These are low risk signings. You need players to fill your minor league clubs and this gives undrafted players a shot at a pro career. A couple more years with the ECHL or AHL teams to continue to develop his game can certainly help. No, he's unlikely going to challenge Makar for the Norris in a few years, but you need depth players on D so having a potential options in the system is critical. If he turns out to be a serviceable player and Leafs can't find a spot for him, he can be an asset you use in a trade to acquire a player you need (like a center or winger, for example).
Matthew Knies is a Treiliving-type player that he inherited when he got the GM job. Kudos to Dubas for drafting him. Finally a homegrown player that wasn't taken in the 1st round. He could be a superstar.
Steve has always understood this: No matter how the Leafs are now, their promising, young players are the team’s best way forward.
