shake some bunsssss
your a good man, have fun at the game, hope we tie it up
I am glad Hiller made such a stupid call. Also loved how Hyman laid out Doughty that saw the puck in the MT net
Coach do not play Evan Bouchard he cough up the puck
Wow Edmonton wins 1 game and you think they are good lol Edmonton will be golfing in a week
W
Enjoy the game tomorrow night 🎉
Letttssssss go picks. Made some big saves when it counted. Did what was needed to win. I got way more faith in Pickard.
Unpopular opinion but do you really believe Connor Brown will score a hat trick anytime soon? He doesn't have one so far in his career and it's hard to imagine he'll get one. He still is a great player and has scored 2 goals on multiple occasions recently. Besides, who knows if he re-signs with Edmonton this Summer? I say just buy his jersey
This game gave me hope the Oilers can still win the series. We'll see if they have a chance after tomorrow night.
I'm working medical standby for the game tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm on upper or lower concourse yet, but I'll be sure to say hi if I see you 🙂
Pickard should be more relaxed for the next game. They need a quick start and don't let up in the slightest. I'm wondering if LA will start Rittich…
The Oilers didn't win that game because they played the best, the won because the Kings played the worst. They will regroup and take tomorrow's game.
1. Mark Stewart runs the PK.
2. Oilers PK is arguably losing them this series.
3. Oilers PK was light years better in game 3 despite the 2 goals against which all that matter really.
I encourage you to go take a look at the game 3 PK's again holistically. I think they were a bit unlucky to give up 2. Definitely room for improvement. Can't keep bleeding goals against.
So I promised you more on Calvin Pickard on the next video, so here it is.
From the start of this series I thought Pickard should have had the start. His metrics for the last run of games and overall season was better than Skinner's and they really should have just rode the hot hand. However, I am not convinced it would have changed a ton in the first two games. So much of that had to do with the team needing some time to play together, and they get their first chance in 2 games vs. LA Kings playing great to open the playoffs. Game 1 MIGHT have gone our way with Pickard in net, but not game 2.
Stuart Skinner, as you have said before, is a systems based goaltender. He leverages his size to remove openings for shots at range and even up close, as long as he is set and can see the puck. In a system whose philosophy is controlling zone entry and limiting shots from high danger areas, he would thrive. In the event of a trade, say Skinner goes to Florida as an example, I think his numbers would improve significantly. He does not do well with breaks off the rush, 1v1 situations, or lateral movement. He still has a few years to polish up his game. Within the Oilers system, Skinner can be a liability, particularly when their defensive core is struggling to find their game, especially without any true shut down defenders on the ice like Ekholm.
Pickard is a low technique, high athleticism goaltender, who battles for pucks and uses his quick reaction time to make up for what he lacks in technique. He also has very good hockey sense, which allows him to anticipate and get ahead of plays better than Skinner tends to do. He's not (currently) elite enough to be a shut down goaltender or one that is likely going to steal games. But he is adept at bailing his team out in clutch situations and making spectacular saves. This has the effect of raising morale and improving the Oilers mental game. They can play looser since in their minds Pickard can save that rush chance, where I feel Skinner just doesn't inspire that confidence the same way from the team. Last game, I felt your analysis of Pickard's game was a bit harsher than I would have given, as he didn't just make a big save on Kopitar in the last minute where it's likely going to be a win anyways, he had several clutch saves in the first period and one or two in the second as well. It seems silly, but those big dramatic saves are what inspires players and fans alike, even if the stats and metrics don't tell the most flattering story.
Your point about Kuemper is sound, he has been beatable in this series. With that said, he's come up with some amazing saves and has been hard to beat, regardless of the number of goals he's let in. This is a testament to the sheer offensive firepower the Oilers can generate. LA, outside of their first line, really don't have much for offense, if they can leverage this and shut down a decent percentage of the high-danger scoring chances, I feel Pickard can outduel Kuemper in the remainder of the series. The story of this match so far is the PK, so if we can get those clutch desperate saves on the PK going forward, I think things will look much better for the Oilers overall.
I really liked Draisaitl's comment last night. Paraphrasing, he basically said give the right chances and space to good shooters in this league and they can light up any goaltender, Vezina caliber or not. Sometimes you just get beat, sometimes you get beat lots. Sometimes though, you get enough to keep it out and swing moment for your team, and I am hoping we'll see a few more of those going forward in this series.
No love for Klingberg in this video I see! Lol.
I actually think they werent in playoff mode yet. The finished the season in SJ, stayed there then went into playoffs. No hype, no interviews, no home crowd, just practice then into the playoffs. As soon as they got home playoff mode was activated!
What can the Oilers do with their #1 shut down d man out….
Kane pots one and an assist. Brownie gets 2. RNH starts it off. Nice to finally get some depth scoring. I could watch that Hyman hit on Doughty over and over. Only thing missing is Jeff Skinner. Get him out there.
And stick with Picks.
crazy talk
but because the D needs help
should the oilers play 1-3-1
???
Great vid. But the PK was actually looking great in game 3 aside from the Kings' 2 late chances that both ended as unlucky goals (last minute sticks in front of shots something Don Cherry will tell you is a bad idea all day)
They got back to what made their PK elite – which is aggressiveness on the puck and not allowing the Kings anytime to setup or make plays.
Have no problems if they use this same personnell + PK strat in game 4, just refrain from deflecting pucks when Picard has a clean lane of a shot.
Frederic can't hit the back of a barn – how on Earth is he a better choice in the lineup than Jeff Skinner who actually has goal scoring prowess ? Still dumbfounded that JSkinner sits out. I would hate to play for Knoblocks due to his dice rolling blender roster management but also recognize as you pointed out he did finally establish some consistency last game rolling lines to allow the guys to build momentum (Perry would have easily scored that goal in place of Kane – Kane is still slow and penalty prone, Perry looks better out there with McD and Drai and that line got more points in game 1 to prove it)
The problem is see for the next game. Then kings can make adjustments. The oilers can not. Unless they can get an actual goalie.
We still don't have ekholm because of stupidity. It will take another miracle to win this series. Only so many miracles can come to one team. As Glen Sather said, "you can only go to the well so many times". Playing from behind in the playoffs well catch up to them.
I kind of want this to go to Game 7 so LA can raise more money for those affected by the LA fires. But still want Edmonton to win
Game 1 was way more 'bonkers'.
Need the goalies to step it up all series. Not just one game. Let’s go oilers we got this.
I feel bad for cutting our goalies down, all goalies have it hard.Pickard held the fort at the end of the game, got us a win. The emotions had me up and down and jumping all over. Thank you Oilers for the victory
Great vid but I’m not sure why you’re so hard on Pickard, other than the crappy one handed stick goal he didn’t really have a chance at the others… maybe he could have had one more the others no chance
Love u Austin, bring some luck to Roger Place tomorrow night, safe drive.
Luv this podcast. Have great time at game! Go Oilers!
When Oilers were doing well in this game, they were playing very different than they're used to the past few years – they were the tougher team, the better forechecking team, and the simpler team relying on set plays rather than ball hockey. It reaffirmed my belief that the Oilers strength is versatility and adaptability. IF they make it to the next round, it will probably be a similar story of having difficult games feeling out the other team and it will require a brand new look from the Oilers to win, just like many of these series we've watched since 2022. I think the Oilers ability to adjust is what always makes the analytics baffling and difficult to predict
Can we get a chair live stream?
If Knoblauch is winning the mind games by playing lines that have played together before then he’s mostly winning the mind games against himself. It’s funny that we call it a huge coaching win when the first two games were probably partially lost because of the lion combinations he concocted.
Walman had an excellent game one, dude
When you get mad and really mad you Crack me the he'll up,you make funny facial expressions 😅😅 👍
I wish the Oilers had a goalie like Blackwood ))😇😇😇
Good for you man. I hope they win for you. Ya they should stick with pic. He's been solid and looks like he's very comfortable. I hope they release Skinner this summer and get a true #1 tender. I can imagine Mcdavid has something to say about that it being his signing year.
Do you think Jake Walman is playing through an injury?
Kings fan here. Love your commentary! I hope you have a great time at the game today and let’s watch another exciting game irregardless of who wins.
I have been loving play off hockey this year , I have been watching all the games that I can and omg Habs are making a come back, the Wild are giving Vegas more trouble then they thought, The Avs just shut out the Stars, The Leafs fumbled there sweep, The jets are looking to break the Presidents Trophy Curse, All of Florida is having a panic attack whoever wins that will be too battered to win round 2 IMO, And the oilers are in the middle of preforming open heart surgery on themselves to fix whatever they can to come out on top. Its a crazy playoffs and YES I am very entertained. Enjoy your playoff tickets its gonna be Insane in the membrane YO!!! (You better have lots of pictures to show us)
It was LA’s game to lose and we lost it, as soon as I saw hiller call the time out I knew the challenge was coming. I was hoping we didn’t challenge and the first overtime game of the series.
Playoff time – best hockey time! LFG OILERS!
Hello Austin, Kings fan here, and a new subscriber. After game two, you somehow popped up on my YouTube feed. I absolutely love your passion. Keep up the great work!
That you did not open and close your explanation with Jim Hiller and the worst coaching decision of all time means you did not understand that game or why the Oilers won.
