Nhl is a rigged joke
This year's draft is garbage. Next year is gonna be wild as Gavin McKenna becomes eligible.
I feel like the Islanders were barely mentioned in this
Steve, I'll give you the 'end of discussion' reason why SJ doesn't trade the pick and you said it literally just before the 'to trade or not to trade segment'. Every team wants to pick first next year. Why would SJ trade the pick for a solid NHL player when they could get a high end prospect that'll be a couple years away from a serious impact. Keeping the pick makes San Jose worse next year, keeping the pick gives them a better shot at McKenna.
The Penguins are looking like the Blackhawks were at the end of Bowmans reign. Caught between trying to have one last hurrah for your aging superstars and desperately needing to rebuild, all with very little ammo to do either.
If Lou Lamoriello was still in charge I would expect the Isles to trade the #1 pick for a 31-year old 3rd line center.
say his name and he appears, i believe in Bill Daly
Happy for the Isles to win 1st overall.
Which team was it, that traded the 4th overall pick to the Isles so they could draft Luongo? It was the Maple Leafs who traded 4th overall to acquire Wendel Clark after trading him away to Quebec, so Leafs could pick up Sundin. But this isn't about Leaf bashing, that I'm pointing this out. This is about the fact that the Nordiques, at the time, had Sakic, Sundin and had just drafted Lindros ALL at the same time.
"If you had any concerns the NHL rigged the draft lottery, this just disproved that. The NHL doesnt care about the Islanders." – THG
Second overall, Will Smith, and Tyler Toffoli for Petterson and Raty.
Good for the franchise….but they'll still be mired in mediocrity. That team hasn't been run well and can't land a real star.
Leafs let Tavares go and bring in Sid the Kid
3:50 Guys… The 5 year issue is about winning the lottery twice, not about picking first twice. Sharks haven't won the lottery (ever) so they're very much in on both McKenna and Dupont even. Also, on Grier trading the first overall this year if they had it – he was basically saying that the odds of trading it were greater than in 2024, in that they went from .01% to .05%. The price would still be astronomical, it never would have happened.
Quinton Musty is a shark from Sudbury Wolves
Are you saying you didn’t know who Ken Morrow is? All of you turn in your jerseys. Wow….i mean……wow.
If San Jose could have landed Schaefer they would have had every major important piece for an elite team in the system. That said, I wouldnt be totally shocked to see the NYI do something crazy and take the local kid Hagens 1st
Odds this 1st overall pick for NYI signs in Toronto as a UFA?
There's a chance The Islanders will one day play entertaining hockey. Been a while.
Utah also won. You can't move up more then 10 spots. They went 14 to 4. I know its not 1 but they went from outside of 10 to inside of 5.
Pittsburgh also gets the Rangers 1st round pick and yes the 1st pick is calgary that went to Montreal because flames traded panthers 1st round pick from the tkchuck trade to with monahan to Montreal for future considerations. Conditions on that trade where Montreal gets to take the better of flames are panthers 1st round pick. Flames didn't make the playoffs so Montreal gets flames pick at 16th overall.
Interesting lost the NHL All Star Game and magically win the draft what a coincidence. There are no coincidences!!!!!
The conspiracies never stopped. Locked in the pens are getting McKenna with Crosby at the end of his career and they have 2 first round picks there will be another superstar transition period just like Lemieux to Crosby
It's not that complicated, and actually Dubas has been very straightforward with their approach, if you watch his press conferences — it's not a tear-it-down rebuild, it's a couple season retool a la Washington, LA, etc. Dubas has also explicitly said they want to return the team to contention, but making the playoffs just to say you made it and getting bounced in the 1st round is not the goal. This has been the direction since the Guentzel trade. They're never going to be first overall bad while they have 87, straight up. They don't get rid of Sullivan if they're planning on returning to the playoffs next season, but I think they'll really start going for it more aggressively the following season — hence holding on to your core of vets, who say they want to remain there. If you trade all the vets, your culture is gone, and then you have to build that all back up again, and your rebuild drags on endlessly a la Detroit, San Jose, Buffalo, etc. This coming season will be about bringing some prospects along, new coaching staff, hopefully rebuilding the d-core, and figuring out or hopefully moving on from Jarry. I imagine one more season of finishing in that bad-to-mid range, and then maybe they turn the page and get aggressive again.
I find the lottery system absolutely absurd…there is no reason a team like the Islanders should have the 1st overall pick. Period. What this will do is extend rebuild periods for teams in the doldrums. The Preds, for instance, just had their 2nd worst season in franchise history and now pick 5th. The Preds have also never had a 1st overall pick…even in their inaugural draft, they had to trade up to #2 for David Legwand, their highest pick to date.
Going to tigers games Makenna is worth hype. Willy perfect coach for him as well though.
The Penguins 1st from the Rangers slides to next year only if the Rangers so choose. They have yet to make that decision.
Since next year's would be unprotected, it depends how well they think they'll do under Sullivan.
Gavin McKenna is also Connor Bedards cousin
Is it they don't want to trade Crosby, or Crosby doesn't want to be traded? He has a NMC, period. Or did you forget the Marner situation so quickly?
I disagree. Misa could be #2 center & move smith to the wing
You guys should watch the penguins and dubas end of the year presser you very clearly says its rebuild/retool stage, he wont be signing big name free agents, he wants young guys with term he wants to build towards making rhe pens a name stay in the playoffs for gears to come, next three years will be acquiring RFAs with term and developing the many draft picks they have over the next 3 years too.
Sid very clearly knows whats going on to he pretty much foreshadowed Sullivans firing when he said "the worst part of losing isnt necessarily the losing but the trickle down effect of what happens when you lose"
The Islanders will draft the next John Tavares, and the Leafs will eventually pick him up for nothing in free agency.
as an isles fan i say draft schaefer and either trade for hagens, or pray to god for an adam fox situation. eisy and him have history, and in terms of trading, is doable.
