  1. Time flies. The amount of top end players that are nearing 10yrs+ or 1000 pts already is insane. Having my birthday yesterday is really showing how fast time is flying

  2. Sorry Shannon, Nate made his playoff debut in his rookie year, 10 points in 7 games as an 18 year old 🙂 . Really cool to see his point totals shot up each time he signed a contract extension. That doesn't always happen. Cool video, thanks!

  3. He’s the best player in the game. Everyone league-wide knows it. McDavid SOLELY hit his prime earlier than MacKinnon did, that’s it. But ONCE MacKinnon hit his peak, he passed McDavid up and left him in the rearview. MacKinnon ALSO does not have Draisaitl and another 50 goal scorer aside from him to inflate his numbers the way McDavid does. He IS their 50 goal scorer, he’s their main goal scorer and their main facilitator altogether; and he’s 2nd only to Barkov as the best 2-way forward in the league. He’s the best player on earth and the defending MVP on the way to repeating it for a reason. Don’t let certain McMedia fanboys try to claim McDavid is somehow “leagues” better than everyone else when he isn’t even the best player on his own team anymore. That’s Draisaitl…. MacKinnon is without debate the best player on earth today.

  4. Idk man, I normally agree with a lot of your content but I think you’re really underselling what Nate has been throughout his career. There was a year where it was a “hey what happened there?” But the Avs were complete ass then. He’s been a Demi god ever since and if you actually watched him day in & out, you’d be able to see that. He’s been a top 3 player in the league for the last 4-5 years

  5. Nathan MacKinnon is the UNDISPUTED #1 BEST professional athlete in the WORLD right now. Nobody in any sport in any league is on his level right now.

  6. The Altitude broadcast last night actually brought up an interesting stat. For MacKinnon to get that first 500 points, it took him something like 520 games played, for him to hit the next 500 points, it took him like 320 games played. I just thought that was a neat stat

  7. Thank you for the video. Nate may well end up as the greatest player in Avalanche history, even eclipsing Sakic and Forseberg. I just wish you had worn a better jersey and hat for this one: more burgundy, less blue.

  8. Correction: MacKinnon's rookie year was his first playoff year. Had 10 points in the 2014 playoffs–2 G, 8 A. Had three assists in Game 1 vs MIN (the third helper coming on Stastny's OT winner), and one of Mack's two goals in that series was the OT winner in Game Five

  9. I just remember when Mackinnon was drafted how everyone was saying we need a defenseman badly and take Seth Jones. Patrick Roy was our coach and was practically braking the table for Nathan Mackinnon. Since he face him as a coach. Good thing Joe Sakic listened to Patrick on that one. Seth Jones had a good career but nothing compared to Mackinnon. I could see Roy literally breaking a table for Mackinnon, if he pushed the plexiglass onto a visiting coach in his first game, that table is gone.

  10. A great review for a great player!!

Quick question on Gabriel Landeskog, a great Captain and two-way player who more than likely will retire due to his injury.
Do you think he has the numbers to make the HOF?

  11. I think his slow start to his career was due to playing for a garbage team. Avs were really bad then. Prime Mario with a team full of scrubs and a jackass coach wouldn't put up points.

  12. If he stays healthy, I can see him getting 1700+ pts, covid years hurt everyone statistically, and some even had (well, we thought so, it looks like he might be back, they're exceptionally healthy and in shape guys ever since things got real professional by the early to mid 90's) health repercussions stopping their careers for a while due to the long term syndrome some apparently get from it like Jonathan Toews. Some less known players suddenly had drops in production in sync with the pandemic and were never really the same again or retired early (Wayne SImmons comes to mind, goes from being a 30 goal scorer to a healthy scratch half the time (or more) he spent with Toronto when they got him for a second/third line role. But that said, I wish there is never again a) a pandemic of such a tremendous effect, varying in its strength and symptoms seemingly wildly differently from persons to persons b) shortened seasons due to contract disputes between NHLPA/NHL, last I counted, it was a lockout each time, not a player's strike like what ruined the 1994 season 2/3 into it where finally the Montreal Expos were amongst the 3 favourites to win the pennant, Blue Jays already had 2 in a row, so MLB management didn't mind too much, Canadian teams stealing the American pastime, not on the MLB's watch 🤣(you think Bettman is awful and hates Canada? Bud Selig is several levels higher and thankfully is gone now, which for people who care, heightens the chance for that franchise to resurrect), but I'm getting lost in another sport, which I've never returned to watching after that season was done with.

Nate-dog started his career in the only low point of the franchise (since it's been in Colorado), it was a bit ugly after Sakic retired for a while over there as the 2010's were starting, they were out of the picture, even if they made the playoffs when Roy became coach, they did by the skin of their teeth and the strong work ethic Roy was able to bring out of his extremely young lineup, but even with Mac in, it took until 2018 for the Avs to start looking like a respectable team, now that they are after winning a cup after a 20 year drought, they're having issues with highly important players getting injured often (not sure Manson played a full season since I started to care for the NHL again, as my #1 team was out of the picture after the Kreider-Price Incident, thankfully I came back when MTL was suddenly in conference finals vs Vegas, I know I seem like a sore loser, but after sticking for the Nords to rebuild as a kid with a mom who was a wild Nords fan, only to see them get respectable and make playoffs for the first time when I was conscious of reality back in the 92-93 season, and the continued improvements leading to the crazy good team they had in 94-95 only for them to disappear to Colorado, just after the MLB player strike ending the Expos at least making the playoffs for sure since the early 80's, and then making Pittsburgh my team but no way for me to enjoy them except on CHEL, even if I had been an early turncoat for the Habs, their worst period ever was soon after the Nords departed, when Roy got traded to Colorado just 20 games in the next season, it was the Réjean "Pinotte" Houle GM era and there is no worse GM in the story of GM's who ever GM'd the Habs, trading away all star players for washed out ex-Habs like when they got back Shayne Corson and then Stephane Richer, man the late 90's was awful to be into hockey in eastern Canada.

This blog post courtesy of lack of sleep, untreated ADD:PI and other quirks I only feel late at night.

  13. It didn’t “just click” for him. He struggled for his first four seasons, then hired and committed to working with a sports psychologist. If he hadn’t done that he may have never been able to achieve what he has.

  14. MacKinnon didn't just click. He went and hired a sports psychologist. He hired a personal chef. He hired a dietician. He started seeking people like Crosby out to learn from.

What is astonishing isn't that MacKinnon got great. It's how MacKinnon has worked his way to greatness through effort and commitment. That's why I think that MacKinnon is the best player in the league. Because he found a way to do it through the hard work, and not just on talent.

  15. Mackinnon on the Spittin Chicklets podcast had mentioned he put himself into Therapy with a sports psychologist after his slump years, to help himself get into the right mindset. He also started training during the off season with Sidney Crosby in Cole Harbour. I have no doubt that Sidney was a positive influence on Nate as well.

  16. I could see him doing 1500, maybe even 1750. But he seems like someone that’s going to fall off once age catches up with him. Ovi, for instance, wasn’t an end to end, balls to the walls rush player even in his heyday, working a team-driven one-tee system. Nate’s legs are going to give out eventually, and with it, his speed, rushing skills, and then points. But it’s still a long ways off, he’s just now hitting his prime.

  17. Hes going to remain overshadowed.
Its a shame but there just isnt one guy who is head and heels above the rest. And there shouldnt be.
The slow start..the lack of those BIG 130+ point seasons.
    Is what it is.

  18. 100 points..Like, Ok, but guys are putting up way more than that now. He needs to take that next jump (that Crosby never did) and tally like 140+, like McD, Kuch, Drai have..

  19. Something interesting to note and why I think Mack wins his second back to back Hart. Mackinnon's PPG before Mikko was traded was 1.53 (75 in 49) and since then its been 1.58 (27 in 17). His goal scoring in particular has risen as a result of the previous top goal, Mikko, leaving. It depends on how close he and Draisaitl are point wise by the end of the season (I assume a difference of 10 at most), with how many goals Draisaitl scores will likely be the deciding factor.

  20. I was going to school in Halifax the year MacKinnon led the Mooseheads to the Memorial Cup. He and that team were electric. I would sit ice level for next to nothing and got to watch a future HOFer and Nova Scotia boy tear it up every night. Plus the NHL was locked out for months that year so there was no other hockey for to focus on. It was some of the most fun I’ve ever had watching the game. Metro Centre was rocking.

Hope he wins a gold medal next year. He’s the type of player that gets you out of your seat on a near nightly basis

  21. 2:44 – it didn't "just click".

MacKinnon has spoken of this time. He thought he'd just be an average player, after the first few years. But, he changed himself. He hired a personal trainer and a nutritionist. They rebuilt him and his attitude. He built up muscle and learned to use his new build on the ice. When it started to get better for him, then he started to demand more from his team mates – I remember an interview with zadorov, where he (jokingly) complains of Nate controlling zad's diet. Off-season, drink/eat what you like. In season, take things seriously if you want to win.

MacKinnon would be an awful captain, but he is a great inspiration for others around him.

  22. Whatever system Bednar employs to get the most out of players like MacKinnon…his first year was rough as the team hit bottom following Roy’s time, but since then holy cow.

  23. Playoff Debut 2017/2018 ? Come on Shannon. I was at the game with my nipple on the glass in 2014 for a playoff game, before that other guy went viral for nipple on glass. Minesota Vs Colorado 2014. Game 1, 6 on 5 Mackinnon with a game tying assist with 13 seconds left and Gw Assist in ot to Stasny. Come on Shannon

  24. He reminds me of a mini speedy lemuix. Just unstoppable with the puck… more like a horse…I'd take him over Conner McDangles anyday…but I still go with my man Crosby… his all around game is better IMO…but yes it's like hairline descions but in a game of inches it matters…

    Crosby
    Wayne
    Nate
    Lemuix
    McDavid

  25. 0:30 Barkov wasn’t even looked at in the top 3 of that draft class it was crazy. It’s clear Mackinnon and Barkov are the top 2 in that draft in that order
