Eric Staal joining Kevyn Adams in the Buffalo Sabres front office is offensive
Sabres did some front office maneuvering today that I do not believe made a lot of people happy and I will raise my hand as being a part of that list. Eric Stall back to the organization. Some rumors, some reports on other things in the front office and Boyram. A lot to get to on today’s Locked Sabres podcast. You know, today might be a fiery day. You know, I I never know what’s going to really get me rolling because this team is a team that can suck the life out of you over the last 14 years. It’s a team that you can kind of struggle to garner any anger about and emotion in the first place. And then there are other times where you just remember how much you care about this team. And when they do something you don’t like, all of that energy of the 14 years kind of comes together into one thing. And that might happen today because the Buffalo Sabres are doing their front office shakeup, I guess, before our eyes. And it begins with Eric Stall. Where it ends, we don’t know. It could end with Rick Dudley. I don’t want to spend a lot of time on that today. Today is more about the things that we have learned about. But one of the things that we have learned about is that Elliot Freriedman said on 32 thoughts this morning that the Sabres will be looking for a senior advisor to work with Kevin Adams that has been in the GM chair before. That was the best news I’ve heard all day. I didn’t know or wasn’t confident that Sabres would actually do that. They still haven’t. So, I guess a little bit of believe it when I see it. But what this team needs, if you ask anybody, is probably get somebody in that front office that has done the job before that has experience. It’s been 40 years since they’ve hired a general manager into the GM seat with experience. At least have somebody in the organization that has done it before. So I see that the first thought that I had and others had the same thought I saw Matt Oy tweeted out immediately after this report from Freriedman this uh conversation more so in 32 thoughts happened was Rick Dudley. Rick Dudley who if you go way back into the fall we did a show where I how many names did I break down? Was it a dozen? Was it 20 potential GM replacements for the Buffalo Sabres to Kevin Adams and Dudley was one of the names we talked about because he has done the job before. Now the Sabres are keeping Kevin Adams. That was another part of Freed Mitten’s report. We knew that. But he’s staying on. So we’re not talking about a GM replacement. But when you hear a senior advisor to Adams that has done the job before, I don’t know how your mind couldn’t go immediately to Rick Dudley, former Buffalo Sabres player, a longtime executive in the National Hockey League, including several stints as a general manager, whether that was with the Ottawa Senators or with the Tampa Bay Lightning or with the Atlanta Thrashers for a here. He has been a GM in multiple stints with different organizations. Dudley also is 76 years old. And when you hear senior advisor with GM experience, I don’t think you will think of guys that are in their 50s and maybe even into their early 60s that would have ambitions to be a general manager again. They’re not going to go hire, you know, some other teams. Jason Botil who like Rob Blake has come up. I don’t think they’re hiring Rob Blake. Rob Blake who has been a general manager for the LA Kings um for many many years and is now available. Um he was fired on two days ago. They parted ways, however they worded it, but he had been the general manager since 2017. uh they’re not hiring Rob Blake because Rob Blake is only 55 years old and I would bet has the ambition to be a GM again. So I think Dudley fits that bill because he’s 76. He hasn’t been a GM in 15 years. He knows he’s not going to be a GM again. And it is the same exact title that he currently occupies in Florida. Dudley’s official title right now for the Florida Panthers is senior adviser. So, there’s that. He also lives locally and he lives up in Lewon. So, that works out. He’d have to want to work for the Sabres instead of working for the Florida Panthers. And maybe he doesn’t want to do that, but that was the first name that I thought of was Dudley. Now, that’s one part of today is they’re going to bring on a senior adviser or they’re at least going to hope to. They kind of have to now because if they don’t, it’ll look like, well, you tried to and you failed. And that’s another feather in the cap of well yeah they can’t attract anybody of credibility to come work for this organization. And that’s where we start with Eric Stall. Freriedman says Stall’s going to join the organization. And sure enough within a couple of minutes the Sabres have announced that Eric Stall is officially going to be the special assistant to the general manager. I want to make that clear. He is not the assistant general manager. We got a little bit of a Dwight Shrew situation here where Dwight Shrew, if you’re not an office fan throughout the whole episode, it was a joke that he called himself assistant manager, but everyone knew his real title and would joke with him is assistant to the G to the manager. Well, that’s Eric Stall. He is a special assistant to the general manager. Will assist in scouting and player development and and yada yada yada. Eric Stall’s in the organization. no executive experience before to speak of at all. He is now working underneath Kevin Adams. He played for this team of course during the co year in the spring of 2021. He was traded at the deadline and I hope they don’t believe that is their way to establish credibility in the front office. Eric Stall is a credible name in the hockey world as a player, but if you’re trying to bring in credibility into your front office, you do not do that, you do not get that, I should say, by hiring somebody that has zero experience in that position, in that front office. So to me, the only purpose that this serves, Eric Stall being in the organization, is to show a level of tonedeafness from the Buffalo Sabres and Kevin Adams because I I don’t want to go too far with this point. This is a little bit of an overreaction Wednesday. I don’t actually think Eric Stall being in the organization harms the Buffalo Sabres in any way. And I’m sure there are a ton of fans that don’t care at all that whatever. Eric Stall, who cares? 2006 was a long time ago. There are also a lot of fans, and it’s easy for me to check back into this mode. A lot of fans that are offended at the idea that he works for the team. that the same people that were offended that Eric Stall played in that uniform, which to me is still one of the grossest things that has happened during the Buffalo Sabres drought, is that they allowed that player from that team, the most one of the most despised teams, hated teams, and so on and so forth, teams a Saber fan has ever seen, played for this organization, now works for this organization. Eric Stall might be a great guy. No offense to him, but sorry, you were on that team. Uh if in my opinion, you shouldn’t work for the Buffalo Sabres. Kevin Adams gets I guess a special exemption because he he you know he worked here for years and he is from here. Um, but the last thing any Saber fan needs right now with the the the the energy level and the tone and the excitement, all of that being in the gutter for this organization right now, hiring a dude that every one of your fans hates is just a a twist of the knife. It really is. Just Yeah. Like if as if you guys couldn’t go lower. Oh, you fell two spots in the lottery two nights ago. Oh, watch this. We’re going to hire Eric Stall. I mean, I had some of the jokes on social media earlier and a lot of other people did. What’s next? They’re going to hire Brett Hall to work for the organization. Are they going to hire Milan Luchich to work for the organization? I mean, I can just run down the 06 Hurricanes roster. Go hire Brett Hedkin. Go hire Cam Ward to be the goalie coach. Glenn Wesley, Chad Larose, just Mike Commodore. Hire them all. Hire the 06 Hurricanes to run this organization. Sweet. That’ll make your fans feel great because it’s just a reminder that that was our cup. That was our cup. It was all the injuries. It’s the only reason Carolina won that Stanley Cup. It’s the only reason they have a banner up there in the rafters is injuries. I mean, you could extend that even to the finals when Dwayne Rollolson got hurt for the Edmonton Oilers. that team that that Hurricanes team brings only negative feelings from your fan base. So, you hired one of them. Again, I know I’m overreacting. I know it doesn’t actually have a serious impact, but hey, if there’s any energy left in me about this hockey team, uh, it definitely will come out if you bring up the 2006 Hurricanes the same way it would if you brought up the early 2010s Boston Bruins or, you know, uh, uh, for my dad or somebody of my dad’s age, if you brought up Brad Park in the Boston Bruins from the 1980s or I mean Darius Casperitis in the Penguins in the early, it would all be the same. So, I don’t know. I I hate it. I absolutely hate it. And I think it could be offset by them doing an actual meaningful thing because again, I want to reiterate, I don’t think Stall, whether he works for the team or not, is actually meaningful to what happens with this organization. I guess what are they really hoping for from him? They’re hoping that he does establish a little bit of credibility and he makes it maybe they think he makes it easier to get players to come here. he could have conversations with guys around the league that Eric Stall knows and maybe they just want him around the young guys, you know, like another positive influence. Uh, a longtime NHLer that knows what it takes to win, uh, which is the other team’s defenseman getting injured one after another until you get to five defenseman getting injured, uh, is what it takes to win. Um, of course, I don’t know. I don’t know. I hate it. I hate Eric Stall working for this organization, but he does. and whatever. If he can help in any way get this team out of the playoff drought, then I guess that’ll uh that’ll make up for a tiny insy peeny bit of them having their Stanley Cup rings. But anyways, Eric Stall working for the front office. Oh, one other thing to get to in the front office. I want to get to the Bo Byum thing that Craig Rey um said on his podcast yesterday. Uh, Seth Apert. Uh, the report is that Seth Appert is now going to have more influence in the hockey department, hockey operations, and scouting. Okay. It just it’s another layer of this team is just minor league. It is just small potatoes. And okay, I’m not saying Seth Appert isn’t a good coach, but why did you feel the need to promote him at this time? Why is the idea to oh improve the hockey department upstairs to give the assistant coach more power when, excuse me if I’m wrong on this, the number one thing that happened with Seth Aert this past season was that the power play was one of the worst in hockey that he was in charge of. Like what am I missing here? the the guy one of the main responsibilities for this coach this year was can you fix the power play and then the answer at the end of the year was a definitive no and they gave him a promotion. I I just I don’t know. Again, these moves on their own are not actually that big a deal at all. But this is what you get when you’re on a 14-year playoff drought. And then even with this regime and this organization, this general manager, some of these players, when you’re going into year six of not making the playoffs, all of these little decisions that fans don’t like that I don’t like get exaggerated. I’ll admit it. I’m exaggerating how meaningful these little moves are. Eric Stall, Seth Appert, but doesn’t mean I don’t hate them. Doesn’t mean I don’t hate them. All right. Uh when we come back, Craig Rey on Bo and another element, another thing to look at that continues to build and build um towards me believing that Bo Byum’s played his last game for the Buffalo Sabres. Maybe another sign of that coming up next here on the Lockdown Sabres podcast. Today’s episode of the Lockdown Sabres podcast is presented by wonderful pistachios. I played a little golf today and what did I have in my bag? not pistachios because I got a new golf bag and I forgot to take the pistachios out of my old bag, the big bag, and put it in my new one. So, I was very let down when I got uh like around the sixth hole and I wanted a snack and I didn’t have those in there. But, you should you should for not just golf, of course, but for anything where you’re doing running around or you are got an activity, maybe you’re doing some hiking or something, long walks, get wonderful pistachios, snack that’s both delicious and nutritious. Crack into a good source of protein with wonderful pistachios. Each 1oz serving has six grams of protein, giving you 10% of your daily value. I like the no shells variety. It’s easy. Back here on the Lockdown Sabres podcast, the Sabres making some uh changes in the front office in addition at least today. Uh Eric Stall, special assistant to the general manager and the report is that Seth Appford has now more say more power in the front office. Okay. I also kind of want to guess that Lindy does too, but we haven’t seen much of that lately. Um, okay. The other thing to get to around the around the horn around the whistle after the whistle, excuse me, with Craig Rey and Andrew Peters yesterday, we talked a little bit about some of the things that they had to say about Adams and him staying on after a multi-day presentation, which I assume included that Eric Stall would start working for the team. Uh, Bo Byum. Craig says that he’s heard that Bo Byum’s house in Buffalo is empty. Empty. Packed all his stuff up and he’s gone. At least from his house. He does also doesn’t have a contract with the Buffalo Sabres, but he is a restricted free agent and he’s two years away from unrestricted free agency. But Byron packed his stuff up. Now, again, having a little fun with this. Uh what would compel a guy to pack everything up? You know, like if you’re going away for the off season, do you pack everything? Sure. I’m sure he goes home to Vancouver or around British Columbia somewhere there. Um so why do you need everything? Unless you don’t plan on coming back to said house. He could be buying a new house in Buffalo. It actually could even be the opposite. It could be, oh, he thinks he’s about to sign a seven-year deal and he’s going to buy a bigger house, so he took all his stuff out because by the next time he comes back to Buffalo, he’ll be in the new house. Uh, I don’t think that’s the case, though, because that would assume that he is signing a long-term extension with the Buffalo Sabres. And I do not believe that is currently the favorite at all to be what happens here with Bo Byum. So, all right, Byum’s house is empty. you know, this the the real estate scoops in sports, sometimes they can look like they’re not really serious points to be taken about what’s about to happen, but a lot of times they end up being indicative of what is coming. I mean, I remember Tom Brady put his house on the market in Foxboro or in New England, Boston, wherever he lived when he lived with the when he worked for the Patriots. Um, and I remember when he put his house on the market before he had free agency and everyone was like, “Oh, Brady’s going to leave. Brady’s going to leave.” And then you had, of course, the like, “Guys, it’s it’s real estate. You can’t take that to mean anything.” And sure enough, he left. He left. And there are a lot of other examples of that as well in sports where the guy puts his house for sale or in this case moves all his stuff out and you go, “Ah, it doesn’t mean anything.” And then it does actually sometimes mean something. It’s a new world covering sports in this way. So, because it’s not the only thing with Bo Byum, we have this long buildup of he him not sounding like somebody when he talks about it that wants to be here long term. Him being somebody that’s played for an elite organization in Colorado and that’s sure it’s a big culture shock here playing for this organization. um playing so far away from home for him and also Kevin Adams not really naming him as a part of the Sabres core. All of that that preceded this thing from Craig Rey about his house being empty. It’s just more and more evidence. You know, if you’re you’re a lawyer and you’re trying to get a conviction here on he’s leaving and you just got exhibit A, exhibit B, exhibit C, exhibit N, and just you add it all together at the end and you’re trying to build something where you don’t have a, you know, a reasonable doubt. So, I’m about at that point with Bo Byum. Like, I I never say never that he couldn’t sign an extension with the Sabres if they were to overpay him. Um, by the way, one other exhibit that I should mention here about Byum and him wanting to leave that might be the source of why he would want to might have anything to do with Buffalo or the Sabres. He might love the guys and think that they are going to turn things around, but still want to go because Freriedman said a couple months ago that Byron wants to be a number one defenseman and he wants power play time. He wants more minutes and that’s not going to happen for him here. I mean, it’s he’s not even going to be the number two guy here, and that does hurt his pockets. You know, he’s got a contract extension coming up, and I think he probably thinks, you know, if I were to guess, he’s going to get somewhere around 8 million bucks. Um, he just had a careerhigh with 38 points, and almost all of those were even strength. Um, of the 38 points, what is it? uh 35. We’re at even strength, by the way, ranked 15th in the National Hockey League for defenseman. But why doesn’t he have bigger points? Because he doesn’t play on the power play. Because the Sabres have two guys already for that. They have Dene and they have power. And if you’re Bo Byum or you’re Bo Byum’s agent, I’m sure you’re thinking, man, I got 38 points in Buffalo and all were even strength. If I go play for blank, whoever, Calgary, it doesn’t matter. I go play for them and I get number one power play minutes and I hold level on my even strength production and now I add 20 to 25 power play points. Well, now now I’m a 60 point defenseman. Now that went fourth overall. Now I have instead of an $8 million player, maybe now I’m a $9.5 million player. Um I think his value only grows if he stacks up the points. And I don’t think he’ll ever stack up the points because you can only get so many even strength points as a defenseman and he’s never going to play power play here. At least unless power gets like horrible at it. He’s never going to do it. So I think he’s gone. Um maybe he gets one more year but I think he’s probably gone. All right, last thing when we come back on the Amirs. We know their opponent coming up a little bit on that next on the Lockdown Savers podcast. An award-winning mattress can change your life. They will play the Laval Rocket in the North Division finals. The Rocket who are named after Maurice Rashard, which I think is very cool. Um, who finished number one in the AHL this season. Remember the Amirs were at number one for a while. Laval tops them and they end up finishing number one in the regular season. This is a very good group, a very strong team. you never find AHL odds, but if they were setting them, I would bet Laval would be a slight favorite over the Rochester Americans. Um, if you are wondering about their roster and some of their names and some of their bigger name prospects, they don’t really have a lot of elite prospects. Like some of their top guys are more so career AHL guys, tweener guys in the AHL and the NHL. Kaden Primo in goal has been one of the best goalies in the AHL all season long. It’s just a good well-rounded team. They’ve got their veterans. They got a couple of kids that help produce as well. So, maybe the Amir should be considered a slight underdog in this one, but hey, they just swept round one and they looked amazing doing it. And the way Devin Levi has played lately, I mean, I wouldn’t make them much of an underdog if if that would even be fair to say. Maybe some out there that watch more AHL than I do would say the Amirs are the favorite. Um, the last time these two teams played in the playoffs was the 2022 North Division finals and the Amirs got swept in that series. Obviously, a lot younger. Kik younger and a lot of those players, you know, that would not Well, Kik wasn’t even on the team yet, I don’t think. Um, different different Ammers team, different coach, different everything. So you get the Amirs Wednesday, a week from tonight against Laval in Rochester. These quirks of the AHL playoffs. Sometimes I like them. It’s just sometimes hard to track. Um the first two games will be in Rochester, which is interesting, isn’t it? The the Amirs get two. It’s a best of five and the Amirs will have two home games and Lavala have three if they play all five games. And they go game one and game two in Rochester. game three, four, and five all in Laval. So, there’s a chance the Ammers I mean, if they swept them, they would actually have home ice because you’d get two games in Rochester and one game in Laval. So, uh, next Wednesday is the first of those meetings and then next Friday, I think that’s the game I’m going to try to be at. Um, look, that’ll be Laval coming to Rochester on a Friday night and that’ll be awesome. Uh, by the way, if you’re wondering where is Laval, uh, it is basically Montreal. It’s more, I think, a neighborhood or even would it be considered a suburb of, uh, of Montreal. It’s just right across the river there. And, um, you’re there. So, they were actually even talking about playing their home games in the Bell Center. I don’t believe that is happening. The schedule listed as Bell Place. Um, but there was talk that they would host those games in the Bell Center. that I guess is not going to happen. Um, so you know, the road the road game will be a little bit further. What that does mean though is that Devin Levi is going to be playing basically against his, you know, as close to a hometown team as you get. Uh, Dellard de Ormo, if I am doing that right, and it’s very possible that I am not, is Deon Levi’s hometown. And that is same thing like on that Montreal peninsula it is the same thing like Levis’s again I don’t even know if you want to call it a suburb might be called a suburb it’s 47 it’s a 47 minute drive from Montreal and Laval is right there up north so this is basically a homecoming for Devin Levi uh against his hometown AHL team at the very least. So big series for him and I would pick the Amirs to win because I think it’ll be Levi. I I just I can’t I am not betting against Deon Levi right now. And the whole roster has come together and I know this is a very challenging opponent that they have on their hands, but I you’re gonna have a hard time not getting me to pick the Amirs right now. The way they look, I just I love every bit of their roster, every bit of their team. The way Koulik has played since he’s gone down there. Uh Helenius, Constahellius showing up and being a producer in the playoffs and being an energy guy while also scoring a couple of goals. the veterans Brett Murray and all Kale Kle has been awesome since he’s gone down there. I’m picking the Amirs. Uh I’ll probably pick him at five though. I’ll pick him at five. You know, Laval’s Laval’s a good team and I’m not being someone that doesn’t watch them almost ever because they’re number one in the AHL. I want to respect the record, respect the standings and respect what I read about them, which is that that’s a top team. So, uh I’ll pick the Emerson five. All right, that’ll do it for us today here on the Locked On Sabres podcast. Eric Stall today. Who will it be tomorrow? What [Music] about Chris Neil? Chris Neil tomorrow. Maybe we’ll start working for the team. I just hire the whole O06 Hurricanes. I still can’t believe Eric Stall’s back in Buffalo. Just don’t bring the ring. Don’t wear the ring around. Imagine dude wears the ring around. Get that ring out. Don’t that that Stanley Cup ring better not enter that building. Maybe Kevin Adams ring’s already entered the building. I’m not sure. All right, enough. I’m out of here. See you later. Uh, if you’re looking for some playoff talk, um, be sure to check out Locked on NHL game night. The Buffalo Sabres have hired Eric Staal as special assistant to the GM, setting Sneaky Joe off about now two 2006 Carolina Hurricanes working for the organization. What’s the point of hiring Staal? How offensive is this to Sabres fans? Also, why is Seth Appert getting an increased role in the Sabres front office? Is the team going to add Rick Dudley or another experienced GM to help Adams too?
Plus, Devon Levi and the Rochester Americans are set to face the Laval Rocket in the next round of the AHL playoffs.

Joey, you are a kid and your opinion isnt as important as you think. Eric Staal has clout. I have lived through worse heartbreak than 2006. Wanna hate a Hurricane? Try Rod B. He really tore our hearts in that series. Your anger is as close to mine for 1999. You got some more growing to do before you can be as mad as us OGs
Staal has a name, but I agree with you as far is him having player clout and that's about it. What in the hell is Adams thinking here?
Pure nepotism.
If Staal isnt supposed to actually be a meaningful hire, i understand that. But what i wouldnt understand is why giving Eric Staal a GM internship is on the list of priorities for a team that hasnt made the playoffs in a decade and a half. Baffling.
Stahl was hired because he can lure players that don't want to come to Buffalo
Rick Dudley would be an awesome hire.
Good lord, let it go. If this actually bothers you, get a hobby. I am a 30+ year fan, I don't care. Buffalo sports media just pours gas on the negativity and digs up things to be negative about.
Hahaha what it takes to win – like having the opposing team have 5 defensemen injured.
That’ll do it
I hate the 2006 Canes, but Staal is a player I've always liked. Shame we only had him for a Krueger season at the tail end of his career.
Correct me if I’m wrong… but wasn’t it staal that didn’t wanna be in Buffalo as a player??
The hate for the 06 Hurricanes here is a bit ridiculous. They were a great team that season. So were the Sabres, but we were injured. Getting Stanley Cup winners in this organization is a good thing. Give Staal a chance. Everyone has to start somewhere. Go Sabres!
I was Sabres fan from 1991-1998 then hockey dropped off cuz no1 in my school was into hockey it was all football/soccer. Became a fan again in 2016.. What happened with 2006 Hurricanes and Sabres?
Get over it for gods sake.
Joe would not care about the 06 Hurricanes so much if they had just been in the playoffs for half of the 14 year drought. Kinda forced to think about that era of playoffs when they haven't been in it for so long.
But also, I'm glad that instead of firing Kevyn Adams for being a moron of a GM, they keep him and let him hire his buddy and promote the worst PP coach I've ever seen. Next up, Sabretooth as President of Hockey Ops 🫡
Edit: okay Joe I think people hate staal because of how he acted when he was traded here and his comments after going to Montreal. Weren't you kind of hoping Brind'amour would come here to coach?
There needs to be more to come with someone with credible experience
The funny thing is that outside of Slava Kozlov in 01-02 and Taylor Hall, I'm not sure if there was another player who was clearly less interested in playing here. Seth Appert has more say because he's the next Head Coach, he was a solid 70 games under .500 as a college coach
Your feeling towards Staal is how I feel about your cheesy, disingenuous sounding ads. Let it. the. fuck. go. I could only listen to like 10 minutes. Had to shut it down.
Love how fired up Joe is
