  1. Everyone loves the Hometown hero story, but we can’t complain about the country club mindset for years and then not choose the number one projected player. If Hagan really wants to play for the Islanders, he’ll find a way to get here at some point.

  2. I have yet to see one review of Matthew Shaefer that speaks about anything but his offensive abilities. He is a defenseman! Can anyone speak about his defensive prowess or lack thereof? Is he NHL ready?

  3. Schaefer didn’t come out of nowhere. He was the 1st overall pick in the OHL draft. Last year he dealt with some truly horrible stuff off the ice, losing his mother and billet mother.

As far as injuries, it was a broken clavicle. Not exactly the type of thing that warrants injury risk like an acl or concussions. Oh and he had mono…again, not a concern.

But yeah dealing with all that personal shit and then coming back this year from mono and looking like an absolute stud showed a lot about how resilient this kid is. He’s my guy at 1, for sure.

  4. Maybe grab Hagens and maybe try and trade back into first and grab Radim Mrtka the dude is huge! And he’s a good defenseman. Not for anything but the injuries scare me especially when he gets into the big league

  5. It’s either Schaeffer or Misa but I’m going with the best player available and that’s Mathew Schaefer. Respect to Hagens but he’s not worth 1st overall. Do not let your emotions get the best of you. Do not overthink it. Schaeffer for me to be a potential franchise 2-way defenseman.

  6. You have to trust your scouts. The reality is, the projections aren't always right; players don't always develop as they "should". I remember in 1993, Alexandre Daigle was supposed to be the second coming for the NHL. It doesn't always go the way you think – it really is a crapshoot. I'm just hoping for the best with whoever we take.

  7. only 1 defenseman has been picked number one since 2007 you do not pick defenseman as the number 1 pick in the nhl draft

  8. He broke his collarbone. It's not like he pulled a muscle and kept getting injured, or injured his knee

  9. The Islanders should draft the islander, James Hagens. Schaefer is too young, too few games. Hagens will get the fan base excited and create the best local buzz. Forget about what the Canadian media thinks. It will take years for Schaefer to come into his own.

  10. wow they rave like schaefer is the next orr. if isles don't want to fill that huge black hole up front they have for way too long then take schaefer. its as simple as that. sj has fwds., need d men. Isles have d men and a goalie, need explosive fwds. you do like avs did you get the fwds. then add makar and contend win a cup. Or do like sabres did draft a schaefer like d man without the fwds. and miss the playoffs all 7 seasons. and hedman, doughty, makar, hughes did not go no. one. Stamkos and pj boy went ahead of doughty, hedman. You take the goal scorer first. I'd hate to think what would have happened to isles if they snubbed their nose up at the g scoring ability of bossy. And d men like fwds. are more plentiful every draft. isles don't need no d man just because he can rush the puck. misa can do that himself and has silky hands.

  11. Matt – I like your idea of trading down to SJS, get Davidson from Sharks, then pick up Misa. Having two snipers like Misa and Eiserman in the pipeline would be super exciting. We haven't had even ONE sniper since Ziggy.

  12. Defensemen picked at #1 haven't usually turned out great. Potvin was an exception. Dahlin looks like he might be great. Hedman & Doughty picked at 2 have also been great. But thinking back on other #1 picked defensemen (Erik Johnson, Chris Phillips, Ekblad, Jovanoski, Hamrlik), they've had good careers but haven't been franchise makers. Maybe the qualities that make for a great defenseman don't become apparent till later on. Remember when Potvin was picked, that was a 20 year old draft. Johnson was supposed to be Ray Bourque. Owen Power it's too early to tell. I'm leaning to Misa as the better pick because I think 18 is too young to tell with defensemen,

  13. I’ve seen Schaeffer compared to Jake Sanderson and I’ve seen Michael Mesa compared to Brayden point. I love Sanderson as a player but I’ll take a Brayden Point on the Isles 7 days a week.l!
