Flyers Daily with Jason Myrtetus: Flyers are in Buffalo to take on the Sabres for Game 82 of the season and we preview the final matchup. Plus we stage a bit of an intervention in regards to the talking point DuJour regarding the upcoming draft and present evidence of past drafts to gain insight on draft position and its effect on teams future roster building. We also take on some emails and YouTube comments for the Flyers Fan perspective.

Get better Jason! Thinking of you.
Greetings from SoCal. Flyers fan from 1-11-76!
UK Flyers fan here and this is the second season that I've been fully tuned into. I agree with you, tanking takes all of the integrity out of the sport and results in the fans and media actually rooting against their team (whaaaat???!!) but I feel like there isn't enough jeopardy to not tank… There'll obviously be plenty of reasons against this but if there was a league below the NHL where the bottom 2 teams would drop to and the top 2 teams of the league below get promoted to the NHL then it'll be far too risky to tank for 3rd/4th. Then the two news teams are rewarded picks 1 and 2 in the draft.
It's probably been suggested before but thought I'd message.
Take care Jason, I listen to the show every morning so am thankful you post it ready for when I wake up!
As a Flyers fan, the season is done. Still gonna enjoy the playoffs, then the lottery, then the draft, and then….. the absolute dead zone.
Not looking forward to that part, but i am curious to see what Danny does.
I don't think this is the year to make the big splash, but im thinking he does something.
He definitely ain't using all them picks in the first two rounds.
True about Tage Thompson. Nicklas Lidstrom was a 3rd rounder and Pavel Datsyuk was a 6th rounder. By this logic we should trade all our 1st and 2nd round picks for 3rd and 6th rounder and we'll have a team of Hall of Famers. SMH.
I’m not ready for it to be over.
I have been a die hard Flyers fan and hockey player since 2012. Sad to the season over but excited to see what Briere will do this offseason. As much as I want to see the team improve and make the playoffs, in my opinion simply making the playoffs isnt enough. I an not in the tank boat because as we have seen and you have said, you never know where the talent will come from, my all time favorite player is Giroux and he was drafted 22nd. I still do think though, that adding players that aren’t of the top teir quality, specifically forwards, would hurt the players we have now. We have seen players like Cates, Forester, and Brink take huge steps this year, and have a lot of good young kids coming up next year. I think next season should be a season where the flyers take a look at what they have in the organization now, sort of like what they did this year but without the huge subtractions, so they still can improve. If we add a 2C that still leaves a whole at 1C and takes playing time away from kids like Jett, who i would like to see take a bigger role than bottom line minutes. I also think its time to move in from a guy like Delo because he has such little upside and can be replaced by a guy like Grebenkin who has the size but also has a positive upside. I also think Ersson deserves another year getting 40-50 starts with a more competent back 1b and hopefully a more competent defensive structure, but if there is no improvement i think its would be time to move on until Zavragin, who i think will be a definite starter, is ready. Just my opinions but i agree with a lot of what you have to say. Love the Pod, and am wishing you much luck in your recovery this offseason.
66 years old this May a Flyer fan my whole life born in Tofield Ab, raised in Edmonton live in Calgary at the moment love the playoffs love to bring the Cup home to Canada Jason, Elbows up my brothers and sisters. 😊
You are looking better as the week has gone on. Hope you feel that way. I want the Flyers to play a hard game, would like them to fall short. I never say this, being a Flyers fan since 1970. But playing 82 games, not a very good season, if you can pick several spots higher in a game that does not have anything else on the line, why not. God Bless you and your family Jason. Have a great day!
Hey Jason I believe your argument is flawed the value of the no.2 pick does not lose value because someone chose the wrong player. Anyone selected after no.2 was available at no.2 does every GM get it right. Absolutely not. But if you believe you have a good GM then wanting the higher pick is a completely logical argument to give your GM the biggest pool to pick from. Also Boston is an original 6 team has always been known as culture franchise and they tanked so blatantly it was insane.
Jason to reiterate your point I live down where the Bolts play in Tampa. 5 guys this year 25 goals or better and zero of those guys were taken in the first round of their draft year.
Regulation loss – 4th pick
Regulation win – 7th pick
Overtime win or loss – 6th pick
5th pick is impossible (obviously this is assuming the lottery goes as the standings.)
The only teams that affect us are either done playing or the Sabres.
Hey Jason, great to hear from you, I love listening. Keep fighting man 👊🏻
I'm a bit pessimistic about our off-season but am trying to have faith in Danny and Jonesy. It's do-or-die for them I think, with 7 high picks and a coaching hire, plus probably a new goalie. I'm usually very optimistic but I don't see the pieces in place for a jump next year. The prospect pool is average at best and I think bringing Jett up next year would be rushing him. We need a # 1 goalie, a 1C and 2C centers, and a 1D and likely none of that in pipeline. Plus the team, especially the defense, is small. I can't imagine once this team gets to a perennial playoff contender that they'll have each of Andrae, York, and Drysdale on the team, probably only one of them. I wonder if they try to let York get poached by an offer sheet for picks this off-season, although I'd prefer to flip him for someone like Byram.
While I completely understand that you don't want to struggle again, especially with what you're dealing with, I don't know how much of a jump we'll see. Plus, after hearing Danny and Jonesy hammering the point of "doing the rebuild right" and preaching patience, it's troubling to hear that THEY think this is rock bottom. I have my doubts. There's not a ton out there that may swing our fortunes, it may depend on the growth of what we have. Can we fix the god damn Powerplay and get a few guys to 30 goals? TK, Mich, Foerster, and Tipp maybe? That would change my mind. I know we all want playoffs but they are right about wanting to compete for Cups, not just playoffs. Repeatedly looking at Buffalo's failures as a reason not to rebuild seems like low hanging fruit. They have some great players. Detroit is there too, good players with disappointing results. Ottawa was there too, San Jose on the way. They don't have the culture. We did it in reverse with culture first and I guess we'll see how that goes for us
Plus, I'm pessimistic because it's just our freaking luck that we'd load up on picks for what was supposed to be a good draft, and now it's seen as subpar, while it now looks like there will be borderline generational talents coming the next 3 drafts.
Sorry for the novel, I've had a lot on my mind and have been looking for a way to engage.
Lets go Buffalo. Secure that top 6 pick for the Flyers please.
You can cherry pick draft stuff all you want with what other teams have done to fit your narrative of it doesn't matter where you finish via draft position.
The fact is the Flyers have been dog shit in drafting and developing compared to most of the league.
I dont trust their scouting staff at all.
Get rid of the lottery and adopt whats called the gold plan.
Look it up.
No matter what pick the Flyers end up getting, they need to take the best player available. There has been countless times when this organization had an elite level prospect fall into their laps and they passed on them for some reason. I'm not talking about taking Patrick over Makar when nobody knew Makar was going to be this generation's Bobby Orr. Or taking Provorov over Rantanen when Provorov was thought to be a sure fire franchise defenseman. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a guy who broke Ovechkin's U18 record falling to you at 14th when he was supposed to go in the top 5 (Cole Caufield) and passing on him for Cam York. Or when the most talented defenseman in the draft who was projected to go in the top 5 (Zeev Buium) magically falls to you at 12 and you pass on him to take a guy who was ranked in the 20s (Luchanko) by every respectable scout and outlet on the planet. Or a projected 30 goal scorer from Russia who is projected to go in the 10-15 range, who plays LW and would have been the perfect linemate for Michkov for the next decade falls to you at 32 (Chernyshov), you don't punt that pick to Edmonton for a first round pick this year. Chernyshov led the OHL in points per game ahead of guys like Michael Misa. He went 33rd to San Jose. If we just would have simply taken the opportunities that were handed to us on a silver platter instead of overthinking it or trying and outsmart everyone, we would have had Buium as a 1D in our system and a 6-3 goal scoring LW to play opposite of Michkov. But instead we ended up with Luchanko and a pick from Edmonton. And Caufield was close to 40 goals this year while York still really hasn't found his place in the NHL. The Flyers have to start taking these prospects that fall to them when they're OBVIOUSLY the best player on the board. The hockey Gods aren't gonna keep sending us gifts if we keep rejecting them.
No matter what happens tonight, I know I will be missing hockey real bad in a couple months… with that knowledge, I'm happy to enjoy one more game – whatever happens, happens.
Thanks for all the episodes and your perseverance. Even in the situations where I am maybe not super excited about the Flyers (this season has had some tough stretches, admittedly) I still look forward to the recaps and insights in these episodes. I like that you actually have a mind for competition (plus the bigger picture) and aren't just throwing out "TEAM TANK" pamphlets left and right. Sometimes I wonder if the people in that wagon actually enjoy hockey or are just conditioned to be miserable by now – but these videos are a bright spot. Keep fighting that good fight, my dude. We are with you.
Jason,
You inspire me my brother! Keep fighting. Drop the gloves against cancer. Quick Flyers question…I can't see the Flyers using all 8 picks in the first three rounds in the upcoming draft. Do you see the Flyers trading some of these assets for young emerging players?
I watch and follow hockey for entertainment. I expect these players play to win, period!
Hi Jason, hope you’re feeling better. I don’t like a lot of the crap Bettman has brought to the NHL. Foremost is the draft lottery. I believe the worst team should have the 1st pick. Why is tanking not a concern in the NFL, but hockey teams can’t be trusted?
