RED WINGS SHAKE-UP & ROSTER NEEDS ft. Max Bultman – Winged Wheel Podcast – Apr. 27th, 2025

The Detroit Red Wings offseason changes have already begun, with more potentially on the way.

Tune in as we’re joined by Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit (and Winged Wheel Podcast contributor) on this episode, opening by discussing the report that Todd McLellan, Steve Yzerman, and the Red Wings have moved on from goaltending coach Alex Westlund, and how this relates to Hockeytown’s issues in net over the years: can new coaching help, or is the rotating group of Cam Talbot, Petr Mrazek, Alex Lyon, and others to blame? How does this affect Sebastian Cossa coming up (with Trey Augustine a ways away)?

Next, Max offers his thoughts on Steve Yzerman’s biggest holes and offseason tasks to help the Red Wings roster: what support does Detroit need for Dylan Larkin, Patrick Kane, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, and Marco Kasper at forward? Do they need to prioritize a defenseman to help Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson? Can Nate Danielson, Carter Mazur, Axel Sandin Pellikka, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, or others be the answer?

After that, a comprehensive NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs update, including Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson in a lively bench brawl between Washington and Montreal, the Leafs dominating Tkachuk’s Senators, the Lightning and Panthers trading majors (and Cooper and Maurice exchanging banter) in the Battle of Florida, Connor Hellebuyck collapsing for the Winnipeg Jets, TNT not calling games in person, and plenty more.

We then get into our 2025 NHL Draft Prospect Profile on Cameron Reid: can the Kitchener Rangers defenseman be of interest for the Red Wings, or is someone like Aitcheson or Smith more attractive for Steve Yzerman and Detroit, who will want more size?

All of that and plenty more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment – enjoy!

  1. Petry is criminally underappreciated. He is solid as shit for his age and has a deadly blue line missile. He’s contributed more than Holl and he was injured for a huge chunk

  2. whenever i feel too good about my life I come here for a reminder of how bad my fav hockey team is. Helps to bring me down a peg.

  3. LHD is a need…..yet they have to keep seeking higher end wingers with scoring, grit, and future size, 3 will be in this draft area.
    LW Lynden Lakovic
    LW Malcolm Spence
    RW Justin Carbonneau
Plenty of 6' 0" centers in this draft area too if they are seeking a future replacement for Larkin.
If LHD Jackson Smith is available all focus may go on his ability to finalize the D pairings.

  4. I complain about some contracts we have. However….

I thank god every day we’re not stuck with Darnell Nurse and his contract which is undoubtedly the worst in the NHL. Dudes pay and play will be the biggest reason Edmonton will never win.

  5. This is such an unattractive situation I don't see anyone signing with Detroit, in fact I see them having no choice but to run it back with a couple new broken down guys and I just don't see the fanbase tolerating them tanking so they'll finish the year 5th or worse in the division and 10th or worse in the East and have no shot at a lottery pick. I think they've already missed their compete window.

  6. For the draft I would imagine Seattle and Pittsburgh take a defenseman. Both teams have little prospect depth in that position. Maybe you get a solid forward who falls at 12 if this happens

  7. Not a fan of offer sheets, however, poaching Bouchard from Edm makes a bit of sense. Edm will have trouble matching considering McDavid's upcoming contract. So your pairs would be Simon and Mo, ASP and Chiarot, Bouchard and Albert. Sign Petry to league min as #7. Thoughts?

  8. You guys are not addressing the real issue here. Depth and toughness. The Wings cannot grind physically like these first round teams. Did you guys play? Teams who lead in hits typically win the cup.

  9. I think Evan just recorded like a 5 min loop this episode and went to do something else. Good strat.

  10. Jets fan here…Hellebuyck's issues tend to be positioning (too deep in the net works fine reg season but playoffs with traffic he can't see pucks), also Pionk was a mistake of a contract, he is utterly dependent on Dylan Samberg beside him, without Samberg he is absolutely brutal, silver lining is that Stevie Y couldnt give Pionk that contract instead hah.
