It’s literally a judo throw. The popularity of MMA has caused these takedowns to become popular, but it’s not really part of old time hockey and super dangerous on the ice due to rotational force of the head…. I like judo throws but not in a hockey fight.
That's beyond absurd. Chatfield is not a fighter and there's no way this was remotely intentional. McMichael challenged Chatfield after the Caps were headhunting all night. No suspension or fine.
Yes, that was really aggressive and uncalled for, but lets also look at the whole third period. Tempers running VERY high, I believe the benches were already down to 9 players? Why weren't the lines men 100% breaking up that fight before it even got to that point. I do think Chatfield should be suspended as I do think he intentionally rag dolled McMichael to try to gain leverage, and ended up pulling him over his leg/hip in a judo type maneuver, but not sure exactly how DoPS lays it all out … a slew foot maybe, but its not during regular play when the focus should be on puck possession, these guys are hanging on for life trying to punch each other in the head awkward take downs have happened in the past as well. Maybe just a fine? Callahan was only fined for crosschecking Harkins right in the neck a few nights ago. That could have easily broken Larkins jaw. I just don't know.
I'm of two minds on this. Or, maybe two thirds to one thirds mind on this. It's really dangerous considering how McMichael could have banged the back of his head on the ice. I've known of people who have died falling backwards like that. I think the League has to send a strong message and, I agree, I would suspend Chatfield for 10 games. *However*, it's my understanding that when the game got out of reach for the Caps, they started with Shenanigans. So, part of me thinks that after initiating a game of hardball, the Caps can't whine about a pitch high and inside. Reminds me of guys who are great at chirping, but get all bent out of shape when someone chirps *them*. Can't stand it when people who dish it out can't take it. I think the Refs have to get a bit more generous with 10 minute misconducts when the score gets out of hand and the losing team starts fucking around. It would put a stop to things escalating to where something dangerous happens.
Couldn't agree more. The combination of Helmetless + force + momentum on this is incredibly dangerous. If McMichael doesn't do everything in his power to keep his head bent forward while getting swung down, the back of his head hits the ice in an incredibly dangerous way. This could've ended extremely badly if that had happened. Not to mention he's gotta have a sore back after taking all that impact on that kind of move. This should 100% be looked at by the league.
I think both teams need to get a warning, they play again next week and things need to cool down. Everything started when Wilson tried to hit Aho and Aho dodged him. Wilson then challenged Aho to a fight in which he just went to the bench. Shortly after Wilson yells at the Canes bench saying that no one could protect Aho. Rod then didn't put Aho, Jarvis, or Slavin back out on the ice.. and then things went nuts. This was Chatfield's second fight in the NHL and probably had no real idea on what to do as fighting is not really something the Canes do and he's not normally one to do so if it does happen.
Interesting note is that Burns threw some punches out there.. Burns hasn't been in a fight since 2008! 17 years ago!
i don't think it was intentional. I bet if you put chatfield out there and asked him to execute this throw again he'd have no idea how to do it. HOWEVER, the analogy I always use is driving a car: you are responsible for what the car does, period. yes, the other player has a responsibility to not put themselves in dangerous situations, but the actor in question has a responsibility to treat their opponent with respect and care.
this is not a war zone where you live or die. you're a bunch of millionaires playing a kids game – oh wait, that's why they all act like spoiled brats. nevermind.
That was horrible. This isn't MMA ffs – we should place a flag here. Because if this becomes normalized? NHL may have to step in. 10 games is appropriate.
He avoided suspension for this, but these teams play again next week and he's gonna have to deal with Tom Wilson that whole game and honestly that's better than a suspension if you ask me.
I would suspend for 25 games. Regular fight are part of the hockey game. Faire enough. This has nothing to do with throwing some jab. League need to do something.it’s too easy to waive at the injuries when they come but doing nothi g before. This could have killed him. And what would have happened ? A bertuzzi joke ?
The context is important … capitals down 4, 5 mins left … the game is basically over, both teams know there making the playoffs
The capitals made it into a goon show, at that point do the hurricanes really have to keep the same level of honor and respect … the caps clearly weren’t.
Not saying no suspension, but the context makes it less egregious
Bro is analyzing a fight frame by frame in a true to reality 10 second clip where a guy was hunted down and sucker punched by the idiot instigating the fight as if he's a professional mma fighter lmfao. Chatfield has like 3 career fights, get the fuck over it

Yeah, that's really dangerous.
Looks like a judo throw. Incredibly dangerous. There's a reason judo isn't practiced on concrete (or ice).

Karate kick / judo throw . Welcome to diversity style hockey .
I saw Tom Wilson practicing the piledriver.

Do up your stupid chinstraps!! Helmet should not come off that easy

The NHL seems to disagree with us. They thought it was a great hockey move. No suspension.

20 game suspension warranted. Intent to injure.
Ya that’s cheap as F.
