The ‘Bruins Way’ Is Holding Them Back (And How Mitch Marner Could Fix It)

The ‘Bruins Way’ Is Holding Them Back (And How Mitch Marner Could Fix It)

The Locked On Boston Bruins podcast dives into a major identity crossroads for the Black and Gold. Host Ian McLaren argues it’s time for the Bruins to move beyond their traditional defensive-first mindset and embrace a more offensive, modern NHL approach.

With recent playoff failures exposing the limits of “The Bruins Way,” McLaren breaks down:

Why Boston must prioritize offense in the draft, free agency, and player development

How elite playmakers like Mitch Marner, a potential free agent, could transform the team’s identity

The balance between offensive creativity and defensive responsibility in today’s NHL

Could Mitch Marner be the missing piece in Boston’s offensive evolution? And is the old-school mindset holding this team back from another Stanley Cup run?

  1. Ian, Lohrei is a rookie. His forte is offense, and he is still learning how to play defense, and you know all new defensemen take 2-3 years to learn that position. It is really ridiculous to constantly talk about how he's not a 2-way defenseman like he was touted to be some kind of Drew Doughty. You know who WAS touted to be the next Doughty? McAvoy, and he was still tutored his first year or two by Chara, and had forward players like Bergeron and Krejci cleaning up rookie defenseman mistakes.

It's a big turnoff for me to hear the fanbase get on the case of the only player on the Bruins this entire season with any offensive instincts, especially a rookie on a shitty team and especially on a team that forced him to play WAY above his level and with little on-ice guidance and practically no secondary help via the shitty $8.25M AAV goalie or other teammates on the ice.

  2. Ian, What I saw out of the young guys is much more preferable to me to spending big on a guy that is going to cost Pasta money. why not two or three guys that make 6-7 instead of the one super large contract?, and have Minten, Khust, Lysell, mittlestadt and the other young guys fill out the roster and allow them to develop. I thought the young kids brought energy we hadnt seen all season. I know Sweeney is in what I would call win now, or at least make the playoffs now, mode but I think spending big on free agents is not the way to go. Love the show by the way…

  3. No way they will over pay and eat up too much cap space and if they ever bring hitting back into the game he is a non factor ,too many holes need to be filled to waste on one player did we not learn anything from the Elias Lindholm signing?
