I think the argument that Evans played the puck is stronger than the argument that Ovechkin couldn't really do much else. If it's interference, it doesn't matter, the intent isn't a factor. Just like with a trip or high stick, even if it's accidental, it's still a penalty.
I think the habs player would be dead if he leaned into it and the call was just to keep things from getting out of control probably- I’m sure when you see that happen to your teammate you think the worst intentions wise. I know I initially thought it was intentional from my angle.

This hit should have been intent to injure with a hit to the head. This should have been at least a 5 minute major and a 10 minute misconduct. I'm so tired of hearing about Player Safety and then the refs don't actually enforce the actual rules the way they were intended. What actually should have happened was a 5 minute major, a game misconduct, and the player safety board should have given Ovechkin a 2 game misconduct. I know everyone thinks that the "Great" players shouldn't be given suspensions but that's simple BS!
I dont know why Ovi was penalized. the hit is brutal, old school, but clean. its playoffs, you dont skate on open ice with head down. ask karaya or lindros. but kids never learn.

Try looking at the replay from a different angle….I did. From the front angle it is very clear that the hit by Ovi on Evans was indeed intentional. There was no attempt to avoid the hit.
Disagree with the call, have your own analysis, fine. It was a borderline hit. But “I don’t know what else he’s supposed to do,” as though it wasn’t intentional, is too much. It was not accidental contact, it was easily avoidable. He isn’t pulling back or softening the blow, he’s setting himself for the hit. The only argument is that Evans recently touched the puck, and it’s a bit sketchy because he fired it away right after stripping it. I think the refs (for once) got the call right.
He doesn't "soften the blow" by moving his body as he did he focused more contact to the upper body and the head causing a worse hit. You can also see that he changes his direction more towards the center of the ice to make contact after the puck is long gone. Its head contact therefore a penalty.

And as Buttman hates Montreal and anything Canadian in general (no Canadian team won the Stanley Cup since he took over and he made sure of that and he would rather give a team in fokking in I forgot the redneck city in a basketball arena with OBSTRUCTED view seats than in Quebec City that had the most modern arena in NHL!) anyway fok the NHL and its plots to make them win the teams they wanna win even though they only have half spectators during the seaons of a team in a stupid desert that nobody wants! That’s the stubborn nhl for you. Ovetshit is a fokking bum and he knows he can get away with it
