SHOULD the Canucks sign Thatcher Demko to an extension? | Canucks Conversation

There’s risk BOTH ways with a Thatcher Demko extension in Vancouver… will the Canucks and their star netminder find a deal that makes sense, or will next season be Thatcher’s last in blue and green?

  1. High risk, high reward is a myth. In reality it’s high risk, low reward/low risk, high reward. Just saying

  2. Extend him at the same salary or less, otherwise let him walk. The Canucks always get sentimental and overpay their own draft picks.

  3. Damn straight. This is exactly why we have LTIR. They should be able to get a good deal, and they have protection with lankinen back there. If he can play 45 games at top form, its a steal. If he can't, they leave him on the Carey Price plan. Teams have been able to trade LTIR contracts if needed. Then you take the savings and develop that third string, because that guy is getting games.

  4. So you wanna know how teams combat injury concerns? THEY DRAFT! You draft someone on an entry level deal that can come up and down to fill in when you're player is out on injury, at even 60-75% of the production value for those missed games, and have others in the lineup step up, you should be good to go. This team has to start embracing the draft as a necessary tool to grow this team.

  5. Technically, this coming season is Demko's 'show me you can stay healthy' year. He needs to prove he can play without getting injured.
