Good take and good episode….I thought the signing in off season wasn't great….thought not trading him at deadline even for 4th or 5th round pick was a waste…..But the last 5-10 games I watched I enjoyed watching him….
Not sure I would want to give him multiple years….he performed well vs the other free agent defensemen at his price point…..but I'd rather give the money and roster spot to a Nic Hague….I would even buy lower with a player like Nick Perbix….low event player, steady as a third pairing guy, can play up on the 2nd pair…even played with Hedman a little…not sure he moves the puck as well as Sullivan would want…but much fewer giveaways than Gryz….not the same offensive upside but cheaper and low defensive liability compared…but there aren't a lot of options at Gryz's price point ,there weren't a lot of guys better that are free agents…..I think Gryz, Letang and Karlsson the three together making up half the d-men really needs the other three to be responsible defensively….they aren't right now. IMO
Good morning DK, boy oh boy, this is a good one to consider, eh!? I would have to say it depends on where Dubas & co have their eyes set on. By that I mean, if Dubas already has his eyes set on 2 L Dmen then the 4 mill that Grz would like goes to one of them, in that case no let him walk. If Dubas has his eyes on a specific L Dman but that's it, then I'd say try for a 3 year not 4 with Grz? Dubas is calculating so I wouldn't put it passed him that he has that answer already. Matt Grzelcyk suprised me. He got off to a very rocky start, but I thought as the season went on, he played pretty well. What really impressed me, was how well he played quarterbacking the top powerplay unit. It almost reminded of when the Penguins would use Paul Martin on the top unit when he played here. He was just a calming presence the way he distributed the puck, and results showed as they had the 6th best powerplay this past season.
He is probably going to draw some interest from other teams, because he did set a career high in points and as I said before, I thought his play improved as the year went on.
Thank you, DK! It's definitely frustrating….But i think, especially being a long time fan who's watched Goalies from Johan Hedberg, to the post season excellence of Matt Murray, that there's a certain swagger to the position. Murashov has it, and is also an incredible athlete. Blomqvist just flat out looks scared on the ice, and being timid is a horrible quality to have as a goalie. Joel is also 23…Fleury had his timid stage at 19, but was a superior athlete that just jumped out at you when he was on the ice. I think we need a gamer in net. Someone with Ned's swagger, and Flower's athleticism. I think Sergei Murashov is gonna be the guy,. I atleast believe he deserves a long shot next season with our big club. Gryz can come back, if it's a reasonable rate, no more than three years, and Sully commits to not playing him with Karlsson or Letang. Timmins or St Ivany, no one else please.
There is also the question….does Matt G even WANT to come back? He had a career year and I'm sure Dubas has a price range that Matt may have played his way out of. $2.75M and Matt G is the 17th highest scorer of ALL UFA's (40pts) and the highest scoring D man available. 2nd & 3rd at 33pts is Ivan Provorov @ $6.75M and Aaron Ekblad @ $7.5M. I imagine he gets $5M x 3-4 years from someone.
I would not make a long term commitment on Grzelcyk. He has shown improvement, but is it enough as of now ? I'd want to see more. Lets see what Dubas decides. Four years is a long time. Thank you DK
I didn’t realize Matt was as old as he is lol. Trying to get younger and signing a a defenseman who is already 31 or 32 years old probably isn’t the greatest idea.
