‘An unacceptable play. That merits a suspension’: Button on Chatfield’s dangerous maneuver

How important is it for the Maple Leafs to avoid the Panthers and Lightning in the first round of the playoffs? What should John Tavares’ next contract look like? When do you predict Alex Ovechkin will break Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goals record? What did you think of the dangerous maneuver Jalen Chatfield used when fighting Connor McMichael? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

  1. Dude slashes repeatedly and wants to start fight only to get thrown like a ragdoll. Let the crying commence. Canes have the least fighting penalties in the league. Caps we're getting shit on and tried starting shit rest of the game. Wilson trying to fight someone half his size is some coward shit

  2. MMA guy here who moonlights as a hockey fan. For what it's worth, that was the safest Osoto Gari I've ever seen. Sure the caps player's helmet was off but his chin tucked to his chest so there was plenty of space between his head and the ice upon impact and the angle was very shallow so the force driving that impact was 95% gravity and 5% from the player.

  3. Hard to say a guy cant toss someone to the ground in a fight when they are punching each other in the face

  4. If it was dirty play to manhandle McMichael like that, the Caps had already pushed the game beyond honorable or respectful fighting. Wilson going after Stankoven who is half his size, Duhaime repeatedly punching Jost in the head while he was on his knees, Dowd’s (I think) intentional high stick to Gostisbehere. Again, Wilson, being a whiny bitch about an accidental slash from Aho after trying to lay him out. Classic fuck around and find out stuff. Dude got thrown to the ice, boohoo 😭

  5. Ive noticed this take down..whipping people to the ice more this yr it needs to stop .nhl get a handle on it now before someone gets killed.

  6. Dirtiest play I’ve seen in a years. That was a couple inches away from a stretcher with a neck brace and the NHL having another Bertuzzi incident on their hands.

  7. But if Chatfield slams his shoulder into his chest while flying down the ice, GREAT HIT!! Lighten up, wrestling calls it a hip toss.😂

  8. Canadians are cute. They think because of their goofy accent and living on the wrong side of the border that they're experts on hockey. Since Craig Button can figure it out here's what happened: McMichael gooned it up — and Chatfield gave him a taste of his own medicine. Don't want to get McRagdolled? Don't be a McIdiot by slashing a guy repeatedly then dropping the gloves and basically attack him from behind. Now run along….

  9. Caps wanna play goon hockey and feed Ovi all night. They got the shit kicked out of them and went on a hunting expedition trying to hurt Canes players. No sympathy at all.

  10. I like the analysis on the Chatfield incident, but isn’t it odd to start a fight against a non-fighter and then complain that the non-fighter tossed you down to the ice?

  11. This should be an 82 game suspension or lifetime ban. A move like that has no intention other than to hurt and given the impact of the head on the ice could have killed mcmicheal he should be criminally charged for assault and barred from play.

  12. I love how they about the leafs having any hope in the first, the leafs could play the sharks in the first and still only have at best a 50% chance of getting out of round one

  13. I say kick Chatfield out of the NHL, that could have killed McMichael! Imagine this scenario: instead of McMichael skating away relatively unscathed, he hits his head hard on the ice, fracturing his skull. He lays there, twitching on the ice, as everyone watching gasps in shock. He is stretchered off the ice, never to play or function normally again or perhaps even dying shortly after as a result. This literally could have happened if his head had been a few more inches closer to the ice when he got slammed. you tell me now that kicking him out of the league isn't worth it to send a message to the league not to do this again. Players' lives mean more than just a game, and this play could have killed someone. There needs to be more than just a meaningless 5 game suspension.
