So unfortunate this play happened at all. Puljujarvi was having such a good stretch up with the club. Hoping no concussion for Chaffee. I see player safety handing Jesse a suspension. Good analysis by @toughcall.
Why there is no other angle available? Pulju keeps his direction and does not turn or push or jump or anything. He is just too damn tall for the situation. Chaffee moves towards Pulju and changes his body position just before the hit. Yes it was a bad play, but not intentional hit to "kill". Thus it seems the One game suspension was right call as the minimum on hit on head.
What us viewers need to realize is the game and the players move extremely fast, these are millisecond decisions that define your position on the ice. I think Pulju has found a lot of positive reinforcement from his new physical playstyle which is why he's thinking hit first in every situation now (35 hits in 5 games). Not defending the hit, potentially life threatening and definitely deserves suspension, but i am saying situations change in the blink of an eye and i think he just commits to the hit too late here because he is still adjusting to his new role as a physical player. I think he's approaching with his eye on the puck but then decides too late to go for the body instead
All I'm seeing is Chaffee failing to receive a bad pass and then turning into Puljujarvi's shoulder head first all by himself. There's no way for Puljujarvi to predict where the puck will go off Chaffee's stick here. He's doing the defensively responsible thing by assuming that Chaffee receives the pass successfully and would likely pivot his body to the right instead of left when he gets it on his stick.
It's easy for some beer leaguer to analyze stillshots and slow-mo replays, but what happened to the age old cliches "keep your head up" and "play the body not the puck" if this is your conclusion?
Anyone claiming "I would have done like this instead…" probably hasn't played a game since the age of 9. Loads of couch experts having strong opinions…😂
Puljujärvi didn't even try to tackle Chaffee, he blocked Chaffee's skating line. When you collide with a bison, you are weaker in the collision. It was not aimed at the head in any way, Puljujärvi is a big player and Chaffee has his head down. The NHL game speed is fast and collisions happens.
