Laurence Gilman: There is no way the Canucks are getting Jack Hughes.

Former Canucks exec Laurence Gilman stops by to give his managerial perspective on what he heard yesterday. Laurence talks about the pros and cons of the honesty we heard, the prospect of salvaging the EP40 relationship, and whether a Hughes trade in either direction is actually possible.

  1. I laughed so hard when Laurence said he has a better chance of being the new pope than the Canucks getting Jack hughes.

  2. Sell EP40 already… Canucks dont need the next Alexander Semin .. Convince Hughes to resign not Ep40 how to work hard.

  3. The Canucks need to tear it down NOW!!. They should trade Hughes this summer to New Jersey for three first-round picks and a second. They need to trade everyone — and I mean everyone — for as many picks as possible, ideally first- and second-rounders. That includes trading Pettersson for a first- and second-round pick. They should be willing to absorb salary in deals, since the players they’ll have left won’t be on big contracts anyway. Take on bad contracts just to reach the salary floor. Be terrible for the next 3 to 5 years. If they make the right moves, they could potentially have 10 first-round picks over the next three years.

  4. If Jersey is smart, keefe is gone , they hire tocchet and get Quinn in the process. If Van is smart they see this coming and trade accordingly

  5. Jim's comments about bringing the Hughes from NJ to Van was supposed to be a joke. I thought it's already obvious that Vancouver doesn't have the assets to trade for Jack Hughes unless they want to give up Quinn Hughes in return…Lol

  6. Canucks have really shot themselves in the foot I think they have grossly mismanaged a lot of things especially the Miller situation..

  7. If it wasn’t for Quinn there wouldn’t be any reason to want Jack… He’s small skilled like Quinn, but not as valuable to his team as Quinn is. NJ hasn’t went very far with him so far and he hasn’t won any Individual accolades, so I’m not seeing the excess of value everyone is assessing. I’d rather have many other superstar centers over him— if Pettersson wasn’t so off his game last season I’d have taken him over Jack all day every day. If EP40 gets back on his game I don’t see any other teams over paying for Jack.

  8. Losing Quinn Hughes for nothing will lead to further problems for the Canucks franchise, things in the economy are not peachy right now and fans are not going to want to dish out money for season tickets to watch a sub .500 hockey team with no notable star players. It would not be a stretch to say that if ownership starts losing money, they would look to put the team up for sale and if a U.S. based billionaire comes calling, would they want to keep them in Vancouver or move them to say Houston or Kansas City?

  9. Unless he can pull a Brian Burke's deal, otherwise I won't see there's any possibility to pull 2 top prospects/players into another team.

  10. Rutherford was not suggesting the Hughes bros might need to be acquired by Vancouver. He was merely stating that Quinn probably wants to play with his bros. I think all bros would like to do so at some point. I took it as a caution that Quinn might want to go there to join them, particularly if the Canucks can't build a winner.
