MOCK DRAFT & LOTTERY PAIN (RED WINGS FALL AGAIN) – Winged Wheel Podcast – May 7th, 2025

The Detroit Red Wings are beyond cursed when it comes to the NHL Draft Lottery.Tune in as we start by recapping the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, as the New York Islanders and Utah Hockey Club (now Mammoth) win their draws, pushing the Detroit Red Wings down to 12th overall. Our thoughts, analysis on the odds, how the Red Wings have been screwed historically by the draft lottery process (despite landing Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Simon Edvinsson, & others), and more.

Next, our 2025 NHL Mock Draft of the first half of Round 1, including who we would pick if we were Steve Yzerman looking to bolster the Hockeytown lineup: forward support for Larkin, DeBrincat, Kane, Kasper, and Raymond? A defenseman to join Seider, Edvinsson, and Johansson? Full picks listed below.

Next, a Stanley Cup Playoffs update including an insane comeback in Winnipeg as the Jets and Hellebuyck survive Game 7 against the Blues, and the Leafs vs. Panthers series off to a hot start thanks to Bennett, Tkachuk, Stolarz, and more. Also, an update on David Carle staying in Denver.

All of that & lots more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment – enjoy!

  1. 10 spots is too many to be able to move up. You might say that my tune would change if the Red wings did it, and you're right. However, I also believe the Red wings have earned the right to move up that many spots with how many times they've been kicked in the dick by the draft lottery

  2. When do the boys honestly think the Red Wings make the playoffs? I guess 2 yrs. Keep up the hard work. We are going to get there… eventually.

  3. well, at least the Toledo Walleye games are fun to goto, and they win more…that's my only solace…..

  4. Got to watch the Griffins meltdown in person while watching the Wings get hosed in the draft lottery yet again. Great night for the Red Wings org.

  5. I just fast forward discussion about how draft lottery works till draft. Rashny vs Atchison its like last time MBN vs Hage

  6. I want them to draft Brady Martin but like I said last year (and I was wrong bc they took one of the more “ready” players available) just take the best available and hope they can use this prospect in a trade package to add an impact player during the the trade deadline. Whether it be this season or next

  7. The answer to the draft lottery question is to abolish the draft lottery altogether.

Half the league will always suck. Teams will tank regardless. Abolish it. It solves nothing and screws over the teams that need high draft stock, prolonging rebuilds.

The answer is accept tanking because there's no solution to eradicate it.

  8. Why is Ryan upset? He was the one who wanted to win out after elimination. Maybe if we finished in the bottom 10 we wouldve moved higher. Also signing useless FAs to end up mid doesnt help either. SJ is an example of a proper rebuild

  9. Abolish the Draft Lottery, it hurts the teams that need the help most, and helps teams that don't deserve it. LGRW 🐙 🏒 🤘

  10. Here is what I would do with the draft lottery.

    1. We go back to three draws.
    2. Reduce the number of spots a team can move up from 10 to 4
    3. The number of spots a team can move up increases by one if they fall in the draft order without winning a lottery draw
    4. The number of spots a team can move up resets to four if that team either makes the playoffs or wins a lottery draw

  11. I've been hit in the helmet so many times, cage dented, helmet cracked, broken helmet hardware…… never was close to a concussion, been hit similar the hit on stol…… that's the only time my head and neck have ever been hurt.

  12. NHL draft sucks!!! The wings after not making the playoffs for what ? the 9th year!!. and get bumped down again. keeping these kids in the farm league for 3 or more years needs to go by the way side. Put these guys in and let them play. only thing that can happen is they don't make the playoffs!! BIG DEAL WHAT ELESE IS NEW.

  13. First pick in the draft should go to the team in the bottom 10 who hasn't drafted first overall in the longest time. Then second and third go to the next longest streaks in the bottom 5 teams. The rest go in reverse order of final standings.

  14. I am so pissed year after year, Utah, frickin Utah, every year I think it can't get worse to get stabbed in the back but year after year the NHL finds away

  15. Need a swing for the fences draft pick…….RHC Roger McQueen (if he is still available)
Or a back up plan for Jack Nesbitt a larger LHC
Or to get the LW depth for Lynden Lakovic 6' 4" 190 lbs
Add insult to all of this Montreal has back to back picks at #16 and #16 where they could trade both for another top 7 pick.

  16. What are the actual Mathematical odds of NEVER moving up in 9 years of a lottery? I would guess slim to none

  17. I'm not surprised they fell, they have never moved up, only down, even when they only have a 5% chance of falling. Crazy how the Wings have been on a 10 year rebuild and haven't picked in the top 3 once.

The had no choice but to rebuild after 25 years in a row of playoffs and an empty prospect pool. The system doesn't discourage tanking at all. If they really wanted to discourage tanking they would take the bottom 10 or 15 teams in the league and give them all equal odds. I'm not saying they should do this but I would agree with changing it or eliminate it entirely because it's unfair and doesn't do what it intended to do. Blackhawks traded away Debrincat, Hagel, even Patrick Kane, they were awarded with 1# pick and Bedard.
