The one player who could break Ovechkin’s goals record…

Now that Alexander Ovechkin has broken Wayne Gretzky’s All-Time NHL goals record, it’s time for us to start speculating who could be the one to dethrone Ovechkin. And currently, in the NHL, there is only one player that is on pace to do so…and his name is Auston Matthews.

  1. 1238 I highly doubt Matthews will break whatever number Ovechkin eventually retires with. He's just not as durable as Ovi and his pace will probably slow down considerably as he enters his mid-thirties. Also, who knows how many more Gretzky would've had if he hadn't retired when he did. Regardless, Ovi now only needs another 1238 assists to catch Gretzky in that department. So whether or not Matthews can catch Ovechkin, neither will ever come close to the Great One's total points.

  2. 15 games he has missed this season…..TO A FUCKING BROKEN LEG. Not some tendonitis or something simple. BUT TO A BROKEN LEG REPAIRED WITH METAL RODS….gtfo Austin stands no chance.

  3. As a capitals fan and obviously an Ovechkin fan, I would be OK if Matthews broke it? I like him, but I was gonna say it if you didn’t say it? His durability?! I mean he’s literally missed almost a full season when you add all his games missed so far that’s huge! Now the rest of his career, could he stay healthy? Well absolutely but he could wind up being a player that a decade from now. Everybody says… What if he would’ve stayed healthy but again, even as a capitals fan, I wouldn’t have a problem if he broke the GR8’s record! I think it’s good for hockey! I have friends and acquaintances who don’t pay any mind to hockey, but they did when it came to this? And that’s how you get more people to like a sport! Aka Hockey! ❤❤

  4. Matthews is more than 50 goals behind where ovechkin was with this number of games and he'a already been hurt a lot more than ovechkin was. Matthews isnt touching ovechkins record

  5. No, he will raise the average and break Gretzky goals in a season 92 10 times while winning the next 5 Stanley cups all with the leafs go leafs go go leafs go go leafs go

  6. Awesome video… really makes you think. And agree. That sprawling goal #32 was the best goal I have seen scored. Right up there with Bobby Orr's 'flying goal' against the Blues way back when.

  7. Matthews is way too injury prone… only REAL CHANCE for a player to break Ovi’s record is Draisaitl … German engineering built to last

  8. Do I hope he beats it. Yes. But it’s to big of a “What if” and I already do that in my head for Crosby. Guesstimating how many points Sid may have if we didn’t lose him for all those games and seasons with concussions and etc. there’s a good chance Sid could of broken crazy records too lol and maybe still could but he would have to play til Chelios age lol.

  9. True true true, that goal you mentioned will always be THAT Ovi goal to me too 😀 I think it is for many.
Let Ovi enjoy his record, though I hope Matthews will break it in a few years down the road. We did have a long enough drought of 30 years xD

  10. I said it before: The Goal was a ritual of dark magic, with past, present and future goals leaders being part of it.

  11. No he wont. Not durable enough, unlikely to play that long and even more unlikely to keep that pace.

  12. Classless move on the Leaves part to take the C off Tavares and give it to Cactus.

    Capn Underpants.

    Real leaders defer glory.

  13. if 2 players break the record in relatively same era it will really call into question the relevance of all of the reflexive statements about how it was so much easier to score goals back in the day…

  14. Statistically Matthews should get the record. In reality though, he is already slow compared to most players, as he ages that will only get worse.

Nowadays you see Ovechkin sitting "in his office" and being fed the puck, whereas you used to see him carry the puck. Matthews is almost already that stage.

Before I get flagged as a Matthews hater, I've been saying he could beat the record Ovechkin sets before he even set it. In the same number of games it was just 7 goals difference, but right now it's roughly a 0.30% scoring difference which shows Ovi slowed down, and so should Matthews.

  15. Oh God Please!!! Do it !!! Ovechkin sets up in same place every single time!! Great that it works for him, but Gretzky was dangerous from every angle.
