The Aves Coach and the Aves players need to take their opinion to the NHLPA and see how far it goes. Man this has gotten so blown out of context.
The applicable rule is 8.1, which states: "When a player is injured so that he cannot continue to play or go to his bench, the play shall not be stopped until the injured player’s team has secured control of the puck. If the player’s team is in control of the puck at the time of injury, play shall be stopped immediately unless his team is in a scoring position."
The Wedgewood situation is a pretty obvious error in refereeing. If the actual rules are clear for skaters but not goaltenders, then obviously they need to clarify that rule. Clearly you can’t have a goaltender disabled in their net, unable to defend himself nor even move out of the way. Thats far worse than a skater down in a shooting lane, the goaltender is down in the actual target of any shooting lane. My guess is the NHL will clarify with the refs but wont announce anything, they will just do it internally.
