Wilson hit on Carrier – Tough Call Review

Tom Wilson annihalated William Carrier with a clean but forceful body check. I hope he’s ok.

  1. I think it was intended to be clean, but if you watch the shoulders close, they miss. He misses the shoulder on shoulder which shifts a huge amount of the contact to the head. Not intended dirty, just a slightly off timing huge check

  2. Wait just a minute! You always tell us you're looking for a hockey play. That the hitter's stick needs to show some pursuit of the puck. That the gaze has to be following the puck.

His stick is way off the ice. His gaze is completely focussed on Evans' head.

I don't know which of your rules to follow anymore.

  3. ''… a little head contact…'''

You should stop making hockey content and start a career in comedy, because that's a real good joke.

  4. In NHL hockey, Rule 42 defines charging. It's a penalty, potentially minor or major, given to a player who skates, jumps into, or charges an opponent violently, especially when using excessive distance and speed to deliver a hit. The severity of the penalty can be determined by the officials and may include a major penalty and game misconduct, or even a suspension if the charging results in an injury.

  5. Carrier needs to skate with head up. Pretty hard to execute shoulder to shoulder if the skater is leading with his head himself. Carrier is also a good 5” smaller than Tommy. Clean as day

  6. I remember I took a bad penalty once that costed us the game. I hit a guy a lot taller than me and due to my smaller height it ended up more of a hip check then a body check and the guy flipped over me. In the league hip checks were not allowed due to our age. I complained that i didn't intend to hip check him I hit him like i normally would hit anyone else and it's not my fault he is extra tall. My dad sat me down after the game and told me the game doesn't care what you intended to do your actions on the ice are the only thing that matters. If someone trips over my stick even though they skated into it, i still get the call because i am responsible for my stick. The same rules apply to this hit, It was not intended for the head it should have been clean but it didn't end up that way and he made contact with the head. End of story there is no intention in hockey.

  7. that hit from tom wilson was illegal it was a hit to the head while carrier did not have the puck and even if he had the puck it was unacceptable. we can clearly see it on the video. then there was a goal during the same play which should not have happened and it changed the game. the refs were awful and did not call the play at all. those who disagree with this can only be some washington fans who would say anything to protect their team and just deny the truth even with video proof. this is not the first time the referees dont do the right thing and dont give a penalty. many times nhl also did nothing and gave no suspension on some dirty hit. it was not only during this game of this series or involving montreal and washington. this has been happeneing everywhere in the league in every team at some point at different levels and the nhl dont seem to take it seriously and dont seem to work to make things better from what we see. it is very dissapointing for everyone because it looks bad for the sports and it make fans unhappy and its also a safety concern for the players. for those who would claim this , whatever heads up or down , hitting the head is not and should not be allowed. hitting a player which is in a bad position is intentionally trying to injure a player that is in a vulnerable position and it should be punished severely.

  8. That's not the rule. I usually side with you but this isnt correct. Rule 7.6 "There is no type of legal contact to the head, face, or neck. It is the players’ responsibility to avoid making contact with an opponent’s head, face, or neck, at all times. Head contact may take the form of direct contact to the head or accidental contact, where the principle point of contact is the shoulder or chest. Regardless of the circumstances, players must be penalized for contact with an opponent’s head, face, or neck at all times."

  9. That's a really dumb take. If you do it intentionally or not doesn't matter. Still head contact, still a penalty. This series has been nothing but cross checks to the face and the like. All without calls.

  10. A lot of people on here talking about this being an illegal hit and arguing that any contact to the head or neck is illegal clearly haven't read the rules. The rule for illegal head contact straight from the NHL rulebook is:

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an

opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and

such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted.

In determining whether contact with an opponent's head was

avoidable, the circumstances of the hit including the following shall be

    considered:

    (i) Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the

opponent’s body and the head was not "picked" as a result of poor

timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the

    body upward or outward.

(ii) Whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by

assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full

    body check unavoidable.

(iii) Whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body

or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way

that significantly contributed to the head contact.

Even though a lot of the hit goes to the head, Wilson's main point of contact is Carrier's shoulder. Carrier is responsible for having his head down and body angled to the ice and the rule clearly states that if the opponent has assumed a posture where head contact is unavoidable then it's a clean hit.

  11. what about how he leads with his elbow and extends his arms. Really seems excessive! Why is there not even a league review and explanation?

  12. Still more contact to the head than that hit on Sundqvist in the 2018 offseason. Still maintain that was a clean hit.

  13. "Beautiful, clean, bodycheck".. Guy jumped and direct point of contact is his head. Comment section and Narrator participating in doublethink.
