps. 19 seconds into this one already a huge hit. Jordan Martin on Sandine the Washington defenseman. It was oh about seven or eight feet in inside the Washington blue line right through the body. So the first early finish goes to Jordan Martin and the Carolina Hurricanes. Now it’ll be Mark Chancowski out with Eric Robinson and William Ker. That is a line that’s got a little bit of size to them as that has been leading up to this the week off for the Canes and six days for Washington about how heavy this series will be. Janowski wins it. Puck comes across for Gostas pair. That’s blocked up high. He’s getting the boots of that was Brandon Duane. Haynes will get a chance to carry this one back in as it knocked out of the cap zone. White around for Robinson. He’s a new dad and so is Sebastian Aaho. We congratulate him. But the Canes right now looking to score as this drive by Kerier just inside the blue line deflects. Jenkowski wants to make a play back but Washington gets a stick. They’ll clear it. Kanees will go cross corner and make a change. Two quality blocks in the first minute of play. First from Du and then Roy as Carolina gets to some offensive zone time. Now it’s Trevor Van Reamdikeke behind his own net. He’ll play this one off the boards. A little too far for Dupal, but now he’ll be able to come across to it and it’ll be knocked just wide as Carolina survives that offering as Wilson got free. Burns on the back check. Just got a piece and avoided a penalty on the stick. That was a good pass from Dubois. Now AO in the seam fornikov rolling puck. Couldn’t settle it down wide of the net. Burns keeps it in at the right point. That shot blocked, deflected right back. Second offering is blocked and this will be kicked out of the zone and now it’ll be turned over. AO with it. He’ll step into the Washington zone. Drop it back for Blake. Blake, he’ll peel away from John Carlson. He’ll go along the far boards, the left wing boards. Intended to get it to Fetchnikov. That’s intercepted. Washington clears just for the moment. Chatfield, he’ll get it up for Blake. Blake wants to center it. He’ll move it around behind the net. Playing it around Alexia into the corner it goes. Stro with it up for Wilson. Wilson’s taken off the puck and the Canes will come up with it. Wired around the end boards. Van Reamedikeke is given a shove by coach Kiami. Now back here Chatfield’s offering that’ll be deflected out of play by Bavilier over the glass into the netting. Well, the Hurricanes have been able to they haven’t gotten any chances out of that. Full credit to Washington with a couple of those key blocks that I mentioned. establish offensive zone time, but the best chance of the game in the early going was a two-on-one by Dubois in company. And Brent Burns turned and found Tom Wilson at the last second to disrupt him just enough. Otherwise, it’s probably one- nothing Washington. And it’s those little plays that by the time we move on to the third period, rattle in the back of your mind, but it’s a huge moment right now for the Kings on that back check. And now Offensive zone draw and Washington is wanting to see their man waved out of the dot. Zeller was not too happy about it. Mapani takes it work its way to the corner. Same Dean tries to play it for Leonard. This will be deflected out and Ryan Leonard the rookie. He is looking now a chance for Washington as Burns wanted to bank it off the boards to bank right out in front of Anderson but nobody there for Washington. Sand Dean retreats into his own zone. His pass misses everybody but wouldn’t have been icing. So Anderson will leave it there. Slavven he quickly gets this one up for Hall. Taylor Hall drop this one into the slot turning with it. Stan Coven looking to go back now. A chance there for Chatfield. That’ll be knocked just wide of the net. Nice defensive play there from Miaani. So that puck was headed across the ice from Stan Kovven who had made made a nice handsy play at the top of the circle. He has that poked away from his stick by Martinook and Carolina looking to come the other way. Nice play by Stall to Martin. Martinook shoots and a save made by Thompson. It’ll be kept in by the Canes worked back behind the net. Jarvis will come with it. He’ll leave it there for Stall to the right point. It’s Chatfield across for Orlo. His shots blocked and it’ll work its way all the way back into the Kane zone. Anderson helps it out and Chatfield avoids a big hit as Wilson took a run at him and Wilson had it earlier. Finished Dmitri Orof. Orlof absorbed it. Now Burns looking for a deflection out in front. Got it by Martinook but tipped just wide. Nice play here by Jarvis in the corner. Sandine turns. Can’t clear it. kept in there by Slavven and then this drive is tipped and poked over the glass into the netting. 1608 left here in the first period. Well, a story line in the series against New Jersey was former teammates that were then and now opponents when you think about the list and Tom Wilson, Demetri Orof won a Stanley Cup together and Orlof was able to read the tea leaves deep in his own end, not only absorb the hit but quickly transition the puck. And then Tom Wilson was able to finish Deh Jaylen Chadfield at the Carolina Blue Line. But both Dmitri and Jaylen were able to make plays in the process. And it it does help when you see it coming where you can absorb it a little bit more. I asked Dmitri before we took off for Washington trip, you know, if he was going to go out with any of his former teammates, and he goes, “No, not in the playoffs.” It totally changes, you know, and and I thought Dmitri had a heck of a first round. really good. He had on a Don Johnson tie. I was talking to him with Don Johnson like suit yesterday on the travel day. I said, “Demetri, are you familiar with Miami Vice?” And I’m too old for that. The Kes will win this offensive zone draw. Shot by Gostas Bear doesn’t get through, but nice work done by Blake into the corner for Svetchnikov. He’ll play it behind the net and this will be wrapped out and Gostas Bar will scoop it up just inside the Kane zone. And a chance for Carolina with some room. AO the new dad drops it for Blake. Blake, he risks one that gets to the side of Thompson’s net. That’ll be deflected and up the left wing boards. Here comes Washington. A chance for Brandon Duane. He’ll be taken off the puck. Duhane grabbing his face after he and Walker got into a collision. And Carolina’s been tight with their gap so far early defensively. There Walker tight gap on Duane prior to it. Or Olaf and Chadfield that we mentioned. Now Burns threads the needle. Kane get it to center ice. Jankowski backhands one in. But Carolina’s offside with 1508 left here. And still looking for a goal here at Capital One Arena in game one of the second round. The best chance again still in transition on that back check from Burns on Wilson. And Wilson comes out with the physicality that you know he’s going to have. The Hurricanes have had some not 5 minutes in just about some good offensive zone time, but the Caps to their credit have been able to get in the shooting lanes. Face off at center ice going to be fought for and one by Carolina. Burns give this one a hard rim off the end boards. Sand Dean will get to it. Robinson with a good stick. Janowski with a better one to keep it in just inside the blue line. Now Robinson at the side of the net pushed out in front. Save made by Thompson. Rebound comes free. Slavven shakes it off. Thompson with the save. Rebound kicks out and Washington will corral it. Now another turnover. Another low drive and a save made by Thompson. Jankowski to the rebound. Taylor Hall had a great opportunity as Washington fell to clear. And Yako Vet can spend his entire shift. He’s still on the ice in his own end. What a shift by the Janowski line and Logan Thompson. Two excellent saves. Thompson, by the way, 4-1 this postseason. 2.23 goals against average. 923 save percentage as the Canes are able to get this puck back into the Washington zone. Martinook trying to find Jarvis. That’s deflected away. Good stick there by Van Reamdike. This one will trickle out just over the Washington blue line. Kes will send it back in. Thunderous hit delivered by Stall. And this one is battle for in the corner. It’ll find its way to Martinup. He’ll work it around. Chatfield will read the play. He’ll take a hit to keep it deep into the corner to the left of Logan Thompson. And now Stall will find its way from Martin. Van Reamike will lose it as he throws it around the boards, but Orlock intercepted. Now Chatfield with the read all the way up. He will take a couple of whacks, but get this one behind the net along the endboards. He keeps kicking it around. Now Chatfield turns and that goes to the top of the crease. Rebound kept in by Jarvis. Martinook lets it go for Chatfield. Chatfield takes a hit from Mapani. Stall set the tone for that whole shift with that big time hit on Leonard, the rookie out of Boston College. Oh, the Canes are doing a great job here in the first seven minutes of hemming in Washington in their own zone. Now, a penalty coming up as the puck is touched and we’re going to get a high sticking call. Both teams have touched the puck trip. I I think it’s going to be No, it’s going to be on Carolina. They’re checking. We’ll tell you all about it. 1258 left here in the first period. Carolina will be short-handed when we return here on the Hurricanes Radio Network. To us, every moment matters. Kanees will be short-handed first time here in this one as Sebastian Aaho in the box for high sticking. Our officials trip are Wes McCauley and TJ Luxmore. TJ Luxmore is the one that made the call. It was at the blue line or the goal line deep in the Washington end. AO’s stick rode up on Alexia, the Washington defenseman. Lexif is wearing a full ittech, not a visor. And this feels like already an important moment here for this Carolina penalty kill. Why do I say it? Because the Canes have had the edge in the first seven minutes and change of this first period. Frederick Anderson has not faced a shot. This commercial break that we’re just returning from, Mike, he was really active in his crease, mimicking movements because he knows he’s going to feel the puck in all likelihood here. This is a great opportunity for the Caps because Carolina’s had the edge in the initial stages of this first period. And there’s a bit of an ice issue in the Kane zone in the slot between the rings. That’s been sorted out. Kane’s mental league killers in the first round against New Jersey, 15 for 15. Only team that didn’t allow a power play goal. Washington’s power play. Three for 13 against Montreal. That’s ninth in the first round. One of the 18 teams that were there. Washington works this one out in front and a chance and a save made there as getting across was Anderson. An early opportunity there. Jacob Chickan out in front now. Stro with it in the slot. Has it knocked away by Martinup. settle down. That drive bounces off of Chickran and that will go out of play with 1232 remaining in the first and a minute 34 remaining in the penalty kill. Good stick by Burns as that shot was being taken and he had the the ramp of his blade to put it up into the netting above the glass in the Carolina zone. Stro who had an outstanding first round for Washington, nine points. He won the draw against Stall. He’ll take it again here on the other side against Janowski. Stro had seven assists in the five games against Montreal and that seven assists total is tied for fifth in the postseason. He’ll get booted from the faceoff here. Wilson comes in. Big win here needed from Janowski. Jankowski gets it and he’ll get it out and it’ll be scooted away. And here comes Carolina into the zone. Short-handed Janowski with a little low roller that Thompson kicks away. It was Janowski taking the place of Sebastian Aaho alongside Seth Jarvis on this penalty kill. He gives you so many options including penalty killing when one of your penalty killers like Aaho’s in the box. Now Washington needs to find their way in the Kane zone. They’re going to be worked across. Wilson gets it in deep into the corner. Burns takes a shoulder from Wilson. Kept in by Washington as Carlson. They go to the corner. Get it back. There’s Ovuchkin out in front. Redirected and Anderson makes the save. First save of the game. I don’t think Freddy got credited for an earlier stop. This Ovetkin one-time I believe hit Wilson which made the save on the glove side bringing that glove into the body. Even better. Ovetkin in the office that he’s occupied for his legendary career. Fired away and I believe it hit Wilson. Wilson actually got a stick on it. It actually broke the shaft of his stick. Such a heavy ovetkin blast. That one-time was and Anderson, his first stop of the game was a real quality one. 51 seconds remaining in the high sticking penalty to Sebastian Aaho. 1150 to go here in the opening period of game one of this second round playoff matchup. I think we’re checking on the clock right now. Yeah, slight delay and you know Anderson is able to make that close redirection save off of Wilson’s shaft and then really good rebound control as he left his feet. But didn’t get close to the goal line, but it could have excellent save. That’s a credit to Frederick Anderson. Now this draws one and a drive by Carlson and that one is seen the whole way. Anderson bodies it down and he’ll get a whistle. boy on on Stro’s power side. So far, he’s won two draws clean and both against Jordan Stall. That’s not an easy thing to do. He’s going to take it again against the Hurricanes captain Stro against Stall. And this time, the Canes will get the better of it as it pops high. And Martinook claws it down and will sweep it in. You know what Martin did there? He anticipated that Stro, who’s been good early in the faceoff to mention, would lose the win the draw and Martin turned it into a win. Now Stro has some room into the Kane zone, has it knocked away. Good stick there by Burns before he could get the shot off. Now Ovetkin to Wilson. It’ll be bumped free. Side of the net it goes. Chicken with it. Chicken top of the right faceoff circle now. Back up for Chicken. His shot blocked by Slavven. Burns will get to the loose puck and will roll this all the way back into the Washington zone. And there’ll be five seconds left here on the power play as Sandine gets it. He’ll drop it back. Last rush here for Conor Mcichael. Now Dubois has it knocked away by Chatfield and the power play is over. Kane’s penalty killers do the job. Now you got to clear. Sand Dean keeps it in side of the net. Good defense as it’s kicked away. The Canes trying to clear and they will. Or boxed out and then used his right skate to kick that puck for an easy clear. That’s almost an extension of Washington’s power play. You keep talking about that where really a power play isn’t over until you can clear the zone or get a whistle and you get through this kill. It looks like now and Anderson’s now in the game when he hadn’t been. So that’s why I just thought it was pivotal. Two shots on that power play for Washington as Carolina will now pick up where they left off at even strength getting the puck in the cap zone but this one will be rimmed around now to center ice but no further. Gaines will get to it. Will be chipped at just in front of the Washington blue line and this will be dumped in. And that play was made by Pavilier. Anderson way out of his net but able to play it to safety as the Canes break out across center ice. Seeing the hit was Walker. He took it as it was coming across from Duane. Ke’ll reload and send this one back in. Matt Roy is knocked off the puck. Robinson comes up with it. Back to Walker. Top of the circle. That drive is blocked up high. Excellent block there by Bavilier. He has changed a little bit his game now. A long drive put on by Gus Despair and Thompson will catch and hang on. 923 left here in the first period. You know, Mike, the Caps have seven blocked shots in the first 10 minutes. Du Hes had a couple. So the Hurricanes have to make sure easier said than done getting it by that first guy as they’ve had some good looks and Washington has been able to get in those shooting lanes. Face off to the left of Logan Thompson. The Canes are moving left to right on your radio dial, iPad, iPhone, or however you’re consuming is broadcast as Carolina will work this one out in front. Setchnikov threw it into the front of the net and then it was swept at there and an opportunity for Aaho but knocked away. Washington trying to clear. They’ll just get it over the blue line. Chin has it taken away by Aaho. One stride inside the Kane zone and coming back the other way. It’s Carolina Burns gains center ice. Bounce this one off of Chron around the boards. Loose puck. Fetchnikoff will get to it. Slavven’s ready to let it go. Save made by Thompson. Now Fetchnikov from a long angle and that’ll be caught and hung on to by Logan Thompson and a little pushing and shoving along the far boards after the shot by Fetchnikov. This is why I like Fetchnikov on the line with Aaho and Blake because he can give that line some protection like just after this whistle when Wilson comes in to provide the lip service that he does and he’s still jawing with Fetchnikov. So prior to that, Slavven has had two good looks. Uh, you know, through traffic to get shots through. Sebastian Ao, congratulations. His daughter, the great Viven AO, born on last Friday. Hopefully Viven and her letter B will be V for victory. Now the Canes will win this draw as a chance by Gaspar rings off the post to the left of Lingren. You could hear that all the way at the National Mall. And now a chance for Carolina. Good for check behind the net. Puck comes free. Martinook. He’ll take a hit but get it back for Walker. Walker through traffic. That’ll be deflected just wide. Jarvis will come up with it. He takes a hit but able to move the puck into the corner. Sandine can’t clear it. Walker will keep it in. Into the corner it goes. Good work here by Shawn Walker to fight for it. Sand Dean will just flip this one all the way around. It’ll be waved at by Proise. 6’6 of Alexi Prous. He’ll get this back in the Kane zone, but Stall hustles back and this one will be deflected just outside the Kane’s blue line. And a good play there by Jarvis. And now a giveaway as Stall will come up with it, but he’s at the end of his shift. Alexia gave it away just inside the Washington blue line. Ross’s Bear had Thompson beat after winning that draw. Hit the post halfway up on the blocker side. Now Bilier will leave this for Stro. Drone shot deflects off of coilier behind the net for Van Reamike. His shot doesn’t get through. Blocked out in front by co. Loose puck works its way for Stro. Back to the right point. Van Reamike his shot. It’ll be deflected and off the near boards it comes. And Carolina can deflect this. Stan Coven and Hall get it deep into the Washington zone. Co can he’ll let it go back for Hall to the point. Walker with a shot. Thompson makes the save and the rebound kicks out for Leonard. Leonard, he’s got his skates moving. He tries to work from a sharp angle. Save made as Anderson stood tall in the blue paint. Under seven minutes remaining here in this first period. Now here’s a chance for Taylor Hall out in front. That is going to be deflected away. Canes keep it in. Worked around the board. Sandine will get to it. Pestered there by Stanovven. He’ll just send this deep in his own zone. As Stan Copen gets off prior early in his shift, he got the puck at the Washington goal line, went low to high to involve the defense. If you do more of that, you’re going to be cooking. Have you liked what you’ve seen? Oh, now a bouncing puck that comes in and Thompson has to play it. And this is going to be one of those treat it like it’s an icing as Thompson played it from the other side of center ice. To answer your question, yes, I have liked what I’ve seen so far. important early kill because I think the Hurricanes have had the better of the chances. You you where Aaho is going to take this draw to the right of Logan Thompson. This is where you won the draw clean and Goss bear hits the post halfway up on the blocker side mid blocker as I like to call it. That might be a good shot location on Thompson in this series. A little bit different than what you picked out from Jacob Marstrom earlier, but we’ll see if the teams can take advantage as they did on the Devil’s Net Mer in that series. Now AO keeps it in. Burns flings it out in front. That’ll be blocked before it can get through for Thompson. Work back. Burns will have it at his blue line. He’ll leave it for Fetchnikov to Blake. Blake. Ian Eller will meet just inside the Washington blue line. And Fetchnikov reaches for it. Ian Carlson got entangled. And now back the other way. It’s Sand Dean. He’s taken off of his skates. Caps fans want a penalty, but Sand Dean put himself onto the ice as Carolina trying to take this one out of the zone. Worked quickly and out. And honestly, right now, Trip, outside of the power play, Washington has had not a lot of time in the Carolina offensive zone. We’re in the offensive zone for Washington. Keep your eye on Dubois in this game. I thought when we were here late in the regular season, he was the Cap’s best player that particular night. He has really turned into, I think, the player that he could be that people in Winnipeg and Los Angeles were thinking he could. Of course, coming here, you don’t have to be the pressure being the man. Now, a penalty will be taken by Washington as behind the net. Or was taken down and the Hurricanes are going to get a power play with 509 left here in the first. Take us to commercial first Carolina Washington holds. That’s Wes McCaulay. Everybody get yourselves ready because you get a power play going your first crack of the series. It’s big time. That’s Du Hane in the box and the Canes on the power play. And if the Canes put the biscuit in the basket on the power play, you get a freebo biscuit at participating. Bojangles tomorrow morning. Bojangles. It’s bow time. Duh in the box in a huge opportunity for Carolina here. Dmitri Orof, who’s had a good first period, drew the penalty, and Aaho, I thought, who’s going to take this draw, had his best faceoff series of his playoff career in the first round. The Jeans win the draw. It’ll be dropped back by Jarvis. He will take the return feed, but let it go to Gostberry Perry. The Canes in the series against the Devils, six for9 moving the puck around. And that was fourth of the 16 teams in the postseason. Now Gostas Bear hands it up top. Jarvis wants it. He’s skating with it. Rotates it over for Gostas Bear. Gostasar in the top of the right faceoff circle trying to thread the needle looking for Aaho. Now Aaho will come up with it along the far boards. He’ll take it to the left point across for Jarvis. Now back for Aaho. Kane’s working it around Gostas Bear now. AO from the high slot that doesn’t get through. Jarvis to the rebound. He’ll get it to Gostas Bear. Svetchnikov right back to Gostas Bear along the left wing boards. Now Jarvis with it on the right wing boards as it’s a cross ice pass. He’ll peel it back for Rajo. He’ll drift into the right faceoff circle. He’ll take a return feed from Setchnikov. Now Aaho with it. high slot and that’ll be deflected over the glass into the netting with 49 seconds left on the man advantage. That’s a heck of a shift by former LA King Matt Roy. He came up with a big block on AO’s blast from the middle and then at the end of what was a pretty long penalty killing shift, a good stick play to get the whistle. He’s been a really good addition here for the Washington Capitals on their back end along with Jacob Chick in terms of firstear guys. Coach Ki waved out of the circle with 49 seconds left here on this man advantage. Stan Kov will take it against Mcichel. Be working the corner to the left of Thompson. Washington will get to a loose puck. It’s Conor Mcichael. Mcichael makes a move and then loses an edge, but Washington keeps it moving into the Kane zone and an opportunity. Was swatted there by Prous, but he didn’t get anything on it. the Canes will storm back into the capital zone. Burns with it inside the blue line. 25 seconds left on the man advantage. Burns will take the feed from Coach Ki across for Oh, and a BB right on. Rebounds available as Thompson made the save. Couldn’t get to the rebound. Coach Ki with it. Back up for Burns. Burns through traffic just wide. Rebound. Coach Kiami. He’ll reload it for Burns. Burns back for Coach Kammy looking for an angle. Doesn’t get through. Rebound to Hall. 4 seconds left here on the power play. Hall for Burns, but it’ll be tipped just enough, I believe, by Proise to get past Burns. And the penalty expires. Hall’s one-time re got a lot of it. It had a sound like it hit the shaft of Thompson stick. Building goes crazy after that kill. Washington has now blocked 13 shots here in 17 minutes of the first period. 13. Well, now it’s one of these big bump up shifts as Carrie joins Stall and Martin. And now a nice play by Chatfield at his own blue line. And he’ll get it to Martin. Martinook centers one. Thompson will get a stick to it. Rebound out for Chatfield. His shot going just wide. He was looking to mimic what he did in the opening round series against New Jersey. Score the first goal. Another block shot. That one right in front of the net. Now Stro, he comes into the Kane zone trying to feed that one back for Dubois, but that’ll be knocked away. Carolina will chip this one through. And things are getting a little bit chippy as Kerier was run at, but he had a little extra shove. And nothing coming of that as Carolina will roll this one in on Thompson and he’ll cover it with a catching glove. 207 left here in this first period. The Hurricanes have had a territorial edge and they keep going back to these shot blocks. You just have to find a way to either get it to the net a hair quicker or get it by that first guy. Now we are in the the zone where I thought Carolina took some big steps in the first round. Not giving up late period goals. You get this thing a minimum of 000 with just over two to play to the intermission. You’re going to feel good about it. Crucial time. Stanovven actually got a stick trip on that hall offering and it rode up the paddle of Thompson as we resume. Now Fetchnikov and that one goes off the head of Thompson. Well, that was a really good set faceoff play. Fetchnikov was the winger on the wall and he came way up top. Got it to the net quickly and Thompson makes a nice save with his nugget. Some of these shots catching guys right between the eyes of we’re thinking about the health of Stallars and Toronto. Caught one last night in the first period. A wins another draw cleanly for Gosses there. He’ll shake it across. He’ll get it to Walker. His shot and a piece of that was taken by Duane. Carolina to the rebound. Walker at the right point. Duhane gets in front of the pass, but Walker’s able to bat it back into the corner. That allows Fetchnikov to finish Sand Dean, which he does with a heavy hip check there along the boards as the puck pops in between the blue lines. Carolina will come up with it. Here comes Blake into the Washington zone. He’ll drop it back. AO’s offering. That’ll be swatted away by Thompson. Nick Dow will get to it. Play this one up for Roy into the Kane zone. Brother back for the defenseman and Anderson who has not been called upon much here in the first with a massive save with a minute 18 left here in the opening period on Matt Roy. That was the quiet nature of Frederick Anderson. Roy who had been a big part of Washington’s kill a few minutes ago. Got the puck at his own blue line. Got it to the outside. You get a threeon two and then he drives the middle. Always talk about the middle lane drive. and he receives the the back end of the give and go believe from Duane on his backhand and a quick release. If Freddy gets antsy, not quiet and calm, that’s a much more dangerous shot. Good save. 78 seconds left here in the opening period. Shots 13 to five for Carolina. That’s always subject to change now. And this face off to the right of Anderson’s won by the Kings Burns. He works this one free. Good play there by Jarvis. Deflected out in front. Thompson has to play it. Can’t clear. Second offering by Slavven. That goes off the glass. Bounces back in front, but Thompson will snag it with a glove. And the Canes will get an offensive zone draw with 65 seconds left. Do you know who have been Carolina’s most too dangerous offensive defenseman so far? Slavven and Gost Bear. And when I’ve been talking about Washington’s block shot, Slavven received that puck. It was a bouncing puck. Just over a minute to play. So choppy ice conditions. He got it to the net very quickly. It just missed. That’s how you avoid the blocks that Washington’s had. Faceoff will be in the right face off circle for Carolina. Coach KMI will take it with Stankov and Hall. That was going to be Co. He’s been asked to leave. So Logan Stankov will take this one. He’ll win it clean after Burns. Burns tried to shake one through but he was bodied up high and couldn’t was blocked away. Now Burns fed away. Dames had about four blocks it feels like. He’s been tremendous. Burns wasn’t able to settle the puck that gave the winger Dame all the time he needed to come up with another block. This one will be angled off of the boards back into the Kane zone. Hustling after Slavven. He’ll have to play it away from Dow and does Burns. They go rink wide and a chance for co. He has that knocked off of his stick just outside of the cap’s blue line by Wilson. But then Washington with a misfire. They’ll throw it back deep in their own zone. Chicken chased by Stanovven. 22 seconds left here in this opening period. Stro, he works this one for Wilson. Wilson will go shoulderto-shoulder with Chatfield. Warov helps it around. Not out. Low drive doesn’t get through. Still kept in. Deflected back. Sand Dean with it. 9 seconds left in the period. Stro side of the net stepped into by Orloff. 3 seconds left. Puck goes behind the Kane’s net. Shatfield will settle it down. And that’s how the first period comes to a close. Critical end of the period there. Orlof was really good. At one point his dear friend Alex Hovetkin tried to line him up. There are no friends in the playoffs. Oh no, there are not. And then Orlof made a really good stick play on a cross-sized pass. So you get 000 to the intermission. I think Carolina played a fine first period. I agree with you on that one, partner. Adam Gold inside our network studios on the Lenovo intermission report brought to you by Lenovo, official technology provider of the Carolina Hurricanes. We are without a goal, but there was plenty to plenty to take in in the first period. Each team had a power play. Each team’s penalty kill looked pretty good. best maybe the best scoring chance on either power play came off the stick of Alexander Ovetchkin. Not that the shot was so difficult, but Tom Wilson right in front of Frederick Anderson. Anderson had to fight through traffic and make a save. Wilson uh was down. It caused a mistake. Uh Hurricanes had a couple of really good scoring chances. Shane Gostas Bear hit the post. Andre Spetchnikov hit a crossbar. Uh there was a good deflection in front on the power play by Logan Stanovven. Uh and it made Logan Thompson have to make a very good save. Jordan Martinook had a scoring chance uh in the first half of the first period. I think the best scoring chance all night though came about a minute in when Tom Wilson uh took a pass or almost took a pass from Pierre Luke Dwis, but the pass was just too far out in front of him. He would have had a gradea chance to make it one- nothing early. Carolina in the period outshooting Washington 135. The attempts are almost 3 to one in favor of Carolina but no goals on the board. I am Adam Gold. Easy for me to say first period highlights are are brought to you by Kia in a scoreless first period. But man, if this pass was just a little bit better from Pierre Luke Dubois, who knows what Tom Wilson would have done with it. Van Reamedike behind his own net and he’ll play this one off the boards. A little too far for Dupal, but now he’ll be able to come across to it and it’ll be knocked just wide as Carolina survives that offering as Wilson got free. Yeah, Carolina pretty fortunate that the pass was not on target. Logan Thompson had to come up with one on Eric Robinson and company Robinson with a good stick. Jane Kowsky with a better one to keep it in just inside the blue line. Now Robinson at the side of the net pushed out in front. Save made by Thompson. Rebound comes free. Slavven shakes it off. Thompson with the save. Rebound kicks out and Washington will corral it. Now another turnover. Another low drive and a save made by Thompson. Jenowski to the rebound. Taylor Hall had a great opportunity as Washington fell to clear. All right. Now Washington gets the first power play. Alexander Ovuchetkin in his office. Carlson. They go to the corner back. There’s Ovuchkin out in front. Redirected and Anderson makes the save. First save of the game. I don’t think Freddy got credited for an earlier stop. This Ovetkin one-time I believe hit Wilson which made the save on the glove side. Bringing that glove into the body even better. Yeah, it was a great save. Uh best save of the period for either goalender. Uh Logan Thompson didn’t make a save here, but he did get some help from his friend. SIP on the Lenovo intermission report brought to you by Lenovo, official technology provider of the Carolina Hurricanes, Walt Ruff, hurricanes.com content maestro, wizard of the keyboards in DC. All right, period number one, 20 minutes. What do you think? Thought it was a great start, AG, especially for the road team here in game number one. They didn’t give the crowd a whole lot to cheer about. I thought they dominated possession. They played hurricanes hockey as we’re used to seeing. And although there was no score, I think you absolutely take a start like that 10 out of 10 times. Oh, no question about it. You know what you would have like I thought the power play was a little bit cautious. I didn’t see a lot of snapping the puck around, but uh I also I’m not against that. Uh as this team I mean neither teams played for a week, so I think uh avoiding any big mistakes was probably a pretty good uh way to play the first period. uh your thoughts about what we saw on special teams from Carolina. Yeah. Well, in a way, I think you’re okay with making it out 000, right? I I would agree with your assessment that perhaps a little bit too slow, a little bit too passive on the Carolina Hurricanes power play. On the other side of the coin, you just never want to see Alex Ovkin’s unit out there on the other side. Uh they had to see him once and they found it out alive. So, I think you’d consider that a success no matter what. All right, let’s talk about the fact that Freddy Anderson probably made his best save of the period. Maybe the best save of either goalender in the first period uh on Ovetchkin’s one-time. Uh Tom Wilson certainly didn’t make it any easier. Yeah, that uh that got rather confusing there for a second because you saw Ovkin in his office and then all of a sudden you saw Freddy kind of scrambling behind the crease and uh broken stick out in front. didn’t really know what happened there at first, but upon seeing the replay a couple times, you’re right, he did have to come up with it, and that’s uh that’s not a position any goalender wants to be in, but he found a way to keep it out. So, I think Freddy Anderson will take that. Obviously, not overly tested a ton at five on five, but uh that means that the group in front of him is doing their job. Well, rough hurricanes.com content maestro, wizard of the keyboards is joining us from DC. Canes and Capitals without a goal. Uh obviously you you look to Aaho, Speettoikoff, and Blake who I thought were pretty good in the first period. Maybe AO’s best moments were uh defensively breaking up plays, but they have a big matchup. That’s a big forward line that they are dealing with centered by Pierre Luke Dubis. Yeah, that was huge. They’re going to have to be good, right? I mean, a lot of times when we’re talking about matchups, we’re talking about Jordan Stallin who he has the defensive responsibility of covering. But I’m glad you brought up Sebastian because he is just as if not even more important on that side of things in this series. And we found out uh the way that things are going to shake down at least for while the Canes are on the road here in games one and two. But you’re right, I thought he was good and I thought at five on five really all four lines were rolling for Carolina which is the way that they want to and need to play. Uh but we all know that as much as Rod Brenmore does not want to label his line, Sebastian is the top center. And if he’s rolling, that’s a good indication that things are going top to bottom. So, I’m I’m I was just looking at Spencer Carbury, what which matchups he wants, and he wanted the Ovetkin line out against Janowski, Robinson, and Kerier. And that’s all well and good except that Rodkin just not play them all that much. Uh so we might not have seen a ton of Ovetchkin in the first period apart from the uh the power play. Yeah. And and I think that that’s a trade-off you’re more than willing to make, right? Especially because I thought that the Jenowski line was actually pretty good in the attacking end on a couple shifts there in that period. So, uh again, you need everybody going top to bottom and if that’s the way things are going to shake down, obviously a heightened sense and uh a need of responsibility from those three guys. I thought they were pretty good. And uh if you uh if that is the case of how things are going to be and we don’t get to see them a whole heck of a lot, well then uh maybe that’s just the way it’s going to have to be for a night like tonight. Yeah. And I think we’re also going to see Obie’s line out against uh Ko and EM Hall and Logan Stangov. That’s Walt Ruff Hurricanes.com content maestro wizard of the keyboards waltruff on Twitter. Uh, I hope to not talk to you again later, but because that means we have uh overtime, but uh I’m of course planning out the rest of your evening, but I’ll talk to you Thursday. Tune in to NHL Unscripted with Burken Deers and iHeart Radio app or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back. We get ready to start the second period at Capital One Arena in this game number one of the second round playoff matchup of the Hurricanes and Capitals alongside Trip Tracy. I’m Mike Maniscal for our technical tandem. Pad Mi here with us in the booth in Washington DC. Rusty Helzer back in Raleigh and first period if you’re the Canes you did everything you wanted except put one past Logan Thompson trip. Yeah, a couple of uh extractions. Washington Miapani their forward plays on the Ovuchkin line only played 2 minutes and 29 seconds. A deflection that caught him looked like in the face from Orlof Orof good defensively. He’s back so they have the full aotment. Duh. four block shots. Roy three, Aaho 5-0 in the faceoff circle. Jordan Stall 4-1. So, a good edge in the faceoff department as we’re underway here for the second period. Washington wins the draw, but they’ll lose it to Stall inside the Canes blue line. And now it’ll be chipped back in the Washington zone. Knocked away from Jarvis and Chatfield. They’ll send this one all the way around and the airmell back to the Kane’s line where Orlock has it bounced past him. Bilier got to it and Saw was able to knock that one free over the line. Now Ovuchkin will get one out in front. An opportunity as Stone was right there. Denied by Anderson and now it’s Martinook carrying it and backhanding one into the Washington zone that Stall will get. He’ll play fetch. He’ll take a shove from Matt Roy. Stall along then boards in a chance. there will be snagged by Thompson. He’ll hang on 50 seconds into this one. Washington won a board battle and some pretty tight coverage in front of Frederick Anderson on the best early chance of this very young second period. Then you counter the other way and Fetchnikov routine save for Thompson. Thompson’s a great story for head coach Spencer Carberry. Undrafted goalender and played for Spencer Carberry in South Carolina in the East Coast Leagues several years ago. Slavven with a shot through traffic. That’s kicked away by Thompson. And now here comes a chance for Washington. Storming into the zone, curling around and losing kept in by Wilson. He’ll get it to Conor Mcichael. Then he’ll have it knocked away by Blake. And Washington has to regroup. Burns lost his stick in the neutral zone. That gave Mcichel the outside lane, but Frederick Anderson really challenged in a way that Mcichel could not shoot the puck. Uhoh. Now the Canes will give away and Dubis hits the crossbar. A giveaway right to Pierre Luke Dubois and he stings the medal behind Frederick Anderson. Gostas Bear had one in the first. Washington here now a shot through traffic and Anderson is able to close that one on the Van Reamsike offering through traffic and a necessary whistle after the puck lock on an ill-advised turnover. Dubois quick release beat Anderson high to the glove that very easily could have hit the back bar and been a goal. Not the crossbar flush. That’s a break. But and it was a Burns turnover. Pressure from Wilson and it hit the crossbar. I mean flush. Frederick Anderson especially on the road. He has the ability to feel the temperature. That gets the crowd involved that crossbar. Get a whistle if you can. And he did. Now Janowski takes the draw. Washington wins it back. Low drive will go wide of Anderson’s net. The rebound will be tipped out by Kerier. And Robinson hustling after it all the way back into the Washington zone. And take a shove from Alexv. Leonard takes a hit from Kerier. And now a bouncing puck. Settle down in the Washington zone and it’ll be flipped out over the blue line. Washington Eller hops this one for Leonard. That’ll roll. Anderson will get to it and he’ll put the glove on it and get a whistle here with 1746 left here in this second period. Still looking for a goal between the caps and games. You know, you’re right because as Dubois hits the post, same end that Gosses Bear did. Gossber was a post. Dubois a crossbar. Whether I’m right or wrong, all of a sudden that makes me cautiously optimistic when those puck luck moments here early in the second period are 1-1 at this point. So now Carolina has to win the draw. They too. Good job by Go and Warlock to get it back. And just a reminder, this is the period that Carolina has dominated all season long and did against the Devils and scoring the Devils 9 to4. Meanwhile, Washington outscored Montreal 7 to6 in the first round. Pass intended for Roy, but Kokini with a good stick to it. Another one on Ovuchkin to knock it away. Two good plays by Kokini. Now Chatfield into the Washington zone. He wants to center it. It’ll bounce off the boards. The Hall deflected out in front by Stan Coven and Thompson had to be ready. He was deep in his crease. Good answer there from Carolina. And now this one is rolled in and Anderson will bat that one to the corner where Stall will get to it. Hans will clear, but it’ll be intercepted by Carlson but offside. And that’s one of those offsides where the Caps were making a change and the door on the bench was open. Not everybody was off the ice yet. Ovetkin, other than that power playet one-time that Wilson got a piece of and broke the shaft of his stick on the cap’s only man advantage, he hasn’t been dangerous. Well, after Kokan, he prevented a seam pass in his own end to a pinching defenseman. Ovetchkin was about to fire from a quality place to shoot the puck and Kokan is able to get a stick on it. So that’s why those were two fine plays by Espar as this draw outside the game zone is won by Stall. Batted to the Washington blue linear will get to it as it’s knocked back and forth and tipped in here by Martin. Jarvis goes after plays it around to Stall. Stall along the right wing boards. He uses that frame to keep it away from Dow. He’ll get it to Jarvis. Jarvis turning away from Chickring. He’ll send it down low behind the net. Stall. Stall knocks down Dow. That’s just country strong there. Now Martinook off the boards. Angles it. Gostas pair to Walker. Walker through the high slot. That’ll deflect. Martinook to it. Wanted to get it to stall. Up the boards and it’ll finally be chipped out. And Washington trying to get some numbers here. Prous shoots and [Applause] scores. Alexi Prous into the zone, lets it go from the high circle and he beats Frederick Anderson to the far side. It’s one- nothing Washington. Brous is a guy that you worry about. He had 30. Breakout year in every facet in the regular season. Just returned to the lineup coming back from injury. The Caps were able to win a board battle at their own at their own blue line that created the twoonone and it’s Du Hay coming off those four block shots that is able to get Costar to commit that creates the twoonone. Walker plays the pass gets a great shot but that’s one Anderson committed to the shooter would love to come up with. As we now move forward, Washington takes the draw. Wilson has a hit for Burns. Kane’s trying to clear the puck for Alexi Prous. That is his first ever postseason goal as he is playing his sixth playoff game. Played in a couple of last year, all four in that four nothing sweep at the hands of the Rangers. got back for the last game against Montreal and he now has Washington up one- nothing here in the second period. Sandine they’ll work this one across and Mcichael couldn’t take it as Tom Wilson with a great play but Mcichael couldn’t settle it down and now here comes Aaho into the Washington zone dropped back for Spetchnikov wave at it but that’ll be tipped by Sand Dean need to make a change. How about Dub Du Hames contributions 25 minutes into this game. The four block shots and they were quality blocks and then with support from Prous. He’s the guy that creates the twoon-one. He has been their best player. Mia now with it in the Kane zone into the corner. He tries to work this one around for Eller going to be tipped along the board. Dorov has enough to muscle this one out as it gets through Alexia. He’s bothered there by coach Kiami. He’ll clear it and he’ll be sent right back in as Van Remdike had it chipped out. And this is going to be a skate race in icing as Walker wins it against the Caps. A step that Carolina took on the road. They won one of two on the road obviously game four against New Jersey. We know what a theme it was on the road, especially in the second half of the season and late, giving up goals in bunches. The Caps have some life right now. Still a one-goal game. You’d love the first goal, you didn’t get it, but to be able to limit any type of pushes that exist, especially when you’re on the road. Here comes the chance now as it’s Janowski. Kerier wins the draw as he dives for it to get it back for Orlov. He’ll send it in deep but able to clear as Washington. Leonard going after it in his own zone. He’s shrugged off by Orof and he’ll work it across for Chatfield to the Washington line and around Robinson with it along the left wing boards. Van Reamed. He take a shove there by Kerier. Robinson with it again. He finds Kerier behind the Washington net. His pass off the boards for Chatfield will go too far. You know that William Kerier would like a little revenge against Washington as he was part of the Vegas Golden Knight team that was beaten by the Caps in 2018 and Vegas’s first try at winning the Stanley Cup. He was mad at himself. Came up with that puck at the end of his shift and went low to high trying to get it to Chadfield, but he just put too much on it off the wall. He looked up as he left the ice surface knowing, you know, I needed to feather that a bit more. This clock worked into the zone. Or with a hit behind the net. worked around by Stro. Blake was knocked down. Kings will get to it. Played off the boards. AO. He’s going to drop this for Spetchnikov. And his long drive was seen and hung on to there by Thompson. 1319 remaining here in the second period. A one- nothing Capitals lead here as we’re almost halfway through this contest. Caps have been cleaner in their own end. They’ve spent less time in their own end in the first almost seven minutes of this second period than they did in the first. Fetchnikov from Aaho as we went to Commercial. Pretty routine save for Thompson, but I still like Spetchnikov thinking about a shot first because when he struggled this season, you know, he’s hesitant to shoot the puck. Offensive zone draw here for Carolina. AO had it pushed to the inboards. Washington trying to clear. Mcichael second effort gets it out and Wilson with it will avoid the check of Aaho and get it in deep. Washington goes to chase after it but a nice play by Burns as he takes it away and a backhand pass finds Fetchnikov and then drive his way into the Washington zone. Fetchnikov back for Burns side of the net. It’ll be deflected and settled down. Now here’s a chance. AO will get it for Gostas Bear. Goss bear through traffic. Got a deflection from Fesnikov. AO tries it. It’ll bounce off the boards. Kane’s making a change. So it’ll be kept in by Walker taking advantage of the long change and another block by Washington up high. This time it’ll be Mcichael and that one will go out of play. It was a good change. Long second period change by Slavven that allows you to keep the puck in the Washington zone. Walker fresh comes on the ice. The Caps get a stick on it. Their shot blocking parade in different ways continues. Jackson Blake just finished a shift. He was so impactful, I thought, in the first round. He looks a little jumpy tonight. Hopefully can settle in with his hands and do the things that he can do dynamically offensively. 1232 left here in the period. One- nothing Washington. Kami was in the faceoff. He’s asked to lead. So stank over against Dow to the left of Thompson. He’ll draw it back. Does Dow all the way for Carlson. got an assist on the goal along with Du Hane that has Washington in the lead. One- nothing here is there and Walker will exchange with it. Back in off of snake opener rolls in behind the Washington net. Carlson plays it all the way around for Pro. Proise will mishandle the puck. Coach Kami’s backhand pass goes off of the large winger of the Washington Capitals. And then those two will meet in the game zone along the end boards and the pucks spits out. Nice job by Stankov. We’ll get this one. Coach KMI he’ll leave it for Gosses Bear along the left wing boards. His shot goes off of Chikin behind the net. Stankover takes a hit to make a play to get it to coach KMI just inside the blue line. His shot doesn’t get through. That is going to sting Walker as he is making his way to the bench in some kind of pain. A cross corner dump. Stanovven with it. Sends it out in front. Dow intercepts and this will be flipped high. Back in the Kane zone. Anderson has to play it. No icing. Anderson up the boards. Maybe Mark Chancowski working it around the Washington zone. Big hit there. Carrie on Alexv. Walker still hunched over on the bench being looked at by trainer Doug Bennett. Alexv, he’s going to take a hit there from Ker. Another puck out in front. Rolls off of Jenkowsk’s stick for the Capitals will clear into the zone. Chatfield. He’s got a shove or two for Duane. And this puck finds its way for Eric Robinson along the left wing boards. He’ll skate it out of the cane zone. Maybe been Carolina’s best line. Janowski, Robinson and Kerier would not disagree with what we’ve seen so far in this one. Now Slavven across for Burns up for Robinson. He’ll find Janowski. Martin out in front but couldn’t handle the bouncing clock in Washington is able to work. It is Ovuchkin gets this one up for Eller. Eller and he’s just going to send this one in deep. Worked around the boards. Mapani he’ll play it back to the point. Good job here by Stall. He knocks it free and the Canes want to run. Here comes Jarvis. Jarvis gets the shot off and Thompson flashes the leather. Snags it, hangs on. 10:09 left here in the second period. That was a a quality release from Jarvis. Jarvis’s best look so far tonight. He enters the Washington zone on one side, uses the middle of the ice. That gets a goalender moving oftentimes leaning, not square, goes back against the grain and Thompson makes a really fine save with his glove. I don’t think that Jarvis got it as high to the glove as he wants. I think Carolina, you know, when they have clean looks, I think midway on the blocker and up upstairs on the glove. Jarvis just didn’t get it as upstairs as he wanted to. Thompson and Lingren were keeping the score at home. Both the left-handed goalenders. Just despair will keep this one in. Ao hammered it but misfired it. Now Fetchnikov with a strong move out in front but puts it just wide. AO taken down along the boards. Going to be kept in deep. Blake will get to it but his pass was off the mark and Washington can skate it free into the Kane zone. That’ll be chipped up by Walker looking for Wilson. And at the last moment Gostas Bear was able to get in front of him and now the Canes coming back the other way. Blake feeds Zaho out in front and unable to get to the rest of that is Kerier Burns in the first period. Gospar there two big defensive plays otherwise I think Tom Wilson has two goals in the first half of this game. Now Blake with it. He goes across the rink for Ker. Kerier into the Washington zone. He’ll snap a shot snagged by Thompson. He’s showing the leather here. 916 remaining in this second period as we’re past the halfway point of this second period and contest. Carolina trailing Washington one- nothing here in game one of this second round playoff matchup just past the halfway point of regulation Mike and Washington has now 19 block shots point of regulation Mike and Washington has now 19 block shots so that’s a big theme you know Jacob Marstrom I didn’t think a lot about like you do with most goalenders that you’ve not got to create rebounds seconds and thirds he’s the exception to the rule Thompson is a guy that will who’s been dialed in that will give up rebounds. Carolina has not been able to create the seconds and thirds so far. Offensive zone face off. Kane will come up with a puck. Good work there by Robinson and it’s Burns. His long shot goes wide along the left wing board. Slavven will keep it in. They’ll get it away from Leonard. And now it’s Carrie to Janeowski out in front and it was waved at by Thompson. Robinson was right out in front. If he would have spun the other way, he might had a chance to knock it down. Now Robinson does a good job to keep this in as the Canes can take advantage of the long change for the Caps here in the second period. Leonard with it. He gets as far as the Canes blue line. No further. Alexia will retreat back into his zone with it. Janowski, Robinson, Carrie, they have been close. and we’ll see if they can push it across the line is Carolina offside here. Is that the call with 828 remaining here in the second period? Seems like those three guys, as I mentioned, Janowski in the middle flanked by Robinson and Ker, they’ve spent virtually every one of their shifts in the offensive zone. Now, they don’t have the hands and the skill level that your top lines do, but they’ve made an impact and they’ve been right on the doorstep here. See if they can punch their way in as Orof wanted to get it in deep. Nice play by Carlson. He works this off the boards for Ovetkin. Ovetkin. He rifles one all the way back across for Chickin and that is going to be just off the mark. Anderson might have got a piece with his glove as it went high over his cage. That exploded off a Shikin stick. He can fire the puck. He had a massive year. And now a massive hit laid on there by Ovuchkin on Jarvis. And now a chance for him up high by Strowman. That’s kicked away by Anderson. And then Ovuchkin runs in to stall. They’ll get it out in front. Pavilier and Ern with the answer. Puck still live. Orlov trying to clear it. This by far was the best shift that Washington had as the puck is fired in the Washington bench and we’ll get a whistle with 744 left here in the second period. Not only was it their best shift by far, the best shift of the night for Ovetkin and he’s been quiet other than that power play chance in the first. Very quiet. He had a hit on Jarvis and then a big time collision. Captain on captain with stall sets up a great a chance in front and Anderson made a really good maybe a save we’ll look back at attacking stop on the blocker side. Looked much much more convictionbased there than he did on the proise goal in the same spot. Now the drawing the king zone Dubois trying to come up with it going to be knocked away and Slavven has it. Slavven and he’ll get it to Fetchnikov into the Washington zone. It goes pass by Blake. Knocked off target, but Slavven able to keep it in deep. Setchnikov fights for it in the corner. Along the left wing boards it goes. Wilson wants to get to it at the point. Slavven is able to keep it in. And then Wilson will airmail this one to center ice. Bouncing puck picked up here by Dubois. He is wide with it. He had Sandine. And if you would have looked the other way, he had Wilson charging down the middle lane. Seven minutes remaining here in the second period. One- nothing Washington on top of Carolina. And Slavven’s pass knocked into the zone and knocked right back out. Slavven has to chase it back. He’ll get it away from Dow to Gosses Bear. Gosses Bear takes the hit. Slavven will take one by Duhane, but not much of an impact there. And Stanovven is able to skate this one out. Laid along the left wing boards. Hall through the blue paint. This one will come across. Walker at the right point to Goss Bear. He’ll walk the blue line. His shot blocked again by Duane. Scapped in at the right point by Walker. Dowed with a hit. Carolina wants to keep it in, but Washington will find the loose puck. Skate it over the blue line. It’s Brous. And he’ll drop it here. Going to be turned by Chikin. Chikin. His offering out in front. Rebound comes all the way across. Produce gets a stick. Broken up nicely by Gostas Bear. And now Stanovven. He’s got coat Kimmy with him. And the numbers evaporated for Carolina. Go KMI with it in the Washington zone. Back for Gostaspar. He’ll get it back for Walker. He goes side of the net for Ker. Under six minutes remaining here in the second period. Gostas bear. Walker and he’ll get it back again. Good play by Kerier to get it to Gosses Bear through traffic and deflected just wide as it trickled through the crease. Kane’s keeping it in. Stan Coven. He goes high glove, but Thompson with the answer. I think the high glove was part of the scouting report. Based upon what I’ve seen on this southpaw, I would depart from that. 531 left here in the second period. Carolina doing everything but score. Caps have done it once. Hurricanes and Caps. Washington with a one- nothing lead here. Trip, you know, I’m thinking about it cuz Thompson’s been really good. When Carolina won the game and Chase Thompson in the first period in Raleigh in late March, they got to the inside in layers, created those second and thirds. I mean, they really got to the interior and made things difficult and he was gone before the end of the first period. They’ve done a lot to the good. They can do that better. as Baja wins the draw. Chatfield doesn’t get the shot through and Washington is going to put this one between the blue lines where Wilson will get to it. He’ll chop at it, but give it away to Orlo. Or though turns it back over to Carlson. Wilson has it chopped away and it’ll be sent in deep into the Kane zone where Anderson leaves it to Orlo. And now here comes Fetchnikov as the Canes connected. Detach off and that got the metal and went out of play. He had hit the top side of the crossbar but he was hunting for the location. Thompson just threw his mask tried to kiss the crossbar. That was an Andre Fetchnikov release. A vintage Andre Fetchnikov shot. Second post of the game for Carolina. Washington has had one. Best confidence moment of the night for Blake. moved the puck from the middle of the ice in transition. Despikov posted up at the offensive blue line. Everything but score a shot. Well, a line that’s been very good for Carolina tonight. Janowski. Kerier and Robinson with Goss Bear and Walker behind him. Leonard takes the draw, loses it to Janowski. Here’s a chance for Kerier in the bouncing shot just to the left of the net of Thompson. Manapani plays it around for Sandine, the former Toronto Maple Leaf. He’s given a little bit of a shove there by Robinson. Now the Kings will keep this one in. The Walker offering will be deflected over the glass into the netting. 442 left here in this middle frame. It is good to see Andre Fetchnikov clearly confident with his ability to shoot the puck. That one he d from Blake. He got to the middle, he dragged it and fired. And as I watch Thompson here in this game, for me, if if I’m going high and I got a choice between the glove and the blocker, I’m going to the blocker, not the glove like Andre Spetchnikov did. Easily could be 1-1. Big face off here for Carolina. And it’s taken by Stanov and when back turns will keep it in. He’ll get it to Hall who loses an edge. And Washington will get it out to center ice. Will be settled down here. Duane now side of the net. Slavven with a good defensive play. Centered out in front. Hall deflects it away. Kapped in by Washington as it’s sent deep. Roy go around the boards with it. Trying to get to it. Duane. Burns though does a good job to tie him up and the Canes will take this away. Stankov he’ll play it back for co. This bury coach Kimmy. He was around the boards but nobody home for Carolina as Orof was coming in on a change. New Jersey got nothing from their third and fourth lines. The Dow line with Duay and Prous has been Washington’s best. Totally different animal with regards to the Cap’s bottom six. Stanhovven throws the body there on Roy. Puck will find Bavilier who is going to have nightmares on that save that Frederick Anderson made here in this period. Now Stall keeps it in looking for Stanton Golden but bouncing puck will be cleared away by Washington. Back to the Kane blue line. Orlock with a tight turn. He’s got space through the neutral zone into the Washington end. Jarvis wants to go deep with it. Van Remdikeke will come up with it. Washington will give it away. Martinook high slot. That’s blocked. Second opportunity. That doesn’t get through. Jarvis with it behind the net. He’ll go back for Chatfield around for shot doesn’t get through. It hits Martinook. Martinook sweeps it around. Dow looks like he’s gassed. Stall will get to it. Martinook bulls his way out in front. That goes through the crease and Dow plays this one off the boards and can he get to the bench. Yes, he can. But Van Remsteike still on the ice. Now it’s Slavven across ice. That’ll be bounced down there by Blake. He’ll get it to Fetchnikoff up top. Slavven. Slavven. He tease it up. That shot’s blocked. Ovetkin got in front of that offering. And now Washington. They’re looking more like they’re in survival mode here in this second period with 235 left. Burns with it. Burns into the Washington zone. Plays it away from Dubois. Van Reamdike still on the ice. Knocked off the puck. Blake wants to make a play. Carlson steps in front of him. Kane’s working with it. Oh, with a drive and Thompson with a save. Blake into the corner. Loose puck. Van Reamdikeke will get to it. He’ll flip it high. Not out. Second chance as it bounces in front of Thompson. Blake was right there. AO had the chance as well. Svetchnikov threw it through. He’ll keep it in. Kanees will make a change. Long drive. This will bounce across. Gostas bear keeps it in. His pass will be deflected. Mcichael got to stick to it. Under two minutes left. Walker with it. Kane’s good puck movement. Side of the net. Deflected by Thompson. Gostas Bear way up on the play, but this is deflected over the glass into the netting with a minute 50 left here in the second period as the Canes have ratcheted up the pressure. It felt like uh former Hurricane Trevor Van Reeck was on the ice there for about two and a half minutes. I mean, he is hunched over across from the bench trying to get his cardiac nature back where he wants it across from the benches. That is the beauty of the long change in the second period. You did everything but score. Then Washington is able to get a whistle when Trevor needed it more than anybody. AO got a really good redirection going from high to low. Thompson made the save. I think it just hit him. That was a really That’s getting to the inside. Kes have had 12 minutes of offensive zone time to about six for Washington. And as play resumes, the Caps flipped it in the Kane zone but quickly sped spinned back into the zone of Washington as Robinson goes after this into the corner. Prous. These are two big bodies right around a chance to clear here from Mapani. Stepped into by Orlock. Gains to the loose puck. Bo Kmi is going to send this off the boards. Chikman to it. He’ll play this one past Chatfield. Go Keni runs back. That’s going to be icing with a minute 14 left here in the second period on Washington. Couple of quick steps there from Ko and Y. And that could be big because Eller can state skate even at this stage of his career. Because of that, Yasperi guarantees icing. So now Washington change, Carolina can’t, but they’re going to keep the same guys on the ice. So this is a big shift or big faceoff for Koken after he’s the one that guaranteed this icing play against Eller. See if he can win it. talking with the linesman. Still waiting to drive. Fell dropped it and one cleanly coin for Slavven. He was fronted though without a stick. I believe Roy just lost it. And now Eller in the corner. Yeah, Roy is without a stick. Can the Canes take advantage as Eller will take down Stankover? Roy will pick up his equipment. Manapani will take the pass from Roy and just flip it over the blue line. Keelo quickly up on it. Stall, he’s cut off by Roy. Chicken will come up with a puck. 45 seconds left here in the period. Slavven will keep it in at the left point. Looking for a redirect. Got it from Stall out in front. Stank Coven with a chance. That’ll be knocked away. Correction. Jarvis. Now Burns will keep it in. Along the boards it goes. Stall. He’ll lean in here on Eller. and a chance to finish Roy. And Martin Nook does. Mjapani finds a way to muscle this one out to center ice. Jarvis though backtracking. He’ll come up with it. 16 seconds left here in the second period. Martinook wanted to make a play to get it to Jarvis. And offside is Carolina with 11 seconds left here in period number two. Neutral zone draw. So, you know, you’re going to have to do something pretty special here to get another chancer with 11 seconds left. I thought Washington started the period better and Carolina’s taken over the game. And they’ve really done so in waves. You know who has started to become very impactful in this period, shift after shift. Andre Fetchnikov. Can he continue and find yet another level? His shot looks dangerous. He’s been physical with 11 seconds left in a draw outside of the cap’s blue line. AO, he’s digging in for it. He’s going to wave out Juwis. So, so if Aaho can win this back to Orof and maybe a quick pass to Chatfield, he might get an opportunity here late. He’s got to take the draw against Wilson. They should have waved that one off as Dow jumped in, but they dropped the puck. Caps get to it. This will be sent into the Kane’s zone. The clock will come to zero. And oh, we’re calling a penalty here on Sebastian Aaho. No icing, I think, here. And let’s see if they check the clock. It right now it’s 2.3 seconds. Rod doesn’t do this, but for me, I’m pulling the goalender here. You know, it’s he’s again something special. You just can’t, if you’re Washington, get the puck all the way down the ice in 2.3 seconds. Right now, the reason why I saw that is Aaho and Wilson are getting involved. There’s a lot of chatting going on on the ice right now between the Caps and the Canes. And I think both teams have been just fine physically. Tom Wilson is going to try to with his lip service get Aaho off his game. Nahoo’s got to win this draw. He can get it to Blake. Blake one move to the middle and fire. AO against Dow. Do it again. Here’s a delayed drop. Drops the puck. Ao wins and will get a whistle. Ao won it cleanly back to Orlov and they said no go. I think they both got warned. So now it’s 1-1 in the warning department. Au’s trying to win it to Blake. And if he if he can’t or Orof quick shot. So he’ll do it again. Au and Dow. And Dow will play it back into the corner. And that’s how the second period comes to a close. Washington got on the board 3 minutes and 53 seconds into the second period. Alexi Pro’s first ever playoff goal. And that’s how we go to the second intermission with the Capitals leading the Canes one- nothing. Adam Gold will have your intermission report back in Raleigh after this. 40 minutes in the books at Capital One Arena and the Canes trailing Washington one- nothing. Adam Gold inside our network studio on the Lenovo intermission report. After two periods in Washington, one- nothing Capitals. Alexi Proish with his first goal of the playoffs from Duane and Carlson. It came 353. into the second transition goal. Shane Gosses Bear trying to keep the puck in the offensive zone at the blue line. Gets past him and Proish is off twoon-one. Shawn Walker, the only hurricane back and kind of left really with no no option, try to take away the uh the pass, leave the shooter to Anderson. Uh but Proish was among the leaders in five on five goals in the NHL this season, a 30- goal scorer. Uh and just an elite shot just off the inside of the far post from the right side beats Freddy Anderson. Carolina was very good after that. Really pretty good before that. Uh but the Hurricanes don’t have any goals to show for it. Andreas Fetchnikov has hit his second crossbar of the game and Carolina just hasn’t gotten any good breaks in that regard. A lot of their shots are from distance and you’re supposed to get some traffic in front. When you don’t have as much traffic in front of the goalender, those shots become harmless. But it’s not like Carolina hasn’t had traffic in front, just maybe not enough of it. Uh but Washington leads it one- nothing. Hurricanes pretty much playing the game they want to play. Keep playing that in the third period, maybe you get a goal. Uh we’ll come back and listen to highlights next. Now will get one out opportunity as Stone was right there. Denied by Anderson and now it’s Martin carrying it and backhanding one into the Washington zone that Stall will get. Yeah, Carolina uh dodged a bullet there. Uh Washington’s best part of this game were probably the first five minutes of the second period and it leads to a twoon one with Alexi Proish and nicked out. A chance for him up high by Strowman. That’s kicked away by Anderson and then Ovuchkin runs in to stall. They’ll get it out in front. Pavilion and with the answer. Puck still live. Or trying to clear it. This by far was the best shift that Washington had as the puck is fired in the Washington bench. And we’ll get a whistle with 744 left here in the second period. Yeah, it’s a great save on Bavilier by Freddy Anderson. The hit by Ovetkin on Stall forced the turnover and then the pass over to Bavilier who was alone in front. Best save from Anderson of the night. Although I actually think the save on Ovetchkin on the power play might have been a little bit better. And then Andre Spetchnikov this close to drawing Carolina even. Now here comes Fetchnikov as the Kings connected. Dosetchnikov and that got the metal and went out of play. They had hit the top side of the crossbar but he was hunting for the location. Second crossbar of the game. Carolina leads Washington three posts to one. Washington has one more goal. Carolina nearly drew even late. Jackson Blake. Sebastian Aaho on the prowl. Blake into the corner. Loose puck. Van Reamikeke will get to it. Second chance as it bounces in front of Thompson. And Blake was right there. AO had the chance as well. We are through 40 minutes. Cory Lavallet from the Athletic and North State Journal joining us from DC. All right, one- nothing Capitals in this one. But, uh, do you has is Carolina playing the game they want to play? You know, I think for the most part, yes. They have a little bit of a slow start to the second. Um, but beyond that, I think they’ve kind of gotten to what they want to do. Um, but, you know, you need to win the goalending battle and so far they’re not doing that. So, that’s that’s been the difference so far. Uh, do you think that goal is on Freddy or is that goal on giving up the twoon-one rush? No, I mean, he’s got to make that stop at top of the top of the right circles. You know, it’s a good shot by Brous, but you can’t get beat from that far out, you know, without without any kind of traffic or anything. Just uh, you know, a tough one to give up and you move on. And Freddy made a couple decays in the second period that were uh, you know, kept this game at one nothing. And I think the Hurricanes have liked probably what they’ve been able to do. Um, but, you know, the first period, you know, we’ve heard it a million times, right? You have a big first period, but you come out of it with nothing. Uh, and then you end up, you know, now you’re now you’re chasing the game a little bit. Yeah, I’m not sure Carolina’s really had that many great scoring chances in this game. They have and nor has Washington, by the way. Uh, I think this game has been, if I was going to liken it to football, has largely been played between the 20s. Uh, does does Carolina maybe need to uh involve Seth Jarvis in more of an offensive situation? You know, that could be a move that Robin Demore makes. I think, you know, usually if Rod’s going to make a change, this is the moment he does it. He likes to come out in the third with a new look. So, we’ll see if that happens. That being said, I think they’re doing what they want to do. You know, they’ve hit the post, I think, three times tonight. Um, yeah, that’s that’s not an excuse, but, you know, they’re getting the chances they want. They’re generating opportunities. I don’t know that there’s necessarily a lack of offense. It’s very Carolina out there, right? Um, one thing I do think they need to do is stop, you know, stop testing Logan Thompson’s glove. His glove is on tonight. You know, the best thing they can do is get get pucks into his pads and look for rebounds. You know, that’s how you’re going to score uh against the goalie that’s making all the stops up high. So, I think uh you know, that could that could be a recipe to maybe generate a little more a little more opportunity. Yeah, that was certainly uh there were some opportunities rebounds low uh with AO and Blake. What do you think of that top line, the Aaho Blake Svetchnikov line going up against uh Dubois and Wilson uh and I’m trying to remember the third uh the third forward on that line, but it’s it’s been a pretty good line for Carolina tonight. Yeah, they’ve been okay. I’d like to see a little more out of Aaho and see him, you know, get into a few more shooting positions. Um but aside from the the one turnover he had tonight um has kind of carried over his play from from the first round. I think he’s been impactful. Um yeah, and I mean Jackson Blake is is doing his thing, right? He finds the holes to make plays and and all that. Um it’s been tough sledding. You know, road games are hard. This is your prototypical game one of a playoff series between two good teams. They’re killing each other out. There’s not a whole lot of opportunities out there and you know you’re gonna need a bounce or you’re gonna need you know to cheat a little bit at some point to try to to try to get opportunities. Cory Lavallet, North State Journal and The Athletic is joining us from DC. Kane’s jail, the Capitals one- nothing. Um has there been enough traffic in front? Um I think at times there have been. I think, you know, the stall line when it’s been in the offensive zone has done a pretty good job of of getting there. Um, but you know, you can always get more, right? And like I said, I think they they’ve settled too much for for trying Logan Thompson club and that hasn’t worked and he’s kind of feeling a little bit. He’s showing it off some. So, I think, you know, yeah, you’re looking obviously looking for more traffic all the time and um, you know, it’s just a matter of can you can you create that. So, we’ll see if what what they have in the in the uh in the third period here. And we saw the uh the the physical impact of Alexander Ovetkin on the Anthony Pavilia uh great opportunity that Anderson made a good save on. Obie has the hit on Jarvis, then the hit on Stall to force the turnover. Uh it’s got to be cognizant of that. I lost you at the end of that there. I think you’re talking about good physicality. Um, yeah. So, I mean, I was I didn’t think Obi was particularly impactful offensively. You know, he had the one the one chance on the power play, but beyond that, he kind of spent a lot of time in the defensive zone even against Carolina’s fourth line at times. Um, but yeah, I mean, that’s a way he can impact the game when he’s not scoring, right? Because we know how physical he can be and and uh, you know, he can impact the game that way and force turnovers. So, uh, he’s somebody you always got to watch because he he may not be the freight train he was 10 years ago, but, uh, if he gets you lined up, he can still he can still deliver a good look. Cory Lavallet, North State Journal and the Athletic at Cory Lav on Twitter, my friend. Uh, enjoy the third period. Talk to you soon. All right, buddy. Tune in to NHL Unscripted with the Verin Demurs and the iHeart Radio app or wherever you get your podcasts. We get ready to start the third period of game one of this second round playoff matchup. Carolina Hurricanes trailing the Washington Capitals one- nothing after 40 minutes of play alongside Trip Tracy with our technical tandem. Pat Mi here in Washington DC. Rusty Heler back in Raleigh. Trip the Canes statistically have the advantage in every category, but the most important one they don’t. Ex the most important one and one other block shots. Washington’s got 25. Now, I think Carolina late in that second period had a good mix of doing the best job they’ve done of getting to the inside offensively, but you don’t want to do that all the time because then there are layers of shot blocks even it gets by the first guy. So, it’s a balancing act between at times sending a guy wide because the more bodies that are in the lanes, pucks aren’t going to get through. And we’re underway here in the third period. Gaines will rattle this one around the Washington zone. Stall is able to get this one out. Jarvis with a BB, but Thompson absorbs and will hang on and get a whistle. He is such a gamer. Logan Thompson riding a shut out right now. Yep. You know, I mentioned uh earlier in the broadcast a history as an undrafted player out of the Western Hockey League, played for Spencer Carberry when he was coaching in South Carolina in the East Coast Hockey League. So, they have that history together that’s now in the NHL and he has certainly looked the part, the gamer that he is, as his coach calls him. Six and three in his postseason history. Has never had a postseason shutout in a penalty coming up to Carolina off the faceoff. Washington though works it in off the inboards. Mcichael banks it. Anderson touches it. And for the second time tonight, Carolina will be short-handed. And it’s going to be a trip to Jackson Blake in the neutral zone. Carolina penalty number 53. Two minute minor tripping. This is the first game in his young postseason career. I think Blake has looked a little bit hesitant and actually it happened on Carlson right at the hash marks in the Washington end. Mike, this is a crucial kill cuz you you might generate something short-handed, but if you get through it, you’re you’re going to get another power play at some point. Big moment. Just the third penalty of the game. The first two were in the first period as the Canes do what they customarily do, win the draw. And Burns backhands this one all the way down the Thompson. Leave on a T for Carlson. Quick up for Stro. Stro gain center ice. Washington wants to go dump and chase. Martinook though ties it up and Stall hammers it all the way down. And here come your if you’re going to create offense short-handed. Here come the magicians. Ao and Jarvis on the ice. Now Stro with it. Crosses center ice and get it to Wilson off of his body. But that’s going to be a hand pass. That was up in Wilson’s sternum. So face off outside the Kane’s blue line. So 39 seconds into this kill and it’s been textbook for Carolina. Two veteran officials, Wes McCauley and T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T T TJ Luxmore. I do like the fact that they let five on five rule of the day. It has for the most part been a nothing that you’ve seen. Wes McCauley is doing the game. He actually did the game with Dan Oor the game seven in Dallas. Colorado and Dallas on Saturday. Spoke to him after. He said, you know, they wouldn’t have wanted to call eight power plays in that game. So, these are officials and Luxmore much the same like McCauley. They’d like to see five on five, like I said, rule the day. But if you get through this, then Carolina is going to get another power play. They’ve just had the one. Jarvis wins it away from Stro and Burns. shoots it about 145 ft. And now Aaho is going to come up with a turnover. He’ll get it to Jarvis. Now Jarvis has it pushed it just a little too far off of his stick and Chicken will get to it. Under a minute left on the kill for Carolina and the gap closed in on him by Slave. Burns now will pick up Chicken. Loose puck along the board. Zaho spots it. Went for a reverse hit. Stro though is able to keep it in. And a great play made by Brent Burns on Alexander Ovuchkin. And then he clears it and it was deflected. Washington was trying to argue that it went into the stands uninhibited. But Burns with a massive defensive play on the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history. And because you get the whistle, even though the faceoff will be in the Carolina zone, you’re able to change all four penalty killers. Here Dubis and Stall on an important special teams faceoff. Tied up and Mcichael will get a stick to it. He’s pestered along the boards there by Orlov can’t get to it. Kane’s wanted to set up stall. He’ll get to the loose puck. Martinook will and he’ll fire it off of Sand Dean into the Washington zone. Two minutes gone by here in the third period and Washington has 20 seconds left of a man advantage here. And as Blake is in the box for tripping along the left wing boards it goes. Kept in at the point by Ovetchkin. He rolls it around from Anjapani. He can’t get all of it. And away with it is Martin Hook. Martin Hook he’s got Stall with him. Stall with a short-handed try out in front rebound and Thompson makes the save and Carolina is going to go on the power play as Orlof followed the play and almost tied this one at one. Announcement from West McCauley first. number Washington to minor for a slash. It’s Ovetkin. That was a long shift. He was on for the entire power play. Do you know what the Hurricanes did? Martin, Stall, and Orof on the road. Tremendous communication just inside their own blue line probably with the bench to let them know that they had numbers to create short-handed to create a threeon two. Stall beats the opposing captain Ovkin to the front of the net. Draws the stick in fraction. Great communication. to let Carolina know they had numbers. Well, even better for Carolina, they killed off the power play and now a chance out in front is Blake had it roll off of his skates. Washington can’t clear. Kept in by Gostas Bear at the right point. Kaynes work it around. Jarvis Gostas bear Jarvis with it now. Fetchnikov wanted to get it to Gosses Bear and Washington just gets enough of this one to throw it over their blue line and the Canes need to regroup as Jarvis drops this one here. AO bounces off of the skate. Fetchnikoff there able to play it for Blake. Blake won’t drive down the right wing boards. Play that one for Aaho all the way back up. Goss bear quickly for Blake. Now it’s Aaho with it. Back up top. Gostas Bear walks the blue line to the middle of the ice. He’ll get this one here for Jarvis. Back to Gosses Bear. Tease it up and Thompson snags it again. His glove has been golden here tonight. Carolina’s power play entries against New Jersey were as good as I’ve seen in a playoff series. They got a good one there. Gossar moving to the middle, dragging it as the lefty he is. Blake, who I think’s just been a little bit hesitant. He’s off to the side. If he could just get a little bit more into the eyesight of Logan Thompson. Makes that save more difficult. Better chance at a redirection. Well, the Burns group will come out now. And a loose puck. It’ll be taken away by Stanovven to keep it in. Go Kane with it along the right wing to Burns. Burns. He’ll play it away from Duhane. Side of the net. Stanovven. He gets his legs taken out. Nice play by Carlson on a sliding block. Burns will keep it in at the blue line. Now Chance Hall. His shot doesn’t miss by much. Going for the glove side. Burns with it again. Another chance here for Hall. His shot right into the bread basket. Thompson will absorb. 41 seconds left in the penalty to Alexander Ovuchetkin. I think because this second Carolina power play group had some good looks back in the first period. Rod went to him more quickly, but I think Rod was probably in his head saying, “I’m gonna go back to the A group late.” Au, who’s had a good faceoff night. Your chances of scoring probably require a Sebastian Aaho clean win. It’s Aaho against Dow. Dow wins it straight back. Sand Dean though can’t clear it. It’ll be kept in by Speetchnikov. He goes across the ring as Jarvis had it. Dangerous pass, but the Canes will play it away from Bavilia. That’ll be worked back in. Fetchnikov up top. Gostas Bear. Look at it to Jarvis. That’s going to be off of Blake. You’re looking for that net front. Now Carolina will keep it in. It’s Gostas Bear. Speetchnikoff. Back to Gostas Bear. 13 seconds left. Gosses Bear’s shot is blocked up high. Kanees keep it in. Dow with that block. Goss bear wants it back. Moving in. Can’t get the shot through. Another block by Doubt. Gaines keep it in. Power plays over, but the Gaines keeping the pressure on. It’s worked here for Jarvis. Jarvis’s shot that goes off the crossbar. It’s still in play. Everybody thought it went into the netting. Jarvis beats Thompson, but the medal has kept this one scoreless for Carolina. Three iron moments. Gaspar in the first, Fetchnikov in the second, and there Jarvis through traffic. Just can’t get that iron bounce. Got to stick with it. Now Washington will stride into the Kane zone after the kill. Both teams are 0 for two tonight on the power play. Martin Nook will fish this one out. He’ll get it to Ker and this will be cleared over the Kane’s blue line and bounced back into the Washington zone. Thompson has to play it. Didn’t get a lot on it. Kane’s Chatfield shot is blocked by Prous. Or though will be able to get to it first. Or will leave it for Chatfield. 1435 left here in the third. The Hurricanes trail Washington one- nothing. And a goal that came early in the second period by Alexi Pro. And now Orv carries it into the Washington zone. Hall wanted to keep it in, but Washington able to clear it out for Bavilier. And the onetime New York Islander chips this into the Kane zone. Nice play by Chatfield to spin away from Ovetkin. Stro wanted to knock it down. Did but couldn’t keep it in. Kane’s in control of the puck here, but pass too far for Hall in Washington and just chip this one into the Kane zone. Slavven will go back to get it. His backhand pass goes up for Robinson too far and it’ll wind its way into the Washington zone. Won’t make it for icing. Van Rezite goes behind his net. It hasn’t been that physical of a game. And Slavven there, that’s how he alleviates any contact. Quick play going back to get a puck so the physicality can’t establish itself. Leonard wanted to put the body there on Burns, but Kaines will move this one back and will get icing with 1330 remaining here in the third. So, Washington will get an offensive zone draw. Remember back in the second period when Dubois hit the crossbar and I said, “Okay, iron moments are 1-1.” That started to make me feel better about things. Well, now it’s 3-1. Three posts for Carolina, one in each period. You know, that’s right now one of the significant differences in the game and why Washington has a one- nothing lead. Face off to the right of Frederick Anderson. Only faced 11 shots. Washington hasn’t put one on here in this period so far. Backhand chance by Mcichel. Goes wide. AO. He’s ridden down behind the net. Washington will keep it in. Wilson into the corner. AO foists for it. Dubis though will lean but it’ll be knocked away and Blake gets this up for Spetchnikov. He’s going to chip it and go after it himself. He takes a look and he’ll step into Roy. Roy will have a shove back but meanwhile Carolina will play on. Nice play by Orlo. Or tries to center it out in front as it was behind the net. Couple of big collisions on that play. Washington coming the other way out in front. Or gets back to backtrack it. What a play by Orlov and the chance for Washington evaporates and avoided taking a penalty. He came under the stick in desperation right in front of the Carolina crease. Under the stick but under the hands couldn’t take a penalty there so that made it even better. He’s quicker and I’ve seen him in a long time or right now. Now here’s a chance for Washington into the Kadan zone. It’s Eller. They’ll go into the corner. 1225 left in the third period. One- nothing Capitals lead the Hurricanes. Behind the net it goes. Walker wants to play it out. He’ll get some help here from Robinson. Waved off icing all the way on it. So Carlson wraps it around the boards in his own zone. Washington clears it up. Eller and he’s going to put this on the tape of Leonard in that shot right into the equipment of Frederick Anderson. Will hang on. And now some extracurriculars as Leonard trying to start a mess. He’s just a rookie, but has a very good release. Does Leonard, that’s as you mentioned, as you take us to commercial, the first action that Freddy’s seen in quite some time, so he didn’t try to overdo it. Made a nice save on that shot in stride from Leonard. 12:02 left here in the third period. Games need to find a goal. trailing Washington one- nothing in game one of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Mike Manoskeo here on the Hurricanes radio network. You know, I’ve been sitting down here in the radio booth all night. Can’t get the type of bounce that Carolina’s been looking for. So, it’s time to stand up and see if that works. Try anything as the Canes will win this draw to the right of Anderson. Burns have Proise leaning on him, but able to clear this one out. Through the blue line it goes, but he chipped in. Good play there by Stall, but only for a moment. Washington will peel it back into the Kane zone. Burns will locate Martin up with that one. That’s taken away and Burns will chip it away from Ovuchkin. out to center ice. Carolina will leave it. Stall glide into the Washington zone. He’s had big goals against Washington in his playoff career. Back 10 points in 14 games played against the Capitals in the postseason. Not all of those in a games uniform. Only been that 2019 playoff series, but he had a pretty big goal in the third period if I recall in game seven. He had a big second round against uh Washington that won seven before they played Carolina in the conference final where he won his only Stanley Cup. Back in his Pittsburgh Penguin days now Washington with the puck here. Mcichael backhand one in the Kane zone. Anderson moves it around the boards. Wilson wanted to keep it in but can’t Walker will get to it. behind this one. Carolina able to work this one in deep. Another chance. Here’s Taylor Hall got to it, but it’ll be knocked back out and Demetri Orlock forced to his own zone. Kanees will complete a change. Orlock turns. He’s got some room to work with. Plays it along the boards. He’ll get it to Hall. Hall has it knocked away. Bouncing puck. Kane’s come up with it with a chance. They score. Logan Stanco buries it and the Canes have tied this at one. Taylor Hall Mike on the entry at the Washington blue line eluded what would have been a heavy hit and that started I thought the whole chain reaction. Koke and Yammy made a great play to get it to Stan Coven on the inside. Then Logan Thompson. He’s leaning one way. Stan Kovven wires it against the grain to beat Logan Thompson high to the glove to tie this game. All three players on that line, I thought major impact on that goal. Carolina’s first of the series and a biggie. That comes just before the halfway point of this third period. And now we’re level at one here at Capital One Arena. Washington will chip this back in. Anderson has to play it away from Stro. Stro got a piece, but it bounces for Chatfield. Up for Stanovven, his third goal this playoff. Now he’ll get it to Hall. Hall drops it back. Coin misfires. It comes to Hall. Puck still loose. It’ll be put over the top of the net. Stankovven with another look at it there. Stro has to come back. He’ll wheel around and give it for Roy. Well, that line almost had their second goal in under a minute. Washington rolls it back into the Kane zone. Anderson with a touch. He’ll get it to Chatfield behind the net for Stall. Be taken away. Now to be kept in. Mcichael. His pass deflected. It goes off the boards. Not out. Chron will keep it in. Stall plays it off the inboards. And they’re going to say no ice. Washington could have played it. They said Van Reamike could have. So we keep it moving here with 910 remaining in the third. Mcichel drops it off for Dubois. Dubois trying to cut to the middle. Nice play made there as Aaho makes a defensive play and then Wilson goes after him and Aaho stands up Tom Wilson. Now Carolina come the other way. It’s Aaho. He’ll get the one-time and Thompson gets across to get a piece. Washington to the rebound coming the other way. It’ll be a chance here for Duane. He’ll wind it around the boards and be swatted at bynikov. Washington will keep it in. Fans wanted a call on Fetchnikov. Nothing there as we play on. Eight and a half remaining in this third period. 1-1. Gaines just tied it a few moments ago. Now a drive is put on by Prois and that’s caught and hung on to by Anderson and nothing after the whistle. 821 remaining here in the third period. Logan Stankovven’s third goal of this postseason has us tied at one. You’re listening to Hurricanes playoff hockey on the Gaines Radio Network. Want to wow mom this Mother’s Day? Carolina has tied it. Logan Stanovven now leads all rookies in goal scoring in this postseason with his third. How about Stan Kovven in game ones? Two in game one against New Jersey. And then high to the glove ties the game. Same net, same spot in the net. Both goals have scored. What do you think about Brous in the second period? The same end that Stan Kovven just scored. His was to the blocker because Anderson catches the normal way and the southpaw that Thompson is. And the Canes will win the draw. And Martin gets this to Jarvis. He can’t play his way around Carlson. Stall will come up with the puck though. Behind the net it goes. Good job there by Sand Dean to clear it out. Slavven’s got to play it away from Ovuchkin who’s got a chop for him. Burns quickly gets it out for Stall. Stall drops it back here. Martinook. Martinook he finds Slavven who goes for the blocker side high and just getting a piece of it was Thompson as he knocks it over and Burns wants to clear it in as stick snaps in half. Both teams making changes though. Washington on the puck. Pierre Luke Dubis trying to work around Shackfield. What a play by Chadfield to cut him off. And Dubis seems to be in some discomfort. Chadfield just an unbelievable job of matching that Dubois speed. Thompson gives it away and a chances knocked away as Thompson runs back into it. Svetchnikov loaded that up and yes, Dubois is in either he lost the skate. I think he lost his blade. Yeah, it looked like he was in discomfort, but he lost his skate blade going into the end board. So, we’ll get a whistle with 717 remaining here in this third period. Well, I mean defending with speed because Dubois is a big frame who can skate and Chadfield was able to match it, keep him to the outside causes the collision with the endboards and that’s where you he loses the skate blade as he’s trying to tight turn really one inside edge, one outside edge and lost the blade in the process. Carolina counters and Fetchnikov just about gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the night. off of that turnover up the middle. And keep your eye on Speetchnikov because for the vast majority of this year, he’s hesitated in shooting pucks. There are times when he needs to hold on to pucks, but when it’s a shooting opportunity tonight, zero hesitation. He’s letting it fly. That was a heck of a save, too. Recovery mode for Logan Thompson after giving it up as this faceoff just outside the Kane’s blue line. Washington wins it, but they’re denied entry. Sand Dean has it now along the near boards. He’s bumped there by Blake. Get it in deep. Or though winds it around. Fetchnikov gets enough and this will be icing. So bring the puck into the Kane zone with 659 remaining here in regulation. 1-1 here in Washington DC. I don’t think that would have been icing except the puck instead of going flat towards the goal line got up on edge and so it gained more momentum. Otherwise, I think it would have eventually been nullified. Sandine back to touch. Carolina’s had a decided edge in the faceoff circle, but Aaho is going to be on his tougher side here against Stro. There’s a warning for Aaho as he swooped in. They’ll drop the puck. going to be kept in by Chicken just inside the blue line at the left point all the way around. Fetchnikov will back into Conor Mcichael. Wilson will come up with it and we’re going to get a hand pass blowing the whistle here and again Tom Wilson in the middle of chatting with Sebastian Aaho trying to get the new dad off of his game. Yeah, and both teams I think have prioritized I mean Wilson is I mean it’s with a purpose. I mean the game in Raleigh that had a rising temperature when Carolina won and you know Tom Wilson he’s he’s trying his best to get under Sebastian’s skin. He’s going to try all series and I just don’t think Sebastian will bite hand. He just took Sebastian’s mouthpiece away from him. Yeah, he’s so he did not bite. Yeah, he no pun intended. He didn’t bite. I don’t think he would say congratulations on the birth of your daughter, Vivian. I do not think so either as the Canes back in action. Hall gives it a deep coat. Can he with it? Tries to make a move, but it’ll roll away. Mcichel wants to feed Wilson. Can’t do it. Canes keep it in. Stank over behind the net. He’ll twist away from Chicken. He will pop this one for Coach Kami. Co Canami tied up neatly there by Chickin, but McCain’s had it for a second. Knocked away. Stro stepped into by Keny. Now Stovven had gotten free in the middle of the ice, but the puck just rolled off of his skates. And Washington now looking to clear. This one will be chipped all the way in. And icing on Washington with 603 remaining in this third period. I wonder if they’ll allow Chan to change. They did change the drop for the Golden Knight. It is now arguing about a call that he thought should have been made. Not an injury situation. So he’ll have to stay on the ice off of icing. Now Aaho against Stro other end of the rink. He’s on his power side. Let’s see what he can do with it. 603 left here in this third period. 1-1. Alexi Pro for Washington. and Logan Stanovven for Carolina. Washington will win the draw. Fetchnikov has a shove for his former teammate Trevor Van Remdikeke, but Washington able to clear only as far as the blue line. Fetchnikov back for Gostas Bear. Gostas Bear into the Washington zone, but he’s fended off and now it’s given away. Coming in is Leonard in on Anderson. The rookie is denied. Mr. Anderson flashing out the right pad with the save there. No stick for Anderson. Let’s see if he can get it. Walker got back. Didn’t take a penalty. Washington. Carolina will settle it down. Able to clear it out to center ice. Svetchnikov. He’ll leave this one for Stall. Stall. He will have a shove there for Roy. Into the corner it goes. Eller and Stall, they’ll fight for it. Along the boards it goes. Proous lined up there by Jarvis, but he avoids the hit. But will he avoid icing? No icing on Washington with 505 remaining here in this third period. You know, the way Stan Kovven’s going tonight and Rod Brenda Moore, another icing situation where he’s the only coach that can change. He’s going to get this line right back out on the ice. Why wouldn’t you? And because I thought cuz I think Blake has struggled a little bit righty like Stan Kovven and I would have thought about putting Stan Kovven up with Aaho and Spetchnikov, but not the way this line all Koke and Emmy and Stan Kovven’s going. Here’s the face off. Coach Canyon wins it clean all the way back but a little too hard as it sprints over the blue line and forces Slavven back into his own zone. Now Burns has it deflected off of coin. Hall will take his shoulder and go into the corner with it. Stanovven tries to get a piece around the boards it goes. Dow can’t get to it. Hall can stepped in by Carolina just for the moment. Now it’ll come free and a chance for Dow. his pass read detected and intercepted by Jacob Slavven. He just does those little plays as Brous was trying to get a step on him. 425 left here in the third period. Now Chatfield with a great play in the middle of the ring. He’ll knock this one in deep. Chicken, he’ll give it away to Stall. Stall, he’ll try to turn away from Wilson. He can. Worked around the boards. Jafffield dives in now behind the net. It goes for Stall. Stall back up. Or fans on the shot. Stall will get a piece trying to come up with it is Jarvis. Martinook jumps in. Caps trying to clear. Mcichel along the boards. Wilson will get to it. Wilson over the center ice red line. He’ll look to get in on Orof. He’ll have a shove for him. Dubois along the left wing boards. He can’t settle it down, but Mcichael does. Now a chance here as Sandine shot goes wide. This will be kept in by Wilson. Wilson looking for a redirect, but that’ll go in off of Oroff and then Wilson and Stall had a little meeting of the minds there. Both maybe a little worse for it. I think Wilson got the worst end of it. You’re pretty much in overtime now from this point forward. 320 remaining in regulation as Burns makes a good play just outside of the Washington blue line to send this in deep. Setchnikov charges after it. Loose puck scooped up by Blake. He’ll send it to the corner. AO wants to center it. Slavven is able to keep it in. Van Reams. He’ll throw it into the corner. Ao with a massive hit on Sandine. Ovetkin. He’s bothered there. Look who makes the play. Slavven. Now this one goes over Slavven’s head, but Burns will be back to get it with 250 remaining here in this third period. 1-1 game. Rod’s leaning on this Kimmy line a lot based on the way they’re going. They’re right back on the ice with Hall and Stanco. Now here’s a chance for Lars Eller. Washington clears it out. Eller into the Kane zone trying to get a shot through Kent. Hall will come up with a loose puck. Taylor Hall puts it on the tape of Logan Stankovven. Stanovven flips this one high off the glass in the corner to the left of Logan Thompson. Chopped down by Washington. Cleared, but Carolina with a quick regroup. Nice play here. Coini one hand gets it back and Walker’s drive goes off of Thompson all over the glass into the netting with 210 remaining here in regulation. As Drip Tracy has just said, we’re in overtime right now, even though there’s 2 minutes and 10 seconds left here in this third period. Canes and Capitals tied at one. Have the Canes tied at one here on the road in this game. Trip, you’re coming off a week of a break. Not when fatigue starts to possibly play an element in the series. So Rod here in this third period has gone to three lines. the Janowski line that’s been just fine. Hasn’t played in a bit. And now it’s for Carolina. A worn it clean, but he’ll get a whistle. See if he gets a warning. If he gets booted. Looks like he’s being booted right now. So Jackson Blake, you know, just on nights where you think he’s fighting and I think he has to some degree, he comes in here and let’s see what he can do. He’s going to get some help here and a penalty is called off of the faceoff. Fetchnikov drew a high stick, I think. And it is a high sticking call against Washington with 207 to go. A huge break for Carolina. Here’s the call. Washington penalty number six. Two minute minor high sticking. Wilson is trying to engage Fetchnikov and Andre just has to turn the other cheek and worry about this power play. Chicken kills penalties. Fvetchnikov dove in. But I say that winger diving in for a 50/50 puck or if you have to turn a faceoff loss into a win, that’s where he drew the high stick before the game. For me, biggest key was your power play that was nuclear in the first round against New Jersey. 0 for two tonight. Has had some good looks. Here’s the game on the line. Let’s see what it can do. Kane’s power play was six of 19 coming into this series. Caps penalty killers 10 of 15. That’s 67.7%. That was 13th out of 16. Canes win the draw. Gostas bear with it. He’ll play this off the boards off of an angle. Blake tries to chip it back for Seth Jarvis, but a little too far. And now Carolina needs to regroup. So basically this power play is what’s left of regulation. Kane’s with it. Here comes Aaho back for Gostas Bear. Gostas Bear trying to find Carlson will jump into him. Can’t be cleared. kept in at the left point by fans on the one-time. Doubt will get to it. Worked around. Knocked out. Kept in by Gostas Bear to Jarvis. Jarvis looking for room. A minute 25 left here in regulation. AO. Gostas Bear. Back for Aaho. He’ll go skate to stick. Back up to Gostas Bear. Middle of the ring. He’ll work it around for Blake. Svetchnikov in front now. Gostasis Bear fakes the shot. A minute left on the power play. A minute eight left in the game in regulation. AO with it back for Gostas Bear. Looking for a redirect. That’ll be deflected to the corner. Blake, he’ll play fetch the coff. We’re in the last minute of regulation. 47 seconds left on the power play. And this puck is going to be chipped up high and it’ll hit the netting and then we’ll have a couple of shves afterwards. But Aaho and Gosses Bear, they cannot join this mayhem because the circles right now. Shane Gossar just tapped and let him know. You cannot sacrifice an offensive zone draw. Let the three guys that are in there. They’re outnumbered four to three with Washington short-handed. Let them fend for themselves because you need to value this offensive zone drought. Does Rod Bryndeamore consider a timeout here? And he may need it in overtime if you get there. You just think if if he wanted to stick with his A group, you call your time out here. So, you can finish with them with still 42 seconds left in this power play. But this other group has had some really good looks. And you got the goal scorer tonight on this group. So, if this group hadn’t had any good looks on the power play, I probably would have burned my timeout. But now, why? You might need it later. And this group has had honestly maybe even better power play looks. I thought the Gossar group there had some good puck movement, some good puck retrieval, but they they didn’t they had a reluctance to shoot the puck. Well, let’s set the scene. 49.1 seconds left in regulation. 42 seconds left here in Carolina’s third power play of this game. Kane’s 0 for two on the power play and their Burns unit out right now. Biggest face off of the playoffs so far for Coke and Emmy. It’ll be Wilson down and Roy for Spencer Carberry’s team. Stank over co and the Kings don’t win the draw. Washington does and they’ll fire it all the way down on Anderson. Burns with it now. Burns he’ll cross center ice. He’ll get it for Walker. Walker around the boards. Coach Kiami misses it. Wilson doesn’t. And Tom Wilson throws it all the way down on Frederick Anderson. Be ready. 20 seconds left until comes out of the box just in case they try to hit him for a chance coming out of that box. Going to be 7 seconds left for that chance as Walker out of his reach. He’ll keep it in though. Play it away from Roy along the boards. Hall spins it back a little too far and Wilson will get to it and the power play is over. Out of the box comes Anderson comes out of his crease to play the puck. Two seconds, one second and we have bonus hockey here in game number one of the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Logan Stanovven at 9:42 of this third period gives us extra hockey. Canes and Capitals overtime coming up as the Canes they show their resiliency once again. Adam Gold will have the intermission report and we will get you ready for overtime here in the nation’s capital between the Canes and the Caps. You are listening to playoff hockey on the Carolina Hurricanes radio network. This shirt lives. We’re at intermission now. the two tickers will go. Um, so we’ll have the two tickers, but I’m going to watch the Vegas Nights game. Do you guys want to listen to the nights uh game until uh intermission is over? I think I’m going to do it. Number two on that list, the Edmonton Oilers at 583 winning percentage. This is their 332nd postseason game. Of course, they have been around for a lot longer than the Golden Knights. 45 seasons. They’ve made the playoffs 27 times. Vegas seven out of eight. Aiden Hill and go to our right. Four and two each decision and each start in the first round. Carlton Eel Stone a Brock McNav Northern defense for the Oilers Cal Pickers making his ninth postseason appearance the 33y old from New Brunswick Dryle McDavid and Perry the starters up front nurse and Booard on defense Eric Furl Kelly Stland the referees dropping the pucks underway in second round game one Vegas and Edmonton nice work ahead after taking the opening draw stone dishes back to McNap and on the near side he cranks it off Carlson. Eichel shoots it. Gloved on goal and it’s stopped by Pickard. Eichel found the loose puck in the slot and he propelled it toward the goal and Pickard looked like he was dealing with a change up there as it went off the stick of an Oilers defenseman. It still went on goal, but Pickard made the save. Nervous moment for Cal Picker right off the hop. Picker appeared in 6 regular season games, second only to what he did back in 1617 with the Colorado Avalanche. That was the year before he came to the Golden Knights briefly. Edmonton clears the zone and the Oilers will take it back on their side of the ice. Opening 30 seconds of the first period. Edmonton in white wearing blue numbers, blue pants with orange trim. Nice and all gold on the left. Here comes McDavid. A shot after a dry side handoff. Aiden Hill makes the save. So each goalender gets a shot in the opening minute and a save. The south group from each side will change. Chris Snoblock put McDavid and Dry Cidle together midway through their series at LA. They need an offensive push and they got it. They were good down the stretch in that series. Started out a little sluggish and then he got some scoring from his depth which allowed him to keep that pair together. But he’ll change them at a moment’s notice. We’ll keep an eye on that. Top scorers for the Oilers in their opening round series. Knight’s top scorers had five points in Knights win a Dzone draw. White Cloud forward and it’s Hurdle to propel it deep. Faker takes the hand off behind his goal. He gave it away. Hurdle shoot blocked by N Hopkins to the right side. White Cloud steps toward the loose puck. He could not corral it. Edmonton forces it deep on goal. Hill secures it with the stick and then the glove and has the whistle emitted in. This is a different moment for Picker. It’s not coming into a series when his team is already in trouble or they feel they need a change. There’s different pressure on him. He’s the guy right now. Figure has been with the Oilers organization for the last few years. Before that, Detroit for a few years. Remember the Knights had traded him to the Maple Leafs at the very beginning of the 2017 season. He was part of the Golden Knights original roster but never played a regular season game after the Knights played Malcolm Cand from the Bruins during training camp. Knights with pressure on the foret. It is played in the near court. Tomas Hurdle is there along with Polar. Lookout. Hurdle goes down in the corner reaching for his face. Eric Furlac watches does not put his arm up. Whistle stops play. I’m not sure what took him so long to blow the whistle. The lineman’s going over now to talk to the referee. We’ll see what happens here. It happened right down beneath us. Yeah, they’re huddling here right below us. And looked like he got Kasar stick in his face. Yeah. Well, the officials will tell us what they saw. and a fourman for Vegas. So, because they call a penalty that allows them to review it, but this looks like friendly fire here. Well, I’m well couple of sticks. Yeah, there’s a couple of sticks go up. No, it’s it’s stick. They both get hurt. They both Kasar’s stick and Nan Hopkins stick get hurled in the face. Both of them are trying to lean on their sticks and then both come up violently and it looks like you’re right Gary that other angle shows that Nan Hopkins did got hurdle in the face along with Kolars. Now it might be hard to make this four minutes. Here we go. We’re going to find it right away. Here’s Eric Furl. Also review the ruling on the ice is concerned 93 for 7 a double model. So again there was no call by the referee Eric Furlac in the moment the whistle stopped playing once puck went out to the neutral zone Gary when something is egregious the linesman can confer with the referees and that appears to be what happened there. Now Hurdle will not be ready to start the power play. He’s getting repairs. So now we’ll see the Golden Knights with an early power play. Second in the league during the regular season in the playoffs. Seven. They had five power play goals in the first round. Edmonton gets it clear. Edmonton allowed eight power play goals to the LA Kings. Only 60% against LA. That was the worst kill by percentage. Well, they did kill off both Kings power plays in game six on Thursday. Knights right to left. Eel approaches the line down the slot. Puck slides on goal, but it’s covered up by Calvin Ticker for the whistle. So, just 25 seconds into the penalty. Two minutes into the game. It’s a 000 tie, but Ryan Nent Hopkins center off for two minutes. Four minutes a double miner for high stickers. Faceoff is on the right. Eichel with Olivson. Stone. Theodore and Carlson. Theodore to the right side for Eel. Looks down towards the corner. Back up top for Theodore. To the right half wall again for Olivesson. Up top Theodore. He shoots. Score. Power play. Goal. Mark parked at the left side of the crease. That is the first goal of round two. Just over 2 minutes into the first period, power play strike for Vegas. The best power play in franchise history pays immediate dividends here against the Oilers. It goes off an Oiler down the slot. Then it goes off stone at the left side of the net. And Vegas has a one- nothing lead. One of the things that Vegas has been doing a lot of is getting their puck through. And it’s been Shane Theodore. He scored that big goal in game six. William Carlson tips this off the shot and then I guess Stone gets it at the side of the net. Yeah, it goes in off the leg, but Carlson makes a great tip up high. Wow. Yeah, it looked like it went off Stone Skate. Yeah. And so we’ll see. My guess, Gary, when it’s all said and done, Stone from Carlson and Theodore. We’ll find out. Of course, Knight’s getting an early power play goal in this one. And they go right back to the power play because it was a double miner. Vegas enters on the near side left. Barbashev with Smith. And now Brandon Sod. Remember Tomas Shurtle unavailable for a little bit here because he got that stick in the face. Lead pass right towards Wad. Misses him, but it goes out of the zone on the clear by Nurse all the way down. So it’s one- nothing Knights. Just over 230 gone by here in the first period. Sod makes a fake through center. Gains the line on the right wing. Tap back by W. Back and forth with Hannifan. Walks Thunder step goes behind. Saucers left wall for Smith. Straight on. There’s Hannneathan to the right side towards Smith. Lost it in the skate and out comes Edmonton short-handed right side at the end. He pulls dishes left. Broken up by Hamilton and the puck sails out of play. Well, Sod sort of loved the pass so it got Smith in an awkward position rather than on his tape. It got him between the skates. Tomas Hurdle hopping onto the ice standing. The Knights will go to their top unit for the last minute of power play part two. Again, when it’s a double minor, if you score on the first half, the clock resets to two minutes. You don’t get a full four like it were a major Oilers with an ozone draw. They win it, but they will nice starts out. Jack Eel near shot charging up to the blue. Michael dishes toward Hurdle in the slot off his stick and nurse sends it the length of the ice. Hill drops it off. Here’s Theodore. Theodore coming out of his own zone. Carves his way through the logo. Enter is coming towards the middle. He shoots. Dave and it’s stopped by Pickard. Steals it to his right. He’s got a whistle. The credit indeed will be stolen from Carlson and 213. [Music] Calvin Pickner. [Applause] There’s no way to say it. He’s He’s played a lot of hockey in the miners. Has not been a starter very often in the NHL, but he is a fighter. Nice gets a puck from the draw. Picker comes out big to get the save on Victor Olivesson. Hurdle gets it in the left circle. Up top, Theodore left for Eichel. Ganick down to the goal line. Stone thinks he’ll take it behind to Olson. He shoots. Blocked. Up and out of play. Olson with an assist on the power play goal. Last game, his first career postseason point. Olston again. He’s in the lineup and on the power play because of Dora Diaz injury. Dorothia had played the first five really four plus. And it’s been Olson back into the lineup. So Oliver with his fifth career playoff game all here in 2025 from the draw. Edmonton fails to clear. It was gloved down at the line by Theodore, but then stick out to the neutral zone. Penalty clock at 7 seconds. Eel charging. Eel takes it around. He’s centered for Tomas Hurdle, but he was tied up down the slot. Good recovery on defense and the penalty time expires. That was Connor Brown, veteran from Toronto and the former Toronto Maple Leaf himself with that play on hurdle. Otherwise, it might have been another Vegas power play goal. Kistar with pressure on the forche. Takes it away. John Clingberg coughed it up there. Good old nemesis from his time with the Dallas Stars. Changed teams a few times. Wide left. A little zip inside the left dot. Kasar looking for his first point. I’m thinking about two nights after Brock McInn here in Washington won that series in seven. Two nights later, you and I were at Barkley Center at the time on Long Island and Jordan Stall was going to take this draw, won it in overtime. Was your first ever radio win and I said spontaneously consumed me. You’ll get another one of those if they can get one here. I said I had a hug coming to me if that happened and I will take it gladly. If the Canes can get in front of this series as we’re underway here, 15 seconds gone by in overtime. Jarvis will chip this one to Stall in the Kane zone. This puck will come free and along the left wing boards. Chadfield gains center ice and he’ll roll this one around. Stall will come up with it and take a shove from Stone. He’s pass a little too far behind the net for Jarvis. We’ll come out to the left point and we’ll get a hand pass here against Carolina which will stop play 38 seconds into this overtime. And the last Stanley Cup playoff game that Carolina won in overtime on the road was two years ago. Paul Stass need to end the first round. Derek Stepp on some heavy lifting in game six. Hey, let’s call it what it is. You know, that was a really golden opportunity that, you know, you left on the table there with that late power play, but it’s about moving on. This is like the long second period change, which should benefit Carolina as they’ll win the draw. This will be chipped into the zone. Chicken is run into by Aaho. Special comes up with a puck that goes wide. Burns with a shot deflected by Blake. And that was just off target. And now Aaho reaches for it along the left wing boards. It’ll come free. Mcichael leaves it for Chick. Chicken’s pass. Bounces to Slavven and Blake wanted to get it in deep. Does not as Carlson scoops it up now. Loose puck at center ice. Setchnikov with it into the Washington zone. Fetchnikov shot that’ll be blocked and that will deflect over the glass into the netting. 1842 remaining here in overtime. Rod Brendeore went to three lines in the third period. Let’s see if he sticks with that ideology or if he sprinkles in the Janowski line. That’s been good. Yeah. And here’s been their best line, no doubt about it. That’s on the ice. Hall, Stan Kovven. Hang on. This a little bit of a tweak here. You got Stan Coven with Jarvis and Hall. And Stan Coleman’s going to take this draw as he will face off against Dow and McCain will win it. And just over the line, Walker couldn’t keep it in. So this line’s going to stay together right now. It looks like Carolina might be down a player on the bench. I’m trying to see if Koke and Y is available. That would be who it would be if you look at how the line is shaped up here. Here’s Goss Bears running to out in front and a chance and it’s pitchfork just wide as Dow was all alone in front of Frederick Anderson. Anderson waved at it. Now Gosses bear gaines dodge a major bullet here starting overtime. Jarvis puts this on the tape of Hall. His shot doesn’t get through and has doubt. He’s able to clear but only as far as center. And now Carolina will be offside here with 1758 left here in overtime. It was Du Hane that set up that chance for Dow. Duh has had a super hockey game. Well, he has been all over this game. And the only thing that was beneficial when Du got it to Dow was he’s a righty, not a lefty. And it was more difficult to take that pass in one motion and get it towards the net. Just miss to the glove side. Oh yes. very coam is back out. So that’s a good sign. We’ll try to do a head count and find out who’s missing for maybe Janowski. Keep an eye cuz Kane on the line where Janowski was. Ker carries it in. Puck will be settled down by Kenami. Back for Chatfield. He gets a shot through. It was redirected and like a shorts stop scooping up a slow roller. Thompson able to get that one and hang on. Well, the gift to the world that the Stanley Cup playoffs are, you know, it was a tip that eventually won it for Lowry and the Jets on Sunday night. Yep. That was a good tip. Unfortunately, it really nipped any momentum of the puck right in the butt. AR tripped down a player. I think it’s probably Janowski. Stalls had their best faceoff night by a country mile on the ice right now. He is with Jarvis and Martin. Jackfield and Or 10 and three for Stall loses that [Applause] one. Washington is able to bounce this one back into the Kane zone. Or calmly turns it out. Washington Dow will chip at it. Dream Hay with it. They’ll drop it back. Mark Jianowski has an undisclosed injury. He will not return for the rest of the game after Kane’s media relations. Now Jarvis has it into the Washington zone. He’ll wrap it around the boards. Or will get to it behind the net. Martin Hook. It’ll come out right point. Slavven with a chance. They score. They score in overtime. Jacob Slavven lets it go from the point. Carolina has taken game number one here in Washington. Consume that moment big fella. Boy, I’ll tell you that puck had eyes. Slavven with all the shot blocks that Washington has had tonight. He got the puck through quickly. In particular, a really good high screen from Jarvis. If there’s a dust off from Slavven, Mike puck doesn’t get through with all of the shot blocks. 32 to be exact that Washington has had Slavven as a lefty really his offside which makes it even more impressive that he got it to the net after holding it in as quickly as he did. Layers on the way in specifically Jarvis and it beats Thompson low. Jarvis may have gotten a piece of it. It’s tough to tell. Either way, a tremendous screen and it beats Thompson between the legs and Carolina unequivocally deserved to win this game, but it took until overtime to do it. Great call. Oh my goodness. Better shot by Jacob Slavven. He was dangerous offensively all night. Can’t tell if Jarvis got a piece or not. You’ll take it any which way you can. from the center. Stone knocks down the entry pass forcing Edmonton into an offside position. Knights get the puck. Cory’s excuse me, Whiteclad flings and hit. Stone left for Eel. Miss Campbles the puck and he gave it away to Cory Perry as McDavid is scoop it up. Setting up dry side towards the middle. Hit a skate. Eiffel gets position on Perry. Scoops ahead. Two on two. Eiffel on the right to the third man. Stone known down the clock. scores two goals in the first period of game one for Mark Stone. Two nothing go tonight. 11 minutes to play in the first took it away from Terry. Created a twoon two. Stone was the trailer. Got the tap back on the right side. Took it right down the throat right toward Pickard. Beats him on the glove side for the nice second goal. Everybody does what they’re supposed to do here. Jack Ipel uses speed to get down into the zone. William Carlson middle lane drive pulls everybody with him which gives Stone lots of space and then Stone just waits and waits and then deep picker. Stone for Michael at 9:03 and the Knights have a two nothing leading for more. Puck up the slot. Theodore pulls and shoots. It’s blocked. rattles down the slot. Olivesson, but he couldn’t find the handle. Attempt to clear. Cut off by Pearson. Sets up Brad Howen left side. Howen spun off the puck momentarily. Pearson comes in to help. He limbs it hard around. It’ll go out to center and Theodore will grab it back with his own blue. Theodore banks it forward on time for Brett Hen. Three goals in the first round. And Pearson with some pressure, but the Oilers get it back ahead quickly. Heyman on the right side. Heman charges receiving left to the shot. Save Hill. Puck goes up the slot. Nurse pulls does not shoot. Hands it off Bard. Sausage back to the right for Nurse. He shoots. Missed the left post. Pikes off the far corner. Boards it out of the zone. All the way back to the Edmonton side. Halfway through the first period. Two nothing Vegas. Stone for Michael. Now for check by Hurle inside. Oilers get it out to the neutral zone. Kistar reached in. Gets the neutral zone takeaway. Kar settles the puck away from Conor Brown. The Knights defenders take over. Hey ahead for stop. He got cooked from behind by Trent Frederick. Henderson the cross check white cloud down in the offensive zone and then that little clip there. He plays on the edge all the time. Only one regular season game for Frederick with the Oilers. Traded on March 4th but of course was injured at the top. He’s got a delayed penalty sticking again against the Oilers. This time rather than behind the Edmonton goal, this one is behind the Davis goal. Diamond Barbesev this time. Four officials are examining Barbese as he reaches just under his left eye and the four officials will confer. This is all with 918 to go in the first two nothing Vegas lead. John Clingberg skating by wants an explanation. Looks like Kelly Sutherland will tell us. There’s no Kelly on the play. It’s a Vegas Vegas high ticket his teammate. There is no high sticking penalty. Okay. That’s what we thought on the first one when we got one replay, but another angle showed that. And in fact, Hurle actually got high stick by two people, one teammate and one opponent. And yeah, this was Tannne’s stick that got Barb. Trent Frederick was the Oilers player involved, but it was Hannip Stick that got farther. Two nothing Knights. 918 to go. First period. We’ll be right back. Presented by Le’s Discount Liquor. It’s the Vegas Golden Knights radio network. Better. Man, that check’s got to hurt. And the gloves are coming off. That’s a 100 bucks right there. That’s a grand. Hey, what’s with the dollar amounts? That’s how much each injury could be worth if he calls Morgan and Morgan. Yikes. That one’s got to be at least 10K. When you hire Morgan and Morgan, their gloves come off when they fight for you. Official partner of the Vegas Golden Knights. Injured? It’s the first game of the second round. How about this Gary? The Knights did not score the first goal of that playoff series two years ago until the closer game six and then they coughed up the lead and they were trailing two to one. In other words, the Oilers were the stronger early team in all of the games in that two. Michael comes in and shoots from the left wing. blocked. Contact between Stone and Fitler. The Oilers go the other way. Edmonton enters down the slot. No room to shoot though for Clayberg. The demon gets it on the right side. Throws it up top. Jake Walman flings it down low. Knights take it off the boards. Clayberg reached but could not play it. Carlson instead took it to the ninth. Played it to Theodore. Out to the left side of center. Jack Eel shoves it right. There’s Theodore. Hacks it down the boards trying to shake. Line changes brought to you by William Hill. Carlson out muscles a couple of Oilers to get to a loose puck, but ultimately it’s stolen away. Hurdle prevents an Oilers breakout. Tannifan back in his own blue. Forward to Hurdle. Backward to Whitecloud forward on the right to side. He tips it all the way in. Chris Knoblock has made a line change already for one line anyways. One shift anyways. Cory Perry not with Tri Cidle and David. It was Evander Kane. We wonder how often that’ll happen as Oilers dump it in. Cory Perry for the series averaging just under 14 minutes. McDavid and Dryidle averaging over 23 minutes. Of course, Perry is 40 years old. The fight for the puck goes in behind the net. White Cloud looking farboards finds Sod off the wall. Sod works ahead with Kasar and then Sod just ahead of the puck into the zone. So he’s offside. In other words, I guess Gary that Cory Kerry, even if the plan is to keep him with dry saddle and McDavid, he might not take every ship and you throw with Ander Kane up there or somebody else. Different look Perry a little bit. Just a possibility. Well, Kane’s out there right now with Heyman and Nan Hopkins. So, maybe you’re right, Dan. We saw we saw John Hines do a lot of that in the last series with Baldi and Capri off spotting them all over the lineup. For the record, Cory Terry turns 40 on May 16th, 10 days from now. So happy early 40th Cor only a few players in the NHL older than him this year. One of them retiring Mark Andre Sudter another and Bren Burns didn’t stay retired very long. No team in Canada. Vegas coming in. Here’s Nick W. packs his way to the left circle to the left side. Wall nichl with paid collides with Watt and the Oilers take it away. Barbashev defending alongside Corsette but the Oilers jump it in. Two nothing Knights. Just about 7 minutes to go first period. Vegas right to left. Olson comes in on the right with shooting save. Rebound off a D man. It goes behind the net. Oilers settle it there. Olivin prevents the breakout. Olives continuing to battle for the puck. knocks it loose for W. Finally, it comes to center, but Olson is there to send it right back in. You can’t complain about Victor’s compete so far in the playoffs. He’s really worked hard when he Oh, another steal for Olson. Two on one with Pearson. Pearson to Olson. Broken up on the back check. Conor Brown diving back toward his own goal prevented that pass from connecting Pearson to Olson. Tanner comes in on the left wing side now. Triple team left wall. Olson goes off. He’s exhausted after all that. Puck goes around. Here’s Stone from the bench. Fresh out to the right point. White clock. Shoot. Tips in front. Wide left. That was a high shot. Now Stone finds it on the left. Flies it right by the drive. Broken up by Walman. The attempt by Pearson. Howen tripped up all on the farboard. Oilers take the puck though with just over six minutes to play in the first. Two nothing. And the crowd reacts. The Knights have scored twice. and generated even more than that. Oilers through center booard and McDavid a back and forth. McDavid through the left circle run off McAd the hard hit on McDavid and Theodore plays the puck up the near board. Oilers prevent the clear back down the wall along the right wing side. McDavid dropped it off for Dryside who had four goals in game one two years ago against Vegas. Vegas still won the game by the way 64. Here’s Cory Perry the hot met by McN. Terry got it to dry citle on the right wing. The lefty feeds the point. Bush threw it down to the bottom of the right circle. McDavid leading on McNab. McNab defending him hard. Gets some help from Michael. McDam tapped it behind. It went through Perry out to the left point for Bushard. 25-year-old Dman. Sends it clockwise around the boards. Fight for the puck down the near side. Up top. It goes for Nurse who shoots wide left. Stone got to it before Bushard could not clear. Nurse cut it off at the line but an errant rink wide pass. missed the ice title. Carlson picks it up to the Knights and sends it through the neutral zone near B. Knights will change it up. Line changes brought to you by William Hill. Two nothing Knights. 445 to play first period. Victor Argenton comes ahead. Backhands the deep left corner. Hill waiting at the edge of the trapezoid. Pokes it from Wik. Corac over there along with Hurdle from the left wall. It’s sent back behind by Kulak the Oilers defenseman. Harson gets control. He’s centered. Collision of a loose puck and covered by Hill to his left by Coven into a shovel match. Punches in on Kak. He jumps in and the Lions do as [Applause] well. Hurdle recently bloodied with the high stick from Nan Hopkins earlier. He’s got scar just beneath his right eye. He was not afraid to jump into that skirmish. Now P Cen Corzac gives him a real good rough ride along the boards. But then P Cen he really goes after the younger Corzac and then Nick Hake steps in with those long arms and plays sheriff. Todd Cosen 211 hits during the regular season appeared in all 82 games. Of course that led the Oilers 50 more hits than Doug El Nur 24th in the entire league. That’s foden 23y old from Russia. Vegas 2 Edmonton 0427 to play first period presented by Le’s discount liquid. Vegas breaks out with its fourth line. Pearson to the goal. Drops it off. Hound it in front. Could have got a shot off. Swept away by Kane on the back check. Out of play. Well, the fourth line for the Knights. Pearson, Hound, and Olivesson creating a couple of looks here and doing exactly what you’d hope. the fourth line to do cause fits for the opposition. Newton Hopkins and Kane converged on Howen just as the puck got there. Good job by them on the back back check, but Tanner Pearson muscles by Clingberg gets that puck in the slot. One assist in three games so far for Pearson. He has nine career playoff goals. 54 previous playoff games. Here’s an icing whistle against against Edmonton. Of course, Pearson coming up with LA cup champion 2014. No, Alex Petrangelo today for Vegas. Lay scratch because of illness. So, Ken Corac makes his postseason debut. Appeared in 40 regular season games for Vegas, including the last five in the regular season. No goals, 10 assists in 40 games. Was plus 15. Corac paired with Nicholas Denn on the blue line today in the absence of Petangelo. He had been overtaken in time on ice by Noah Hann through the first six games of the playoffs. Petrangelo averaging 2231. Hannifan 2307 to lead the Golden. Oilers lose it after winning the draw. Hannipan shoots block wide left out of the near corner. Fight for the puck. Smith is there with Watt. Kulak steered it behind his own goal. allows John Cleberg to bank it out through center. Hannipan will grab it near the dot far side of his own zone. Forward Kevin Smith with W down to the left corner intended for Smith. Two Oilers are there to dig away. Breakout pass just misses. Barbashev attempting to steal it. Oilers coming back in. McDavid looking out in front. Score. Cole Terry. What a fake. McDavid on the right. Drew all the attention. And as Aiden Hill committed, Perry faked around him and slammed it into a vacated goal to get the Oilers on the board with 334 to play in the first. Two to1 Vegas. Cory Perry with his third goal of the [Applause] postseason. A great looking play by the Oilers. Great patience. Theodore somehow allows Cory Perry to get it behind him there. A great pass by McDavid. Yeah, he’s got to send he’s got to open up Lefty on the right wing and get it around McNap. And then Perry takes the pass, but the puck is bouncing. Impressive work by Perry to stay with that bouncing puck and slam it into the goal as Aiden Hill bit hard toward Perry in receiving the pass. Perry took a step toward the middle of the ice to put it home. Cory Perry, he cares about his person. He’s fantastic in that area of the ice. Always has been and has not lost any of that. Stanley Cup champion in 2007. He was drafted by the Ducks in 2003 first round pick. So it’s two to one. Knights look for a response goal. Here’s Hurdle behind the net. Scored the first goal of the playoffs for the Golden Knights. Up top, Corzac shoots redirect in front. Goes wide left. He’s getting a lot of players around Cal Picker. Certainly in contrast to the first round series against Minnesota against now. Another try by Corzak that misses the goal. Cole’s star hurdler there in the trapezoid. Hurdle stripped by Henry. He was a third round pick of New Jersey in 2008. Another veteran. 35 years old is Henry. Takes up the entry for Conor Brown. Tester along the farboards by Corzac. McDavid now on it. Send it around the rim. McDavid and Dry Sidle record assist on the goal by Perry. Dry Cidle up to 11 points and McDavid to 12. Stone finds a loose puck far side. works ahead with Carlson. Stone dumps it in. Carlson swims through the defense and gets to the puck, but then he backhands it to the near corner and Dryidle. Nearly gave it away, but it’s found the stick of Booard in front of the Oilers goal. Edmonton dumps it in. Hill behind his net looked out to the far side but missed the intended target. Fedor Perry takes it for the Oilers. Left point Nurse’s pass intercepted by Stone. Stone trying to work it out towards center. He does bank it out only as far as the red line intended for Eel. Oilers back in. Here’s McDavid towards Perry trying to wrap it around and it’s deflected away by Theodore. Go off its pen. Hill came back hard against the near side post as Perry went around the opposite side post never came off. The goal swinging like a gate open on the near side. The defense by Theodore sure that the puck would not have gone in had the stay on his legs. Yeah. Yeah. That’s a hell of a play by Cory Perry. Now you can see the intensity of Aiden Hill Gary. There there have been now 10 shots for the Oilers, but clearly aggressive too much so on the Perry goal. And here so aggressive that he takes his own goal off the banks. 90 seconds to go first. By the way, we’ll have the commissioner of the NHL, Gary Bentman, join us at the end of this period. So stick around for the commissioner with the two to1 Vegas lead with a minute 20 to go in the first. Knights clear the zone. Still from Carlton in fever on the power field. Still from Michael to make it two nothing. Then Perry from McDavid in dry 1626. Two to one night in game one. Olston with a steal on the back check. Hamilton finds the puck forward to Olson. Bump by Heman. Got it to Howen. out and shoots Dave Pickard and he holds on a bit awkwardly. Took it in the torso going down to the butterfly. Puck disappeared between his knees. Brad Howen and Cal Pickard who would have known each other most of their lives growing up in Manitoba. Cal right in Winnipeg and Brett in Oak Bank which is for our Vegas listeners it’s like from Summerland a little Centennial Centennial it’s from Centennial Hills to the strip Vegas gets a faceoff win on the right white clouds attempt got blocked for the final minute brought to you by credit one to go two to one now bouncing puck near the right corner Pearson Olivesson and Hen low to High for White Cloud. Link wide left hand. He shoots. Remember, but it ends up on the right wing. Whitecloud pinches in. Got it to Howen. Tried a centering pass. Broken up by Nert. Takes it behind his own goal. Olson and Hen come in. They collide. Puck stays on the near board. Sod tried to keep it alive, but it goes to neutral ice. Skated forward by Trent Frederick looking right circle. Frederick’s got it himself and tried to center, but it’s knocked away. Vegas gets it out. side with 15 seconds to go. Sod across the line, kicks it up to himself. Couldn’t get a shot away and he drops it in front. Nobody home for the night. Just a step late was Hurdle. 5 seconds to go. Lots of Oilers around the net as the goalie Pickard ended up way out of his free. First period comes to a close. It’s 2-1 Vegas. Stone with his third and fourth of the playoffs. Two nothing Knights through the first half of the period, but Cory Terry got one with three and a half to go in the period and it’s two to one Vegas after one. Well, excellent period of hockey, fastpaced, aggressive, and while these teams, you know, they only see each other four times a year and it took a while the last time they meant to for respect to give way to contempt. I don’t think it’s going to take that long. And I think that uh this one is uh it will not Edmonton really thinks it owes Vegas something. Conor McDavid’s you know first recorded comments after the Oilers beat LA. He told Gene Prince on Hockey Night in Canada. We owe Vegas a good series. We haven’t forgot about two years ago. And both these teams believe they’re contenders. Believe they can get to the Stanley Cup and win the Stanley Cup. They got to get by one another. We expect to hear from Commissioner Gary Bentman momentarily. Stand by for commissioner. First, a special thank you to today’s game title partner, Credit One Bank. Credit One Bank is of course game one title partner and they supported the Rally for the Realm Battle towels handed out to every fan tonight. So, thank you from the Knights to Credit One Bank. Knights scored not once but twice in the first period. So, you get free fries tomorrow at your local McDonald’s. Just download the mobile app. You get free fries from your local McDonald’s. Again, download the mobile app. Free fries any size tomorrow at your local McDonald’s. All thanks to pair of goals from the captain Mark Stone in the opening period, his third and fourth of the postseason as the Knights look to take an early edge here in the second round. They had done so in the first round, winning game one against Minnesota. They had of course then lost games two and three with that was spotted by winning the last three of the first round. Edmonton won the last four against the LA Kings. Edmonton that was they were on the ropes in that series and some you know interesting moments that took place there. a a a goal goalie interference challenge from Jim Hiller against the Oilers that backfired and did didn’t work and it allowed it allowed Edmonton to get back into that game and then you know Quinton Biffield has an opportunity to get get a puck out late in I believe it was game five does not get it out and the Oilers are able to score with the goalie out win in that game and then of course they went in and you know they they handled Ellie quite handily in game six. So Gary the notable absent players for Vegas the defenseman who led the team in time on ice in the regular season two time Cup champion Alex Petrangelo and their top regular season goal scorer Pavl Doria 35 goals and both of those players unavailable today. Doria injured Petrangelo because of illness. Knights still look pretty good even without those two very important players. Yeah. And you know this line that Bruce Cassidy invented uh with the combination of Carlson Eel and Stone. They they they got going late in that series against Minnesota and now they continue to rev up. And you know, it’s good to see Mark Stone put the puck in the net twice in this game. And there was a you kind of wondered a little bit in the first round how motivated or hungry Bruce Cassidy was. That’s a comment that uh that that sorry that the Golden Knights were that Bruce made and they look real good early on tonight. We are now joined in the broadcast booth by the commissioner of the National Hockey League, Mr. Terry Fman as the Knights lead the Oilers 2-1 after the first period of play. Just getting started here in game one of the second round. Mr. Commissioner, how are you? No. Do we uh do we not hear the commissioner? Do we not have There we are. Now I’m doing better than I was a few seconds ago. Uh it’s great to be here. It’s always fun to take in a game here and this should be an incredible series and we had a great first round. I mean, last weekend in particular was unbelievable. That was going to be my first question. What do you think of the playoffs here so far? Yeah. I mean, you know, I mean, game sevens on backto-back days, you can only dream of that sort of stuff. Well, and the way those game sevens played out, not with respect to who won or not, but how close they were and and how unpredictable they were right down to the end. I am the rare media advocate for the current playoff format. And the the first two weeks of the Stanley Cup playoffs are the greatest thing in professional sports. The greatest thing. Why would anybody want to change the format other than to change it for the sake of change? Look at the quality of play. Look at how entertaining uh all of the series were. We had no sweeps. We had what five series that have went at least six. Uh we had two game sevens. It was incredible. The excitement of course has been on display. I agree with everything you just said to me is like you really have caught lightning in a bottle. There is nothing better in pro sport than those two weeks. And but we’re biased. No, we’re not. And and not not to discount what we’re watching tonight. Like all the teams that are still alive are all contenders. Absolutely. Like this is the president’s trophy team gets pushed to 1.6 seconds of being out and but they’re still alive. Like wow. Well, and there are teams that got eliminated in the first round that were contenders. Well, that’s one of the other great things about the NHL. The 16 teams that make the playoffs are all good and we don’t need any more in. We don’t need any stupid play eight, nine, 10 playoff games. 16 teams, four rounds, best four out of seven. You hand out the cup in perpetuity. How do you really feel about it? I didn’t mean it. Gary’s on his soap box here. There’s some silly rumor that you might retire, but hopefully not for another 10 years, but keep handing the cup out. Where did that rumor come from? I don’t know. You look fantastic, by the way. Thank you. Yes, I’m I’m working on it. You know, my age, you got to stay in shape. Commissioner, I do want to ask you to to clarify something. You said recently that there’s been some media confusion about what’s happening with the New York Islanders and the events there. Can you give us some clarity there because I know you’ve said there’s been some confusion. Well, uh, we had a session a week ago, I guess, with the AP sports editors, and I believe it was the editor from News Day who asked me about what event we were going to do. And I didn’t say anything different than I’ve been saying for the last two months. In light of what happened with Four Nations, uh we want to make sure that whatever we do uh for on Long Island at UBS, for the Islanders, for a quote allstar event has to be as special. It has to reach the standards that we’ve now set for what all-star games should be. And we’re very focused on the fact that the players are going to be leaving from whatever event we do next February to to be they’re going to be focused on going to the Olympics in Milan. So, we want to do something that really is indicative of what people can expect to see. And we’re going to come back with another quote allstar event the following year. We just decided that we need to move things around and change it up to make sure we’re giving the fans and the players the appropriate platform. So nimble and adapting to change as need be, but staying true to tradition in other ways as Gary outlined. So always, you know, but but you know, sometimes people are just looking for a story and that’s okay. That’s the story is the NHL is fantastic and you’ve had a wonderful tenure as commissioner and it should continue. Well, that’s very nice of you to say it. It’s always good to be Wow. It’s almost like we want you to come back again on the I like being the third best Gary in the NHL. Benman Mahar Lawless. I might get bumped. I I think it’s a I think it’s a hat-tick. No, but it’s it’s all good. You know, tomorrow I have an event to do in the morning in Salt Lake City relative to the uniform and the name. And then tomorrow night I’m going to be in your old stomping ground up in the peg. Excellent. So So it’s all good. And I mean to have the opportunity to go to these games. Why would I want to retire? I get to do this for a living. Awesome. And you get to talk to people like us. Absolutely. But I didn’t get to talk to him. I was listening to him lecture us on how good things are. That’s why now you know how I feel. That’s why that’s why we love Mr. Lawless. He’s great. Gary and Gary, thank you so much. Great to be with you as always and it’s always fun to be in this building. The game presentation is spectacular and obviously what goes on the ice uh historically through the history of this franchise has been competitive and exciting and you know you got the Stanley Cup banner to back that up. the commissioner of the National Hockey League, Gary B. Back to the fortress for more Vegas Golden Knights action with Dan Duva and Gary Lawless. Three goals in the game total. They all came in the first stone with a power play goal at 213. Stone at even strength at 9:03. Cory Perry for the Oilers at 1626 and it was two to1 after one. Nobody has scored here in the second period with less than a minute to play from the draw in the neutral zone. Carlson trying to go over the top of McDavid to poke a deep didn’t work. Ooilers coming ahead right to left side try to dump it in. Could not get it all the way deep to Theodore to grab it. The motive behind his own goal. Send it around to Carlson and then the Knights lose control of the puck. Stone and Eel. Oilers conversion. The shot blocked by Stone. Down to 17 seconds. Stone breaks up a pass. Bousard keeps it in. Theodore trying to play it up the boards. Now McDavid’s pass ends up on the right. Kulak shoots. Blocked. McNabing away and it ends up out of play. Yeah, the puck management for Vegas the last couple of minutes has been pretty sloppy. This one just a miscommunication for those players coming out of the Knight’s defensive zone. Stone and Eel, they just couldn’t quite get it cleanly. Just a foot away from coming out of the zone at this time. At this point of the period, we just go north. Again, I think back, Gary, to some of the games from that series two years ago. Knights had trailed one- nothing, then scored three in a row to take a 3-2 lead in the first. Leon Dryle scored with 11 seconds to go in the first period, his second of four in the game. From the draw, shot is blocked and the rebound cleared out by Tolasar and the Knights survived. Oilers heavy. Second period here. Still Vegas 2, Edmonton 1. 40 minutes complete in game two. Gary, how would you like a quick review of the regular season? Sure. Oilers scored 11 goals against Vegas in the regular season. Nine out of those 11 came in the second period. Vegas only scored two of its 10 goals in the second period. In other words, Oilers dominated the second period in the regular season here today. Nobody scores. So, uh, even though the Oilers had the better chances to power plays, I suppose you take that as a win. Well, if this is correct, the one shot in the period, Vegas has never been held to zero shots in a playoff period. This could be a record being held to just one shot in a period in regulation. Yeah, of course these numbers are not official until later on. So perhaps they will adjust. The Knights did have more attempts. It’s not as though the Oilers completely controlled the period, but uh yeah, they had better chances. Certainly a better second for the Oilers than it was in the first where the Knights scored two. Cory Perry got one back for the Oilers, but the Knights very much had a better play in the first. Oilers had a better play in the second. Then we go to the third period where the Knights have been uh very good in the regular season, but Gary, that has been the Oilers mo in the postseason. They outscored the Kings in the third period, 146. 14-6. The Oilers outscored the Kings during the first round. Of course, the Knights will try to keep that number at bay. Of course, they were the best regular season third period team. Okay, we’re ready to go down to the Golden Knights dressing room and welcome defenseman Nicholas H. Nick, Dan, and Gary in the radio booth. Thanks for joining us. What do you make of the game tonight so far? Uh, I think there’s a lot of stuff we can clean up right now. Uh, there’s our execution’s not where it needs to be. So, I think uh we clean up our plays and uh you we’ll get going in the in the offenses on a little bit more here. And when did you find out your partner, Alex Petranelo, wasn’t going to play? Uh, I mean, pretty shortly uh before the game, probably, you know, just before warm-ups kind of thing. And what’s that like for you and for Kaden Corzac to make that adjustment on the fly? Yeah, I think it’s tougher for Corsy, honestly. Um, you know, he’s he’s, you know, done a great job and, uh, you know, you always got to stay ready, right? you never know what kind of stuff, you know, can happen. And, uh, so good for him, uh, you know, to show up and be ready to go. And, um, I mean, it’s not always the easiest thing. Uh, but, you know, I I think he’s done a great job. Great job on the kill by all you guys without Alex who’s usually right in the mix there. Uh, yeah, it feels good to, you know, obviously they got some dangerous players and, uh, uh, you know, you know, a great power play. So, um, you know, it feels good to be able to get the job done there on that and, uh, you know, that’s going to come up big for us if, uh, if we want to be on the right side of this game. And a lead going to the third. Nick, thanks. Good luck. Thanks, Chris. Nicholas Hay from the Vegas dressing room. Today, his 40th career playoff game. He appeared in 68 out of 82 this regular season and all seven here in the playoffs. Remember, Nick was injured first game, round one last year against the Dallas Stars. Vegas did not advance. So he was of course out for the rest of the postseason as it turned out. But here he has played in each of the seven postseason games so far. One assist and averaging just under 17 minutes per game. In the regular season he averaged exactly 17 minutes. No Petrangelo today because of an illness. And as Nick just told you didn’t know that that was going to be the case until right before warm-ups. Corac goes in for his postseason debut. Hey and Corzac. The third pair for the night today. Hannah and Whitecloud plus McNab and Theor as usual. Vegas 2, Edmonton 1 after 40 minutes of play. Shots in the period again unofficial. So they go back and check some stuff, but Edmonton 12, Vegas 1. Game total Edmonton 22, Vegas 11. Nice power play is one for two. Oilers power play 0 for two. Today, the intermission report, the Golden Knights lead the Edmonton Oilers two to one after two periods of play. Take a look at the highlights in this game. We go back to the first period and the Golden Knights took advantage of an early power play opportunity and open the scoring with Mark Stone’s power play goal to the right half wall again for Olivet. He shoots. Score. Power play goal. Mark Stone parked at the left side of the crease. Vegas has the first goal of round two. Third goal of the postseason on the power play for Mark Stone from William Carlson and Shay Theodore. 213 of the first period. Made it one to nothing Vegas. And the Golden Knights extended their lead on a when Jack Eel set up Mark Stone in transition. Harry speeds ahead. Two on two. I go on the right to the third base. Stone down the clock. Scores. Two goals in the first of game one for Mark Stone. Two nothing goal tonight. 11 minutes to play in the first second of the period. Fourth of the postseason for Mark Stone from Jack Eel. 9003 the first period. Made it two to nothing Vegas. But the Oilers got on the board late in the first period after Conor McDavid set up Cory Perry alone in front of the net. Oilers coming back in. McDavid looking out in front. Score. Cory Perry. What a fake. McDavid on the right. Drew all the attention. Two to one Vegas. Cory Perry with his third goal of the postseason. Cory Perry from Conor McDavid and Leon Dryidle. 1626 of the first period. Made it two to one Vegas. And that’s where we stand. No scoring in that second period on either side. Take a look at the out of town scoreboard. The Hurricanes come back to beat the Capitals two to one in overtime. Carolina leads that series one game to none. The semi-finals are Friday and title game is Sunday with tickets available at lefamilyforum.com. Tina mission report. The Golden Knights up two to one on the Edmonton Oilers after two periods of play. Stats of the period shots 12 to1 the edge to the Edmonton Oilers. That’s right. 12-1 in favor of Edmonton. Hit 27 to 22 Vegas for the game. The Oilers are 0 for two on the power play. Vegas one for two on the man advantage. Edmonton charged with nine giveaways, two takeaways, 10 block shots. Vegas, six giveaways, two takeaways, 13 block shots. And it’s pretty simple here. It was a strong push in the middle frame by the Edmonton Oilers, aided in part by two power play opportunities, but the best player on the ice on either side of the ledger in that second period was Aiden Hill. He was excellent in in stopping all 12 shots that he saw from the Oilers. There’s there’s a there’s an air about Aiden when he’s locked in when he’s dialed in. He certainly was there in the second period for the Golden Knights. And even though the shot clock was heavily favored by the Edmonton Oilers, skewed toward the Edmonton Oilers, I thought the Golden Knights did a pretty good job of limiting the dangerous chances, the quality chances. However, the Golden Knights, no way around this, need to be better in the third period. You cannot sit back on a lead. You cannot hope to get this one across the goal line by playing prevent defense, so to speak. You’ve got to get on your horse. You’ve got to force plays in the offensive zone and you got to get back to for checking. That’s what I’m looking for here in the third. Third period action is coming up next.
